You have limited control, on our lists it is text based ads at the bottom of each email but not images, not html. By setting the list to classic format and no html you get unobtrusive stuff most ignore. Our Dreamweaver group has something like 5600-5800 members so it works for us. RE: [wdvltalk] WDVLTalk list closing NOT
Cheryl, Yahoo groups is a mail list with a web interface that people can choose to access if they want. It is not a forum in the same sense we are discussing. I own/moderate several Yahoo and Google Groups. That is why they are called groups not forums. What Ruby was talking about are forums with email notification of posts in thread/topics you subscribe to. Most of which also have RSS feeds that act in a similar one way manner. Not ones you post to via email. Re: [wdvltalk] WDVLTalk list closing NOT
Well, I guess I may as well add my tuppence worth - before the banks lose all my money!! I'm with those that want to maintain a mailing list. I've found this list extremely useful - I've been able to follow threads about things I haven't been involved in but they have been useful to my learning process. I agree the list would probably die if it became a forum. Seems we're voting for the name of the new list that David has said he'll host. WDAG seemed OK until it was pointed out two other groups use it! We could get all sorts of irrelevant postings turning up! Given we produce Web Sites, how about Site Technical Advice Group? (STAG) Web information Group? (WIG) There's always WAG (Web Advice Group) but the footballers wives might stamp their Jimmy Choos at that one! LOL. I echo the thanks to Linda for her help - Not sure how many years I've been on here - must be approaching seven or eight I guess - but throughout she's been a great moderator. Are you safe at Jupiter Linda - or does the end of this list indicate worse things are happening? Good Luck to all and keep me on any new list please - though I will alter the e-mail name a little when that starts up. On 2009/03/05 10:02 (GMT-0500) r937 composed: > i've been on multiple forums for between 7 and 9 years, and forums are more > member-friendly than mailing lists I frequent only one web forum, and that only because there is no alternative in existence. The many web forums I have visited are among the most unfriendly web sites in existence. Almost without exception they size text in px or pt, and in tiny or smaller sizes, in columns that produce much too long line lengths. The few that don't use px or pt text sizing invariably size content text at .76em or smaller, usually much smaller. Usually all input and textarea boxes are too short and/or too narrow for comfortable composition, if not normally at least after zooming the requisite 3-4 times to get big enough text. Both Usenet and mailing lists are far superior to all forums I've visited. Setting up a mailing list on Google & Yahoo Groups is free. Both forum and mailing list could be set up, and the mods could compare to see which is actually more popular for this membership. -- "The plans of the diligent lead to profit as surely as haste leads to poverty." This is a quiet community; I'm not going to be checking a forum every day or two to see if there's any new messages; if and when there are, I want them delivered to me. I suspect many other members will likely feel the same way. If we moved to a forum, lots of questions that would have been answered quite promptly on the list would never be answered (or would be answered so late as to make the answers unlikely to help any more) simply because people won't see the question. I've been on (and am still a member of) various forums, and also an a member of various mailing lists) - I find mailing lists infinitely more useful. Forums have their uses, but I really don't think one would be suited to this community. This isn't a high-volume list, it's not like you get flooded with mail, and any half-decent email client can filter mail however you want. Hi Linda, Whilst the fact that WDVLTalk may continue is excellent, the thought of this list moving to forums fills me with dread. One of the main reasons I stay subscribed to WDVLTalk is because the messages come into my inbox, I don't have to fire up my browser and visit a particular site in order to search for a thread that I once posted on, everything is in my email client and fully searchable. Everyone checks their email every day, if the list moved to a forum, I think that the list would die out as we don't all have time to check the forums. I don't know if I'm on my own here, however if the list is to be moved to a forum, could internet.com at least consider a setup such as Nabble or mail2phpbb so that those of us who have a dislike of forums can still interact using email? Does this mean keeping a mailing list, or replacing it with a web-based forum? To be totally honest, I'm not sure that a forum will really work out for a community which often has long periods of silence; people won't keep checking a forum in the hope that there might have been a post. Operating as a mailing list rather than a forum seems a better fit for the community, in my opinion at least. If it's solely an issue of cost, I'd be happy to host the list for you on my mailman install; you could point lists.wdvl.com there if you wanted to, and I'd be happy to help with moderation too if it would help?
