Thoughts...
Ken, I sure enjoyed your ponderings of your childhood and TAGS... I grew up in the mountains of West Virginia, with my parents watching Andy, Aunt Bee, Barney and the rest of the TAGS characters, and like you I have fond memories of a hard but happy childhood, with many similarities to Mayberry. I know that is one of the many reasons that I love the show so much - it touches my heart from those times of yesterday - such as Dad and I trying to peel apples without breaking the skin, while sitting on a summer porch overlooking those beautiful hills... I saw the episode last night where Bernanard P./Milton/Oliver Fife actually says "Who's been messing up the bulletin board?!" It's Roger, the lawyer sent to get practical law enforcement experience who is a stickler for rules and statistics. Christmas Thoughts
Just wanted to let everyone know that I had a very nice Christmas. It started out with us listening to Elvis singing "I'll have a Blip Christmas Without You." We opened gifts after that and I got a number of really special things but my favorite is a really nice blip sweater. Linda said she bought it because the color matches my blip eyes. I also received a nice birthstone ring and because I was born in September it has a beautiful blip sapphire in it. I hope everyone had a nice present. I wish we could post pictures here because we had a nice snowfall and I have four spiral Christmas trees on the lawn with blip lights and they look so nice with all our white snow. I trust that everyone will have a great new year and now that winter is upon us and Christmas is over you will not feel let down and have the winter blips. -- Ken Anderson The Mayberry Guru 2906 May Street Eau Claire, Wisconsin 54701 www.themayberryguru.com www.mayberryreflections.com ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/
More thoughts on Mayberry RFD
TAGS fans, Almost through season 1 of Mayberry RFD (and hoping they'll release 2!) and had some thoughts on the show: - After the first few episodes, when they were mostly establishing themselves (I guess), the show got much better. - How did Milly Swanson afford that huge house on the salary of a counter girl at a bakery?!?! It's made clear she doesn't own the bakery herself. One episode mentioned that she used to be a chorus girl, so maybe she made a lot of money at that and retired. - When Aunt Bee throws her engagement party, how come Andy and Opie don't attend? Prayers and a few thoughts
Charles Adkins, my prayers are with you and your family at this very difficult time. Please know that your dear wife is in a better place and that you will see her again. Dave Quinn ( aka Orville Hendriks), TVLand has a few good shows, but the interruptions by commercials for the less desirable ones are the downside. Generally, AntennaTV, MeTV, CoziTV and TVLand ( at times) seem the best suggestions for family viewing. Dave McClanahan, typos happen to all of us. Remember we can disagree with our Mayberry friends and neighbors without being disagreeable. Linda ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/
seven thoughts on women in Mayberry
When I grow up I want to be Miss Peggy. (specially how she can sing on the porch and make it sound like she's in a recording studio) ...roses love sunshine, violets love dew.. If I were a drinkin' woman, I'd want to try a Sazerac. And I would sample the snails and not let them go on by. I wonder if Chuck (the bigger they are the nicer they are)O'Malley is married. Maybe he was visiting the in-laws up in Dee-troit. Just about the sweetest scene of the series in my opinion is the one where Barney and Thelma Lou are looking at furniture in the window. The way she says, I know when he says he's not the kind of guy who can be pressured--her affection for him is, well, sweet. Oh, and I'd love to see the little fat mayor's wife ride out on that horse and light into hollerin opera stuff. My favorite thing to do of an afternoon is sit on the porch in a rocker and hum Rock of Ages. And number 7: with Aunt Bee I get on my knees and thank heaven I have a place to go and something to do. ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/

Thoughts Regarding the Many TAGS Sets
Wondering if anyone out there, like maybe our gifted Paul or Allan, might be able to share some light about all the various sets that were used on TAGS. I have been watching them closely lately and there are so many completely different sets that had to be created. ie, Taylor home, courthouse, barber shop, Foleys, drugstore, school room, Darlings cabin, church, diner, Mayor's office, Mrs. Mendlebright's, Helen's and Thelma Lou's houses, Jubell Foster farm, and countless other places that were set up in so much detail. Were some of these actual real places that were filmed on location or were they all created just for TAGS. I enjoy looking closely to see if I can see items that appear in different places but I honestly cannot ever remember finding anything. Knowing that the famous green pain was always seen, I imagine the walls that were built were often moved around to create various rooms, but the furnishings alone would have been so many different things. Re: More Thoughts about the Taylors
Ken I don't know how Andy's house was paid for, but he didn't inherit it. In the episode you mention, when Barney tried to get Andy to sell the house, he told Opie that when he bought the house, the ceiling had just been painted to hide the crack. I do like everyone's speculation about things never revealed. I always thought it would be interesting to know how/why Andy stopped seeing his earlier girlfriends. Thanks for all the Thoughts
Thanks to all of you who contacted me with your thoughts about whether or not I have to cover the police light. I loved the suggestion of using Mr. Schwamp's hairpiece. I really laughed out loud at that one. I finally have decided that I will not cover it. The majority of police officers I talked with assured me there will be no problem and after talking with other people who have Mayberry cars in Wisconsin it is quite clear it is not going to be an issue. I was at a car show tonight and a gentleman brought his restored 1959 ambulance. It had four large revolving red lights on top as well as three large sirens. He said he has never covered the lights in 10 years and has never had a problem. So if anyone thinks I might be the constable of Eau Claire because of the Thingamajig on the top of my car I will know he is probably from somewheres else. Maybe Eckmondwight England. I belong to a large church of 2500 members and have already been asked if I could dress in my uniform and bring the car to our preschool and give the kids rides in it with the siren going and light flashing in the large parking lot we have. Now that will really be fun. Good thing we had enough money to blacktop the parking lot and we did it without stimulus money from the government. Lots of luck to you and yours. Christmas Episode and thoughts
Thanks Janet and Allan for the attention on the Christmas Episode. Normally I watch on Christmas Eve, but I decided to have a preview to keep an eye on the Christmas Card Caper. Good discovery. Very interesting (listen to Two Chairs, No Waiting Podcast if you have not yet). As one additional comment on the cards.. did you notice that Barney tacks them up sideways? Who indeed messed up the bulletin board??? Another interesting tidbit, why did the prisoners in jail at the beginning have presents in jail with them? Someone mentioned getting a tear in the eye when Ben sings. I do as well, but for me, what make both eyes moist is when Aunt Bee says Ben The whole show, he had been trying to join the party. The whole time he was a lonely outcast. He longed for the fellowship and joy, and that home cooking. That hospitable enchanting calling of his name, Ben let him know that he had finally succeeded. What a moment! That plate of food and cup of drink signified the completion of his long-for goal of acceptance. Can't you feel his joy? This week I wish you all a moment when someone calls your name (like Aunt Bee did Ben's) . Maybe it's to the dinner table. Maybe it's a greeting when you step into a home. Maybe it's an invitation for a hug, or to get your attention to hand you a gift...but be ready for that joy of your name being called. Do everything that you can to keep yourself from having to sing through the bars alone. The celebration in Jail instead of a home is also meaningful to me. For the last 8-10 years of my father's life, we had to celebrate Christmas in the Community Room of his nursing home. We made it Christmas right there, thanks to Mom and all her planning. Maybe some will celebrate Christmas in a hospital..or from home but in bed...or over the phone across a distance...or perhaps a restaurant..but wherever it is.. Enjoy the simple pleasures of traditions and family and friends. And don't forget the subject of Ellie and Andy's Song. Thanks for the awesome Card, Newsome's. First class, as usual! Random Thoughts
While watching Andy the other night I got to thinking. In the first season, there was an episode where Barney thought Andy was making a play for Thelma Lou. To retaliate, Barney put on his best Rock Hudson hairdo, and made a play for Andy's girl, Ellie. And later in that show Ellie even made a play for Barney. What got me to thinking about it was I was watching the episode where Opie steals Thelma Lou away from Barney when Opie's little girlfriend, Karen, ignores Opie. I guess Andy would have to arrest Barney if Barney had turned the tables on Opie and made a play for his woman Karen. Them kind of goings on aint allowed in Mayberry. Last week someone posted that he thought Mr. Schwump must sound something like me. Well let me tell you something, I know Mr. Schwump, Mr. Schwump is a friend of mine, and Mr. Schwump does not sound anything like me. Although I will admit Mr. Schwump has better hair than I do. Thanks for the Don Knott's tributes and other thoughts
Thanks to those of you who have remembered the greatest character Actor that there ever was, Don Knotts. It doesn't seem possible he's been gone two years. Speaking of Radio broadcasts, two Cheers for Two Chair No Waiting, the Mayberry Podcast. I enjoyed hearing Bernard Fox last week. What A Gentleman he was in that interview, despite a certain interloper. I'm also kinda partial to episode 17, but I guess that the egomenerac in me. After hearing from Bernard (Malcolm) I flipped the TV over to bewitched last night to see if Dr. Bombay showed up and there was Darren's Parents. Do you know who they were? None other than that stodgy Magazine Publisher that tried to bring Andy down (Mr. Jackson?) and Howard's Mother!! So that would make Darren Howard's brother Figure??? Confusing when those actors get around. One more thought, speaking of fibs..even Aunt Bee was known to throw out the white lies. In the episode the Opie published his paper she lied about just passing by twice and about how good the Chicken Ala king was. thoughts on seeing Opie again (non-political)
It's fun to see Ron Howard act again. I literally grew up with the guy. He's a great actor. I'm not always fond of the films he directs but i like to watch the man act. Just some thoughts for everyone who writes in
I was Emailing this week with another veteran and decided I would jot down some thoughts, that may help folks who are new, and haven't posted to the Digest much. These are not rules, (only Allan makes the rules, and we all know the two rules) just realities that I've learned from years of sending in comments. I hope they are helpful. You regulars already know this, but you new-comers listen carefully whole Barney paces back and forth and reads this. Digest Posting Guidelines according to the Untrained Voice 1) Your Primary purpose of posting should be to inform, entertain, engage, and stimulate others who may or may not respond to your post. Some very thoughtful message get no response due to factors such as; a) Something else catches most of the attention b) Answer requires some thought or perhaps watching an episode or checking a book c) Shelf life of a discussion may just be a day until a new Digest inadvertently changes subject d) People Like the post, but have nothing to say in response. Not everyone is a plunger (dive right in and respond). Please know that messages with no responses are still read and enjoyed in this quiet virtual world. 2) Your thought or idea that is new to you, has probably been brought up before, and some veterans just don't feel like answering again and again (favorite episode, quote etc.). That's not to say that repeated topics are not welcome-just that some feel they've already had their say answering. You might no answers, or you might get 20. 3) Someone might respond to something you posted, but not your exact question. It's not an intended slight. (You always want to talk about something else and I want to talk about something else, ME -Ernest T Bass) 4) If you make a mistake, be it trivia, spelling, whatever...someone will probably kindly point that out. (you'd think a person that writes for a living would know how to spell Fife!) 5) You can't wear your emotions on your sleeve. In this medium, you can't see smiles, or tongue in cheek responses. Don't get your feelings hurt by what may have been an innocent attempt at humor. Polite competitive banter is just part of the culture. (I'm not sensitive-just high-spirited!) 6) For everything that you think you are the expert on, 10 other fans think the same thing of themselves. Enjoy the camaraderie and the exchanges. (Let John Masters just line then up and I'll take them on one at a time) 7) Some people are days behind when they read a Digest and respond, so they answer things that have already been answered (perhaps repeating your answer). (Yeah Barney, we heard that at School yesterday-Opie) 8) If you don't get an answer..it's OK to repeat your question. Again, shelf life of a day is not enough time for some folks. (What we needs is a daily newspaper, then this kind of thing wouldn't happen [lost $50}) 9) We're all just Digest Mayberrians and every day we get to write to or read the Digest is a privilege and we should treat it as such. There will always be things that we don't want to read about that DOES interest others. Like Aunt Bee's Pickles..just learn to love 'em. 10) Allan is Sheriff. He wears the badge. He does the work, (tirelessly) he makes the rules. Every once in a while we get an interloper who tries to tell him how to run the Digest. ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/

Thoughts on Goober
Much has been written about Sheriff Andy Taylor and Deputy Barney Fife. This is as it should be for they were indeed the stars of The Andy Griffith Show. However, I have a very special place in my heart for Goober Pyle. For Goober Pyle is a personification of so many people who live among us. There are many Goober Pyles in the world today and through no fault of their own they were born into conditions which limited their experiences and successes in life. Goober was not blessed with a great aptitude for learning. Neither did he have many of the social skills needed for success in life. He came from a poor family who could only provide him with the basic needs during his young life. Yet his family gave him love and instilled in him the importance of pride in one's work. It was these two characteristics which helped Goober to become the wonderful person he was. Despite his economic, intellectual, and social limitations, Goober Pyle had the same hopes and dreams as we all do. Goober wanted acceptance, friendship, love, and respect from others. As we came to know Goober Pyle, we found a very simple child-like man who found enjoyment in reading comic books and watching monster movies. He loved to hang around with his friends and he delighted in spending time with the children of Mayberry. Yet, somehow Goober just did not fit it. While his friends read novels and discussed world events, Goober read about Crab Monster and fixed flat tires and pumped gas. When Andy and Barney always had dates for the Harvest Ball, Goober sat alone in his rented room dreaming that somewhere there was a girl just for him. The wonderful thing about the people of Mayberry was that they accepted Goober for who he was. He was a hard worker who took a great deal of pride in his work. They didn't care about his education or his double breasted suit with the out of style tie. Goober was Goober. He was always willing to help a friend in need. He was very honest with his customers and he treated everyone with kindness. He loved going to work each day and he looked forward to greeting everyone with a smile and a yarn even if they just stopped in for a bottle of pop. We can learn a lot from Goober. We can learn that it doesn't take a college education or a high paying job to make one happy. We can learn that our friends will judge us by our actions and by our words - not by the cut of our clothes. But most of all we can learn that the meaning of success is relevant. Goober was indeed a successful man. He knew the meaning of love, honesty, pride, hard work, and friendship. And I am sure his parents would have been proud to see what a fine man he grew up to become. Kenneth G. Accd to Inside Mayberry, the phantom actor was in nine: 113, My Fair Ernest T. Bass; 133, the Education of Ernest T. Bass; 123, The Fun Girls; 141, Otis Sues the County; 175, Otis the Artist; 203, Only a Rose; 210, Floyd's Barbershop; 240, Barney Hosts a Summit Meeting; and 247, Sam for Town Council Seems like there were more, but it may be that Old Man Schwump was just so ubiquitous! DOUG GIBSON OGDEN, UT Well Doug, you never forget someone at your wedding or Bachelor party, and good ole Mr. Schwamp was at Andy's bachelor luncheon in a Mayberry RFD episode. As I have pointed our before most of these occasions were social gatherings and Mr. Schwamp never missed an opportunity to show up dressed up for root beer and polite murmuring. If fact on a couple of occasions (the Lodge and Sam for Council) he is shown early..but not later in the event. This is the basis for my theory that he gets a buzz from root beer and over-imbibes just a bit, and has to leave early. You didn't mention the Lodge episode in your official list, but I think he is there. He is seem murmuring in two episodes I believe, In the Fun Girls, he can be seen seated at a table with root beer in hand in the company of a La-dy murmuring. Also..(and this is just my theory) in Otis the Artist, he is at the big event and a woman says to him Those were nice fair speeches He misunderstands thinking she said hair piece and responds Thank You, I got it in Mt Pilot Did Barney say the line, I don't want to be standing in no stag line with old man Schwump and a bunch of slumped over teenage boys?
