Unfortunately, firmware update file is only compatible with a Windows computer.

You can only update the 3G21 modem by using downloading the file to a Windows
Computer, connect the modem to the Windows Computer using an ethernet cable.
Lastly run the file from the Windows computer to your modem.

Hi Vlad,

This does not surprise me ;-)
Have you been able to update the firmware using a Windows machine?
It would help if you can update the firmware.

If you have not updated the firmware yet, make sure you read the 3G21WB
Firmware Upgrade Instructions
located here with the firmware.
http://support.netcomm.com.au/sm/firmware/3g21wb
It explains what to do if you have a Mac:

If you have a MAC

Step 1 of 3: Install the BigPond Elite Network Gateway on a Windows computer by
using the installation USB stick that came with your kit.
Step 2 of 3: Follow the upgrade instructions for Windows users above.
Step 3 of 3: Once you've upgraded your device, you can continue using your
device on your Mac as normal

Re: Slow connections and ISP excuses

2012-10-11 Thread Vladimir James
Ronni,

I have not tried to update using a Windows machine. I'd given up up using
Windows machines a few years ago [because I could ;-) ]. However, I tried using
my old copy of Parallels (v5.0.9 etc) with Windows 98 SE. I followed the
instructions as far as I was able. After getting the msg that I needed to
increase my video memory, which I did not know how to do, everything came to a
halt. I could no longer abide by the instructions.

I won't try to use a Windows machine. I'm exploring other solutions, most of
which get me out of BigPond, hopefully. Thanks for your interest and time.

Regards,
Vlad

Re: Slow connections and ISP excuses

2012-09-30 Thread Vladimir James
Ronni,

Thank you for advising me of the firmware update
http://support.netcommwireless.com/product/3g/3g21wb BigPond should have so
advised me.

I followed the firmware update instructions, but I am not sure the update was
effective, as I did not receive an acknowledgement to that effect. The
instructions were not as clear as I would have liked, what with all the
references to Windows. Nevertheless, I noted these changes on re-connecting:

Safari Version 5.1.7 (6534.57.2) is very lively, much more so than I have seen
in many months. A vast improvement in browser speed.
Speedtest.net results: Download speed 1.50 Mbps Upload speed 0.61 Mbps at 6
PM, at time when it has usually been much slower.

In a word, the connection is better. However, I will be looking for a different
ISP. The last time I did this, BigPond was the only choice.

With thanks,
Vlad

Re: Slow connections and ISP excuses

2012-09-29 Thread Ronni Brown
Hi people,

I should clarify my previous comment before I have the Bigpond 'speed police'
contacting me :)
My comment referred mainly to Bigpond ADSL more than 3G.
If you can't get ADSL in your area and have to use 3G; Telstra 3G Network 4G
Network is the best available for coverage and speed.

Some ISPs 'throttle' their speed during high traffic peak time when they
experience congestion.

Cheers,
Ronni
