The New Mayberry

2006-03-26 Thread John W. Sasser
Re: What set was the Mayberry reunion show filmed at, California universal
studios maybe? The show where Ernest T did the loch nest monster trick in
the lake.

That was filmed in Los Olivos, CA, about seventy miles north of my house
here in SoCal (http://www.losolivosca.com). We've been there, and it looks
just like I remember it in the TV movie. They even have the flagpole in the
center of the street, just like in the movie. A charming little
Mayberryesque town. TV's Daniel Boone, Fess Parker lives there, has a
winery there, and has his Fess Parker's Wine Country Inn Spa (
http://www.fessparker.com/index.htm) there. The Michael Jackson ranch is
there, just on the outskirts, and actress Bo Derek lives just south of there
in a village called Santa Ynez. A beautiful area!

Thelma Lou amused at Barney

2006-03-26 Thread Janet Anderson
In my last post, I mentioned that Thelma Lou graciously overlooked most of
Barney's flaws. In fact, she often seemed affectionately amused by them.
That's one of the things I really like about Thelma Lou's character. She was
aware of her man's flaws, but she didn't ridicule or criticize them. Instead,
she found them rather endearing.

One of my favorite such moments is in the Cave Rescue episode when Thelma Lou
convinces Barney to explore the old mining cave, which Andy and Helen have
already entered. Barney walks in reluctantly, pressing his hat down over his
head for fear of bats which, he insists, will lay their eggs in your hair and
make you go crazy. When Thelma Lou tells him that he's seen nothing but a
moth, Barney says that moths can do the same thing! I love to watch Betty
Lynn's face during this scene. Though she chides him a bit for his unwarranted
fears, she is clearly getting a real kick out of Barney's silliness. You can
almost here her thinking to herself, Isn't he a hoot? I sure do love him!

Do any of you recall other moments when Thelma Lou is amused by something
Barney says or does?

Thelma Lou,
(Janet)

Thelma Lou Juanita

2006-03-26 Thread Janet Anderson
In 1990, TBS aired a special 30th anniversary tribute with several cast
members, including Don Knotts and Betty Lynn. At one point, they took
questions from the audience, and some tall skinny goober stood up and asked
Betty if Thelma Lou ever found out about Juanita down to the diner. Betty
replied that Thelma Lou was no dummy, and that she was well aware of
Barney's activities. Don added that Thelma Lou was always Barney's #1 girl,
and that Barney saw Juanita only occasionally, to get a little on the
side.

Yes, Paul, I remember that from the special. Still, I think that was Betty's
own interpretation and not necessarily the writers' intent. When you consider
how upset Thelma Lou was whenever the Fun Girls came to town -- and Barney
didn't even instigate or encourage those encounters! -- it seems unlikely that
Thelma Lou would turn a blind eye to Barney's relationship with Juanita. I
don't think that would be consistent with her character. It's true that Thel
graciously overlooked many of Barney's flaws (even found them endearing and
amusing), but she was not shy about calling him on the carpet when he was
keeping company with another woman, even one who was clearly only looking for a
good time. Of course, that's *my own* interpretation of Thelma Lou's
character!

There's that old saying, The wife (or long-time steady girlfriend, in this
case) is always the last to know!

FWIW,
Thelma Lou

Re: Jerry Van Dyke

I read that Jerry Van Dyke, who we all know played the banjo-playing deputy
in the final bW episode, was offered the role of Knotts' replacement. Is
that true? I've never heard or read that before.

That has been mentioned on the list before, Van Dyke supposedly had a choice
between being Barney's replacement and starring in My Mother the Car. He
supposedly and regrettably chose what's considered one of the biggest flops and
worst TV series of all time, a mistake he has supposedly acknowledged.
Ironically, My Mother the Car co-starred Jack Burns' comedy partner, Avery
Schreiber. For all practical purposes his choice gave both of them some work
that
year.

Personally I think Van Dyke's character would've worn out fast if he remained
like he was on that one episode, even though I loved him as Luther on
Coach.

Northern Person in the Flesh

2006-03-26 Thread ME Ryan
Hi ya'll,
Just a quick note to say howdy-do from Northern New York (yes, there
is something above the city) and to let you know we are die hard fans
of TAGS as well. I think the passing of Don Knotts was one of the
saddest events for me in recent memory (as well as for some of my
friends). The tears on my pillow do bespeak the pain which is STILL
in my heart. I absolutely LOVED that man and will always be sad I
could not have seen him or met him sometime. I think there are many,
many, ways someone can be a great humanitarian and I think giving
laughter and an example of kindness and caring are certainly as real
and as important as any other form of work. How many youngsters were
taught great lessons through TAGS? How many bad days ended a little
better because of TAGS? In all seriousness Don Knotts, Andy Griffith
and their entire crew have done something so good ...it is a
cardinal act of mercy for a hurting world. Thank God in Heaven for
the goodness they have bestowen. Oh how my heart sings...

PS I grew up 35 miles from Canada and my brother is a 25 year deputy
sheriff there (Jefferson County); he still lives in the house we grew
up in built before 1865; I live now in Central New York.

Juanita was , those days what was refered to as one who had a
reputation it was totally hypocrtical but thats how it was. I saw
Juanita the other day. She has retired and is worth over 1 billion
dollars. She took all those tips that Barn and the diners gave her
and invested in some great stock and just had a great life. Juanita
may have been the working other woman but she wasn't stupid. Heck,
she took that 25 cents that Barn gave Olive and all Olives 4 kids
went to Ivy League schools. I hear Olive lives near Oprah and her
best friend, Ego , and Oprah is on anohter diet. Saw the willow ware
at my Kroger, too. Nice real, nice .Gotta get back to the big house
Until we meet again,Maude

TAGS season 5

2006-03-26 Thread lisadanj
Finally, I got my TAGS season 5 yesterday. I told my husband I got season 5
just in time for season 6 to come out. I did have to wait longer than I
wanted to wait, but now I can stretch out on the couch and watch some Andy!
I am looking forward to the next seasons but it did make me kinda sad when I
saw on the box Don Knott's final season. It sort of had a double meaning
to it, since season 5 was his last TAGS season and he so recently left us
for heaven, too. Well, I can enjoy watching him and Andy in their prime on
DVD! :) Lisa
