2013-09-02 Thread Johnna Bixenman
I know that TVLand has been a hot topic on here at times, but I have to say
that I had a great six weeks this summer with Andy on the channel each
weekday morning, then I had a great day cleaning house all day today while
listening/watching Andy. I have played my DVD's all day on a holiday such
as this, but there's just something to having the show on actual TV.

In the Christmas episode, it dawned on me that the jail appears not to have
glass on the windows in the cells. Mr. Weaver stood on a box and held tight
to the cell window bars, but there was no glass in sight. I remember on
another episode Barney had rope around the bars and going to open the cell
(can't remember who he was trying to set free...).

Happy Labor Day to you and yours.

I'm just curious...

2013-07-07 Thread Johnna Bixenman
Hello, Fellers,

I've noticed a few things lately that are preying on my mind:

1. In the show when Sheldon was going to give Opie a black eye if he didn't
hand over a nickel, I noticed that Andy's bedroom has an opening like a
walk-out patio in it - he was near it when Opie showed up to give him his
clothes so that he could change and Aunt Bee wouldn't get mad. Then in the
episode where Gomer is a house guest, Andy's bedroom doesn't have the walk-out
patio - just a window that looks out onto the street.

2. In the first episode when Aunt Bee comes to live with them, there is a step
up inside the house to open the front door. This is the only episode I
remember this being in.

3. In the episode where Andy and Helen explore the mine and it collapses,
Barney sets up a town search party. When Andy and Helen are at her house so
she could change clothes, they hear the report on the radio. Helen says she'd
better let them know that she and Andy are all right. She picks up the phone
and says, Sarah, get me the Sheriff's office. Now if she's with Andy and
Barney's at the rescue site, who would be at the Sheriff's office for her to
contact? Was Gomer supposed to stay there or something?

4. Also, if Andy and Helen explored the cave, why did he get so mad at Opie
for being at the Jackson Mine when Opie was bored from planting spinach?

Thank ya, Fellers.

Barney's apartment

2013-03-08 Thread Johnna Bixenman
In the episode where Barney is cooking chili in his apartment and Mrs.
Mendlebright smells it, there is no refrigerator to the right of the door.
However, in the episode where the crook puts drops in Barney's milk, there is a
refrigerator to the right of the door, near Barney's bed. My question is: On
top of the refrigerator, there is a large round something that I can't figure
out what it is. Can anyone help identify the object?

Announcement of new RWC

2013-03-08 Thread Johnna Bixenman
Folks,

I'm pleased as punch (in the nose) to announce that a new chapter of TAGSRWC
has been established in MACON, MISSOURI! It's called BLOOD BROTHERS, and our
first organizational meeting is going to be Sunday afternoon/evening, April 7.
We might have meat, tators, and bread, plus lots of singing, watching TAGS, and
other surprises.

This is a most welcome event in my life. In March 2011 my brother and I had to
move our mom to an assisted living community, and for over a year she fought
us. Finally, in June of last year, she decided to sell her household items and
really embrace the friends in her new living quarters. Her sale was July 25,
and as luck would have it, she fell on July 27 and suffered a spinal cord
injury which left her paralyzed until she finally passed on November 14. The
holidays were so difficult, but things are looking brighter now. Mom lost her
appetite for food and TV, her two favorite things. The only thing she let me
turn on TV was TAGS. That was about the only thing that would get a smile from
her. So you can see how TAGS is special to my family.

I'm taping a segment on TAGS for a local TV station this afternoon, so Andy's
been on my mind for a few weeks in preparation for it. Nothing like TAGS to
get us through lifes toils and troubles.

There was the doctor (played by Fr. Mulcahy) who took out Opie's tonsils and
Andy was leary of the operation from an inexperienced doctor.

Barney was Dr. Pendike selling Miracle Salve. Does that count?

While we're on this train of thought, how many people are seen or mentioned in
he show with doctorates? Not the M.D.s. There are bunches of those, but the
cademic doctorates. Can anyone name them?

I am assuming the following would have had academic doctorate degrees: (I am
including psychology but not veterinarians)

Dr. Harrison Everett Breen of New York City, the visiting preacher
Neil Bentley, Attorney at Law (It takes a doctorate now - not sure about then.)
The Lady Goober dated after the computer matchup. (Wasn't she a psychologist?)
Lee Drake, another lawyer
Arthur Harrington, Ron Bailey's attorney
A number of attorneys
Frank - the friend of Peggy who was a pharmacist
Fred - Ellie's uncle
Dr. Merle Harmon, (He was a licensed PPD according to Barney)
Jack, Charlie's nephew was a candidate for a degree in Psychology...

Who else?

Brad Neil Bentley Cunningham (Dr. Cunningham, actually )

Dillards

2009-08-19 Thread Johnna Bixenman
Congrats to the Dillards for their accomplishments. I feel compelled to
share a story about them. On July 5, 2008, I attended the Sally Mountain
Bluegrass Festival in Queen City, Missouri, Rhonda Vincent's old stomping
ground and the festival that's hosted by her parents, Johnny and Carolyn.
Rodney and Doug were there for an afternoon question/answer/performance time
and an evening performance. They were magnificent! Rodney told the story
of them wanting to get to L.A. and left Missouri to make it as far as
Oklahoma. Finally they made it to L. A. and they went to the lobby of a
hotel to just jam, and a guy approached them and said his name. He was a
famous talent scout for a record company, and they had no idea who he was.
Then there was an ad in the newspaper for a hillbilly type bluegrass band
that was called for in a script for TAGS. They went in to Desilu Studios
and auditioned in front of Andy and others. Rodney said they hadn't played
but a few measures when Andy stood up, slapped his knees, and exclaimed,
That's it! Rodney thought Andy had heard enough, so he told the boys to
gather their instruments and leave. Andy said, No, son, you don't
understand. You got the job. Later on Andy realized that since the
Darling Boys never spoke words, they wouldn't receive residual pay, so he
made sure they were given credit for the songs they played. He said Andy
was a great guy all along. Then of course, we all knew that.

Mayberry Cafe

We had the pleasure of dining at the Mayberry Cafe in Danville, Indiana
yesterday afternoon on our way through the area (OK, it was our lunchtime
destination driving back from vacation). We got to town before they opened
and were walking around the square when we met some other out of town folks
who were also killing time before lunch. We invited?them to join us and
shared?stories like we were old friends. Something about Mayberry that can
help create those special moments in life.

Jeff

I'm taking my mom to Nashville Friday and Saturday to enjoy a special meal
at Stockyard Steakhouse, look through the Country Music Hall of Fame, attend
the Mike Snider Show Saturday afternoon, and have front row seats at the
Grand Ole Opry Saturday night. Sunday we're heading north to the
Indianapolis area for our sixth or so visit to the Mayberry Café before
heading back home to Missouri. We always try to incorporate Mayberry into
our vacations whenever possible. Can't wait. Maybe we'll be lucky and talk
to folks like Jeff did.

Me? I'm heading to Nashville.

Alaska

2009-06-05 Thread Johnna Bixenman
My mom and I returned home Monday night (which happened to be Andy's
birthday) from a wonderful Alaskan cruise, a trip of a lifetime. While on
water, I sure was glad Henry was not there to jinx us! Rocking to and fro
at night in bed was pure adventure sleepin'! Standing on our balcony
observing wildlife, I just had to think Golllyyy as we spied a bald eagle,
a sea otter swam beside us, and whales flipped in the distance. Then riding
the train from Whittier to Anchorage we saw two moose, and I just know the
Mayberry huntin' fellers would have loved to have seen them. It's the
beginning of salmon season, so I'm sure the guy who gave Andy such trouble
fishing in his fishin' hole would have loved that! The food and service on
the ship were exceptional, but there's one thing I wasn't familiar with.
One night after dinner I tried that Baked Alaska, you know, the dessert that
came out after Alaska became a state. Sure didn't taste like the kind I had
before. Had trouble reading the menu a time or two with new-fangled words
foreign to this Midwesterner, but thank goodness I never accidentally
ordered snails and brains!

New cats in town

Last October I had to put my dear orange tabby cat Opie to sleep due to old age

best friend named a special one Mayberry. She's quite a young fun gal - just
turned a year old this month, and last night, Mayberry had her own first kindle
- two black ones and one white/orange spotted. I have put a bucket on my head
and thunk and thunk of what to name these little ones, and right away, Winkin,
Blinkin and Nod came to mind, but I'm afraid I wouldn't be able to communicate
with them. Barney's not around to translate what they meow-er to me. Any
Mayberry name ideas?

Waitress

2007-06-01 Thread johnna bixenman
I was so excited to see Waitress last weekend! I REALLY enjoyed it. I have to
respectfully disagree with Aunt Bee and others who have not recommended the
movie. It's a Hollywood story, remember, and we can't expect it to be
Mayberry-like just because Andy is in it. It was GREAT seeing Andy on the big
screen, and the character actresses were g--d. Now, I'm not saying I
agree with the immoral behaviors, certainly not! But I go to the movies to
forget my problems, and the characters' problems in this movie sure made me
forget mine for awhile! And, maybe you trained noticers are affecting me: for
those of you who have seen it, did you notice that Jenna's husband's name was
Earl, and at one point she called him Earlie? Curious, curious. Oh, and
thanks to those of you kind folks who have responded to my post about visiting

My favorite porch scene

2007-01-12 Thread johnna bixenman
Well, I can't let this subject go by without sharin' my favorite scene of all
times. It's the episode when Andy spends lots of time with Peg, and Opie gets
jealous and worried that his pa won't have time for him anymore. Peg leaves a
message with Opie at the jail, but Opie accidentally drops it in the waste
basket with his foot! Peg finally catches up with Andy in front of his house
and tells him off. Opie overhears them speaking, and as Andy contemplates what
just happened, Opie confesses that he threw away the message. Andy does a
great job showing an angry emotion, and as Opie shares his feelings, you can
see Andy melt. When he takes him on his lap and explains to Opie that he's a
part of him and no one can take his place, I just tear up. Then I burst out
laughing when Andy says he can't take Barney to a dance. And finally when Andy
says they're buddies, my throat is all choked up. Gets me every time. I love
all the porch scenes, but this one has to be the most touching of them all.

Taylor Home Inn

2006-06-08 Thread johnna bixenman
Regarding Ken's post about staying at the Taylor Home Inn, I'm proud to tell
all that my mom, my friend, and I have reservations (since last November!) to
stay two nights there, August 14 15. We have the entire house booked so we
can get away from it all, sit on the front porch, maybe drink a bottle of pop,
and listen to the barking dogs. I hope Dave or Marsha play the guitar as none
of us do, and it seems like we'd need a little music to make it complete.
Perhaps my mom will take along her embroidery. If it's hot enough, we might
sip some iced tea also. I hope not to be in a hurry to do anything. I am sure
we'll not have to do any adventure sleepin'.

By the way, remember awhile back there was all the controversy about the
sleep pants? Well, I was hoping folks would remember the post pertaining to
inserting the words sleep pants instead of the real dialogue. The best one
is, of course, the one I remember: Yeah, son, but don't the sleep pants seem
nice and full? Would anyone please share that list again? That was one of
the best items I've ever read on here!!

I too, like Ken, hope to give a full report on our stay at the Taylor Home Inn.
