Thanks Deb. I think we need to put the email addresses on the site, but
perhaps not in mailto:; tags. Is that what the bots look at when scanning?

I can't say for sure what they specifically look
for but if you feel strongly about putting the
email on the sites, then I don't understand why
the original question? I thought you asked for
opinions and info about putting them on or not?
Maybe I misunderstood. It's been a very long UN

probably just didn't get what you asked and jumped in w/a dumb response. Sorry!

Todd:

If it's your client who wants to put the address on the site then it
might be an idea to go over the risks with them and suggest the PHP
contact form. If it's you who wants to put it on (and we can't talk you
out of it lol) then you could try populating a clickable mail link using
a PHP script - not sure bots can get at it then.

To answer your direct question, I'm not sure how spambots scan for mail
links, but I had a few addresses written purely as inline text (no link)
and never really got hit with spam.

RE: [wdvltalk] Email addresses on websites

2007-05-17 Thread Todd Richards
The original question - properly re-phrased - would have been more towards
coding the email address links - whether to use a script to encrypt them,
or not to program them in a link at all. I don't see how you can't have an
email address on a website. OK, I see how you can do it, but that's a very
frustrating thing when I go to a site is not being able to find a way to
email them. I just wasn't sure what the best practice is, and whether the
bots scan for the mailto tags, or the actual content on the page.

Sorry for the confusion - hope the day gets better! :)

Thanks Ross. This is an interesting article:
http://accessfp.net/protect-your-email-address.htm

I tested one of my pages without the mailto: link and it still found the
address on the page. Here is a way to test a page:
http://willmaster.com/possibilities/demo/RetrieveEmails.cgi

So I guess that answered my question! Sucks that we even have to worry
about this!

That's what contact forms are for. g My
experience is that the Mom'n'Pop - homemade sites
who don't use a real designer use email
addys. Professional sites use forms. But that's
just my experience. I hope the day gets better too - but it ain't!

I'm using a javascript method that I think someone on this list (was it
Rudy?) recommended a long time ago. View the source at

http://www.shefen.com

If you have javascript on you see a normal mailto link, with javascript
off you get webdev05 [at] shefen [dot] com.

It passes the willmaster.com test. Also the address I'm using is
webdev05 where 05 means I created it and put it online in 2005. At the
time I figured I would need to periodically create new addresses but so
far so good. The only spam I get is from real people trying to sell me
their services or ask for link exchanges, nothing automated.
