Fundraiser for Dave Vaught of the VW Boys
Dear Friends, I am writing to tell you of a fundraiser we are doing for our friend Dave Vaught of the VW Boys. For those of you who have been to Mayberry Days over the years you will undoubtedly know Dave if you've taken in the VW's concert. Dave has developed pre-cancerous cells on the base of his esophogus and must have a procedure every two months. Well, it ain't cheap to have it done and although Dave stays busy doing his magic and with the VW's, it is still a burden. Tim White and I decided to do a fundraiser and it will be this Friday night in Bristol Virginia at the Cameo Theatre on State Street. If you are in the area and can make it we sure would like to have you come. For more details and to support Dave even if you can't come to the fundraiser go to www.VWBoys.com and click on Dave's picture in the upper right hand corner of their home page. Any amount you can do is appreciated. No gift is too small when you are going through something like this. We would sure love to see you there on Friday at 7:30 p.m. but if you can't come to the concert, you can still participate by going to the site and giving. Here is the confirmed line up of entertainers donating their time for Dave: David Browning as the Mayberry Deputy Phil Fox as Ernest T. Mayberry Squad Car for Sale!!
Dear digest friends, I recieved a call from a lady in New York wanting to sell a 1962 Mayberry Squad car. Here is the email she sent at my request: The car is a 1962 Ford Galaxie, painted flat black and white, not glossy, with a bubble light on top, and a working siren. It has 3 speeds on the column, and a police radio (just for show). It runs well, and is a real head turner. It is fun to drive, and see people smile when they watch it go by. I am asking $8400.00 for it or best offer. I would not pay to ship the car, but would help in finding someone to ship it. The dash is autographed by David L. Browning, " The Mayberry Deputy". Premiere of Return of the Killer Shrews
I posted last week regarding the Premiere of the movie Return of the Killer Shrews starring James Best, John Schneider, Bruce Davison and Jennifer Lyons. I posted that the date would be July 28th but need to revise that to July 27th due to unforseeable needs at the venue where we are doing the event. Go to www.FoundationEventFacility.com if you would like more info or want to buy tickets. Return of the Killer Shrews
Hey Friends, Just a note to let you know that Return of the Killer Shrews starring James Best (Jim Lindsey on TAGS and Rosco P. Coltrane on Dukes of Hazzard), John Schneider (Bo Duke from Dukes of Hazzard) and Bruce Davison (Willard, XMen) will have a premiere in Bristol TN on July 28th. This is going to be a red carpet event with media, limo's and a full evening of being with the star's of the movie. There will be dinner and dancing and the showing of the movie. You can go to my wed site for a link to where you can buy tickets and since seating is limited I think the tickets will go fast. The Foundation Event Facility is the venue and it is a beautifully reworked building in downtown Bristol. I actually worked in the department store where it is when I was a young man. Now it is a state of the art event facility and Patty and I have had so much fun working with the Foundation folks to put this event on. There is one more thing, all of the profits from the event will go to support the Speedway Children's Charities locally and we are very excited about that since all of their money goes to local children's programs. James Best is confirmed to attend as well as Rick Hurst who were both in Dukes of Hazzard. We also have Jennifer Lyons, Jason Scott, Chris Goodman, Pat Moran, the Director of the movie, Steve Latshaw and Dorothy Best who was executive producer of the movie. You can check each of these wonderful actors out on IMDB.com Here is the link to buy tickets. https://www.xorbia.com/e/foundation/returnofthekillershrews Tickets are $100.00 for your chance to participate in this red carpet event. Star arrivals, dinner, movie premiere and dancing. It looks like tickets are starting to sell pretty quick so if you have an interest I hope you'll buy yours now. Patty and I had a fantastic time playing our roles in this movie and bringing it to our town will be so much fun and will be a chance to honor James Best who has been so warm and kind to all the fans of TAGS and Dukes. Mayberry Days and Italy
Friends, Just wanted to add my two cents to the nice posts about Mayberry Days. After the 50th celebration last year, I arrived in Mt. Airy last wednesday with a bit of trepidation about how many folks would come back. What a pleasant surprise to find the golf tournament sold out, Doug Dillards concert was awesome, James Best's one man show awesome, Karen Knotts show awesome, Ronnie Schell's show awesome, Colonel Tim's afternoon and evening show's are so much fun. So many shows and great audiences for each. I have only listed a few here but there were others, Embers etc. The crowd was not as large, of course, but the quality was still there and everyone I interacted with was having a great time. The parade was lined all the way from the beginning to the end and we really enjoyed being in it. The stars that came this year were fabulous and all the tributes who came and worked hard were just great. Highlight's for me personally was 1. The Pork Princess, 2. The Pickle Queen, 3. A female deputy and female Floyd opening Colonel Tim's, and 4. Collin Watkin's singing I Wish Life Was Like the Andy Griffith Show. Maggie Peterson's beautiful voice was evident at Colonel Tim's and Elizabeth MacRae's singing is still the same as when she sang on Gomer Pyle USMC (hmmm). Margaret Kerry delighted each audience, and what a great visit from George Lindsay, Jr., people will not forget his costume for the parade. George Spence was his stirling self and we got to know Bruce Bilson. Jan McNees story at the church service Sunday morning was so moving and won't be forgotten by those in attendance. Morgan Brittany was also a nice new addition to the festivities. Michael Hoover continues to amaze with his incredible voice. Betty Lynn's presence is the icing on the Mayberry cake. It is always nice to go to Mayberry Days and see people that I might get to see only once a year. This year our old buddy Lyle Fales made it and I hadn't seen him in a long time. What a treat. I want to thank LeRoy McNees for accompanying me on Dobro while I tried to sing(ha) Rock and Roll Rosie from Raleigh and I never get tired of being on stage with James Best. He was in rare form this year. Overall it was a great Mayberry Days. I have never written a post pertaining to MD's in the past and thought it would be a good idea to let each of you know that from my side of the event it was wonderful, in spite of the downpour on Friday morning. If you can come next year, you should try. Surry Arts works so hard to make it a great event and the city of Mt. Airy puts on the dog and is very proud to host it. Please check out my web site posted here for upcoming dates. I might be in your area. also, check out www.mountainmusicentertainment.com for Mayberry Moments show that I do with Rodney Dillard and Maggie Peterson. You can also go to http://rodneydillard.tv/?page_id=331 to access it directly. There is also a link on my web site for my show "From Gettysburg to Mayberry". I will be in Philadelphia performing with my daughter in a piece called "Lincoln Luck" in February and will post more info on that on the site in the next few weeks. My daughter Lindsay is in Italy to choreograph the dance segments of the opera "Romeo and Juliet and will be there until late November. Keep her in your thoughts and prayers as she tackles this incredible opportunity. Hope to see you down the road!! David (and the Pork Princess) David L. Exciting News from Patty and David Browning - The Mayberry Deputy
Dear Friends, I have an exciting announcement about my middle child (daughter) Lindsay who is a professional modern dancer in the Philadelphia area. Lindsay has been working very hard for the last six years pursuing her career and often takes on jobs to support her chosen career. A few months ago she auditioned and was cast in an east coast premier of an opera in Philly and continually works with company's like Group Motion and SCRAP. She will be going to Italy with SCRAP later this month. Here is the exciting news! Lindsay answered an ad a few weeks ago as an assistant to a magician. His name is Michael Grasso and he actually hired Lindsay for one purpose, to assist him with his audition for America's Got Talent. They rehearsed and then went to the New York audition. That audition is going to be aired on next Tuesday June 15 on NBC. Lindsay is not the person vying for the spot but she is assisting and will be on. We are so happy for her and hope that many of our friends will tune in to watch. They were actually on a promo for the show last night and that same promo is on NBC.com now. Thanks for letting me share this with each of you and I hope you watch. Peace, David David L. We sure did miss our Opie (Jamie Sullivan) but wish him the best as he prepares for a life of service. From the golf tournament to the Blue Angels and the auction on Friday night we all had a great time. It is awesome to see what Jerry and Sandra Pike have been able to accomplish in a few short years and even more awesome to realize that all their hard work is based in love for their son Joey and all the other special kids at Eagles Wings. Also, I wanted everyone to know that I sit here in Denver Colorado in anticipation of my son's wedding on Saturday the 15th of May. He has always been a source of joy and laughter in mine and Patty's lives and we are so happy he has found the love of his life. Vic's comments
Bravo Vic! Message: 8 Date: Sun, 23 Aug 2009 04:17:47 -0700 (PDT) From: Victor Friskey Subject: Living the Mayberry way To: wbmutbb@wbmutbb.com Cc: spinner1...@yahoo.com Message-ID: <199664.93043...@web112219.mail.gq1.yahoo.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1 Last Sunda my pastor was gone on vacation and being a retired pastor I was asked to fill in. I chose the absence of Thomas from the other diciples as a message and focused on what he had missed from that gathering. After church a couple of guys and I got into a conversation of what the young people are missing today compared to 'The Good Old days' I lived on a 160 acre 'poor man's farm' but we didn't know we were poor because no one ever told us we were. Our house was heated by coal stoves in each room. The upstairs had no heat and in winter I had to scrape frost off the window to look out.. We walked a mile to school every day there was no bus so no snow days. We drank water from a well and had to tie a rag around the spout to filter out the worms and bugs and dirt. NOBODY EVER GOT SICK. In summer if the water was too low in the creek we swam in a large concrete horse trough the cows drank from. I seldom wore shoes in summer except to bale hay. I got sunburned but never worried about UV rays and there was no such thing as sunblocker. In winter we had no 200 channel TV's or nintendos or IPods. we were outside working or making snow forts or tunnels using or own imagination. The teachers cared about their students and visited every home at least once a year. There were no child proof lids and we rode byclcles without helmets, cars without seatbelts or booster seats and it was a thrill to ride in the back of a pick-up truck. We play hide and seek, Andy-I - Over. we jumped from haylofts, trees, and roofs. We got scratched, cut , broke bones but nobody ever got sued or was threatened to have their children taken away. In school we used a #2 pencil ballpoint pens were taboo. If we got caught misbehaving we went to the principles office. I got caught throwing spitballs and had to chew a 5Lb coffee can full as punishment at recess. It took me two months to fill that can. There were no lawsuits if a teacher smacked us with a ruler or a book. To get to school functions we rode our bikes or walked, there were no 'Soccer moms'. When things were plentiful we didn't waste. when they were scarce we did without or conserved. If parents had to raise their kids today like my parents raised me they wouldn't. if kids today?had to live the lifestyle we lived then they couldn't. But we had freedom, failures, successes, and responsibilities. We asked for nothing from the government but was always ready to help at a moment's notice. We were proud and we made do and we SURVIVED.? Thomas may have?missed a lot not being with the other diciples but not as much as I miss those Mayberry days on the farm. Vic David L. The Untrained Voice/Joe Gritton/Tribute Writer Par-Excellant
Joe Gritton has so much feeling for Mayberry and it's message in our lives. I was so proud to perform the piece that he wrote. I first did it in 2000 at my home church and then last Saturday night in Berea SC at Berea First Baptist Church with their Minister Ronald Vaughan. What a thrill it is to take someone's idea and words and make them come to life. Joe, you are a prince and I am so grateful to have you as a friend and ghost writer. Also, my new friends Tom and Kathy Rusk couldn't have been nicer and some of the photo's from the show are priceless. So, thanks to all who make my life rich with words of kindness and friendship that lifts me and the audiences that I am blessed to perform in front of. David L. TCM reference
Hey Friends, I was watching Mickey Rooney in Tom Sawyer on TCM this morning and heard Tom and Big Jim discussing Biblical times. Tom was telling how the king decided to divide the child between two women and give them each half. Big Jim said, "You know Tom, I ain't never seen no half a boy." Made me think of "Pooor Haratio". Loss to the Mayberry family
Friends, Please keep the family of L.P. Venable in your prayers. L.P. passed away last Friday. For those of you who didn't know L.P. or haven't been to Mayberry Days in the past, he and his wife Alma operate the Mayberry Motor Inn in Mt. Airy, NC which is a second home to many of us tribute performers. L.P. and Alma have always been a picture of hospitality for us and the best of friends to us as well. We will still look forward to seeing Alma and the boys as time goes by, but we will always miss L.P. Longing for Mayberry
Ken Anderson wrote: Oh how I yearn for the peace and quiet of our beloved Mayberry, on October 28. I recommend everyone read it again. What Ken was talking about is what we all come to this site for. A little peace and quiet and maybe a little reflection. Hard to come by. I spoke at a police chaplains conference in Cannon Beach Oregon a few years ago and when I went into the room there was no t.v., radio or newspaper. I spent three days there and didn't hear one word about what was going on in the world, it was so peaceful. I walked down the snow covered streets looking for a store to buy some bread and balogne since there was a snow storm in the area and no food had been able to get in to the conference center. I found a little market and bought my food. I gave the guy a twenty. No bells and whistles on the register or was a membership in the food club card asked for, the man just reached up, punced in the amount I owed, cranked the handle on the side of the register and out came the cash drawer. I spent three days in that paradise called Cannon Beach and I haven't been as peacefull since. Thanks for reminding me of that wonderful place, Ken. You keep writin in, I'll keep readin'. Hey friends, I know Jeff Branch really appreciates the good thoughts by everyone while he is on the mend. I was talking with the Mayberry Deputy and he told me under conditions of anonimity (sp), "Ya know, I have been on patrol with Deputy Branch numerous times and tho he is real good at driving, he's not much of a walker. You really have to watch it in Troy, NC, it's a jungle, ya never know when another beast will drive away from the curb.". David Browning _ Helping your favorite cause is as easy as instant messaging. Howard (Jeff Branch) Sprague
Hey Friends, I have tried a couple of times to give an update on Jeff Branch but haven't seen them posted, so I'll try again. Jeff is up and around and on crutches. He says he is in some pain but not like the pain he had innittially after the accident. He will go for an MRI on March 12 and know the results on the 18th. We all have Jeff in our prayers for a speedy recovery. Some of you may not know that Jeff is also a top notch DARE officer in Montgomery County North Carolina. He very well could be one of the best in the country. We enjoy the fun he brings as Howard, but we might want to say a little prayer for the students who care about Jeff. RE: WBMUTBB Digest, Vol 8, Issue 238
Hey Friends, Boy it has been a long time since I last posted here in our little corner of the world. Hope everyone is doing well and getting ready for Mayberry Days in Mt. Airy. I have had a busy Spring and Summer and looking forward to Sept. and all that it brings. I enjoy so much reading each day the comments and such that are posted. We have some of the most creative and inventive people on the web on this site. You should be mighty proud of yourselves. Allan Newsome is a genius, no question about it, and I look forward to performing with him as often as possible as well as with the other tribute artists we have who love TAGS. The reason for my posting is that I was in northern Illinois last week at the Winnebago county fair and on Friday morning Patty and I took a little side trip to Roscoe, Il to the Historic Auto Attractions museum. If you are in that area at any time you should go. The have limousines from U.S. Grant to Eisenhower. Nixon and FDR automobiles. They have a Kennedy assassination area with all kinds of items from the JFK collection. But the big deal for me was that we heard that they had a Mayberry Squad car on display. We went through the whole museum and near the end, there it was. We started to look around and realized that it was the same squad car that was owned by Hank Gerdes the former mayor of Amboy, Il who had me there in his town from 94 through 97 at depot days. The interesting thing, however, was that he had this car at the Squad Car reunion at Bob Shibes in Ohio in July of '93 and George Lindsay, Jeannie Carson, Howard Morris, Betty Lynn and I signed the outside of it. There it was just the way I remembered it. All signatures were visible and it almost brought me to tears. These special people who have been so kind to me and all the other tributes, some still with us and some gone to their rewards but all of them stars not only for their work on TAGS but for their work with all the fans over the years. If you get a chance you should go to this museum. Maybe on your way to the Bed and Breakfast up in Wisconsin.
