Re: Cannot find original folder for Mail downloads
It was just a one click quick route to the mail downloads that Daniel installed for me. I just tried opt+ the GO and found the Mail alias and another folder called Mail but nothing in that relating to downloads. However, the Opt with Go is the only way I can get there. Hi Bill, Why do you have an alias of the Mail Downloads folder on your Desktop? I wanted to find the original folder for Mail Downloads ( I have an alias on my Desktop) I tried searching = nothing found. Re: iOS9 downloads
Hi Severin & Peter, At first approximation they are the same, but the mechanism of the update is different since one can be a delta and self-applied update and the other installs a complete build rather than patching the OS. The OTA (Over The Air) update implies the OS and device is working properly, so iTunes is a good bet if you really want to ensure the update goes well or want to put the device into Recovery mode to ensure the new OS and only the new OS is written. Strange file in downloads folder ?
Hi folks, I discovered this morning a file in my downloads folder that I do not recall downloading. From memory (sorry I eventually deleted it without writing it down), it was “mac-card-restore-trial.dmg” I had a difficult time deleting it, but eventually once I dragged to desktop and re-started my iMac it deleted. Really strange though, because initially right clicking it would not even bring up a menu to delete. I have iMac Core i7 3.1GHz with 16GB RAM. December 2012 model. Has anyone come across this file before please ? Bill Can't argue with that! :-) My business requires me to stay close to the front edge of this stuff so I tend to update as soon as I can, but I must admit it also means that I stay at the front edge of the problems. Fortunately I have been fairly lucky in having been able to avoid most of them. Nevertheless, technology is changing at an extremely rapid rate these days, and Apple is often leading the charge. I'm sorry you've had these issues with some aspects of Mavericks, but all I can say is that they are outside my experience. My main niggles with Mavericks have been related to certain small bits of software which were not sufficiently developed to deal with Retina displays, such as the Colour Picker. Most if not all of these have been addressed in Yosemite, so I for one am a happy chappie. Yosemite for me has been a further step forward. Sorry not an answer for Rosemary, but allied problem. I use both Safari and Chrome (also sometimes Firefox), but since about 2 weeks ago, Safari has the heading This version of Safari is no longer supported. Please upgrade to a supported browser.. I'm still on 10.6.8, which is probably why the message appears. Do I just carry on using the unsupported Safari until it collapses, or is there any way of updating it while still on 10.6.8? Re: Yosemite with chrome downloads
Hello David, I too had a problem this week with bank transfers to a nominated account (RABO/Macquarie Bank) which I have been doing for many years. I am using Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and Safari 5.1.10. The transfers would not go through using Safari. I only use Safari - but tried using Firefox and the transfers went through easily. So, as I prefer using Safari, I will be spending this weekend carefully going through the WAMUG posts to be dragged kicking and screaming to upgrade from my comfortable SL to Mavericks. Yosemite is a step too far! Hope it all goes well for me. Regards Marlene Oostryck On 24/10/2014, at 2:28 PM, David Noel wrote: Sorry not an answer for Rosemary, but allied problem. Itunes downloads
Hello. How do I permanently stop or council unwanted downloads from iTunes? Due to a slow internet I have started two downloads of the same TV program.( Seems nothing is happening so I click download again and then the downloads start. I stop one and let the other finish) One I want but the other I do not. I can delete the down load list but next time I use Itunes it tries to download again. After a chat with Iinet internet speed has improved. The above has happened about ten times over the last two months. So now I have about ten different TV programs waiting to down load. The only way is to let them download but that uses my data limit up. Hi Alan, Once an item enters the download queue, the user cannot remove it. Either allow them to download, then delete them (easiest) OR Contact the iTunes Store customer support department through the Contact page and ask them if they'll remove the item(s) from your queue for you. http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ Cheers, Ronni Sent from Ronni's iPad4 On 19 Mar 2014, at 6:52 pm, Alan Fenton alc...@bigpond.com wrote: Hello. Hi Alan, Did you mean to say to click and drag downloads from the sidebar, rather than the house? NO, don't drag the Downloads from the Sidebar otherwise you will loose it. Re: Question Mark Dock Icon for Downloads
Hi Ronni Thanks, now done. I was concerned that dragging the sidebar entry would move it, and therefore lose it in Finder. I was reassured that in Preferences it was ticked to display - and it did immediately recreate itself after I had clicked and dragged it. Now (following instructions to the letter) I re-did the Dock item by dragging the actual folder. Some more puffs of smoke for the virtual environment. Hi, a quick question about app downloads. If I download an app (paid) to my iPhone, can I download the same app to my wife's iPad (same Apple ID) without paying again? Re: iTunes downloads
I should add, my iPhone is synchronized to my (Win7) laptop and my wife's iPad is synchronized to her MacBook. I am having trouble with Home Share between the Win7 machine and others in the network as a side issue necessitating my original question. I would just drag it over if home share weren't the issue it currently is for me. Pete. Re: Mail Downloads folder (for email attachments)
Hi All, Mail in Mountain Lion also saves attachments in another location as well, which is much harder to find and go through to delete attachments, especially if you have quite a few email accounts as I do :-) When you receive a message with attachments, Mail stores the raw source of the attachments inside the .emlx message file, and keeps a separate copy of the attachment alongside the message file in an Attachments folder (both are buried 'very' deep within ~/Library/ Mail/V2/). ~/Library/Mail/V2/ select 'one' of your Account Folders (if you have more than one account)/then... for an example I'll use my AosIMAP-ronni account path: ~/Library/Mail/V2/AosIMAP-ronni/INBOX.mbox/5457B4B6-xxx---etc/Data/then you find folders 0 to 9/ and inside each of those 9 folders are other folders/ click one folder/ Attachments/then another folder/then 2, 2.1 or 2.2?/ and there is an attachment (which I can 'control-click'-move to trash). Start again on another folder... OMG drat this for a joke... Heck leave the attachments there, I don't have time to go through all these folders to find any attachments to delete. If you remove attachments from a selected message (by choosing Message Remove Attachments), Mail modifies the .emlx file on disk that contains the message and also deletes the separate attachment file. With Daniel's hint below with attachments in the Mail Downloads folder, you can choose when Mail deletes attachment copies in the Mail Downloads folder with the Remove Unedited Downloads pop-up menu on the Mail Preferences General pane. Choose 'Never' to retain the files indefinitely, or 'After Message is Deleted' or 'When Mail Quits' to delete them when you quit Mail. Re: Mail Downloads folder (for email attachments)
Hi Peter Correct. Basically if you get an attachment and double click it to view it then it will save to that folder and open in its associated program (eg .doc to Word, .pdf to Preview) etc. then if you save it from the email to the desktop or another folder you will have two copies (one where you put it and one in the library folder. If you then go back to the same email and double click the icon again it will open again and save another copy to the library folder. That's why sometimes you'll see the file 2,3 or more times. Eg filename.pdf then filename-1.pdf and so on. I once soon in a clients machine about 15 of the same 6mb file as they weren't aware it worked that way every time they re-clicked the file. After a bit of training ( and some cleaning up) all was good. I normally leave them a link/alias somewhere back to that folder do it's easy access to get to it to clean up. It doesn't take much for it to build to a few GB's of space. (sure hard drives have lots of space - but it all counts. And it's easier to clean up 100 files then 1200+ files as it builds up. Lol So in answer to your question yes it will still stay in your email or your folder system where ever you file it to and the ones there can be deleted if you don't need them. (sorry for the ramble lol. ) Hope that helps. Hi Ronni and Daniel I have a current need to be going through and extracting data from old, paper, share and dividend records, some as old as 40 years. I have some quite extensive and useful printouts of Excel spreadsheets on file, dating up to 1998. I had assumed that the originals would have disappeared at some change of computer or would be unreadable. Purely by chance I discovered one by Spotlight which is readable but have been unable to locate others. If there are any, I am sure they would be in the same folder, in Downloads. Hence my interest in seeing a display of all my Downloads again. I clearly recall thinking that this new facility would only be useful to small users like me with a few 'screens-full' of documents, not heavy users like you with acres of 'screens-full'. Re: Downloads
Ian, I assume you downloaded the old Excel files you refer to from the Internet. I do so because that is how files normally end up in the 'Downloads' folder. If not, then the files are very likely in your 'Documents' folder. However, if you import files by means other that the Internet, and you don't think carefully about what you are doing, then the files could be anywhere. Are you confident that you know how you have structured all of the folders on your Mac, and that you know exactly in which folder you stored them? Too many computer users have a totally unstructured folder structure, and therefore have lots of trouble finding documents. Unfortunately, if your old Excel files were created on a Mac then they will not have a file extension. This is because before MacOS 10 the Macintosh OS did not need file extensions to work fully. If you are lucky, your old Excel files come from a Microsoft OS computer, in which case they will have file extensions that you can search for. In that case: 1 go to the Finder 2 press Command-F 3 choose to search for 'Name', then 'ends with' and enter '.xls' in the text box. 4 keep fingers crossed while all your Excel files appear in the search results 5 if in luck press the '+ and add a second search rule where 'Created date' is 'before' a certain date. 6 improve your filing sytem and move all the relevant files into a relevant, well-named folder. 7 if the above does not work because the files don't have an extension then at least search for old files and try to use Excel to open each one. This is a good basic test of your account and server information. As your ISP is iiNet, use mail.iinet.net.au as your outgoing mail SMTP server, but pop.gmail.com as your incoming mail server. Also find out if you can reach your incoming mail server from your computer. Open Network Utility, located in Applications/Utilities, and click Ping. Ping is a simple network testing tool that shows whether a server computer is running and can be reached from your computer. Type the mail server name (such as pop.gmail.com) or IP address in the address field, and click Ping. If you see 10 repeating lines, then the server can be reached. Hi Blitto, Upgrading the Firmware does not change that you are still connecting at b/g speeds. A Airport Extreme N / Airport Time Capsule N or Airport Express N will connect at b/g n speeds/ Wireless G uses the IEEE802.11g wireless ethernet standard and has a max speed of 54mbps. Re: Slow Downloads?
Hi Rod If you're wanting faster on wireless, then the N routers do make a difference. The Netgear DG-2000 is N compatible and quite well priced. Otherwise, and if you don't have a current backup system at home, the a 1TB Time Capsule can do some similar. You let the Netgear handle all the internet connection and the Time Capsule does all the wireless and Time Machine backup (Wirelessly). (Set the Time Capsule to Bridge mode). You can then have the Time Capsule doing dual band wireless (N and b/g) and have the benefit of wireless Time Machine backup to the Time Capsule. That's similar to the setup I have here. Hope that helps a little. Re: Slow Downloads?
Hi Blitto, What Daniel has mentioned is what I said in my previous reply to you. It is how I have my Network setup with my Netgear DG834Gv4 connected to a 1TB Time Capsule. The 1TB TC is configured as a 'Simultaneous Dual-Band 802.11n Wi-FI Base Station. My Macs, iPad, iPhone all connect to the Dual-Band Network the slower b/g devices don't slow down the N capable devices connection speed. The Netgear handles the connection to the Internet the TC handles everything else, the Wireless Network / Time Machine Backups. I'm just wishing and hoping that Apple will release a 2TB Time Capsule with an Inbuilt Modem so it will do everything! We won't have to have a separate Modem. This is what I have been wanting Apple to do for years! Re: Slow Downloads?
Although I'd like to see this too, I can't see it happen. The reason I can't see it happening is that as internet changes then the modem becomes Redundant or out-dated. Also, if someone is on cable, which is generally different, then the modem is of no use to them. So it limits their scope to sell too. Take modems that were only capable of ADSL. When ADSL2/2+ came out,..the modem was no good. So you bought a new modem to handle ADSL1- ADSL2/2+. By adding the modem to the Time Capsule, then if something changes again, you have to buy a new Time Capsule. Whereas now, you just buy the modem and run the Time Capsule to it. Doesn't matter if you're on ADSL, ADSL2/2+, Cable, Wireless, ISDN,..etc. :o) That's my thinking on it anyway :o) Kind Regards Daniel On 26/2/11 9:44 PM, Ronda Brown ro...@mac.com wrote: I'm just wishing and hoping that Apple will release a 2TB Time Capsule with an Inbuilt Modem so it will do everything! Re: Slow Downloads?
Yes Daniel, you and I would like to see this happen, but it won’t happen! Apple AirPort base stations (including the Time Capsule) don't include modem functionality. I imagine it's because Apple doesn't want to sell two versions of each base station, one for DSL and the other for cable. I believe different DSL providers use differing technology. Integrating an ADSL bridge into an Airport device would limit the number of providers who would be able to utilise the integration. It would be nice though! Hate to throw my nerdy hat in the ringbut... I come across network throughput discussions a lot in my work with businesses and schools. Networks aren't simple. There are a few factors impacting speed. Always consider the ³end to end² path of the traffic. Apologies if you've read this before. There are stacks of formulas that calculate actual network speeds but let's put the technical stuff to one side and keep it basic. Best ADSL2+ speed - 24Mbps (if you're close to the exchange) Cable - 30Mbps (ditto) NextG - 8Mbps (some anecdotal stories of 10-11Mbps downloads reached) Wireless-G: 54Mbps (Theoretical - depends on proximity) Wireless-NL 150Mbps (Theoretical) Ethernet - 10Mbps/100Mbps/1000Mbps (Depends on switch/device) I won't go into Fibre! The point is, if you are downloading a file from the Internet, your bottleneck is your Internet connection method. Unless you have a really poor performing Wireless modem/router, even that is faster than your best ADSL2+ connection. Unless you're lucky enough to have 100Mbps (NBN anyone?) ;-) Sometimes, just sometimes, you may get a slight improvement in file transfer time by connecting to Ethernet rather than Wireless-G, but that can be due to interference of cordless devices on the 2.4GHz spectrum. Note: if you are transferring files between computers on your own network then your method of connection can have an impact. Cheers, Stuart Remember that all 'network' traffic has overheads (packet/frame headers, acknowledgements, protocol checks etc) so even if you have a 100Mbps link you won't transfer a 100Mb file in one second. (Note it is a little b and that means bits not bytes!). In between you and the other site you're linked to is a number of exchanges and equipment and other people sharing links that can impact on your communication speeds. On 26/02/11 10:22 PM, Ronda Brown ro...@mac.com wrote: Yes Daniel, you and I would like to see this happen, but it won¹t happen! Cheers, Ronni On 26/02/2011, at 9:53 PM, Daniel Kerr wrote: Although I'd like to see this too, I can't see it happen. Hi Rod, today I downloaded from iTunes 2.7Gb of applications from the Apple store using iiNet. It warned initially that the downloads would take over an hour and ended out taking 1 hr and 8 minutes. I find that when I am in the other room immediately near the router it is a lot faster but I was too lazy to move.. I'm using iiNets naked ADSL 2+ with Belkin wireless router over the wireless. My sympathies and I wish you luck. Bigpond must be the most incompetent Provider in OZ if not the world. I foolishly signed up for a new deal which was going to give me unbelievable speeds for a relatively modest outlay. I noted that I could back out of the deal within 7 days and did so. To welcome me to Bigpond they credited me with a welcome credit which months later I am still being credited with despite on 3 or 4 occasions telling them I am not with them, I feel like spending it now:-) On 14/04/2010, at 4:41 PM, Adrian Skehan wrote: Mac Afternoon all, Can anyone give a clue to the cause of monster downloads, On one day last month there was a 5Gb download and again a few days ago there was a 7Gb download, my normal daily download ranges from 100 Mb to 200Mb with the very occasional 600Mb to 900Mb. No one else has the password and the only people in the house are myself, wife and 45 year old daughter who is temporarily with us, no one here would have any interest in something that big. I presume that 5 or 7Gb would take some time to download and would be unlikely to go unnoticed. I have ClamXav installed as a precaution against viruses. The only other thing is Synchronising computers (Calendar, Contacts Keychain and Mail) with MobileMe and iDisk Sync (I am not using iPhoto on the new iMac and there is nothing in my Gallery that is synced with it either), can either of these be responsible for such downloads? Believe it or not I have been with them for 12 months now and apart from an issue with drop-outs when they upgraded me to ASDL 2 for no charge a few months ago and now this, which is yet to be proven that they are at fault, the service has lived up to all expectations. Hi Adrian, syncing with the iDisk could be the problem. I had to stop doing that myself as it was using massive amounts of my quota with uploads and downloads syncing. The only other thing is Synchronising computers (Calendar, Contacts Keychain and Mail) with MobileMe and iDisk Sync (I am not using iPhoto on the new iMac and there is nothing in my Gallery that is synced with it either), can either of these be responsible for such downloads? Re: Downloads
I can appreciate concern over monster downloads as I blundered into a download fiasco just last week. Without thinking of my circumstances I purchased a game (Dragon Age: Deluxe). When I started downloading it I was shocked to see it was about 9.6 GB. My shock hadn't worn off when I realised that I had already used more than half of my monthly 6 GB allowance before starting the download. Well, it wasn't long before I reached my allowance limits and downloading slowed to a painful crawl, mostly around 10 kbps. It took about three days, around-the-clock, to complete the download, and when completed I had almost completely gone through my next month's allowance. When I originally signed up for 6 GB monthly allowance I though that should pretty well handle my needs. Hah! Re: Downloads
Hi Alex, check the iiNet.net.au site for broadband plans. They are pretty representative of the better options that are available from the better providers. Even if you have a 40gig limit (40 peak and 40 off peak) syncing the iDisk (which in my case was 20gig) can chew through the quota. We don't use very much now as iTunes and our favorite tv shows are in iinet's Freezone. A 25gig plan would probably be ample. Hi Alex, When I came to Australia, from the UK, I was amazed that you had to still pay a monthly subscription for dial-up - I was used to Freeserve and was quite put out at having to pay $15 per month on top of my call charges. This was in 2004 and I felt I had gone back in time to 1994! I first started to use broadband in around 2006, with Telstra. I was with them for a while but Telstra are perhaps the worst broadband provider in my opinion. I'm now with iinet and am very happy with them. I have 45Gb peak and 75Gb off peak for around $100. I do a lot of downloading but rarely reach my limits. Their support has been pretty good too. For the equivalent of £25 you will probably get a higher download cap than you were getting in the UK. I would very much recommend iinet. Hope that helps. Kev Kevin Warner www.kcwarner.com __ Press CTRL-ALT-DEL now for an IQ test. For the equivalent of £25 you will probably get a higher download ca p than you were getting in the UK. I would very much recommend iinet. Hope that helps. Kev Kevin Warner www.kcwarner.com __ Press CTRL-ALT-DEL now for an IQ test. Thanks ever so much for everyone's (Glenn, Ronnie, Philippe, Rob, Stephen Robin) help here regarding our AAPT problem. It really is great to know that you can depend on this unique resource. Of course, turning it OFF when you are not going to be using it is good advice. 1. Change your Password on your ADSL Modem from the default login. 2. Change the Password on your Wireless Network to something more difficult, mix numbers, letters, and punctuation of at least 20 characters. 3. Use WPA2 Wi-Fi Protection 4. Don't broadcast your SSID (Network Name) Have a Closed Network. But with some effort a snooper can learn the name. A closed Network offers protection from the casual observer, many sniffer programs that monitor wireless networks—from commercial down to open-source freeware—can easily see the name of a closed network whenever a legitimate user connects to it. If no one ever connects, it remains hidden, but that’s hardly useful. I would suggest you get this Network protected ASAP ... or Turn it OFF! Re: Exceeding downloads
Jon, use WPA2 security settings on your Airport Extreme. Use a strong password (8 characters or more, no dictionary words and use numbers/punctuation). You'll be fine then. WEP security has known vulnerabilities, so if you happen to be using it and someone wants to put the time in to downloading the tools, they can crack it.
