Could these videos be posted to YouTube?

In a recent talk , internet researcher
danah boyd makes the observation (around minute 15) that one of the
problems with conspiracy propagation in YouTube is that nobody generally
bothers to produce response videos to counteract disinformation narratives.
So people who use YouTube to get their "news" (<-- a HUGE number of younger
internet users) are never exposed to the truth around these subjects.

Many of us are aware that last year YouTube tried, somewhat
problematically, to link to Wikipedia articles in an attempt to counter
disinformation. But it would be even more useful to* insert factual
information into the YouTube ecosystem itself*. It seems to me that
VideoWiki tool gives our Movement a powerful new tool to counter
disinformation in a more timely manner.

Imagine a 4 minute video that pulls from multiple Wikipedia articles and
other WM data sources and which is designed to counter, say, a new viral
anti-vaxx video in a concise and engaging way. Before VideoWiki, this would
have been pretty labor-intensive to create. With VideoWiki, it seems like
we're close to being able to develop this kind of content in a much more
timely manner.

But to be effective, the video needs to reach the intended audience. The
best way to do that is to post it to YouTube, where that audience is. Hence
my opening question.

What do people think?

[Wikimedia-l] Roles & Responsibilities working group - Short update

I just wanted to share that the Role & Responsibilities Strategy Working
Group has just published a summary of perspectives on existing movement
governance and structures:

This document is based on c.25 in-depth interviews we in the working group
have performed with people with varied roles in and perspectives on the
movement as it stands. The aim has been for us as a group to understand
what different people in different parts of the movement think and feel
about movement structures as they stand. Just to be clear, we have not
weighted / prioritised the issues raised at present, just described them. :)

Your comments and views are very welcome on the Talk page - especially if
you have a view or perspective that you do not see represented in the
document. We will certainly read all those comments and incorporate them in
our thinking. However there will also be much more news and consultation
coming from the movement strategy core team in coming weeks, in the lead-up
to the Wikimedia summit.

[Wikimedia-l] Use of Wikimedia projects for anti-LGBT+ "humour"

It is sad to see that two well established Wikipedians, Barbara (WVS)
and SMcCandlish have misused Wikipedia Signpost to publish a "humour"
article which derides the use of nonbinary pronouns. It will be clear
for any reader that not only is this a joke in bad taste, but the
article is a misuse of the Wikipedia project and brand, to deride and
marginalise transgender, genderqueer and nonbinary people. A deletion
discussion has been created, everyone is welcome to express their
opinions, should they wish to read the Signpost op-ed.[1][4][5]

As part of the Wikipedia Visiting Scholars program, Barbara Page has
been granted special status at the University of Pittsburgh, and in
this capacity is seen to represent Wikimedia and Wikipedia, even if
not in a paid capacity. Given their coauthorship of the defamatory
essay, I do not see how it would be ethical for Page to retain any
recognition or relationship, and ask that a representative of Wiki
Education provide an official response.[2][6]

Stanton McCandlish is named as a WMF Tech Ambassador, and I have
requested on Meta that this formal recognition is immediately removed
by the WMF, as their views are directly antithetical to the WMF
supported Technical Spaces Code of Conduct.[3]

As Srishti says, community wishlist items tend to be very under-defined,
with open-ended and ambiguous deliverables, and exist in complex spaces.
These things are okay because the people handling them are professionals
who are trained specifically to distill open-ended projects into specific
deliverables, and because the contract with community wishlist items is
specifically *not* that the items will be done, but that the items will be
evaluated and responded to.

On the other hand, projects like GSoC are aimed at training and mentoring
people new to software development on best practices, coding paradigms, and
so on. The students need very well-defined, specific projects in order to
succeed, and wishlist items tend not to have these characteristics. Simply
funnelling wishlist items directly into GSoC would set up the participants
for failure.

So, some kind of refinement of the wishlist items is needed. Now, it
*is* possible
to distill certain wishlist items down into small, byte-sized, well-defined
GSoC projects, for sure. But that will take time, user research,
resourcing, etc. I think that's worth doing, but it is a resourcing
question, and we need to ask the question of what other work the product
folks will drop in order to make that happen.
