[weewx-user] WeeWX Shortcut to open in "Windowned" Browser APP mode (w/o browser menus)

2021-06-14 Thread Xant

This option might be trivial to some, but feature was removed from Chrome…
and now reinstated.

   1. Chrome - Add & open Chrome apps - Chrome Web Store Help
   <https://support.google.com/chrome_webstore/answer/3060053?hl=en>

   - Open Chrome.
   - Navigate to the website you want to add as an app.
   - At the top right, click More! (the 3 vertical dots on top right).
   - Click >More Tools.
   - Click >Create shortcut.
   - Tick-on >Open as window.
   - Enter a name for the shortcut and click >Create.

A shortcut will be created at desktop. Open, verify shortcut created as:
[path.EXE] --app=http://[url or IP]
or as example:
“C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe”
--app=http://192.168.1.128/

   1.

   Vivaldi
Although based on Chrome, Vivaldi (weird enough) does not provide the
options listed above. BUT, you can manually create a similar shortcut using
   the “–app” command.
   2.

   Firefox
Think this option was available in Firefox before, but now require user
to switch feature on. The following are the steps (although, I’m having
difficulties myself using latest Firefox version).
Firefox Nightly now supports Installing Websites as Apps [App mode]

[weewx-user] Sometimes, it's just a bad "piece of Pi" (a debug note to Noobies...)

2021-01-07 Thread Xant
ALL

For a while, started getting the dreadful "skips" in WeeWX Graphs. Sure,
and apologies to Tom & others, that I gave WeeWX the "usual suspects"
eyes...

Tried to ignore at 1st, but later showed to be prominent and consistent, to
the extend that my RPi4 could not even hold a SSH/Putty connection for long
without rebooting itself...

Googling "RPi Crash/Reboot" will mostly only say that 99% its the power
supply or USB cord to blame. Thus I switched both, many ways, and still
same...

Maybe it's "software/OS" related: Burned an older, and "formerly stable"
WeeWX, and still same...

Maybe it's "hardware": Changed RPi4 to a different, but similar and newer,
RPi4, and still same

Thus: good SD card (not the "cheapo"), good RPi4, good power supply & USB
cable..., and still same...

Next... debugging strategies (which may be obvious to some, but took me
longer in the learning process, and I post in case of guidance to others).
In summary:

1) Keep a steady SSH connection from computer to RPi... and see if it
maintains, or reboot/shutdown
2) Power supply/USB cable? (99%)
3) "# service --status-all"... What is running?!
4) Any extra interface, or mount?
5) Reboot RPi, stop installed services one-by-one
6) Stop unnecessary RPi/Raspian services (if headless, no need for
X-Desktop, video, sound, blutooth, etc)

In my case, not necessary in the above order, but by command "# service
--status-all", it showed that I had 'Monit" still running.

Monit is a monitoring service that I tried long ago as to keep a Watchdog
upon WeeWX. Turned out, as it didn't accomplished what I was expecting,
thought that I had removed already but not. Then 'Monit' (after OS
updates) was the culprit... and now things back to normal after
purge/remove...

On the "Silver lining of things", I cleaned-up a LOT of Raspian extra
services that I didn't even knew it was running in the background or
actually using... (and so should you).

Xant

PS: this is a repost, as right after posting it, my DD-WRT router died;
thus, just to be fair as events been different and isolated, I deleted the
above post till be sure; now fixed RPi, DD-WRT, etc... and WeeWX running as
expected.

Re: [weewx-user] Re: Corrupted Memory card. Now I lost 6 months of data?

2021-01-04 Thread Xant

I recently also had a corrupted SD card. Tried many alternatives to recover
data, including trying to mount at a Linux machine (at no prevail).

The only (Windows) solution that actually worked was, where I was able to
read and retrieve data, was the freeware "DiskInternals Linux Reader":

[weewx-user] Re: FUN with Windows

2021-01-03 Thread Xant

To Vince et all

1st and foremost, wishing you a "possible 2021" (all considered).

You may have realized (or not), that I'm no longer posting to Weewx Forum
group for months (as my postings seems to get different perspective than
intended...).

I'm NOT in a "Medium blog person" (not even sure what "Medium" is), whom
doesn't even have a Facebook or Instagram account (whatever this "social
media" means...).

Per our Weewx Tom's founder posting, "Last, but definitely not least, A
fun, supportive Users' Group <http://groups.google.com/group/weewx-user>",
which I tried to support (as a token of recognition to our Weewx Founders
and supporting Group).

I APOLOGIZE to all Weewx group (as not wish to escalate..). But Vince, all
my contributions were in good will... and STOP been the "police" in this
forum (as it happens to me, it also happens to others; btw: you still owns
me, as I saved you in MQTT settings before).

There are indeed TWO Forums:

1) Users Group

2) Developers Group

Where each one must be address accordingly.

I had GREAT pleasure in participating in this Forum (as I may still
contribute at times), but Vince... please just be polite (or ignore posting
feedback... ).

2021, Xant

PS1: pls, no replies
PS2: u... after sooo many Months, 2021 indeed feels better...

[weewx-user] Re: VM rented as alternative to web hosting

2020-08-22 Thread Xant

My "in-house" solution, and considering you need a machine running all
time, is NAS.

QNAP allows Virtual Host, which allows to have multiple Domain Names into
separate "virtual hosts". Just have to keep-up with DynDNS, which in my
case, have not changed for years...

This kind of disruption is really unecessary to the Weewx Community...

2020-06-16 Thread Xant

Vince et al

Note taken:

   1. Windows not as popular, but posting highlighting new recent Windows
features, and further options for WeeWX users on this platform
   2. Not trying to diverge from anything other than WeeWX collaboration;
although, I acknowledge that Title may have lead to misunderstanding and
   purpose

As an active user and contributor to WeeWX cause, and as Home Automation
continues to evolve, I always try to connect systems and latest
developments... specially towards WeeWX.

I learned a lot from other WeeWX enthusiasts projects and feedback in
similar postings:

   - Fun w RPi
   (https://groups.google.com/d/msg/weewx-user/WV8f6mFNMF0/S_pWt5z3AwAJ); in
this posting learned about Home Assistant, and working on connection link
   to WeeWX
   - WeeWX and OpenSprinkler
   (https://groups.google.com/d/msg/weewx-user/qsJomP-2GJ8/8bSfz0UjAwAJ); in
this posting learned about multiple irrigation options, and link to WeeWX

Out-of-the-Box, all related to WeeWX..., making WeeWX User's group the
perfect forum to exchange personal projects and experiences.

Let's enjoy WeeWX User's Group... beyond a forum for bugs or a posting
place only for difficulties. Not trying to be a "Medium blog" (or other),
but a exchange for WeeWX Users to share projects, constructive ideas, and
common feedbacks.

2020-06-16 Thread Xant
Confirms that besides Rachio been top list from most "techy sites", the
RainMachine Owners feedback are most positive (it seems, specially for
WeeWX enthusiasts).

It's interesting to note that although "everything" is moving to Cloud,
RainMachine advertise of "cloudless" as an extra feature. At first, it seems
innocuous marketing, but indeed an interesting feature for those (like
WeeWX community), that look forward to more data control. In fact, the
company transition of Cyber-Rain, Cloud dependency and lack of further
development, it whats killing my original - and still hardware functioning
- irrigation control.

Mini- 8 EOL. Pro-8 was back-ordered, but now shipped (although pricey).

Connectivity note:

   - Cyber-Rain: WeeWX, HomeAssistant
   - Pro-8: the only model I could identify (among RainMachine and Rachio)
with both LAN wired and wireless capability

Although I now have to consider a wire through garage walls the direct
wired connection is of interest, since I suffered before with On/Off
frequent procedure to Cyber-Rain WiFi bridge.

Daniel et al

Per your note, recently found-out HomeAssistant (and keeping up at
night...).

As open-source, information is scattered, and sometimes dated with time
allowance, already setup some things, but still debating with MQTT.

Pat has some information before, but think that some have already changed
as well
(https://groups.google.com/d/msg/weewx-user/EI1mi1qrGA8/IuJlV_B3FQAJ).

Would appreciate feedback on how to setup Hass MQTT, which it seems not
provide much (graphical maybe) config options, to connect to generic and
WeeWX.

2020-06-13 Thread Xant

Mike

Agree. Greetings for those going DIY, but in this case will go turnkey as
well.

Per my recent research, Rachio tops most of reviews, but some complains
about Advertising inside own app to other company products. On the other
side, RainMachine owners feedback are most positive (like yourself). And...
extensive connectivity to HomeAssistant, WeeWX, among others, while
data remains local - "cloudless" (to note, the weewx link seems to be
written by HomeMachine own developers).

RainMachine Mini-8 ($159) announced End-Of-Life, leaving only their most
expensive options available. But still, I may go this route...

As an early adopter of HomeAutomation, I have my lawn serviced by
Cyber-Rain... really "high-tech" among my neighbors at that time, but the
original Company sold a couple year ago and sending "end-of-life" notices -
as their services, depends on their cloud Hosting services to function,
otherwise the lawn will fry...

So, what's going on with Cyber-Rain (http://www.cyber-rain.com), now Galcon.

1) Microsoft Silverlight
"Microsoft Silverlight is a deprecated application framework for writing
and running rich Internet applications, similar to Adobe Flash. A plugin
for Silverlight is still available for some browsers." As today, only IE
would support it.
The requirement of Silverlight, shows that NO further development was
performed towards Cyber-Rain application.

2) Cyber-Rain apps
Outdated, flawed...

There are MANY more tech difficulties just to have the Sprinkles to work...
but no need to mention... Cyber-Rain is gone, and I need a Replacement.
Unfortunately, another good hardware to go to pile... (and $).

Back to "options"... as I'm researching for Stable and Most connected
option...

A) OpenSprinkler
Its promising... based on RPi, but still into to early call. And don't want
to spent more $ to hardware that would have short live

B) "Any" Sprinkler
Current sided to Rachio 3e, for price and connectivity. with a close call
by RainMachine.

Feedbacks are welcome, towards WeeWX and HomeAssistant connectivity.

That said, there are recent developments and portability in Windows for
Linux, other than VM (as you previously posted), and wondering if feasible

[weewx-user] FUN with Windows

2020-06-08 Thread Xant

We are now witnessing a Windows transition... from a constrained Desktop
environment, to something more open, diverse, Development and Linux sided.
Where all that would go, I don't know, but its worth checking recent trends.

1) CMD, PowerShell & Windows Terminal
At first came CMD, the old trustful Command Prompt.
Then Windows PowerShell, which is a mix of CMD along with Linux commands.
And now, Windows Terminal...

https://www.techrepublic.com/article/windows-terminal-everything-you-need-to-know-now/

2) Windows VM vs WSL- Windows Subsystem for Linux
I'm an Advocate for RPi, but we must acknowledge that some (or even most),
not comfortable with an original Linux box
(https://groups.google.com/d/msg/weewx-user/GbgWO9QFIOI/DRQKYk88AAAJ).
2.1- VM
2.2- Windows Subsystem for Linux, which I just discovered and it seems
promising to someone trying to investigate Linux and WeeWX.

But there are debate, and some even mentioning Multipass
https://www.quora.com/Should-I-use-Linux-on-VM-or-in-Windows-Subsystem
if wasn't already confusing

2.3- Multipass (https://multipass.run/)

Indeed, there are options...

Wondering feedback from any path above.

The Modbus Energy Monitor seems very enticing as next RPi Project.

But as seen in snapshots your house power-panel seems much more "cleaner"
and high-tech than mine, which has the usual standard (and probably old)
power-switches/circuit-breaker and no "smart-meter".

That said, think my house may not be a "candidate" for Modbus Energy

2020-06-05 Thread Xant

Thank you all for your piece of Pi feedback. All interesting Projects, and
learning.

For one, Media stuff I still keeps in my NAS, and glad for this
configuration. Not just my QNAP provides good Plex and media library, but
also works great as Web Server with Multiple Virtual Hosts (WeeWX included).

This is important to note, that my QNAS setup allows Web Server hosting for
MULTIPLE Domains, even with a regular Residential IP... which I don't think
"easily" possible with RPi, or extended hack.

So, any Media stuff goes to NAS, other RPi's goes to RPis as possible...

And yes... my QNAS TS-253A even has a HDMI, which would allow direct
connection to TV for further "entertainment". But it is hard-drive noisy,
and now in the basement while performing Media network streaming.

Thanks to Daniel Rich for appoint Home Assistant (installed and learning).

And Luc Heijst, Modbus Energy Monitor might be next.

Thank you for prompt reply, as I wish u, family, and Baby all doing well.

1) I used to do a lot to tweaks upon WeeWX and Bskin... but now settle for
long as I finally got my WXsite as I wish. That is, stable for long, till
missing Chart behaviour started, at no other change...

2) As posted, WeeWX 4.1, Bskin 1.1

My WX Website: http://appnea.net/

Graphs section completely missing (while Grafana and DarkSky forecast plots
still shows up).

To note (if you would check my site above), it is NOT consistent...
sometimes HighCharts Graphs shows-up, sometimes not, while a "wee_reports"

[weewx-user] Re: FUN with RPi

2020-06-04 Thread Xant

Daniel

Thanks for your feedback, but think there is a misconception. Think that
RPi can handle much more load than you think. Underneath, is snapshot of my
RPi4, which runs:

   - WeeWX
   - Belchertown skin
   - MQTT (which I forgot to mention in original post)
   - Influx + Grafana
   - Nagios

To note, RPi4 takes all as a breeze, with much more room to spare (and
that's why looking for other "RPi projects" to investigate).

My RPi4 Grafana monitor dashboard:

As it can be notice, CPU usage is almost 'none', and can take more...

Similar to your posting, thought Influx/Grafana would be too much for RPi,
and tried install in the NAS first... Big mistake, too much trouble and
docker, while Influx/Grafana in the RPi is how its supposed to be.

The only reason I'm using Pi-hole in the RPi3 (which it was the one now to
spare), is that its now my main wholehouse DNS, and don't want to
reboot/shutdown at times.

Per your feedback:

   - Home-assistant - will investigate
   - Asterisk - though about it, but it is a PBX thing, not a VOIP; a PBX
is too much for home use, while I continue searching for a VOIP own hosting
option... if it ever exist; so far, I have Ooma
   - Stratum - will investigate
   - Conserver - will investigate
   - Flightaware - will investigate
   - Music Player - not for the Pi; have Plex on NAS

[weewx-user] Re: Hardware Recomendation for weewx Compatible Hardware

2020-06-03 Thread Xant
Tom K

Welcome to WeeWX, but also to note, that there are many previous posting
regarding this issue (which should check prior to new post).

Always debate regarding cost x performance, but the following is my take:

1) RPi as hosting hardware
Version 3 or 4 performs well, but for minor price diff, 4 is latest and
Python 3

2) WeatherFlow
For price x performance, I'm sided to WeatherFlow, which not just ping at
2.5secs timeframe, but also has NO moving parts, ambient light, UV index,
solar radiation. Sonic anemometer!

The previous model (which I have) has 2 sensor units. Which it's good, as
you can place the 2nd unit in shade for better temp measurement.

On Amazon, for $299.95 (which is 5cents under budget!) :P

To note, there is a newer model - Tempest $329. - not in Amazon yet and
back-ordered, but directly from WeatherFlow website:
https://shop.weatherflow.com/collections/frontpage/products/tempest

I don't know the comparison about the 2 in detail, but the new unit is
"all-in-one", while the older model it's split in two.

Funny as things goes previously, WeatherFlow was "proud" to market the
2 separate units as better measurement (as one could go to shade, instead
of direct sun radiation), while now they market the single unit as a great
feat (to cut costs for sure...).

Regardless, either one are great and can go no wrong.

[weewx-user] FUN with RPi

2020-06-03 Thread Xant

WeeWX works Great in both RPi3 w Python 2.7, or RPi4 w Python 3, or any
variant of that.

Although ported to many (thanks Tom), the RPi seems the perfect WeeWX host
due to low cost, OS portability, always on, flexibility, etc.

So... what can you do with your "piece of Pi"?

*1) WeeWX*
First-of-all indeed...

*2) Skin*
To honor ALL skin developers, and diversity IT's good.
Although, my skin of choice it's Bskin/Belchertown skin (thanks Pat) and
HighCharts are great.

*3) Influx & Grafana*
Here is where you can have a diff DB and Graphs, as the following (my
Grafana WeeWX; thanks to Matthew Wall:
https://github.com/matthewwall/weewx-influx).

http://appnea.net/grafana/

Bonus: once you have Influx/Grafana working, you can also have RPi
monitoring dashboard (https://grafana.com/grafana/dashboards/10578).

*4) Nagios*
WeeWX Nagios plugin:
http://lancet.mit.edu/mwall/projects/nagios/check_wview (again, thanks
Matthew Wall)

Extra info to install on RPi:

*Pi-hole*
Ad-blocker DNS server: https://pi-hole.net/
(it works great...)

Other RPi and NAS projects that "it doesn't work":

*Hosting Own eMail*
Tried locally, and also through VPS.
1- locally hosting (aka, residential IP) will cause email to be filtered as
Spam, and may not reach destination
2- hosting at VPS got in similar issues
So, eMail validation it's complex
(https://www.geekwire.com/2015/why-you-shouldnt-try-to-host-your-own-email/
;
https://medium.com/@stoyanov.veseline/self-hosting-a-mail-server-in-2019-6d29542dadd4)

and might be not worth it.

Let me know if any other WeeWX or projects accomplished on RPi.

[weewx-user] rPI SD Card - IMG backup, cloning, transfer to larger/smaller (Windows)

2020-05-05 Thread Xant

My experience with rPI SD cards. The following refers to Windows/PC with a
SD card slot or with a USB SD card reader/writer.

*1) Backup, Image or Cloning *- to equal or larger SD card

*Win32DiskImager* - https://sourceforge.net/projects/win32diskimager/

Win32DiskImager is the "to-go" option for rPI SD cards disk imaging, backup
or cloning. It creates a 'perfect' image as it copies 'bit-by-bit' data
clusters to an IMG file. Thus, it creates a file as big as the Card size
itself as it even 'copies empty cluster data'.

But bigger, not always better.
As SD storage size prices keeps following, its easy to get tempted to slide
a very large SD card into rPI, and I took this bait when upgrading to
rPI-4. I placed a 64Gb SD Card, but turned out that only used a small
fraction of the card storage (~7%, for WeeWx, MQTT, wx-database,
Belchertown skin, InfluxDB, Grafana, etc).
On the other side, it takes long to Backup and creates very large IMG files.

Thus, Win32DiskImager can transfer IMG to same or larger SD card, where the
extra space would be "unallocated" and needs to be expanded (raspi-config).

*2) Transfer to Smaller SD Card*

Transfer to a Smaller SD Card is possible and there are different
approaches pending OS, Software or more than 1 SD card slot.
The easiest (and free) way I found was through '*Paragon Backup & Recovery*'
Paragon creates a 'recovery-point file' that saves only the actual data
from SD card that can be transferred back to "any size" SD card,
same/smaller/larger (data usage considered).

This worked perfect in my case, and now have a better size-fit SD card
running on rPI=4 for WeeWX.

For those that still keeps the original path, the following is my update

1) Backup

if the case)
# tar zxvf [weewx-xxx.tar.gz]

home = /etc/weewx
prefix =
exec-prefix =
install_lib = /usr/share/weewx
install_scripts = /usr/share/weewx

# ./setup.py build
# ./setup.py install

- copy old files from backup, if necessary (as weewx.conf, extensions.py,
or other)
# cp extensions.py - to - /usr/share/weewx/user
# cp [driver].py* - to - /usr/share/weewx/user

Not just a matter of wording. Pat, as a Developer, have to consider
new-users when starting using Belchertown. So API and Service has always to
be current, and open to new sign-ins.

Not really (as pointed by someone before), "end of 2021" refers to owners
of existing APIs, but widget service soon to be cancelled and DarkSky
closed to new APIs.

So the search and research for a replacement is On...

[weewx-user] Re: A monitor program for WeeWx running on Raspberry Pi

2020-04-25 Thread Xant

I still recommend WeatherCloud "trick", and all should use, regardless...

But this posting caught my attention for a real monitoring... so, I went to
research.

So, here is my current status:

   - Script using 'Initial State' (no longer free as mentioned in original
posting); also, might be dated as I went through errors

   - rPi monitoring w Grafana; this seems interesting, as I'm already using
Grafana for my Weewx/PWS; Grafana does have nice Graphics; but too much
work now, may investigate further later on
   (https://grafana.com/grafana/dashboards/10578)
   - Monit, as mentioned by Wes Witt (thank you); yes, it seems "easy" to
implement, and the following is a "rPi HowTo"; I got running (although
setup for Weewx not finished), but also got instabilities as cutting off my
Putty/SSH connection; that said, its a major for me, and I will not
   investigate further
  -

https://www.domoticz.com/wiki/Monitoring_domoticz#Configuring_monitoring_of_programs
   - John Burricelli script (thank you) - always like "simplicity" - seems
something to look forward, and will investigate

Chris

Here is my "UN-scientific" and not proven advice (follow with care);

1) Backup SD card - as it seems you already done, or just get a brand new
SD card (to be extra safe and troublesome)
2) Copy Weewx directories/folders, to PC or other - formerly Weewx
directories (may vary):
- /etc/weewx
- /usr/share/weewx
- /var/lib/weewx
3) Upgrade card, and copy Weewx directories/folders back on.

If all goes well, it should work.

Yes, you can always check if Weewx is running by regular rPi "status"
command prompt, but is not a "monitoring" thing per say.

A nifty trick - which almost work as a "monitoring" - is to upload your wx
data to WeatherCloud,

WeatherCloud will notify you by email, if stop receiving your data... for
weewx, rPi, network, or whatever would be. But you get notified to check on
what is wrong...

It saved me many times already...

[weewx-user] WeatherUnderground, WunderStation vs PWS

WU continue departure from its original foundation and purspose, where used
to be a hub for PWSs.

After transition, WU seems stagnant for years no further development,
but killing feature and feature (API, weather webcam, etc), which make us
"wunder" what is it's purpose now.

Might be a while, but just came to my attention that WU recently also
killed WunderStation, which used to be a nice iPad only app specific for
PWS monitoring.

WU still list WunderStation on their website, but no longer available in
the Apple Store.

https://www.wunderground.com/wunderstation

If you used to have the app on your iPad, now it pops-up "retired" msg.

Thanks to have WeeWX... a truly independent WX app for the PWS community.

As posted 'OWM "triggers" (which OWM calls "alerts")'. Thus, it's

Still, better than complete removal of weather flag as PWS owner can adjust

Re: [weewx-user] Re: Changes with Belchertown skin & DarkSky

2020-04-12 Thread Xant

Thinking forward, it can be more than an "replacement" to DarkSky alerts...
it can be "an evolution"!

The owner of PWS anywhere in the World already knows the weather pattern
more than anybody else... so, with OWM triggers, one would make their
weather conditions to send alerts, not depending of ANY global weather
agency or their pattern... one would create their own... independent,
anywhere/globally.

Also as posted, in the near future OWM will even implement send push
notifications (and WeeWX/Belchertown will be ready).

It hurts to see alerts to go... the above can be the next step, evolution.

Ok... so, what about OWM "triggers" (which OWM calls "alerts"), and its
also available to all services - free, included.

We invite you to try our new product - the weather alerts which are based
on our meteorological data.
Now you can use simple syntax and a few API methods to create triggers
which will fire on an occurrence of the selected weather conditions
(temperature, humidity, pressure, etc.) in a specified period of time
If the trigger's conditions are met, our service will generate an alert. In
order to receive this alert you need to poll the service with the specified
time interval. We plan to add push notifications and new data sources to
this product's functionality in the nearest future.

Available for both Free and paid subscriptions

Which has a link to "https://alerts.weather.gov;.

So, it seems that alerts coming from Weather.gov, not DarkSky itself. Is
DarkSky the "trigger" or else? Moving to OWM would still be able to get
alerts for weather.gov?

Sure OWM still a respectful service. I will not "kick the dead body"

above, but as YR offers much more real data at no restrictions, API, or

Pat, as you said: "Another appeal for yr.no in my reading is that for yr.no

Dark Sky API

William: "That's true if one already has a DarkSky API key"
U... apologies as I missed this important "detail", as to say let's go
till end-of-2021. Just trying to give all some peace of mind and let the
industry to settle.
But it is true. DarkSky cutting the cord... let's continue research.

YR.no API

Still have my vote for Belchertown API

   - Not commercially owned (NRK, Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation and
   Norwegian Meteorological Institute)
   - long time providing Global data (not just Norwegian); many reports US
   weather data to be accurate
   - metric system data only, but don't see this much of an issue; as
posted by Pat, "more work upfront, but the skin can convert units"
   - G Hammer: "A new Yr API is on the way!"; don't expect new Yr API to
provide anything other than metric, as its own website doesn't have
   conversion option either
   - Free... no restrictions, plenty of accurate Global data
   - Pat: "Another appeal for yr.no in my reading is that for yr.no is no
API key is needed, no developer account - "it just works".
   - Yr.no let embed in many ways (Java, PHP, XML); even provides nice
   3days Meteogram (metrics only,
   though);
https://www.yr.no/place/United_States/Massachusetts/Belchertown/data.html

[image: Screenshot_2020-04-03 Yr - varsel eksternt.png]

YR no Alerts

Alerts indeed a great feature of DarkSky API, and thanks to Pat for
providing in Belchertown. Although YR.no provides plenty of wx info, it
seems indeed that it doesn't provides alerts.
Considering that YR still my pick (besides no alerts), and current lack of
consolidated API source, proposing a (temporary) hybrid solution as NOAA
does provides weather alerts for US through API or CAP (CAP is an XML-based
information standard used to facilitate emergency information sharing and
data exchange); https://www.weather.gov/documentation/services-web-alerts

[weewx-user] Re: Changes with Belchertown skin & DarkSky

2020-04-02 Thread Xant

I always honor Tom, Pat and Matthew Wall time and work towards WeeWX
endeavour.

DarkSky has been a good resource and nice graphics. Now sold ("Good for
them, Bad for everybody else").

There are alternatives. And as Pat correctly pointed out, the "replacement"
needs to be of Global perspective (I guess this eliminates some of the
obvious "gov" choices).

   - OpenWeather: a good possible alternative, but besides the catchy name,
is not much that "open" (and charge for some); it might suffice for usual
WeeWX applications, but it makes me uncomfortable to have constraints
regarding data access, and future developments
   (https://openweathermap.org/price)
   - YR.no: considering Global perspective, still my pick... completely
   free, excellent service and reliable

But an extra note... let's NOT get too crazy about this right now... the
DarkSky API still goes aaalll the way towards end-of-2021. We ALL have MUCH
to think nowadays other than this (quarantine and all).

Pat said: "Maybe it's a good thing I haven't released 1.1 yet!".

If changing API is easily done (and you really really bored at home), then
do it.

Otherwise... Pat, you have a newborn, and the whole World (literally) at
stand still. Nobody (I mean nobody) now have a current "plan", and all is
on hold. End-of-2021 seems really really far considering WeeWX,
Belchertown and API perspective.

Let's move-on for now get some peace-of-mind and release 1.1 (as is
with current API), and let's talk back again on this sometime in 2021!

ClearSkies!

Excerpt regarding DarkSky free Weather API: "Our API service for existing
customers is not changing today, but we will no longer accept new signups.
The API will continue to function through the end of 2021."

Its sad, troublesome and concerning, as myself use DarkSky API for other
forecasts.

Quick list of 'almost free' Weather
APIs:
https://rapidapi.com/blog/access-global-weather-data-with-these-weather-apis/

Two really free, and consistent, Weather APIs:

   - NOAA: https://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/cdo-web/webservices/v2

Note: I may assume that using NOAA it is going direct to main weather data
source; also been ".gov" might be free for long

   - YR.no:

https://hjelp.yr.no/hc/en-us/articles/360001940793-Free-weather-data-service-from-Yr

Excerpt note from YR.no API webpage: "You can get a lot of the content on
Yr for free, to use for various applications and services. This is a unique
offer in Europe. In other countries weather data is highly valuable and
expensive."

Congrats Pat!

[weewx-user] Average WX local historical data to compare?

2020-03-26 Thread Xant

I'm in the UpstateNY, where weather behaviour indeed awkward (specially
recently) Mix of warm days, recent snow and freezing temps besides
clear sunny days.

Historically, what is the temp I was expected to see today? Under freezing,
above freezing, warm? Are the Seasons changing due to "Global Warming"?

In another words, is there average WX local historical data that can be
retrieved and compared and plotted to WeeWX graphs?

[weewx-user] Lookr, Windy, WeatherUnderground & Live WeatherCAM

2020-02-27 Thread Xant
In previous postings I mentioned about Lookr as a good option for Live
WeatherCAM posting and website server (after the WU "boohaha" turning down
weathercams, and later regretting on it). That said, Lookr.com used to be a
generic webcam hosting site (based in Europe, if not mistaken) to incentive
nice scenery and travel sites.

Well, just came to my attention (although don't know for how long that
happened), that it seems that Windy.com took over Lookr.com for live
WeatherCAMs!

That was wy under the radar, and as a (now) former Lookr.com user,
didn't notice even not been notified of this transition (either, can not
find any "news" on the web). So, typing "lookr.com" on web browser, takes
you to "windy.com webcams".

Although not been properly notified of this transition,* its a good thing
for us WX hobbits* (like us WeeWX) as now we have a "new" and free
WeatherCAM hosting site.

Take that WU!!! :P

Steve

Peter Quinn response was correct, but you didnt answer.

Is your camera capable of streaming without specific client?
Can you access your camera, image, video outside your network?

Most people doesn't not understand that most consumer webcameras are not
capable of direct streaming, but only higher end and more expensive cameras.

Please, verify my previous postings on this subject:

https://groups.google.com/d/msg/weewx-user/agX8XytOTkI/LhZa1Kj4AQAJ

Always research the Forum, prior to a new posting as already answered in

Re: [weewx-user] Re: weewx - weewx-influx - grafana

Forget about porting InfluxDB & Grafana in a NAS, if you have WeeWX in
RPi too much trouble to setup in a "Container".

I previously mentioned how to port InfluxDB & Grafana in QNAP... but now
installed and moved to RPi (database restarting)... and NOT without
difficulties. To note, usual or outdated directions does NOT work, so
follow the following;

RPi - Raspbian Buster

A) InfluxDB
% apt isntall influxdb
% systemctl unmask influxdb
% systemctl enable influxdb
% systemctl enable influxdb
% influx

Config file:
/etc/influxdb/influxdb.conf
Meta database file:
/var/lib/influxdb/meta/meta.db

http://[localhost/IP]:8086

https://pimylifeup.com/raspberry-pi-influxdb/

B) Grafana
% wget https://dl.grafana.com/oss/release/grafana_6.5.2_armhf.deb
% dpkg -i grafana_6.5.2_armhf.deb

Install msg:
### NOT starting on installation, please execute the following statements

% sudo /bin/systemctl daemon-reload

Package notes:
Installs binary to /usr/sbin/grafana-server
Installs Init.d script to /etc/init.d/grafana-server
Creates default file (environment vars) to /etc/default/grafana-server
Installs configuration file to /etc/grafana/grafana.ini
Installs systemd service (if systemd is available) name
grafana-server.service
The default configuration sets the log file at /var/log/grafana/grafana.log
The default configuration specifies an sqlite3 db at
/var/lib/grafana/grafana.db

Extra note: Anonymous access for Website Embed Grafana panel or dashboard

1) Anonymous access
Edit "defaults.ini" to allow anonymous access, no password and role as

If going Acurite route and replace a 5x1, the option is Acurite Atlas which
is a 5x1 + UV + Illuminance + Lightning (extra optional sensor), making it
a "8x1". But reporting time is slow (around 10sec if not mistaken). This
might be un-noticeable for regular use, but if using MQTT (with Belchertown
skin for example) it makes a difference.

WeatherFlow reports around 3sec, while Davis Instrument reports around
2.5secs (the shortest in the market).

I advocate for WF for the price point and features, but Davis still the
industry standard (for a price). Thus Vantage Vue for a cost conscious or
Vantage.

A most important point Greg!

Specially nowadays, when Open Source seems "old school", and glad to those
that still carries and supports this flag. Hope for continuing dev,
expanding adoption and application.

Besides proprietary, also thanks Highcharts for keeping free for
Non-commercial use approach.

[weewx-user] Re: weewx - weewx-influx - grafana

2019-12-04 Thread Xant
This posting is a "review" and sharing feedback regarding the Grafana
experience. Not intended to be an "in-depth" discussion, neither great
debate, just personal "pros and cons" for WeeWX.

For a start, to note that Grafana vs Highcharts might "bananas vs
apples" Grafana intended to IoT monitoring, while Highcharts for
generic plotting.

A) Pros of Grafana

   - WeeWX/InfluxDB driver by Matthew Wall (thanks!); ALL variables
   submitted with minimum config
   - enjoyed the experience and easy to play the Graphs (once you
figured-out; check my previous posting on this regard); but it does looks
   great
   - do your own WX Dashboard... to your liking (or almost)

B) Cons of Grafana

   - does not read directly from SQlite DB, but requires InfluxDB; to be
impartial, not difficult to install InfluxDB, but sure an extra step and
another DB; there are posting mentioning Grafana development for direct
SQlite DB... but that has been more than 2yo, and not sure if will ever
   come out
   - can not embed Grafana dashboard to webpage (no "iframe")... that's a
dagger if planning to embed to own WX webpage (unfortunately, it was one of
   my latest findings...)
   - no spline line option in graph (!), and no other smothering for
   plot... graphs looks "stiff"
   - Highcharts offers more options, and might be more up-to-date regarding
appearance and flexibility (that to say, Pat took the right path for Bskin)
   - besides research, could not make Node-Red or Telegraf (Influx plugin)
to properly MQTT; thus the dashboard is mostly static, with no real uptime
   (I gave up)

C) Extra comments

My system is Rpi3 (for WeeWX) + QNAP (for web hosting). Thus, the "natural"
path was to install InfluxDB/Grafana in the NAS system, which has more CPU
power, letting Rpi3 just for WeeWX load. What I learned, is that QNAP does
not directly support InfluxDB/Grafana, but through its own Container
system/docker (ie, a virtual inner platform). This was easy and works fine
for basic assessment. But as you dig further, it is much inconvenient.

Would I do it again (QNAP that is)?

Maybe not, but InfluxDB/Grafana on Rpi; would save much troubles on the way.

To note, Grafana offers free hosting on their cloud service. I have not
tried, but interesting to consider.

Bottom line, if interesting to learn further on IoT and monitoring... go
ahead. Otherwise, till direct SQlite interface, dashboard website embed,
and MQTT, may not be for general WX.

Re: [weewx-user] Re: Cloud services (wunderground etc.) worthwhile?

2019-12-04 Thread Xant
Agree!

In parallel to wind gust... wind direction. Sure, always "cool" to see that
your website and PWS are "alived". And now, to be true to the original
posting "is still worthwhile"?

I might had said "yes", when WU and rapidfire had their time, and it was
interesting to see it live... but WU evolved downhill, and now may say "no"
(with great disappointment).

On the other side, glad that WeeWX and personal PWS still moving strong,
and say "yes" to Belchertown skin and MQTT.

Bottom line, and for those not hosting own WX, yes for WX + rapidfire. But
for most of us WeeWX, while still uploading to WU, save resources and no
longer rapidfire.

(update)

At this point, I pretty much reproduced original Christian Dashboard. Once
you get the hand-of-it, things are much quicker to setup sensors.

Dashboard at this point is "static", and not real-time updated and
graphical response. Searching for MQTT solutions, or similar. InfluxDB has
a plugin called Telegraf, and Qnap also has its own IoT package. Will
investigate.

Important to note that Grafana may develop source link direct to SQlite DB
(although, this promise is more than 2yo). If so, would be no need for
InfluxDB and direct reading direct WeeWX DB.

[weewx-user] Re: weewx - weewx-influx - grafana

2019-12-03 Thread Xant
After some research, got InfluxDB and Grafana working on Qnap, and now my
1st Graph. So, I can certify that you can use your NAS, or other remote
system, for WeeWX purposes, without having to install all packages on Rpi.

Most things are straight forward, but most struggle to start with Grafana
as most Tutorials refers to older versions.

The following are some steps, which may reproduce steps posted above, but
as a summary:

1) Install InfluxDB and Grafana in Qnap

Per following instructions, install InfluxDB and Grafana through Qnap
ConstainerStation, with the exception that don't need to create Database
(weewx-influxdb driver would do it), neither deal with QIoT Suite Lite
(skip those steps):
https://qiot.qnap.com/blog/2018/12/12/install-influxdb-grafana-qnap-nas/

Note that will create Container port-forwarding Port# 8086, and Grafana
Port# 3000
Follow instructions for Grafana, but don't establish Database or create
Dashboard yet.

2) Install weewx-influxdb driver - thanks to Matthew Wall

https://github.com/matthewwall/weewx-influx

Edit weewx.conf accordingly:

[[Influx]]
database = [database_name]
host = [host_IP]
port = [port#]

Just the minimum settings above is sufficient, as the driver will create
the Influx Database and upload all measured data.

Restart weewx, and verify syslog that it is uploading to Influx database.

3) Back to Grafana

Start Grafana: http://[host_IP]:3000
Establish Database (per previous instructions) and Create Dashboard.

For starters on Grafana, to note that most Tutorials are outdated, thus the
following:

   1. Click the big "+" (plus sign) on the top-Left and select Dashboard
   2. Click "Choose Visualization" and select "Graph"
   3. On Graph panel, click Queries icon on Left menu (icon looks like
   "hamburger")
   4. On Query drop-down menu, select your Database (InfluxDB on my case)
   5. On "FROM" ... 'select measurement' drop-down menu, select 'record'
   6. On "SELECT" ... 'field(value)', click on VALUE (not field) and select
   your WX variable
   7. Upon selected WX variable, plot will show immediately

Now, tweak around and build own Dashboard.

[weewx-user] Re: weewx - weewx-influx - grafana

2019-12-02 Thread Xant
My system is Rpi (WeeWX) + Qnap (server).

I successfully installed InfluxDB and Grafana into Qnap, but upon starting
WeeWX and checking Syslog, I get errors:

root@raspberrypi:~# tail -f /var/log/syslog
raspberrypi weewx: restx: Influx: tags None
raspberrypi weewx: restx: Influx: binding is archive
raspberrypi weewx: restx: Influx: create database failed:
raspberrypi weewx: restx: Influx: Data will be uploaded to
http://INSERT_HOST_HERE:8086
raspberrypi weewx: engine: Starting up weewx version 3.9.2

I followed this link instructions, which has '8086' defined as Influx port:
https://qiot.qnap.com/blog/2018/12/12/install-influxdb-grafana-qnap-nas/

Also, followed Matthew Wall instructions:
https://github.com/matthewwall/weewx-influx

Qnap IP is 192.168.1.107.

Thus, weewx.conf as:

[StdRESTful]
...
[[Influx]]
database = WeeWX
host = 192.168.1.107
port = 8086

 Can anyone spot something?

Thanks, Xant

[weewx-user] WebCAM, WeatherCAM, WunderCAM - hosting

2019-12-02 Thread Xant
WunderUnderground had a previous PR mistake, and announce that would "kill"
their WebCAM/WeatherCAM hosting option & service (aka, "WunderCAM"). Now,
it seems they are achieving what they want... without announcement (thus,
avoiding backslash/protest) by just making the service impossible to use.
For months WunderCAM no longer functional, and some posting saying "after
the latest website update" (some also reporting the "old link" used to
work).

Formerly, 2 ways you could upload your WeatherCAM to Wunder:

1) Wunder do the work
You placed your direct camera image snapshot to Wunder. The catch was that
the link "must end with .jpg".
Nowadays, not many cameras allows that but a "cgi" link. Therefore, this
option is long gone for most.

2) WebCAM do the work
This is the option that (used to) works for most and for a while, where the
camera FTP and upload to Wunder at some frequency. But after the "website
update", the FTP upload still seems to work, but the images uploaded to
Wunder are not in PWS website, neither can be accessed directly.

For a while searching for free WebCAM hosting options, specially after the
Wunder PR camera "boohaha". And the following are further notes:

A) External free hosting
Found "lookr.com", which is still Ok but now increased Ads.
Now trying "webcam.io", but can not comment yet as I'm in a week "free full
service trial" (curious to find-out what/how is free service, as Ads
sometimes not disclosed).
Otherwise, still in search...

B) WebCAM with own free OEM cloud hosting
As the webcam market is flooded, some offers "free OEM cloud hosting" as
differential. I have a Reolink, which is a good cam but doesn't seems to
provide such option.
A new player that its cheaper seems to be creating some waves in price,
functionality and free hosting service: Wyze cam
(https://www.cnet.com/news/wyze-cam-the-cheapest-security-camera-ive-ever-tested-might-be-my-favorite/).

I also saw "somewhere that someone" bought a cheap cam dome and make his
own outdoor weathercam with Wyze (ala BloomSky, but at a fraction of the
cost).

C) NAS to do the work
This would be my ultimate option. I have a Qnap and previously tried their
Surveillance package, but didn't work for my purposes. Any experience
feedback?

Comments and/or replies.

2019-12-02 Thread Xant
Wunder continue spinning downhill, and now it takes about 3 pages to
(finally) get to PWS website. This as a device owner, dont even know how it
works for "general public"...

The "webcam" (aka, "wunder cam") no longer functional for months - some
posting says "after website latest update", where "older links" were still
working.

The truth is, the "PWS grandaddy" start to fade, but other options - more
PWS related, started to show-up (WeatherCloud, for example).

But interesting enough, as everything moving to Cloud and been AWS based,
the WeeWX community and "private hosting" continue to grow, thanks to WeeWX
Developers and the continue adoption of Rpi.

Now "Wundering" how long till pulling the plug on Wunder

[weewx-user] Re: Calculate ET using fineoffset WH1080 and manual rain recording

2019-11-26 Thread Xant
"Radiation approximation using the sun's azimuth angle and sunrise/sunset"
to calculate ET doesn't make sense.

Solar Radiation is a crucial data to calculate ET, and radiation varies
tremendously through the day depending on cloud cover and shades. WeeWX is
actually capable of calculate the Theoretical Maximum Solar Radiation
(maxSolarRad), but by using this data for ET calculation would be
irrational.

An approximation to convert Illuminance to Radiation - or vice-versa - by a
multiple of ~120 is acceptable. So, the image underneath can be seen as a
radiance example to compare measured vs theoretical. That is, the measured
data rarely touches the theoretical.

If ET of importance, then consider a PWS system that is capable of
measuring radiance (there are some inexpensive systems available nowadays).
