Re: Keychain issue?

2014-03-31 Thread Ronda Brown
Hi Brian,

Try starting iTunes in Safe Mode:
1. Hold down Command+Option and click to open iTunes (this will open in Safe
Mode)
Continue holding the Command and Option keys until you see the iTunes Safe Mode
warning:

Starting iTunes in Safe Mode allows you to be able to check things and follow
prompts that iTunes shows you. It allows iTunes to download and update iTunes
components.
Safe Mode disables any non generic plugins / add-ons etc, allowing iTunes to go
back to bare operating basics.

I'll try to get back to you tomorrow sometime.

Cheers,
Ronni

Hi Ronni,
iTunes is not giving an error message,

Grey candy bar and then 1/3 of a grey progress bar then a white page.

Where would I look for an error message?

These days you need to keep multiple copies of everything, it's true, but if
you're not running some sort of backup system on your computer then you're
putting more than just your passwords at risk. I have just had two hard drives
die on me in the space of as many months: first my computer's hard drive, now
my backup drive! Fortunately, I have not lost anything irreplaceable (well, not
much at least, because I did have some things on the backup drive which I
regret losing, such as my Videobox VM).

So you also need a backup of your backup :-/

To this end I have purchased a Newer Technology Voyager Q Hard Drive Docking
Solution from MacWizardry. This wonderful little device stays connected to my
computer, and allows me to exchange backup drives within seconds. It takes bare
SATA drives (the 500Gb drive in it at the moment set me back a massive $60 from
Austin Computers) so a little care is required, but it is the most
cost-effective backup solution I have seen so far. I intend to have two, three
or more of these drives in circulation, so that when the next disaster happens
I'm not caught high and dry.

The one thing I was able to rely on though, was the fact that through it all I
had all my passwords and product installation codes backed up on my iPhone (as
well as my laptop) courtesy of 1Password.

Hi Peter

Thank you for your detailed and excellent advice about 1Password. I will look
into it but it still does not remove that nagging doubt of having all the
important information tucked carefully away on my computer and then the hard
drive dies!!! I'm probably just paranoid because of my recent experience and
being previously unaware that such a thing can happen without any warning.

I'm old fashioned enough to think I still need a hard copy backup of vital
information, but no reason why I should not have both, particularly with the
added ease of logging in to web sites.

Laura

Please let me thoroughly endorse the use us of the excellent 1Password. It is
much, much more than a Keychain substitute (in fact, it actually works in
concert with Keychain, so it's not really a substitute - it just acts like it).
I not only let you keep all of your password in one secure place, accessible
though one standard password, it is also a repository for other valuable
information such software registration numbers, credit card details, PIN
numbers, notes, in fact just about anything that you can't afford to forget,
but don't necessarily want displayed in a public place (such as someone else
using your computer).

The most valuable aspect of 1Password, though, is that way it interacts with
your Web Browser. It places an icon in the browser's tool bar which allows you,
when presented with a login page such as your online banking page, to
automatically fill the login and password fields and then log in for you,
thereby removing even the remote possibility that some eagle-eye is watching
over your shoulder as you type. In the same way it will fill in identity fields
and credit card info on those forms you have to fill in when making online
purchases. I know, most browsers already do the name and address stuff these
days, but 1Password takes it that little bit further.

Finally, there is even a 1Password iPhone app which syncs with your Mac, and
works pretty much the same way with web sites that you visit on your iPhone or
iPad.

Don't bother trying to get your head around Keychain. Just try 1Password.
Possibly the most valuable purchase you'll ever make for your Mac (and no, I
don't have shares in the company :-) ).

Hi John and Peter

Thank you both for suggesting alternative options to Keychain. Having had the
recent experience of my MacBook hard drive suddenly "dying" I was reminded of
how easy it could be to lose vital information thought to be safely stored
electronically. I had a backup on an external drive which saved the day for me
but still very disconcerting at what might have been.

you to have and know one secure password to access it. All your passwords,

It is not free but well worth the small payment.

Hello Laura,
I have been following your thread on keychain and, although I use
keychain quite a bit, would recommend you possibly have a look at a program
called 1password - http://agilewebsolutions.com/ -. All that is needed is for
you to have and know one secure password to access it. All your passwords,
personal information like banking and credit cards, serial numbers and much
more can be securely kept in this location.
It is not free but well worth the small payment.

Re: Keychain help please

2010-06-24 Thread Neil Houghton

Hi Laura,

I've only just caught up with this thread so, firstly, good to hear you now
have mail working.

> Until I know how to use Keychain I shall keep well away from it.

I agree that it is best not to start changing things in Keychain unless you
know just what you are doing (and why). However, it sounds like you have
passwords in Keychain that you have now forgotten (you are probably not the
only one here).

This may not be a problem as long as things keep working - but sometimes
things change - for example sites re-organise and a log-in page may get a
new URL and so Keychain doesn't recognise it as the one associated with the
saved password - and so you need the password to log-in again.

On several occasions I have gone back to sites/forums etc that I wished to
access and realised I had forgotten the password. Generally this isn't a
problem if I had the passwords in Keychain - on these occasions I could open
Keychain and get it to show me the stored passwords - this is basically what
Ronni was asking you to do to retrieve your password for the email server.

Now, whilst, in this case, it turned out the original problem was not a
keychain problem, you should still have been able to get Keychain to show
you the password. If you are having problems with that, it may be best to
try and work out what the problem is before it causes you real trouble.

A simple test to try and see if it gives you the same password problem would
be to create a "Secure Note" (This is a useful feature of keychain that lets
you store any confidential info in a little note. The contents of the note
is hidden until you enter the password):

- Open Keychain Access
- Under the "File" menu select "New secure Note Item"
- In the window that opens enter a name (say, "Test") in the "Keychain Item
Name:" box and some text (say, "Test note text") in the "Note:" box.
- Click the "add" button, the window will close and you have created the
secure note.

Now in the "Keychain Access" window select "login" under "Keychains" and
select "Secure Notes" under "Category" and you should see the note you have
just created with:

Name: Test
Kind: secure note
Keychain: login

Select the item and click the "i" button in the bottom bar (or just
Double-click the item) and the window for the note will open but the note
box will be blank until you tick the "show note" box - at which point you
will be asked to enter your "login" keychain password.

Do so, and click the "allow" button and:

- If all is OK the text of the note will be revealed.
- If you get the same "Sorry, you entered an invalid password" message then
we will need to look a little deeper to see just what the situation is.

By default your login keychain is the default keychain and has the same
password as your account log-in - although you can change passwords and/or
default keychains, I wouldn't recommend this unless you know what you are
doing and have a good reason - but it may be that this has been changed
inadvertently (it seems that a Microsoft software update once changed my
default keychain to "Microsoft_Intermediate_Certificates" - which caused me
some problems until I realised what had happened).

Anyway, try creating a new secure note (as above), see what happens and
report back.

Cheers

Hi Again Laura, I thought I better say "Don't type your Password in your reply
email", I only meant for you check what password you are using in iiNet
Webmail, as it probably is the same as in your Mail Account in Apple Mail.

Hi Laura,

NO, the email account's password is NOT your Login (Administrator) Password.
It is the password you would have given iiNet when you signed up & setup your
Account with them.
What password are you using to access your iiNet webmail?

Do you have a copy of your iiNet Account settings / contract?
If not, you can retrieve your 'forgotten Password" by going here:

You require your full email address that is used by the service that you have
forgotten your password for, along with a secondary piece of information (a
valid invoice number, or the credit card number you use to make payments for
this service).

Cheers,
Ronni

Re: Keychain help please

2010-06-24 Thread Rob Findlay
The only problem with this is it sounds like the keychain has been locked so it
will ask for a password to store the password.
Depending on how many other items are in the keychain I would probably just
trash the keychain from ~/Library/Keychains then launch Safari and when it
says there is no keychain environment choose reset, enter your login password
and create a new blank keychain which will have the same password as the login
password.
Of course this gets more problematic if there are other items in the old
keychain that you don't know the password for.

Hi Ronni

Sorry but I don't know the password for my mail account. It was set up four
years ago. I could assume it's the
same as my login password but no guarantee, so not sure if I should still go
ahead with your latest suggestion.

I feel rather stupid about all this given that I'm not conscious of what I did
to cause the problem!!

Hi Laura

You can also try some of the "generic" ones used for the admin password in
Keychain. These are apple or password or (nothing. Just leave it blank and
click ok).
Try those and cross fingers :)

2010-06-23 Thread Ronda Brown
Hi Laura,

The User ID=501 is you The Owner. Ownership in Mac OS X, and all flavours of
Unix, is based on an account’s user identification number (UID) and
a group’s group identification number (GID), not on the user name and group
name you see in the Info window or other folder listings.
Those names are for our convenience; the computer cares only about the numeric
identifiers.

Don't change "Access Control"!

Laura, you need to know the password for your Mail Account … do you know it?
It is the password you have entered when you setup your email account.
Mail > Preferences > Accounts - iiNet POP - Account Information - Incoming
Mail Server: mail.iinet.com.au Password: ……..

If you know your mail account password (as my following instructions are going
to delete it from your Keychain login)
1. Quit Mail

2. Choose Keychain Access > Keychain First Aid.

3.Click the Repair radio button, enter your administrator password, and click
Start.

Then open Mail, if Mail still asks for the Mail account password.

1. Return to Keychain Access, select your Login Keychain

2. Locate your mail server in the list (mail.iinet.com.au), select it, and
click Delete.

The next time you check your email, you’ll be prompted for your password; enter
it, select Remember This Password in My Keychain, and click OK.

Cheers,
Ronni

Hi Ronni

Yes that is correct, I used my normal login password for the verification but
if I use it when asked for
"login"keychain password I get the message that the password is invalid.

In "Access Control" I tried deselecting "confirm before allowing access" and
instead chose "allow all applications
to access this item" so that access to Mail is not restricted. If I then select
"save changes" I am again asked for
the password, and again when I enter my normal login password I am told it is
invalid.

I don't know what the (user ID=501) means, it's not something I recognise.

This is the result of the verification.

Hi Laura,

You say below that you did 'Verify' your login keychain … You had to type in

If you never set a different password for your Keychain 'login', the password

Hi Laura,

Without knowing exactly what you did in your Login Keychain, it is very
difficult to advise you.
A couple of things to try:

A)
1. Open Keychain Access:

2. Click 'Login' (under Keychains in the left column)

3. Then in the right column, scroll down to you find an entry for your Mail
account.
It will be something like 'mail.iinet.com.au'

4. double click on the icon beside it

5. select 'show password'

6. Type in your admin password
Keychain will then show you your Mail Account password.

B). See if you can verify your Keychain.

Open Keychain Access, located in the Utilities folder in the Applications
folder.

1.. Open Keychain Access

2.. Choose Keychain Access > Keychain First Aid.

3. Enter your user name and password.

4. Select Verify and click Start. Any problems found will be displayed.

If there are problems, select Repair, and then click Start.

The reason this is happening can be one of a number of causes.
Just resetting Safari in each of their accounts might help.
1. Open safari
2. Under Safari > Reset Safari
Tick everything
3. Click Reset
Log out and then log back in and test safari.

Other causes:
1. Their passwords may have been changed & are now not the same as
their default Keychain.

or
2. Their Keychain might be set to lock automatically after a period of
inactivity or when the computer enters sleep mode.
When your keychain is locked, trusted applications cannot access
it and you are prompted for the keychain password.

You will need to login to each of their accounts to check:

I would probably suggest that you first try checking their Keychains
for any problems:

Login to each of their accounts:

To check keychains for problems:
1. Open Keychain Access, located in the Utilities folder in the
Applications folder.

2. Choose Keychain Access > Keychain First Aid.

3. Enter the user name and password.

4.Select Verify and click Start. Any problems found will be displayed.

If there are problems, select Repair, and then click Start.

Log out and then log back into their account and Open Safari and see
if the problems is corrected.

If not try the below suggestions.

If it is No.! Passwords have been changed:
To change your keychain password:

1. Open Keychain Access, located in the Utilities folder in the
Applications folder.

2. Choose Edit > “Change Password for Keychain ( keychain name).”

3. If the keychain is locked, type the password to unlock it and click
OK.

4. Type the current password for this keychain.

5. Type a new password, and then type it again to verify.

6.Click OK.

If it is No.2 Keychain Locking:
Assuming that their default keychain’s password matches their
account’s password, you can prevent their default keychain from
locking after they log in or when your Mac enters sleep mode as follows:

In each of their Accounts:
1. Open Keychain Access, located in the Macintosh HD > Applications >
Utilities folder.

2. Select your default keychain in the Keychains list. By default,
this is the keychain login.

3. Select Edit > Change Settings for Keychain keychain_name…, where
keychain_name is the keychain selected in step 2.

4. If the checkbox next to Lock after __ minutes of inactivity is
selected, deselect it.

5. If the checkbox next to Lock when sleeping is selected, deselect it

6. Click Save.
NB: I don't like suggesting preventing Keychain from locking, as
while making these changes averts the inconvenience of regularly being
prompted for your password, it reduces the overall security of their
account if they leave your Mac unattended. You could set the Display
to lock if you wanted to.

Cheers,
Ronni

"Short Answer to 'Can you Disable Keychain Completely' : No.
Apple's OS X requires at least one admin user account tied to a

See <http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106156> for more
details.

The core philosophy behind Mac OS X is that a user with Admin

to enter his/her password to install or update any software.
This is a big part of what makes the Mac so much more secure than
other platforms
and there is rightly no way around it."

Re: Keychain?

2009-08-27 Thread James Devenish

Hi Hugh,

You may find that you can go into Safari preferences > Security and
then turn off the auto-fill of passwords. This may then mean Keychain
is not longer used in Safari.

However, a common explanation of this problem is if the password for
the user has changed, in which case the fix is to change the Keychain
password to match the account password. The reason this step is
required is because the Keychain password is used for encrypting the
password, and hence Keychain needs to go through the process of using
the old password to de-crypt the chain followed by using the new
password to re-encrypt the chain.

delete the login keychain found in the Library/Keychains folder of the
problem account.
The next time you launch Safari it will complain about not finding a
keychain and you can choose to reset to defaults. Enter the password
for that account and a new keychain is created. That will fix the
problem, I see it quite often.
If you have lots of stuff in the keychain you don't want to lose you
can try keychain first aid first. Sometimes that repairs it too.

NO, they require Keychain to store their passwords to login to their

It's worrying me ... why you want to "Turn Off" Keychain? Are you

You asked this question before back on 5 November 2006.
My answer to you then, and now is the same.

Begin Quote from my email:

"Short Answer to 'Can you Disable Keychain Completely' : No.
Apple's OS X requires at least one admin user account tied to a
password.
See <http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106156> for more
details.

The core philosophy behind Mac OS X is that a user with Admin
privileges *needs*
to enter his/her password to install or update any software.
This is a big part of what makes the Mac so much more secure than
other platforms
and there is rightly no way around it."

Or disable it for certain apps, like safari?

In Safari, you could try turning OFF AutoFill.
Open Safari, choose Preferences > Autofill and uncheck all three

Re: Keychain gone freaky

2004-06-18 Thread Shay Telfer

Hello, WAMUGgers,
Suddenly, without warning, keychain access seems to have
changed its password. I'm the only one who uses this machine, and I
didn't do it! I have always left it at the default password, the
same one I use to start the computer. This password no longer
works. I looked in Help, and found the following advice and tried
it, but it hasn't worked.

Reboot. See if the Keychain works. Make a backup of your keychain.
Then try opening Keychain Access and then choose Keychain First Aid
from the Window menu. You should then be able to verify or repair the
keychain.

If 10.2.8 doesn't have this option, you can download a Keychain First
Aid application from Apple.

While you're at it run Disk Utility and DiskWarrior (if you've got
it) over your drive to see if there's anything amiss they can detect.

Good luck,
Shay

Re: Keychain & passwords

2002-12-02 Thread Shay Telfer

Entourage keeps asking for passwords for my mail account, even though I
entered them in accounts, they disappear. I tried to access the keychain
but that is locked even tho I'm logged in. I tried using keychain firstaid,
but that says it can't open key chain either. Anybody got a clue?

You could always try deleting your keychain and creating a new one.
This assumes of course that you can remember all the passwords in it!

Keychains are in ~/Library/Keychains folder.

If your keychain password is the same as your login password the
keychain should be unlocked automatically when you login.

If you've installed the old PGP beta I've got a sneaking suspicion
that it interacts poorly with the Keychain at the moment, so you
might want to update the PGP beta.

Have fun,
