Hi folks - just a quick reminder that the vote closes today at 7:59pm our
time, so if you are eligible and interested and haven't voted as an
individual please do. If you're not sure, you can vote neutral. Note the
drafters are also interested in any and all comments!

Any last comments to me about New England Wikimedians, please let me know.

[Wikimedia-boston] Movement charter vote

2024-07-02 Thread phoebe ayers
Dear Greater Bostonians,

Our usergroup, Wikimedia New England, is eligible to vote in the movement
charter ratification vote:
https://meta.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/Movement_Charter

Thanks to SJ for getting our paperwork in order to make this possible. I'll
be voting on behalf of the group, as SJ is also the representative for
another user group.

The charter has been developed through a long and involved international
process. It seeks to define roles, responsibilities and governance among
different movement bodies, such as the WMF and chapters. The ratification
vote is happening now for both groups and individuals (established editors
can also vote for themselves).

If you have any feelings about the movement charter - positive, negative or
ambivalent - please express your preferred vote to me this week, by July
8th (the day before the vote closes) either publicly on the list or
privately. Because we don't really have defined membership, I'll try to
discern the feelings of the group based on the feedback I get. (In other
words, if you identify as a New England Wikimedian, you are a part of the
group, and feel free to tell me what you think).

Questions? Let me know.

Cheers,
Phoebe

[Wikimedia-boston] Editathon at MIT: Jan 16

2024-01-02 Thread phoebe ayers
Hi folks,
I'm planning an edit-a-thon at MIT on Tuesday, January 16, in the afternoon
and you are all cordially invited. We'll celebrate Wikipedia's 23 birthday
(one day off of Wikipedia Day, which is Jan 15), and this year's public
domain day - lots of good stuff
 is now in the public
domain. Our theme this year is "Boston and Beyond" - let's edit on topics
related to campus, Cambridge, greater Boston, and beyond.

The meetup page is here:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/Boston/Boston_and_Beyond_IAP_2024

(and please do register here so I
have a good headcount). I'll bring snacks, and come by anytime; we'll start
with a class on how to edit.

Also, a special request : please help me find and list articles and
things-to-do related to the theme of Boston and Beyond, and link them on
the meetup page above. Articles about the quirky and obscure corners of our
fair region, and articles with issues that could be easily worked on by new
editors, are especially welcome.

thanks and hope to see you soon!

something on campus during IAP if folks like. A low key editathon, perhaps
another session featuring images of Boston? We have this vast historical

2023-08-30 Thread phoebe ayers
Hi,

So basically the deal is staff, faculty and student groups can reserve
classrooms; I'm not sure individual students can. For study sessions etc
most people use the quick room tool:
https://registrar.mit.edu/classrooms/reserving-classroom/quickroom

But that's not a reservation. Let me know if your reservation goes through,
maybe it's changed.

I'm staff so I can reserve a classroom. However, it's a bit luck of the
draw and is unlikely to be in Stata. What I would suggest instead is we
meet in 14N-132, a library classroom that is just outside the music
library, accessible to the public. I need to be there to open the doors,
but otherwise we can use it whenever.

MIT closes doors to the public at 7, so we'll need to get going before that.

However, please confirm you want to do it on that Tuesday. Things get very
busy at the beginning of the semester and you mentioned your schedule has
changed - maybe we should do it later?

Keep me posted and I'm happy to reserve a room or use the library room.

Cheers,
Phoebe

Welcome to Boston! What brings you here, and how long do you plan to
 stay?

I think I have used some of the bots, scripts, or other tools you have
developed; if so, I thank you for creating and maintaining them.

We have a constant influx of new people to the region each year, with
all the challenges and all the opportunities this entails.

In the past, the many schools, libraries, museums, and other cultural
resources of Boston have provided great locations for edit-a-thons and
 other events.

Your ideas and your organizational help would be much appreciated.

[Wikimedia-boston] vote in the board of trustees election for WMF

2022-09-05 Thread Phoebe Ayers
Dear New England Wikimedians,

This is just a quick reminder that community elections for the board
of trustees for the Wikimedia Foundation are occurring, and voting
ends tomorrow night (just like the Massachusetts State Primary, which
you should also vote in if you live in MA!)

Instructions and a link to the voting portal is here:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_elections/2022/Community_Voting

There are six candidates, all of whom are qualified, and there are two
open seats. There's links to community questions and answers that
might be helpful and there's also a new experimental election compass
tool here: https://board-elections-compass-2022.toolforge.org/ (though
I cannot vouch for the tool's accuracy/usefulness). The voting is a
ranked-choice system. Anyone who has made at least 300 edits on any
project, plus at least 20 edits between January 5th and July 5th of
this year, is eligible to vote. Many developers, staff and grant
recipients are also eligible:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_elections/2022/Voter_eligibility_guidelines

The Wikimedia Foundation trustees are volunteers who provide oversight
of the WMF CEO and who approve the WMF operating budget, annual plan,
fundraising, and high-level policies. While this role typically
doesn't directly affect day to day work on the projects, there are
implications for what strategic directions the WMF pursues and the
relationship between the WMF and affiliates. Let me know if you have
questions about the trustee role. And I encourage everyone active in
Wikimedia and Wikipedia to vote if you are eligible!

best,
Phoebe

[Wikimedia-boston] Call for ideas: Wikipedia 20 celebration, & WikiConference North America

2020-12-03 Thread phoebe ayers
Dear all,

I was so happy to see A's email about a New England Public Domain day
event! I would love to see this happen and we have some ideas from MIT to
contribute (more soon!). It was also a good reminder to send this note, as
I am thinking about the *20th anniversary of Wikipedia,* which will happen
on Friday, January 15th, 2021.

Though we can't gather in person, I'd like to mark the occasion with a
series of talks and events - perhaps formatted as a mini-conference. I've
made a page to propose this -- please add any and all ideas here, and sign
if you'd be interested in attending:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/Boston/Wikipedia_20
This is just an outline of an idea, so propose anything you'd like to see
(including things for days/times that aren't Jan 15).

Along these same lines - the WikiConference North America crew is
developing a virtual conference for December 11-13, two weeks from now. It
will feature an exploration of open culture sites on Friday, talks on
Saturday, and edit-a-thons on Sunday. Join for any part you can; all are
welcome. https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiConference_North_America/2020

I hope to see you all virtually very soon!

Re: [Wikimedia-boston] Delegate for Wikimedia Summit 2020 (it could be you!)

2019-12-15 Thread phoebe ayers
Yes, thanks again Ben! And thanks Laura and others who are interested in
this process. I'm really pleased multiple people were interested!

And, thanks for your vote of confidence in me. I have now registered for
the summit, so barring complications, I'm planning to attend. I think this
year will be crucial as we try to decide what the strategy process, which
has been somewhat unwieldy to date and hard to follow, means for affiliates
like ours.

Per Ben's request, here is a small bio for people who don't know me -- I
have been a Wikipedian since 2003. I primarily edit English Wikipedia &
Wikidata, but have dabbled in other projects (Wikivoyage, Commons, Spanish
Wikipedia etc). I have spent most of my Wikimedia career as an events
organizer, and have been involved in planning many of the Wikimanias
(including Wikimania 2006 here in Cambridge) and various other conferences.
I also served on the Board of Trustees for the Wikimedia Foundation from
2010-2015 as a community-elected & chapter-selected member. I am also a
librarian, and have spent a lot of time trying to help Wikimedia and
libraries become closer partners - through events, trainings, writing, etc.
Currently I am a librarian at MIT, where I specialize in engineering; I
moved to the area in 2015 and before that lived in California, where I
worked for UC Davis (but I spent a lot of time here, so people often think
I've lived in Boston longer!) My current personal interests as an editor
are citations in Wikidata (the WikiCite project) and climate change
information on Wikipedia, but I've done many different things over the
years.

As for the summit -- and Wikimedia New England generally -- I really want
to present the perspectives of people who teach with Wikipedia in their
classrooms/libraries as well as individual editors, and I think this group
has national (and global) expertise in that. We have such a strong history
of interesting Wikipedia projects in this area with individual champions in
many universities; I think the trick is to share this expertise and help
the group feel more cohesive, and also help those currently running
projects feel more supported. This group doesn't have formal roles per se -
anyone who wants to lead on any particular aspect is more than welcome to -
so if you want to try something out with the group let us/me know and we
can try to make it happen!

cheers,
Phoebe

2019-12-10 Thread phoebe ayers
Dear Ben,
Thanks so much for keeping on top of this. As Ben mentioned, it's a good
opportunity to meet with others from global Wikimedia affiliates; the focus
of the meeting is likely to be on movement strategy (see
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Strategy/Wikimedia_movement/2018-20 for the
current strategic process) as well as techniques for building affiliates.
It would be great if the person going was also able to work on some
Wikimedia New England organizing this year.

Thanks Laura for volunteering! I haven't been the last few years (never for
New England, actually) and am also free / interested in going next year.
But I want to make sure it's open to all.

Every year it seems we talk about having a slightly more robust process for
choosing a delegate, but we haven't developed this to date. Do you have
ideas Ben? (or anyone?) Discussion is open to all who considers themselves
part of Wikimedia New England (a loose affiliation!)

Thanks again Ben.

[Wikimedia-boston] Wikipedia Day edit-a-thon, MIT

2019-12-09 Thread phoebe ayers
Hi all,

We at MIT Libraries are pleased to host a Wikipedia Day edit-a-thon again
for 2020 centered on newly-in-the-public domain books that MIT has
digitized. We will have it on January 15, 2020 (Wikipedia's 19th birthday!)
from 4-7pm in Barker Engineering Library on MIT's campus.

Find out more here:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/Boston/Public_Domain_Day_2020

and register here: https://libcal.mit.edu/event/6126715

We will have birthday cake!

Also, you may be familiar with MIT's tradition of hosting many workshops
and events during the Independent Activities Period (IAP) in January. My
colleague who is also involved in our edit-a-thon is teaching another
workshop that may be of interest to Wikipedians who work with copyright and
free licenses called "Is it in the public domain?" That's on Jan 7. Find
out more and register here:
https://www.eventbrite.com/e/is-it-in-the-public-domain-2020-intellectual-property-speaker-series-tickets-84692057223

Hope to see you all at the edit-a-thon!

[Wikimedia-boston] welcome! and new slack channel! and jan meetup?

2019-11-13 Thread phoebe ayers
Hi all,

Welcome to new members, and hello to everyone who was able to join us at
WikiConference New England! It was exciting to meet everyone.

We had a nice meetup of people in New England at the conference. Notes are
here:
https://etherpad.wikimedia.org/p/wcna2019-3180

1) There was a suggestion of creating a new slack channel for discussion. I
just created this, you can join with this link:
https://join.slack.com/t/wikinewengland/shared_invite/enQtODMyNTg1NTg4MzcyLTQ3MTNlNTg1YWIyNmUzMDY0ZDU5ODdjZTQwYzk2MWZlYmE5NWNmZjRkNjRhZmIxZTkyOGFiNDlmY2Q0OWQyY2M
it is wikinewengland.slack.com, if you have trouble with the invitation let
me know.

2) For those who don't know: you can apply to the Wikimedia Foundation for
a "rapid grant" for small expenses related to an editathon or other event.
For Wikipedia Day 2020 events this year (January 15) you'll need to apply
in this month's cycle - so by November 15 (in 2 days!) (December is being
reserved for proposals related to Wiki Loves Africa). details:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/Rapid
I know many people do host events, so wanted to make you aware of this. We
will be having a big editathon at MIT that week.

3) related, I would like to offer to host a followup New England organizers
meeting at MIT, where we can get together and talk about activities at our
respective institutions. When would be a good time to do this?

all best,
Phoebe

[Wikimedia-boston] New England Roundtable at WCNA invitation to participate

2019-10-30 Thread phoebe ayers
Hi all,

As part of WikiConference North America at MIT, Nov 9-11 (
https://wikiconference.org/wiki/2019/Main_Page) MIT Librarians are hosting
a “New England Roundtable.” Our hope is that participants from New England
and New England institutions will use this as a chance to meet each other,
tell each other what we are doing, and share ideas and information. Note,
if you haven’t signed up for the conference but haven’t yet, it’s not too
late to join us for the weekend!

The session is from 4:00-5:30 on Saturday, in the 4th floor Commons area of
the Stata Center. As a part of this session, we want to invite you to give
short (3-5 minute) updates on your Wikimedia-related activities or cool
Wikipedia-related project that you have done - or hope to do! - at your
institution or as an individual in New England. We are hoping this session
helps everyone share and learn more about what is going on in our area.

If you want to sign up, there's a google doc here:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/19mZvdS65_0tibffMNUhf8s4zK_WEiG6uTHlydml_EpU/edit?usp=sharing

and we can add that to the wiki.

Questions about this or the conference in general? Hit me up at

[Wikimedia-boston] request for help: wikiconference travel page

2019-09-27 Thread phoebe ayers
Hello Boston area Wikimedians!

I have an editing task for the conference that needs local assistance - if
you want to help out but only have a few minutes read on

Our travel page needs some love:
https://wikiconference.org/wiki/2019/Travel

we need to update it with info about getting from the airport to downtown
and MIT; info on the T & charliecards, info on food in Kendall square
around campus; maps, attractions in Boston... you get the idea. Please
don't change the information on hotel discount codes, but everything else
is fair game.

You'll need to make a separate account on the wikiconference.org site but
otherwise it should be like editing any other wikimedia project. Please
let me know if you have any questions! And thank you!!!

North America, at MIT: http://wikiconference.org

It's a chance to meet Wikipedians from all over the country! Registration
is now open, and please do register if you intend to attend so we have an
accurate headcount. I hope you and everyone else on the list will be able
to attend.

Thanks everyone!

[Wikimedia-boston] childcare for WikiConference North America this Nov

2019-09-16 Thread phoebe ayers
Hi all,

We have had a request for childcare at the WikiConference North America
this fall (Nov 8-11) and I am trying to get a sense of how many people
might be interested in this service. Note, we don't have anything set up
yet, but I am trying to gauge interest as there are different options
depending on how many kids there are.

So, please let me know offlist if you would be potentially interested in a
conference-arranged childcare option for the weekend.

[Wikimedia-boston] Poll: Wiknic dates!

2019-06-27 Thread phoebe ayers
Hi all,

The Great American Wiknic is an annual project to organize wiki
get-togethers over a potluck picnic, across the country. Wikimedia New
England took last year off from the Wiknic, but let's get together this
year!

Here is a poll for weekends in July and the first weekend in August:
https://doodle.com/poll/afndyinh7mgk3bt8

If you would like to join, pick what dates you would be able to join. The
time is flexible, but afternoon seems to work well for most. We'll go to a
centrally located park - the Boston Common has worked well in the past.

Please try to vote this week, and I will send out a note announcing the
date!

Re: [Wikimedia-boston] Wiki-Breakfast at Friendly Toast, 8:30

2019-06-27 Thread phoebe ayers
Well, there was consensus that we would like to have another Wiknic this
summer: I will send out a poll for dates for that shortly!
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Wiknic

We also discussed the Wikimania program and plans:
https://wikimania.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimania
Several of us are attending Wikimania; if anyone is attending and would
like to connect with other New England based people who are going, let me
know.

We also discussed the PubPub project (a new collaborative editor developed
by MIT folks) and discussed a book project to celebrate Wikipedia's 20th
anniversary (which will be Jan 15, 2021) and look at lessons learned from
the last twenty years of Wikipedia history. Draft essays submitted to the
book are available now on PubPub for public comment, through July, here:
https://wikipedia20.pubpub.org

Lastly, some of the attendees spotted a beautiful hawk that was hanging out
in the 1 Kendall square plaza, perhaps also waiting for breakfast; maybe
those pictures will get uploaded to commons :)

great to see those who could make it and I'll try to organize some non-last
minute meetups for the future (anyone in the group is also welcome to
propose a meetup). Look for the picnic dates poll next.
best,
Phoebe

[Wikimedia-boston] Fwd: [All-affiliates] ASBS results

2019-06-13 Thread phoebe ayers
Dear Wikimedia-Boston-ers, FYI. Thanks for all your input into the
elections process. Here are the results for the two board seats that were
elected by the affiliates (user groups and Wikimedia chapters).

Subject: [All-affiliates] ASBS results
To:

*Dear Wikimedians, We are writing to let you know the result of the
election for the 2 Affiliate Selected Board Seats on the Wikimedia
Foundation board. The successful candidates were Nataliia Tymkiv and Shani
Evenstein Sigalov. A total of 122 affiliates voted, 85% of the 143 eligible
to vote, which is a record. As you know the election was conducted under a
variation of the Single Transferable Vote, which meant that prorated votes
were redistributed between candidates to come up with the final result. In
the 10th step of counting the final place, after Nataliia Tymkiv was
elected, was between Shani Evenstein Sigalov (40.519678) and Richard Knipel
(40.480322). We have put the full count narrative on meta so that others
can verify it if they wish.[1] It is the closest ASBS result for some time,
and all candidates brought very valuable perspectives to the work of the
WMF. In the 9th step of counting Reda Kerbouche lost by a very small
margin. Adding a ballot with rank #1 for Richard or Reda would result in
them being elected instead of Shani. The same goes for removing a ballot.
Changing the ranking on one of the ballots in a specific can way can result
in a different outcome for the second seat. This is an election in which
every vote counts. As in any election, there is a chance that some voters
misinterpreted the instructions and voted wrongly. We don't see a
justification for an action as extraordinary and controversial as opening
votes for review after the vote period is over. The instructions were
visible and clear: "Rank any candidate from 1 (your preferred candidate) to
11 (your least preferred candidate)." After voting, voters received a
confirmation email stating the name of each candidate they voted with the
number of their rank: Rank 1, Rank 2, ... The agency of voters should be
respected. As part of the retrospective we may identify areas of
improvements on our side, but still the process was quite simple and
documented. Some voters realized they made a mistake and requested a new
ballot. New ballots were issued in those cases. This choice was done
because of the specific situation of this election, since the process was
complex for new affiliates and participation, diversity and inclusion were
a clear goal.[2] We have published on meta information about who got a new
ballot within the voting deadline.[3] The Election Facilitators have been
available nearly 24 hours a day monitoring the various communication
channels to answer any questions affiliates might have. We did our best at
answering all of them. After our own scrutiny of the data, and based on our
experience in community processes, we strongly advise the community to
respect the integrity of the process, and advise against allowing any
modifications of votes at this point. If the votes had been reopened for
modification with or without publishing vote results, that would have
caused significant confusion and criticism that could have jeopardized the
entire election. We will publish a debrief with recommendations for a next
ASBS process on meta.[4] We invite all representatives of affiliates to a
feedback session at Wikimania.[5] We would like to congratulate Nataliia
Tymkiv and Shani Evenstein Sigalov and thank everyone who stood. Regards,

Dear all,

Sorry about the rather late reminder, but - thanks to everyone who has
given feedback about these board seats. I'll be voting at the end of the
week on Friday (aka the last minute) so if anyone else wants to send me
your thoughts please do. If it is helpful, here is a useful scoring matrix
from Wikimedia Netherlands which I intend to use, that lists some of the
qualities it is good for board members to have:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Assessing_candidates_for_the_Affiliate-selected_Board_seats_of_the_Board_of_Trustees.pdf

I'll be looking at candidates with this tool myself.
thanks all!

[Wikimedia-boston] Wikimania registration & submission deadlines

2019-05-25 Thread phoebe ayers
Hi all,

I just wanted to send a quick note that Wikimania, the annual conference of
the Wikimedia movement, will be this year in Stockholm, Sweden, from 14-16
August, with two days of hackathon/pre-conference learning days (workshops
about Wikimedia) beforehand.

If you are planning to go, early bird registration deadline is May 31:
https://wikimania.wikimedia.org/wiki/2019:Registration

and submission deadline for the program is June 1st:
 https://wikimania.wikimedia.org/wiki/2019:Submissions

Unlike past years, the program this year is arranged into "spaces" which
are various tracks, each with their own coordinator. Submit to the space
that you think fits the theme of your presentation the best and it will be
reviewed alongside others in that theme.

If anyone has any questions about what Wikimania is like in general,
although I am not involved in planning this year, I and several others on
the list have been to the conference many times and would be happy to
answer questions!

[Wikimedia-boston] affiliate-selected WMF board seats

2019-04-30 Thread phoebe ayers
Hi all,
The election cycle for Wikimedia Foundation board seats is open this year
for affiliates: that is, user groups & chapters. The Wikimedia Foundation
is the non-profit organization that hosts Wikipedia & her sister projects,
& they have a board of trustees that is partially composed of people from
the Wikimedia community. This election is part of the process for choosing
those people.

Wikimedia New England is eligible to vote in this election. The basic
process is:
* candidates were nominated / could self-nominate: (today is the last day!)
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Affiliate-selected_Board_seats/2019/Nominations

* there are open questions/answers from each candidate that will be posted
here:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Affiliate-selected_Board_seats/2019/Questions

* voting will happen in late May. I volunteered to be the main point of
contact for Wikimedia New England this year, which means I will be voting
on behalf of the group. The total list of groups voting is here:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Affiliate-selected_Board_seats/2019/Eligible_entities

We don't have a process in our user-group for internal voting on
candidates, as some user groups do, and I realize not everyone getting this
message realizes that they might be considered part of a user group! (we
also don't have formal membership, but if you are doing Wikipedia work in
the New England area you can be part of the group if you want!). However,
despite not really having a process, I don't want to vote on our behalf
without talking to the other members of the group. What I propose is this:

* take a look at the candidates (above) and email me (phoebe.ay...@gmail.com)
if you have a preference for or against any of the candidates. Two of the
candidates are currently on the board and are running for re-election.
* if you don't have a preference, but want to be involved/learn more about
the election, let me know that. Let me know by the end of next week please.

If there's interest in this process, I'll make some sort of local poll &
convene a usergroup meeting in May. If there's no replies, I will consult
with other active members of the group one on one and then vote on our
behalf.

Sound OK? Let me know if you have any questions. Also, I was once a WMF
board member appointed through this process, so if you have any questions
about the board in general let me know.

cheers,
Phoebe

[Wikimedia-boston] Fwd: FW: 3/4 - workshop on teaching with Wikipedia

2019-02-27 Thread phoebe ayers
Dear all,
Wiki Education will be in town next week, and they are having a workshop at
MIT on Monday 3/4, 1:00p-2:30p. Sorry about the late notice, but if you are
interested in teaching in the classroom with Wikipedia, I encourage you to

Teaching with Wikipedia

https://libcal.mit.edu/event/5195759

With the sheer volume of information now available on the internet, having
trustworthy, accurate digital resources is more important than ever. The
general public no longer only turns to publishers, subject matter experts,
or even news outlets for most of their information; they also look to
Wikipedia. But Wikipedia is edited by volunteers, with varying interests,
educational contexts, and access to academic publications. The site still
lacks detailed and accurate articles about all topics, in all languages,
and many articles are inaccurate, misrepresented, or missing altogether.

That's why Wiki Education, a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving
Wikipedia's quality, equity, and reach, is working to amplify the impact of
courses, libraries, and student research. By joining one of Wiki
Education's programs, you can help add reliable, accessible academic
information to the worlds largest free encyclopedia. Any instructor,
librarian or staff member may participate by assigning students to edit
Wikipedia's content, learning how to contribute to Wikipedia themselves, or
providing Wikipedia volunteers with remote access to scholarship related to
your field.

During this workshop, we will discuss content gaps on Wikipedia, and we
will encourage attendees to join our initiatives to close these gaps and
make information more accessible and comprehensible to the public. Wiki

[Wikimedia-boston] Public Domain Day/Wikipedia Day event at MIT, 1/15

2018-12-02 Thread phoebe ayers
hi all,

Please save the date for an edit-a-thon celebrating the public domain - and
Wikipedia's 18th birthday! - at MIT on Tuesday, January 15, 3-6pm (and
possibly later).
*information*:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/Boston/Public_Domain_Day_2019

*registration:* https://libcal.mit.edu/event/4841683

*Description: *

Join the MIT Libraries during IAP for a Public Domain-themed Wikipedia
edit-a-thon! January 1st is Public Domain Day – the day when works
published in 1923 go out of copyright in the United States and enter the
public domain, making them available for anyone to reuse and remix. This is
the first time in twenty years that new published works have entered the
public domain! To celebrate, the MIT Libraries are digitizing 100 works
from 1923 selected from our collections. Because they are now out of
copyright, we can freely use images and text from these works on Wikipedia
and other open licensed projects.

Join us to explore these digitized works and learn how to contribute to
Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons. What did engineering education look like
in the 1920s at MIT? (Did you know there was once a food science program
here?) Want to explore state of the art scientific instruments from 100
years ago? What about novels and poems from classic authors?

We’ll introduce the works and give you an introduction to editing Wikipedia
and ideas for topics to work on, or bring our own topics. No prior
Wikipedia experience is required. We will have support from experienced
Wikipedia editors and librarians, as well as snacks and pizza. Join us for
an afternoon devoted to exploring engineering in the Jazz Age and
contributing to the world’s largest reference work.

We will combine this with an event to celebrate Wikipedia's 18th Birthday
! Wikipedia was founded on
January 15, 2001. We'll have pizza and cake into the evening to celebrate.
Wikipedians old and new are invited to attend.

Please join us for any portion of the event, but do *register here
* or list yourself below so we have
an accurate count for lunch.

*What*: Public Domain Day Edit-a-thon

*When*: January 15, 2019, 3-6pm

*Where*: Massachusetts Institute of Technology
, 77
Massachusetts Ave, Cambridge, MA, *14N-132* (building 14, Room 132 - the
library computer classroom).

Hope to see you!

[Wikimedia-boston] Fwd: FW: Decolonizing Wikipedia 12/1/17

2017-11-22 Thread phoebe ayers
Hi all,

I'm forwarding this editathon announcement on behalf of Amanda Rust and the
group at Northeastern. This is a really interesting topic with lots of
specialized library sources. Members of the public are welcome, see below &
the meetup page for details. Leave a note on the talk page if you have
questions.

Happy Thanksgiving!

best,

Phoebe

*Sent:* Tuesday, November 21, 2017 2:02 PM
*To:* bosto...@listserv.neu.edu
*Subject:* Decolonizing Wikipedia 12/1/17

Hi all,

Please see below details for an upcoming Wikipedia editing event sponsored
by Northeastern's Digital Scholarship Group and the Early Caribbean Digital
Archive. Apologies for cross-posting!

De-colonizing Wikipedia: Editing Romantic Depictions of Colonial History
and Literature

When? Friday, December 1st, 2017, 11:00am - 3:00pm

Where? Snell Library, Northeastern University, 360 Huntington Avenue,
Boston, Massachusetts 02115

.

Who? Open to the public as well as Northeastern University students,
faculty, and staff.

Inspired by two recuperative digital archives at Northeastern, the Early
Caribbean Digital Archive and the Women
Writers Project , this event seeks to
revise Wikipedia articles which extend romantic and orientalist
representations of colonial history and literature. Our goal is to
neutralize the heightened romantic and sentimental language used on
Wikipedia to represent historical figures, paying special attention to
representations of marginalized persons such as women, free and enslaved
people of color, and indigenous persons. We will focus on Wikipedia
articles on historical persons, travel narratives, natural histories,
captivity narratives, and slave narratives.

This hack-a-thon style session will focus on editing and updating Wikipedia
pages in a group setting. You do not need any prior experience with
Wikipedia to participate, just bring a laptop and a power supply. Attendees
from outside Northeastern will need a photo ID to sign into the
library—Just let the front desk staff know you are here for the
edit-a-thon. Bring your suggestions for articles that need to be improved
or authored, or help edit articles from the "Suggested Topics
"
list. Pizza will be served.

Best,

Liz

I’m seeking some trainers to assist at a Wikipedia Edit-a-Thon we’re
organizing at the upcoming (in mid-November) Society for Biblical
Literature Annual Meeting in Boston. The idea is to host about 100 people,
and train them in editing Wikipedia pages, through a workshop focusing on
increasing the representation of female biblical scholars on Wikipedia (and
within a ‘happy hour’ setting!).

Some of us have hosted events like this before, and have done some editing,
but we’re all pretty basic users, and would love to have some more expert
editors either leading the training or just available as roaming helpers.
We understand that your expertise deserves compensation—please talk with us
about this if you are interested!

All are welcome. The theme is "open access", to celebrate Open Access Week,

dissertations from MIT to reference articles, working on articles about
open access initiatives... or of course feel free to work on any topic that
interests you.

Hope to see you there. Please sign up on the wiki page if you're coming so
we have a rough head count:

See you soon,

Re: [Wikimedia-boston] Wiknic: Sunday July 16th!

2017-07-09 Thread phoebe ayers
Good idea to double check - there's construction everywhere. Also do note
that Memorial Drive is closed on Sundays to cars -- if you are driving
Google maps does know about this, so it should suggest alternate
routes/bridges. Parking on residential streets is free on Sundays in
Cambridge, though severely limited in the area, and there are a couple of
garages.

If you're taking the T, the Harvard Square red line stop is a few blocks
away.

[Wikimedia-boston] Art + Feminism @ MIT, March 11 2017

2017-02-24 Thread phoebe ayers
Art + Feminism is a global initiative made up of “students,
librarians, professors, artists, art workers, and art lovers” who
meaningfully enhance “the body of knowledge available about feminism
and the arts on Wikipedia” (http://www.artandfeminism.org/). MIT
libraries and community are a part of this project, and this year we
are hosting an Art + Feminism Event on Saturday March 11, 2017, from
11am-4pm.

Our theme focuses on the art of comics, graphic novels, and zines, but
participants are welcome to work on any topic related to Art +
Feminism. No experience editing Wikipedia is required -- we will offer
Wikipedia training, and experienced Wikipedians will be on-hand for
one-on-one help. The event will also feature hands-on creative
activities, including zine making and basic cartooning. Everyone is
welcome, and food will also be provided.

More info & signup:

Re: [Wikimedia-boston] January 2017 events and updates

2017-01-12 Thread phoebe ayers
Hi all,

Let's do it. Let's gather at the tables near Steam Cafe on the 4th floor of
building 7:
http://whereis.mit.edu/?go=7

This is close to Mass Ave. If you are coming into MIT's building 7 from
Mass Ave (77 Mass Ave, the building with the big columns), head into lobby
7 and then take the stairs or elevator on the left hand side to the 4th
floor. We will be at the nearby tables, to the right. We'll put up signs.
If you are coming from the T (Kendall or Central) follow the map above to
get to building 7. Call 530-204-8302 if you get lost.

Come at 3pm and we'll have cake and music to celebrate sweet 16.

[Wikimedia-boston] wiknic outcomes

2016-07-18 Thread phoebe ayers
Dear all,

We had a very successful Wiknic on Saturday! Thanks to everyone for coming
out, especially Richard who came from NYC!!! (and whose cool sign made all
the difference).

We found a shady spot (even though it kept moving on us), ate great food
(including some Indian delicacies), and talked about all kinds of topics.
We had a total of 16 people throughout the afternoon, and several
passers-by noticed our sign and came over to talk about Wikipedia as well!
(Several people asked about joining the mailing list, so if there are any
new people here: welcome!)

We also talked about local Wikipedia outreach and our plans for the year.
There are several edit-a-thons in the works for the fall, so keep an eye
out for announcements. There is also interest in holding more regular
meetups, and Abhishek volunteered a space at Emerson, which is centrally
located right next to the Boston Common. We also talked about the
opportunity to take a leadership role in the group if anyone is interested
-- more on that soon.

Lastly, given the success of the big sign we also decided that Wikimedia
New England needs a popup banner of our own. If anyone wants to help work
on getting that (we can apply for a WMF rapid grant, but need to figure out
the artwork & vendor) let the list know and we'll coordinate.

Finally, I have some good pictures of the meetup -- if you were there and
object to having pictures on Commons, please let me know. Otherwise, I'll
upload them next week.

cheers,
Phoebe

p.s. for the record/ for next year: the southeast corner of the public
garden seems like an excellent spot to hold the Wiknic! Quite findable and
shady.

Let's meet in the public garden, near the corner of Boylston and Charles,
near the Wendell Phillips statue. It looks like there is open grass there,
good for picnicking! And hopefully it will be less crowded.

[Wikimedia-boston] Wiknic tmw: one more update/reminder

2016-07-15 Thread phoebe ayers
Hi all,

A few more updates for the Wiknic tomorrow:

* As I mentioned, it turns out there's a giant music festival happening on
our chosen weekend on the Common.

- On the plus side, we will have musical accompaniment and can take
pictures of bands for Wikipedia.

- On the minus side, it will be crowded and it may be hard to find a spot /
find our group. Richard & I will go early, find a spot, and install the
Wikipedia banner -- look for that! If you get lost, text me: 530-204-8302

We will try for the south side of Frog pond, per the wiki page -- if that's
impossible for some reason I'll update the wiki page & send an email here.

* It will be HOT -- so bring water and other beverages as well as
sunscreen, hats etc. Take care that your potluck items can't easily spoil.
(I was going to make deviled eggs but am cancelling that, too hot).

* If anyone has additional picnic blankets, please bring them! I only have
one and it's not big enough for everyone. Also, please update the wiki page
with your potluck dishes.

I think that's it for now... looking forward to seeing everyone tomorrow
and hoping it's not too crazy.

[Wikimedia-boston] Reminder: Wiknic, 7/16

2016-07-11 Thread phoebe ayers
Hi all!

This is a reminder that we are planning to have the New England Wikimedians
Wiknic this Saturday, from 1-5pm or so, in Boston Common.

Details and signup:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/Boston/Wiknic

This is a potluck so please bring something to eat or drink, and also bring
a friend -- people new to Wikipedia are welcome!

Starting around 2pm we will also have a discussion about the New England
user group and our plans for the coming year, including group leadership.
The current group leaders, Amanda and Maia, would like to pass the torch on
to new people -- so, if you are interested in having a leadership role,
please consider volunteering!
The responsibilities are light and involve:
* facilitating recurring meetups and helping publicize events
* filling out a little paperwork and reporting, and facilitating the choice
of a representative to the Wikimedia conference in Berlin.

Questions? Please ask any of us!

2016-06-23 Thread phoebe ayers
Hi all,

Thanks for voting and sorry for the delay in confirming!

Let's have the Wiknic *Saturday July 16 1-5pm. *Rain date: the following
weekend, Sunday July 24th 1-5pm.

Planning page -- please sign up and add ideas!
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/Boston/Wiknic

Note, it was suggested to me that we discuss some future plans for the New
England usergroup at this event, including who will lead it next year and
also what sorts of activities we'd like to do. I'm proposing that we start
that discussion at 2pm, leaving time to get settled first!

[Wikimedia-boston] 2016 wiknic!

2016-06-11 Thread phoebe ayers
Hi all,

This year the Great American Wiknic is scheduled "for weekend dates in
July, with a focus on July 9-10":
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Wiknic

This activity just involves having a picnic in a park somewhere, and
inviting people to bring food and talk about Wikipedia!

It looks like the Boston area hasn't had a summer Wiknic in a couple of
years, but in the past this event has been on in the Boston Common.

Would people be interested in getting together on Sat July 9 or Sun 10? If
you're not around that weekend, would a later weekend in July work? We
haven't had a general meetup in a long time either, so it could also be a
good time to catch up and talk about plans for editathons and events for
the rest of the year, and ideas that we all have for what to do next.

Please discuss! If there's interest but no consensus on a good date, I will
make a poll with various dates so we can gauge availability.

[Wikimedia-boston] African languages

2013-09-10 Thread phoebe ayers
Hi Boston Wikimedians,

I'm exploring the idea of doing outreach to university language learners to
help build smaller Wikipedias.

Since Boston is a hotbed of big universities, and consequently many classes
in rarely-taught languages, I'm wondering if anyone in your group has done
this? (For instance, I was looking at BU's African Languages program --
http://www.bu.edu/africa/forstudents/alp/ -- it would be really cool to get
these students & faculty to work on the Xhosa, Wolof, etc. Wikipedias).

Thoughts?

Sunday evening, I'd love to see you all. If there's interest, please suggest
good places to meet up.

Re: [Wikimedia-boston] BLP at the BPL : an off-schedule meetup to light up your March

2009-03-14 Thread phoebe ayers
This will be Saturday March 28th, in the afternoon (around 1pm). We
will have a wikipedia sign. Bring your referencing problems if you
like and we can all work on them. I can also give short wikipedia
referencing and/or library research tutorials if anyone wants. Bring
your BPL card if you have one!
