If it's your client who wants to put the address on the site then it might be an idea to go over the risks with them and suggest the PHP contact form. If it's you who wants to put it on (and we can't talk you out of it lol) then you could try populating a clickable mail link using a PHP script - not sure bots can get at it then.

To answer your direct question, I'm not sure how spambots scan for mail links, but I had a few addresses written purely as inline text (no link) and never really got hit with spam.
