Javascript date has some issues [2] some of which have been fixed by jobatime [1]. An interesting question is how far we want to go with detail while keeping things sane. I'm tempted to have the slide work in two ways: basic modern date with a calendar (1900) and year only to handle everything that is earlier. This would avoid having to deal with the corner cases created by the tweaking of the gregorian calendar over the years. Instance creation via the wikitech web interface succeeds and the hosts begin their initial boot process. During this first boot the hosts experience failures communicating with the LDAP servers and the labs puppetmaster. This leaves them in an unusable state where ssh by normal users is not possible. Rebooting the instances does not seem to correct the issues. This is possibly due to the failure of the initial puppet run. The failure does not seem to be isolated to the deployment-prep project or the m1.large image. I can reproduce the problem in the wikimania-support and logstash projects and with small, medium, large and xlarge instances. First seen by me around 2014-03-21T22:49Z, but this was the first time I had tried to build new instances that day. Problem persists today. Times in irc logs are MDT (GMT-6). However, the fact is that captchas are deployed in Wikimedia projects, and they are used for combating spam and other misuses on a daily basis. It is also a fact that the current approach (text based) is not optimal for desktop, and clearly problematic for mobile, where reading and typing becomes more difficult. Also, the current model is based in English language / Latin text string, which puts a majority of users in disadvantage. For all these reasons it is worth investigating a way forward, keeping the current approach of using captchas. (It is also worth considering full alternatives departing from the CAPTCHA techniques, but please discuss them elsewhere) Any proposal in this direction should comply with these requirements: * At least as efficient combating spam as the current CAPTCHA method used in Wikimedia projects. Text-based captchas are claimed to be breakable about 25% of the times, according to http://cdn.ly.tl/publications/text-based-captcha-strengths-and-weaknesses.pdf * A clear solution for sourcing CAPTCHA context automatically from big pools of free text/files. Maybe we should test with spamblacklist?
