Re: [wdvltalk] [Bulk] Creating a list of entries to submit in a form

2008-08-15 Thread Ross Clutterbuck
Thanks for the comments Tim.

With a fresh pair of eyes this morning I quickly looked up the
Javascript methods for boxes and had a play with selecting
all list items through code before submitting the form. Functionally
it works fine for my purposes (and budget) so I'm happy with this for
now, but I'm planning on playing with a more elegant and pretty
solution once this job's out of the way.

Thanks to all!

Thanks Dave

I do like the radio button idea. I'll run both approaches past the
client to see what they'd find more intuitive. If we end up sticking
with the 3 list approach, can you make selections via Javascript?

Re-reading your message, I see you need each unit to be either not part
of the course being edited, mandatory, or optional.

You could use radio buttons, and list the units like:

http://www.preshweb.co.uk/misc/rossdemo.html

That way, all units are listed, there's no need for Javascript to be
enabled, and it's clear and simple how to operate it. It should also be
easy to act on the data when it's submitted to the backend :)

Would that work for you?

I'd say there's going to need to be some Javascript involved. As you're
presumably going to be relying on Javascript already to move items
around the interface, using a bit more probably isn't a problem :)

Could you perhaps re-think it in a simpler way, and just have a set of
checkboxes to select the units which should be mandatory for the course
in question? That would remove the requirement for Javascript and
unfamiliar UI tools immediately. (Facilities to move list items from
one section to another are reasonably common, and most users shouldn't
stumble on them for long, but checkboxes are a hell of a lot more
common, and most users just instinctively know what to do).
