What about the notice all users get when editing a page with some pending
 edits?

Yes, it is also aligned left-to-right.

Seriously, what use case do you have for half of these bugs??

No use cases at the moment. But the review process for wmf wikis takes a while
and so it is better to request the feature now, than request the feature when
needed and getting it a year later...

In my opinion api.php should support at least all functionality from index.php.
Now that is not in all cases, that why I creating some bugs.
Other bugs are in addition to similar function in similar modules.

[Bug 27356] New: No gradient visible in SVG rendered as PNG at large sizes

2011-02-12 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=27356

Summary: No gradient visible in SVG rendered as PNG at large
sizes
   Product: MediaWiki
   Version: wikimedia-deployment
  Platform: Macintosh
   URL: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:GlaxoSmithKline_logo
.svg
OS/Version: Mac OS X 10.6
Status: NEW
  Severity: minor
  Priority: Normal
 Component: Images and files
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: alexlmul...@googlemail.com
CC: gpaum...@wikimedia.org, bryan.tongm...@gmail.com

I've seen #6250 and #10469 and don't _think_ this is a duplicate.

The SVG of the GlaxoSmithKline logo looks perfect:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:GlaxoSmithKline_logo.svg

The 200px and 500px rendered PNGs look great (using the links below the image).
However, the 1000px and 2000px versions lose the orange gradient.

I don't think this is an issue with the SVG: I can download the file, open in
Inkscape, export at whatever size and it looks fine. Is it a problem with the
PNG renderer?

Cheers,

Alex

I know that sometime back unified login happened.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Unified_login
This is what I was doing :-

a. Was in EN:WP and logged in - looked at the entries.

b. Went to hindi wikipedia and tried to edit an article. I was not logged in.

c. Thought perhaps I'm not chosen Unified login so went to
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MergeAccount, says you are
unified.

d. Did a shift-F5 and refreshed the page without the cache, for some
reason the login didn't happen.

Any pointers as to what could be the issue ? This is on Mozilla
Firefox 3.6.3 on an Ubuntu 10.04 box although do not think its
something to do with either the browser or the distribution.

I doubt File:i...@2x.png was really showing well before. The image is
805.314.562 × 284.378.236 = 229013934566672632 pixels 12.5 million pixels.

The two svg have a MIME type of application/xml instead of image/svg+xml
(probably because they miss a xmlns:ns namespace). That seems to prevent
showint it as a SVG.

1.17 does have a new SVG parser, that could cause for a change in behavior.
This parser could reject files, that were not rejected before. It might have
been that some of these 'incorrect' files were renderable by librsvg. However
the files are broken, and should be fixed (And actually can easily be fixed).

None of the original files display in Safari. If we did show them before, then
we were more lenient on SVG correctness then Operating Systems.

The PNG doesn't render either on Mac OS X and is actually uploaded last
november on top of a working file. Likely this is just an error in the file as
well. The new PNG parser could bring this problem to light I guess, but the
file is broken nonetheless.

I personally suggest wontfix for all of these, because they are actually broken
files. Commons editors could easily revert or repair them if they want to.

I suggest thinking about this logo a bit more. If help is needed, i'm sure

Page names can also begin with http://; or https://;.

In JavaScript loading there are importScript(MediaWiki:Page.js); and
importScriptURI(http://example.com/script.js;); in legacy JS libs, and in new
JS libs loading by page name without constructing URLs manually is not
supported (bug 27281).

For CSS loading with JavaScript there are
importStylesheet(MediaWiki:Page.js); and
importStylesheetURI(http://example.com/style.css;); but it may be unfriendly
to people with CSS support but without JavaScript support.

I don't know how good language selector would look like, but the current one
could perhaps be made better by allowing typed input with autocompletion
 (while
also retaining the select input). Someone in the WMF office was working on
 something like that.

Maybe http://www.gpaumier.org/blog/628_universal-language-picker/ ?

patch for kml support

I figured adding kml support would be a breeze, but I had not counted on the
brain dead browser that is IE6.

Unfortunately, kml contains the element heading, which triggers the protection
in detectScript() that protects from uploads that IE6 might mistake for HTML.
It triggers on head not sure if we can work around this, but Tim will know.

And for most of the others, the source resolution is simply too high. It's
just that you don't get a nice html error in the thumbnail that states this
(like PNGs do with the 12.5 Mpixel limit). It is visible if you open the
thumbnail itself in the browser or in a texteditor.

Only File:London_Interdean_office.tif is rather weird in that it produces no
error output at all.

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Scanned_French_books_in_TIFF is also
interesting, it doesn't generate thumbs nor errors there, but as to why, i'm
unsure.

This is not an error but merely a notice that points to a use of PHP functions
that is not completely conforming to the specification. Production sites should
be configured to not show these messages at all (php.ini defines what is shown,
do not enable STRICT and NOTICE unless you are a developer).

In your case, the reason for the message might be a number of uses of reset()
on return values of functions. We will be eliminating these at some point. A
number of calls to the function end() have recently been eliminated in SVN.
Neither cause problems in practice.

MediaWiki messages provide variables like $1 with username, example:
{{gender:$1|male form|female form}}.

In the same way I would like customise Help: pages, but now it is not possible.
If it is possible please:
* extend the functionality of {{GENDER:}} - if I leave empty username, show
proper gender form for currently loged in user, example: {{gender:|male
form|female form}}, or
* create new magic word like {{MYUSERNAME}}, example:
{{gender:{{MYUSERNAME}}|male form|female form}}.

(In reply to comment #2)
Since the emails going out now include the revision and the revision being
followed up, I think this is fixed.

Re-opening this. I'm fairly sure this isn't fixed, but the opening comment is
kind of confusing.

When you get an e-mail about a new comment on a revision, it looks like
something like this:

User Platonides posted a comment on MediaWiki.r70270.

Full URL: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Special:Code/MediaWiki/70270#c13834

Comment:

I don't see the need for history either. Why history and not edit, for example?
If any, I would modify whatlinkshere-links so that those links can be created
in MediaWiki namespace.

This is a problematic if you can't remember off-hand what the revision is
about. As time passes, it becomes easier and easier to forget which revisions
you've commented on and why, so the new comments make less sense and require
greater context.

The e-mails should look like something like this instead:

User Platonides posted a comment on MediaWiki.r70270.

Full URL: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Special:Code/MediaWiki/70270#c13834
Commit summary: * (bug 24563) Entries on Special:WhatLinksHere now have a link
to their history

New comment:

I don't see the need for history either. Why history and not edit, for example?
If any, I would modify whatlinkshere-links so that those links can be created
in MediaWiki namespace.

This way, you can know what the revision was about, so the comments hopefully
make more sense.

Having commit summary context should apply to follow-up e-mails and new comment
e-mails. I've changed the bug summary to be a bit clearer about this.

If the image height is lower than the line-height, the margin-top is applied to
the top of the line.
a very short image will not follow for 3-4px laters, thus leading to a bigger
distance from the top than it should be.
vertical-align:text-top moves the picture up, so this problem doesn't happen

[Bug 27347] Set geoiplookup on a different IP than bits

 CC||rlan...@gmail.com

--- Comment #9 from Ryan Lane rlan...@gmail.com 2011-02-12 17:09:18 UTC ---
Just to make sure you understand that blocking geoip is a fruitless effort for
more than just the problem you are having...

The geoip stuff simply takes your IP address, and correlates it with the
country you are in. We could likely go down to the city scale, but currently
are not.

You are accomplishing absolutely nothing by blocking the geoip server. Every
time you visit any site anywhere, or send a packet to any server in existence,
you are sending them the same exact information you are sending to the geoip
server. It isn't a breach of privacy as the information you are sending is
totally public, and we don't share this information with anyone. The
information is added to your session, and isn't available to anyone else.

We don't use this information to track you. In fact, we *do* use the
information to adjust your content. Currently it is only being used for
fundraiser banners, but gadget writers have plans for using the information as
well. So, if you block this server, at minimum expect you user experience to
not be as good. (Remember that gadgets are javascript, and as such are client
side, using information that is only available to you, and not to the gadget
writers)

FYI, we also use geoip services for load balancing to our caching servers. We
do geoip lookup based on your DNS resolver. This is so that we can send you to
faster servers for your area.

I'm a fairly paranoid person, but I at least am paranoid about things I

Somewhat tested patch is at http://translatewiki.net/sandwiki/gender.txt .

Minor suggestion: the structure you suggest for the $namespaceGenderAliases
array looks kind of ugly to me. Something like

 $namespaceGenderAliases = array(
 NS_USER = array( 'male' = 'Male_user', 'female' = 'Female_user' ),
 );

would make more sense to me.

Also, you might want to skip the GenderCache::needed() shortcut and just call
$wgContLang-needsGenderDistinction() from LinkBatch directly. That way you
should be able to avoid loading GenderCache.php at all for wikis that don't
need it.

The rest of it looks pretty good to me, though.

[Bug 25403] Problems with wfShellExec escaping for imagemagick's convert

2011-02-12 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=25403

--- Comment #4 from David da...@hackerspace.lu 2011-02-12 17:33:21 UTC ---
Well I can confirm that the $wgCustomConvertCommand = gm convert %s -resize
%wx%h %d; is being ignored on r80886 when uploading svg files. I.e.
svghandler::reasterize() does not respect that variable:

SvgHandler::rasterize: convert -background white -thumbnail 800x427\!
'/var/www/hackerspace.lu/www/w/images/8/84/Crowd.svg'
PNG:'/var/www/hackerspace.lu/www/w/images/thumb/8/84/Crowd.svg/800px-Crowd.svg.png'
21

this fails (although graphicsmagick-imagemagick-compat is installed) with the
following error message:

thumbnail failed on syndi: error 1 convert: Unrecognized option
(-thumbnail). from convert -background white -thumbnail 800x427\!
'/var/www/hackerspace.lu/www/w/images/8/84/Crowd.svg'
PNG:'/var/www/hackerspace.lu/www/w/images/thumb/8/84/Crowd.svg/800px-Crowd.svg.png'
21

It is NOT being ignored by the BitmapHandler though:

BitmapHandler::doTransform: Running custom convert command gm convert
'/var/www/hackerspace.lu/www/w/images/d/df/Defcon-8.jpg' -resize 800x600
'/var/www/hackerspace.lu/www/w/images/thumb/d/df/Defcon-8.jpg/800px-Defcon-8.jpg'

This works just fine.

That is more or less intended, $wgCustomConvertCommand is only meant to work
with bitmaps. For SVGs you need to set $wgSVGConverter and add your custom
convertor to $wgSVGConverters. See includes/DefaultSettings.php for examples.

However, I think the real problem is that SVGHandler::rasterize does not use
the IM specific escaping that is defined in BitmapHandler. (We should really
split our MediaHandler and MediaTransformer code one day)

[Bug 27366] New: CSS style TOCs to make it easier to hit the link

2011-02-12 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=27366

Summary: CSS style TOCs to make it easier to hit the link
   Product: MediaWiki

  Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: enhancement
  Priority: Normal
 Component: Vector Skin
AssignedTo: tpars...@wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: pa...@alt.org

Currently, if a heading in the Table of content is very short, it can be
slightly annoying trying to hit that particular heading. I suggest changing the
CSS to something like this:

 #toc li a { display:inline-block; width: 100%; }
 #toc li a:hover { background-color:#e8e8e8; }

The hover effect would make it easier to see which particular heading you're
going to hit, without being too obnoxious, and stretching the list links to the
whole box width would make it actually easier to hit the heading you want.

 It would be
better to just output the references automatically in section edits if there
 otherwise aren't any.

Yes, it would. Better still would be to:
# not limit that automatic output to section edits, but instead automatically
*output* a references section (if there are ref tags but no references section)
for the whole page or section (while displaying an existing page or section, to
cover up the problem with existing pages) - we already have detection logic for
this in the parser;
# and automatically *add* a references section (if there are ref tags but no
references section) for the whole page to the wikitext (while editing, to fix
the problem with existing pages).

An ambitious bot, set of bots, or database correction could automatically *add*
a references section (if there are ref tags but no references section) for the
whole page to the wikitext for every page in every project of every
organization that uses this extension to fix the problem with existing pages,
given approval by the developers of those projects.

Changing summary of the bug to reflect the issue.

Checking the live site I see that resources from mediawiki.legacy and
extensions are loaded fine, even in debug mode. Because those have $wgStylePath
and $wgExtensionAssetsPath in front of them which, in case of Wikimedia, starts
with http:// (http://bits.wikimedia.org/ ...etc. )

Since resources could point to a full url prefixing wgServer in all cases is
not good. So Brion's suggestion in Code Review comments:
http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Special:Code/MediaWiki/81731#c14121 sounds like a
good idea.

[Bug 14892] Allow external links in edit summary and log reason

(In reply to comment #13)
Suggestion: While I wouldn't want external links in the edit summary, but I
think it would be great if links with {{fullurl:}} could work in the edit
summary. This would allow to easily link stuff within the own wiki and some of
the interwikis, but not make it possible to link spam in the edit summary.

That would most likely require running all core parsers. Not sure if using
parser functions like {{fullurl:}} should be parsed. I would vote No, since
they are often used in summaries to perhaps explain things.
The last thing we want is having to use nowiki in an edit summary.

(In reply to comment #6)
That domain is blacklisted and has been for a very long time. Though, I do see
your point - with pages we can edit to remove links we don't want - not so for
edit summaries and log reasons. Perhaps I was hasty on that point.

True, the edit summary can't be edited. So perhaps we should only allow
external links in log entries (which limites the exposure) and not in edit
summaries.

On the other hand, now that RevisionDelete is well-integrated. This would be a
great usecase for the sysop version of revisiondelete (hiding an edit summary
that contains spam).

So parsing plain external links (ie. not [http://link linktext] but just plain
simple external links) in all edit summaries and external links is a good idea
imho. (Just like normal [[links]] are parsed as well)

This bug relates to bug 18483, which shows that cascade protection, as
currently implemented on English Wikipedia, is too slow to immediately protect
local images placed on the Main Page because it uses the job queue.

[Bug 14977] $wgServer lacks brackets in IPv6 URLs

Bumping priority a bit. In doing some local testing, one major issue immediate
becomes clear:

When no title is specified in the URL (for example, http://[::1]/wiki/),
OutputPage::output() will try to 301 redirect you to http://::1/wiki which does
not work. This goes for anything using OutputPage::redirect() really.

If you manually set $wgServer in LocalSettings (eg: 'http://[::1]'), then
everything works without a hitch as far as I can tell.

(In reply to comment #13)
There is an apache bug report opened :
 https://issues.apache.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=26005

Yes. This is really Apache (IIS? Lighty? Nginx?) giving us a raw ::1 without
brackets in SERVER_NAME, which we choose in DefaultSettings over HTTP_HOST
(which does have the brackets, interestingly, and works if I switch it).

Maybe we should switch our order of preference here. I saw a table comparing
$_SERVER variable support between the different webservers some time ago, but I
can't seem to dig it up at the moment.

 # and automatically *add* a references section (if there are ref tags but no
references section) for the whole page to the wikitext (while editing, to fix
 the problem with existing pages).

How exactly would that be done? What name would that section have? Where would
that section go? What about references with group parameter?

On enwiki, {{references}} is usually used instead of references /, the
section name is either “Notes” or “References” and the section goes before the
External links section.

I don't think logic should be implemented in MediaWiki, especially since
consensus about those things can change and other wikis have other customs. And
according to the text at [[Category:Pages with missing references list]], AWB
already fixes this and at least enwiki has a bot that fixes those errors.

Pages in edit mode should have an own CSS class in the body tag.

Purpose: When you add something to the top of pages via the skin, it also shows
up on pages in edit mode where it is most often useless. The easiest way is to
hide that content via CSS. therefor an own class is needed in tehj body tag
when the page is in edit mode.

This would save an extra php check in the skin.
