2004-01-22 Thread Stephen Hutchinson
Hi Jac, The Maroon is a bit overpowering on the home page but once in
the site it's ok. You have achieved something different for a Mortgage
Company!

I really like the home page icons.

The text for the links in the site are a bit hard to read and some of
the mouse overs make them worse.

That's my thoughts.

Stephen Hutchinson

don't know about this one... the client was looking for something funky,
young and memorable as the majority of his clients would be young
couples (first time buyers) - kinda like the last thing you'd expect of
a mortgage site. But...I don't know if I got it right and I'm blue in
the face from looking at it and messing around with it - can someone
please have a look and let me know what they think. the homepage
(index), about us first time buyers are linked. Obviously there's a
lot to be done to the pages but I don't want to go any further until I
get someone else's opinion other than my own.

excuses excuses... the colours of the logo didn't help a lot either - as
you'll see the maroon red and dark blue make up the logo, not a lot to
work with :o(

thanks again

[wdvltalk] MySql front won't select - 2nd time

2004-01-22 Thread Joseph, Smile Poet
I have a table 'test' in database 'test' with two columns and 20 rows.
I have used both DBManager and MySql Front to select with this

SELECT*FROM test WHERE 1=orange; (after much sweat) this appears
to be acceptable syntax.

However, while the two fields are acknowledged both programs tell me
there are '0' rows.

a) have I missed something from the query?

OR

b) is there a fault in the program?

OR

c) might I have missed a step which makes the table contents clear to
the program?

hey, did you not like my poem?

i suspect you want the 1 to refer to the first column

you can do this only in the ORDER BY clause

in the WHERE, each item is interpreted as a literal or column

you have two literals there, a numeric 1 and a string orange

there's no way in hell that 1 will ever equal orange

what are the two column names in your table?

Mozilla 1.6, Win2k Pro

Jac,
I really think the pages could use a splash of constrasting
color. Something about the iconography awash in a sea of
maroon lacks 'oomph' to me. I've also been leaning heavily
toward not having my content stretch to fit the browser window
because it simply is not comfortable for my eyes[scr1], and I
have excellent sight. Here is a passage from Web Style Guide -
Basic Design Principles for Creating Web Sites:

--
The ideal line length for text layout is based on the the
physiology of the human eye... At normal reading distance the
arc of the visual field is only a few inches - about the width
of a well-designed column of text, or about 12 words per line.
Research shows that reading slows and retention rates fall as
line length begins to exceed the ideal width, because the reader
then needs to use the muscles of the eye and neck to track from
the end of one line to the beginning of the next line. If the
eye must traverse great distances on the page, the reader is
easily lost and must hunt for the beginning of the next line.
Quantitative studies show that moderate line lengths
significantly increase the legibility of text.
--

I also found a great article[1] on this subject.

Now... The site is solid. It functions as expected in my
chosen browser and is handled with your usual level of pro-
fessionalism. I think your client will be happy with it as is,
but it could only do better if it had a bit more color or
perhaps some collaged photographs, etc...

Cheers,
Stephen

LOL

Although you're messing with an unusual color scheme (and very different
from your usual design output), I kind of like it...it's definitely
different than what a first-time user would expect. Only thing I'd
change would be the text content header from the yellow to the
maroon...the yellow (or orange, whatever you prefer) isn't very easy to
read on a white background, at least for me. Might end up using some
other design element to pull the yellow back in if you change the text.

[wdvltalk] Why does this overlap? (...or Why Does IE suck?)

2004-01-22 Thread J.R. Pitts
on http://gojohnniego.com/endorsements.asp

On some widths in IE, words on the right side of the center (main) content
column will overlap into the td cell next to it. You can see this by slowing
reducing the width of your viewing window.

I've tried fixing this with various margin settings, but it always seems to
happen. I've even wrapped it up in a margined DIV.

This doesn't happen in Opera.

My next is to add a blank td in, but I'd like to know WHY this happens, as
I've run into it before.

Thanks.

2004-01-22 Thread Trusz, Andrew
One problem you have is the use of the xml prolog. This causes IE6 to act in
quirks mode (making it like IE5.5). Remove that and see what happens.

I'd suggest a review of the standards for the use of tables:
http://www.w3.org/TR/CSS21/tables.html

Validator says there are a number of xhtml errors. Those need to be fixed as
well before why can be solved.

Actually, if you want to use the table for layout, change the doctype to
just html not xhtml. You might even validate then. This is not a layout
which calls for a table so you're just complicating things by using xhtml.
Misuse css for style only and some of your problems will probably just
resolve themselves.

2004-01-22 Thread Howard Cheng
Sorry about the double post -- I'd forgotten that my list settings were to
not receive my own messages and I was sitting here going, what's wrong with
the list?? :)

Anyway, I realize that the following statement works, but it's really kind
of a kludge and I was hoping for something better:

SELECT um.userMovieID, um.userID, um.movieEditionID,
(SELECT TOP 1 borrower_userID FROM MovieCheckouts mc1 WHERE
mc1.userMovieID=um.userMovieID ORDER BY dateCheckedOut DESC) AS
borrower_userID,
(SELECT TOP 1 dateCheckedOut FROM MovieCheckouts mc1 WHERE
mc1.userMovieID=um.userMovieID ORDER BY dateCheckedOut DESC) AS dateCheckedOut,
(SELECT TOP 1 dateCheckedIn FROM MovieCheckouts mc1 WHERE
mc1.userMovieID=um.userMovieID ORDER BY dateCheckedOut DESC) AS dateCheckedIn
FROM UsersMovies um
WHERE um.movieEditionID IN ([id list])

That's awfully unwieldy. Anyone got a better way? Thanks.

[wdvltalk] RE: Home network Public address.

2004-01-22 Thread Cheryl D. Wise
You have to use the router utility to find out what the ip address of the
router is. You will also need to figure out port forwarding (check your
router documentation) to forward requests to that ip address to your
computers internal network address.

Better yet, upload the files to your webserver send you friend the url and
let him download it from there. Once he's downloaded it delete it from your
webserver. (Don't link the file to any pages on your website so nobody else
will stumble on them while they are there.)

Your router will have to be configured to allow outside

[wdvltalk] Re: [SQL] Tricky join

2004-01-22 Thread rudy
 Any ideas? Thanks.

you sure that's sql server, not access?

when did sql server start using autoincrement? isn't it identity?

as far as the syntax is concerned, i can see what you're trying to do in the
subquery, you've got um as a correlation variable in there, and yet you
are trying to do a join to the same subquery as a derived table

i'm not sure i can explain it, but that won't work

try it like this --

select um.userMovieID, um.userID, um.movieID
 , mc.borrower_userID, mc.dateCheckedOut, mc.dateCheckedIn
  from UsersMovies um
left outer
  join MovieCheckouts mc
on um.userMovieID
 = mc.userMovieID
   and mc.dateCheckedOut
 = ( select max(dateCheckedOut)
   from MovieCheckouts
  where userMovieID = mc.userMovieID )
where um.movieID IN ([id list goes here])

that uses a correlated subquery too, but what this one does is group the
movies in the mc table by userMovieID, and take the latest, and use that as
the row to get in the left outer join

not sure i can explain that, either

let me know if it works

You're right, but I always create the tables in SQL Enterprise Manager so
I'd forgotten the syntax. :)

Yeah, I can see why it doesn't work -- the um alias hasn't been
established at the time of the subquery, or something like that.

try it like this --

select um.userMovieID, um.userID, um.movieID
 , mc.borrower_userID, mc.dateCheckedOut, mc.dateCheckedIn
  from UsersMovies um
left outer
  join MovieCheckouts mc
on um.userMovieID

Not sure I can explain it either, but I understand what the concept. (: It
seems to work fine, but then again I only have one record in the database
now as I'm still early in development, so we'll see, but the logic behind
it is impeccable.

As always, thanks a ton.

had
the first wordprocessing software that did HTML. Please correct me if
I'm
wrong but isn't XML just a subset of SGML? A decaf version (XML)

 expresso (SGML)?

I hope the Patent Office says no. As they're just using something
that
 already exists.

It's been described as a subset by some, as it is based on it in some
ways but requires different tools to implement. XML is like a cross
between SGML and HTML. It has the flexibility developers need to define
types of content and how they are related while being less complex than
full-blown SGML. Since for all practical purposes it encompasses HTML,
existing Web content can remain as it currently stands. Because it has
most of the power of SGML, a single tagged text document could
conceivably drive not only display of Web sites, but production of paper
documents.
Here's an old conversation about subset:
http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/w3c-sgml-wg/1996Nov/0058.html
I just happen to be redoing a site for someone that was involved with
this as far back as '92,
http://markgroen.com/sagebrush/archives/index.htm
but the history actually starts about 1986 and earlier if you include
it's development:
http://www.sgmlsource.com/history/roots.htm

I haven't read the patent application myself, but suspect they are
actually just trying to patent a certain process they are doing with
their Word/Office documents, actually using xml or sgml is like using
javascript in that anyone can write code for it. On the other hand, we
are talking about M$ here eh, so I could be completely wrong.

hth!

[wdvltalk] Re: MySql front won't select - 2nd time

2004-01-22 Thread Joseph, Smile Poet
Rudy,

  SELECT*FROM test WHERE 1=orange;
(after much sweat) this appears to be acceptable syntax.

hey, did you not like my poem?

Just shows what MySql does to one - can you refresh my memory on this.

i suspect you want the 1 to refer to the first column

you can do this only in the ORDER BY clause

in the WHERE, each item is interpreted as a literal or column

you have two literals there, a numeric 1 and a string orange

there's no way in hell that 1 will ever equal orange

what are the two column names in your table?

Would you believe I sent this at 13.54 and it only returned to me (and
presumably reached the list) at 19.18.After a lot of swearing and
making dents in the desk with my head in the intervening hours it
occurred to me that numbers (oops, integers) might not be a good idea
for column headings. The program picks up some things are wrong -
though it give no answers - but this it didn't challenge; just didn't
do anything with it.

So you are spot on, I changed 1,2 to one, twop (nobody says I'm a good
typist) and it worked.

I have also been fooled by the difficulty in getting MySql Front to
show things have happened. The refresh button does not always do it
on one click. DB Manager is only a little better. So I have now
made a giant leap for me, and a very tiny step for mankind. (which
could still be better than the Mars probe)

Thanks Rudy,

Joseph

.. my IP address by ipconfig, it
 192.168.2.102 without public address.

That's the address assigned for your computer/router, if not correct
check the documentation. If you can connect to your web server, Cheryl's
idea sounds best as routers are tricky things if you don't know what you
are doing and it will only take seconds for sniffers out on the net to
know you are open and exploit you and then you will be sad. There's lots
of ways to get your ip address the other way around, put a link on your
desktop to www.ipchicken.com is one way.

Then phone your friend and tell him what it is along with the password
to your router (you did read the part about changing the default
password on your router right?).

Simply zipping up the files with a password and ftp'ing is fast, and
he/she will then be able to get the files whenever they want them
without worrying about whether or not you're up and running and that
gives you time to read your router documentation a bit more.

hth...
