RE: [wdvltalk] Directories

2006-09-19 Thread Cheryl D Wise
Want to see the code, take a look http://expressiondesigns.com that's my
site for testing EWD stuff for the book and class. That uses one of the
templates that ship with it with little more than the images changed. I
can't remember if I changed the characterset or left it at the default
utf-8.If I left it at utf-8 the stylesheet won't validate because the CSS
validator chokes on the BOM marks but if you past the css in the validator
to get past the BOM in the XHTML file (the HTML validator has no problem
with it other than a warning that some old browsers don't support it) then
it is valid. I think I added 3-4 classes that I normally use (floats and
clearing classes for those floats) but otherwise it is straight out of the
box.

I wouldn't worry too much about some of the newbies after all the owner of
http://actionsnacks.com has already decided that it is way to complicated
for her (warning there is sound onload if you go look at that site.) Pricing
is not yet known but the other web editor MS is releasing for the SharePoint
market (no SharePoint authoring tool thank god). The announced price for
that is $299 or $159 if they have a qualifying product.

While you can write a css zen garden with it you do still need to understand
CSS and browser to do a good job and while the templates are better than
anything Microsoft has done people will need customization and I expect
there are quite a few people who would still be interested in services like
those of http://xhtmlized.com/ because from what I've been seeing a lot of
FrontPage users want hand holding with CSS while they learn. If they want to
learn that is, not all do and I suspect there are quite a few who would be
happy to have their sites converted with a dwt provided.

MM-DW list on Yahoo which I moderate as well as the frontpage list on Yahoo.
I am spending a fair amount of time over on the Microsoft Expression Public
newsgroup since I am in the process of writing a book on the new MS editor
Expression Web (I owe a few beers over at Microsoft because they managed to
do a few things I would never have though to see in an MS web program -aka
standards complaint out of the box (XHTML Transitional/CSS 2) that you could
actually write a CSS Zen Garden layout without ever touching the code
directly. I'm not saying that it would be a wonderful design but it would be
design and standards compliant (the person I owe the beer to is a programmer
- enough said.)

I still subscribe to css-d but don't have much time for actually reading it.
I tend to skim the subjects and dump wholesale.

I own a small expression web designer mail list over on google groups as
well.

Thanks David. Guess I just wasn't too observant. I tend to ignore all the
stuff at the bottom of the email.

And yes, it's been very quiet. I'm guessing that people have identified

I joined WiseWomen and CSS-D, both of which generate email at an amazing
rate and are tough to keep up with but are good in terms of answers for
their specific focus.

Does anyone else have lists that they rely on?

Hey guys,

I used the list heavily in the 90s and up to a couple years ago, but now I'm in
politics so my designing and programming days are regrettably pretty much over.
I do lurk in the background just for old time's sake.

Arrr me beauty, tis not I that did the deed, here's a little
history

behind wdvl:

The project started as a hotlist on a NASA computer in late
1993, and
was moved to Charm Net in 1994. It became part of The WWW
Virtual

Library (originally at CERN) in September 1994. The CyberWeb was
announced in What's New, October 16, 1994 (528 Kbytes). The
Stars.com
domain name was granted on December 22nd 1994. The WDVL was
founded at
about the same time as the W3C - mid 1994. It's the oldest
commercial
web developer resource (supported by ads). It was the web's
first

comprehensive web developer resource.

I disagree here. I refuse to submit to DMOZ anymore. There really
isn't a reason to and you'll find if you hop on over to
www.highrankings.com Jill Whalen's boards and do some hunting you'll
find the reasons for not submitting to DMOZ. Even Jill herself says
not to bother and I do believe in one or more of the posts she may
even mention that it can be a detriment to the site.

One of my own top reasons is that about 8most ago or so I found out
that Google uses DMOZ in some fashion. Well, I wound up having a
very very very old DMOZ entry "stuck" in my description results after
a search for eons. Couldn't figure out where it was coming from as
it wasn't coming from my site. This one little thing affected my
rankings and try to get someone at DMOZ to change anything? Don't
hold your breath. I'm sure all the people who volunteer there are
very nice but they're also very overworked as DMOZ is all manual
labor. They just can't keep up for one thing. So, my advice is to
check out Jill's boards and do a double think before submitting there.

RE: [wdvltalk] Directories

2006-09-19 Thread Ann Dietz
Oookkkaaa -- I think I figured this out. I just saw a post elsewhere
that says it's "Talk Like a Pirate" day. That must explain some of this. I
have flitted past the sitepoint website and actually looked at a couple of
the tutorials but have not browsed the forums.

I shall take a look -- have fun with the pirate stuff, mate.

RE: [wdvltalk] Directories

2006-09-19 Thread Ann Dietz
Thanks David. Guess I just wasn't too observant. I tend to ignore all the
stuff at the bottom of the email.

And yes, it's been very quiet. I'm guessing that people have identified
/joined some other lists that are answering their questions.

I joined WiseWomen and CSS-D, both of which generate email at an amazing
rate and are tough to keep up with but are good in terms of answers for
their specific focus.

Does anyone else have lists that they rely on?

Ann

Interesting forum, Mark. Did you set that up? Was there another email
about it that I missed? Or has it always been there and I just didn't know
about it?

Er... it's just the web interface to the list... it allows you to read
posts through the web interface if that floats your boat, and also
change your subscription settings.

It's been there for quiet a long time, and is linked to in the footer
appended to every list mail:

" To change subscription settings, add a password or view the web interface:
http://intm-dl.sparklist.com/read/?forum=wdvltalk "

:)

And yes, this list has been very, very quiet lately... I think Rudy
might be right, there's no websites left to do :)

Cheers
