The problem of that page's wording being rather vague and unclear about
what, exactly, you'd unsubscribe from is a genuine issue that needs
fixin' (that is, while what the intent is would be clear to technically
savvy people as illustrated by the responses on this very thread, it
clearly needs to be wordsmithed into making more sense).

That said, I'm pretty sure absolutely nobody sane believes Jimmy
personally sits down and writes bits of web interface used by
fundraising, so the dig at his expense is not only gratuitous, but
detracts from any point you were trying to make.

I like the name, WikiConvention. Still not happy about "Wikimania" since
"mania" is a serious medical issue (for those with bipolar affective

Thank you Caitlin, that actually addresses the problem, and I think that will
be a significant improvement. It would also be nice if I didn’t have to opt out

Hi Peter,

I can appreciate that the text on the page seems vague in terms of defining to
what list the opt-out will apply. We're going to edit the header on the page to
specifically say "Fundraising email". I hope that helps clarify for other
donors on multiple Wikimedia lists.

Thanks,

[Wikimedia-l] First French WikiConvention

2016-08-17 Thread Pierre-Yves Beaudouin
Dear all,

We are proud to announce that the first ever French-speaking Wikimedia
projects editors gathering will take place on August 19-20-21 in Paris,
France. Supported by WikiFranca and organized locally by Wikimedia France,
it's a "dream come true" as the first idea of this event goes back to 2012.

The 1st Francophone WikiConvention will take place in an eco-friendly
rehabilitated place called the Halle Pajol in the 18th arrondissement of
Paris.
Nearly 140 participants from 15 countries will be present. More than 40
proposals were made by the participants to create the program of this 2,5
day convention: gender-inclusive language on Wikipedia, paid contributions,
enriching articles about francophone Paralympic athletes, accessibility and
contribution in Africa ... A variety of themes that reflect the issues of
the francophone part of the Wikimedia movement.

This event was made possible by the support of the International
Organization of the Francophonie, the General Delegation for the French
language and the languages of France, L'Oréal Foundation for Women in
Science, Google France and of course the support of Wikimedia Wikimedia
France and Wikimedia Switzerland, as well as the Wikimedia Foundation. The
event is coordinated by WikiFranca, the organization of chapters,
francophone user groups and contributors of the Wikimedia movement.

It is meant to be then organized annually, if it proves to be successful !
Thank you to all Wikimedians who supported this event. And now, let's do it
!

That would at least be the by me expected behaviour.

I guess there's a more accurate description for the unsubscribe link

Hey Peter,

So you can unsubscribe from the fundraising and WMF newsletter emails via
that form and you will remain on lists such as Wikimedia-l.

Hope that helps.

2016-08-17 Thread Peter Southwood
That link says "Unsubscribe from Wikimedia Email" I am subscribed to a whole
lot of email from Wikimedia. I only want to unsubscribe from that specific one.
Problem? Vague and unspecific information and suggestion of possible
unspecified consequences. Unfortunately this is the kind of language I have
come to expect from Jimmy, and why I don't take anything he writes at face
value.
Cheers,
Peter

Every year he says it is the final email, so far that has not turned out to be
the case.
If I click on the unsubscribe link and it actually does what it claims, it will
be a serious inconvenience to me.

I hope nobody will mind, but I'll "Yay" with you too.

Thanks and kuddos to Natalia for bringing the idea up, leading the process,
and making it happen so quickly. And thanks to everyone who volunteered to
join bgc on top of their other volunteers position :)

[Wikimedia-l] FW: My final email

2016-08-17 Thread Peter Southwood
Is there any way to unsubscribe from these annoying and in my opinion
misleading spam mails purporting to come from Jimmy Wales without unsubscribing
from any other Wikimedia mailing lists or e-mail notifications?

Cheers,

Peter

Inside this email: fun fact from Wikipedia

Dear Peter,

When the clock strikes midnight, our email fundraiser will end — but we haven't
yet hit our goal. Please take one minute to renew your R 50

  donation to Wikipedia.

If all our past donors simply gave again today, we wouldn't have to worry about
fundraising for the rest of the year.

We’re a small nonprofit. We’re independent. We don’t run ads or sell services
to our readers. Though our size requires us to maintain the server space and
programming power of a top site, we are sustained by the support of our donors
who give an average of about R 175. This year, will you take one minute to keep
our work going?
