Unfortunately this kind of breakdown data isn't possible with SecurePoll -
that's by design, since the system anonymises votes as they're placed. So
there would be no way to know who exactly a "yes" or a "no" came from in
the data, and thus no way to get more granular data (at least as things are
set up right now).

Joe

Hello everyone,

First of all, many thanks to everyone who has expressed interest in joining
the Elections Committee. I really appreciate your willingness to contribute
to a successful election and addressing some of the broader questions that
have been identified. I'll get in touch with those who have emailed me

In this context, we are ideally looking for someone who is comfortable with
things like translation tags, nested templates, and other "advanced" markup
provided by MediaWiki. One of the tasks the committee has historically been
involved with has been to set up and organise the pages for the election on
Meta-Wiki, and this can get pretty complicated (as evidenced by the source
code
!).
This is a nice-to-have rather than a must-have, since it's only one of the
ways the committee supports these elections - but it's still very useful.

As for responsiveness, the timelines for these elections have historically
been tight, and so we really would like committee members who are able to
respond to emails in a timely way so we can make committee decisions
quickly.

You are justifiably not finding minutes, as the Elections Committee has
only met intermittently since the last election and maintained some of
their discussions over email outside of meetings (to the best of my
knowledge!). I am not able to offer extensive insights on the historical
practice around the Elections Committee, but I can revisit the process for
publishing minutes with the new committee. Supporting the committee was not
in my purview until this cycle. I will however echo the disappointment
about not having had the opportunity of meeting more frequently and share
more updates with the community. I look forward to working more closely
with the new committee once they are appointed.

The Elections Committee has had some initial conversation, and I expect
this topic will be at the top of the Election Committee's agenda once they
begin.

All but four of the existing committee members have indicated they are
interested in continuing their membership. I and the rest of the Foundation
staff supporting this work are more than happy to continue working with
them once the Election Committee is renewed by the Board Governance
Committee. The list is currently valid and will be updated once we'd had
the Board Governance Committee approve these new members.

That'd be a question for the Board Governance Committee, but my personal
understanding is that there hasn't been a need to change things for the
moment.

I understand that the timeline looks tight, and it is, I should however

Of course, there is room for improvement, and the Elections Committee will
be collecting this kind of feedback at the end of the cycle to improve

[Wikimedia-l] Wikimedia Foundation elections committee: Call for volunteers

2020-01-10 Thread Joe Sutherland
Hello everyone!

*Please disseminate this email to anyone who may be interested.*

As you are probably aware, the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees[1]
contains three community-selected seats which are voted in by the wider
Wikimedia community on a regular cycle. In 2020, we will be hosting another
one of these selection processes, which are coordinated by the Wikimedia
Foundation in collaboration with the Elections Committee[2].

We are seeking 2–3 new members for the committee to join us in time for the
first meetings in January 2020. Applicants will be vetted by Foundation
staff and ultimately approved by the Wikimedia Foundation Board Governance
Committee[3]. The term is three years, though the bulk of the work involved
occurs in the buildup to an election.

This role comes with the following responsibilities:

* Attending 3–4 meetings between January and April 2020 with the Foundation
and the rest of the committee
* Setting up the wiki pages for the board election (example from last cycle)
* Helping to mark pages for translation and potentially import translations
as required
* Working with the committee to fulfill its other responsibilities[4]

Ideally, you would have the following qualities:

* Fluency in English
* Experience with advanced wikitext markup
* Responsiveness to email outreach

We are particularly interested in those who come from a traditionally
under-represented background. If you are interested in volunteering for
this role, please let me know by *emailing me directly before January 19,
2020*.

Thank you in advance for your interest! Please let me know if you have
questions; I'm more likely to see these questions if you send them to me
directly.

best,
Joe

[Wikimedia-l] Community health metrics kit: Input needed!

2018-10-05 Thread Joe Sutherland
Hello everyone - apologies for cross-posting! *TL;DR*: We would like your
feedback on our Metrics Kit project. Please have a look and comment on
Meta-Wiki:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Community_health_initiative/Metrics_kit

The Wikimedia Foundation's Trust and Safety team, in collaboration with the
Community Health Initiative, is working on a Metrics Kit designed to
measure the relative "health"[1] of various communities that make up the
Wikimedia movement:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Community_health_initiative/Metrics_kit

The ultimate outcome will be a public suite of statistics and data looking
at various aspects of Wikimedia project communities. This could be used by
both community members to make decisions on their community direction and
Wikimedia Foundation staff to point anti-harassment tool development in the
right direction.

We have a set of metrics we are thinking about including in the kit,
ranging from the ratio of active users to active administrators,
administrator confidence levels, and off-wiki factors such as freedom to
participate. It's ambitious, and our methods of collecting such data will
vary.

Right now, we'd like to know:
* Which metrics make sense to collect? Which don't? What are we missing?
* Where would such a tool ideally be hosted? Where would you normally look
for statistics like these?
* We are aware of the overlap in scope between this and Wikistats <
https://stats.wikimedia.org/v2/#/all-projects> — how might these tools
coexist?

Your opinions will help to guide this project going forward. We'll be
reaching out at different stages of this project, so if you're interested
in direct messaging going forward, please feel free to indicate your
interest by signing up on the consultation page.

Looking forward to reading your thoughts.

[1] What do we mean by "health"? There is no standard definition of what
makes a Wikimedia community "healthy", but there are many indicators that
highlight where a wiki is doing well, and where it could improve. This
project aims to provide a variety of useful data points that will inform
community decisions that will benefit from objective data.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] [Wikimedia Announcements] Results of the 2017 Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees election

2017-10-16 Thread Joe Sutherland
A great question. And I have an easy answer!

I wrote up the feedback we received into a report that you can read here:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_elections/2017/Post_mortem/Report

The committee will be working on taking the feedback onboard ahead of the
next election cycle, which is (at the time of writing) the FDC elections in
2019.

[Wikimedia-l] Looking for your thoughts on the Wikimedia Foundation election cycle

2017-07-14 Thread Joe Sutherland
Hello all!

The Support and Safety team is looking for your thoughts on the recent
Wikimedia Foundation elections cycle - that is, the Board of Trustees
elections in April/May, and the Funds Dissemination Committee meeting in
May/June.

What do you think went well, and what do you think could have gone better?

I'd love your thoughts, either on this email thread or on the dedicated
Meta-Wiki page:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_elections/2017/Post_mortem

Feel free to email me privately if you'd like to.

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts, good or bad. :)

best,
Joe

[Wikimedia-l] [Wikimedia Announcements] Start of the 2017 Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees elections

2017-04-07 Thread Joe Sutherland

Please accept our apologies for cross-posting this message.

On behalf of the Wikimedia Foundation Board Elections Committee, I am pleased
to announce that self-nominations are now being accepted for the 2017 Wikimedia
Foundation Board of Trustees Elections.[1]

The Board of Trustees (Board) is the decision-making body that is ultimately responsible
for the long-term sustainability of the Wikimedia Foundation,[2] so we value wide input
into its selection. More information about this role can be found at
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_elections/2017/Board_of_Trustees>.
Please read the letter from the Board of Trustees calling for candidates here:

The candidacy submission phase will last from April 7 (00:00 UTC) to April 20 (23:59
UTC) and occurring on Meta-Wiki at
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_elections/2017/Board_of_Trustees/Candidates>

We will also be accepting questions to ask the candidates from April 7 to April 20.
You can submit your questions on Meta-Wiki at
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_elections/2017/Board_of_Trustees/Questions>

Once the questions submission period has ended on April 20, the Elections
Committee will then collate the questions for the candidates to respond to
beginning on April 21.

The goal of this process is to fill the three community-selected seats on the
Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees. The election results will be used by
the Board itself to select its new members.

The full schedule for the Board elections is as follows. All dates are
inclusive, that is, from the beginning of the first day (UTC) to the end of the
last.

* April 7 (00:00 UTC) - April 20 (23:59 UTC): Board nominations
* April 7 - April 20: Board candidates questions submission period
* April 21 - April 30: Board candidates answer questions
* May 1 - May 14: Board voting period
* May 15-19: Board vote checking
* May 20: Board result announcement goal

In addition to the Board elections, we will also soon be holding elections for
the following roles:

* Funds Dissemination Committee (FDC)
** There are five positions being filled. More information about this election can be
found at
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_elections/2017/Funds_Dissemination_Committee>.

* Funds Dissemination Committee Ombudsperson (Ombuds)
** One position is being filled.  More information about this election can be found
at
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_elections/2017/Funds_Dissemination_Committee_Ombudsperson>.

Please note that this year the Board of Trustees elections will be held before
the FDC and Ombuds elections. Candidates who are not elected to the Board are
explicitly permitted and encouraged to submit themselves as candidates to the
FDC or Ombuds positions after the results of the Board elections are announced.

More information on this year's elections can be found at
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_elections/2017>.

Please feel free to post a note about the election on your project's village pump.
Any questions related to the election can be posted on the talk page on Meta, or sent
to the election committee's mailing list, .

On behalf of the Election Committee,
Katie Chan, Chair, Board Election Committee
Joe Sutherland, Community Advocate, Wikimedia Foundation

This is now underway, and will be for the next 45 minutes or so!

If you can't (or couldn't) make it, feel free to chip into the ongoing
discussion on metawiki: https://meta.wikimedia.org/

[Wikimedia-l] Creative Commons 4.0 IRC office hour - October 19, 14:00 UTC

2016-10-14 Thread Joe Sutherland
Hello,

As you might already be aware, the Wikimedia Foundation is currently
consulting the community on a potential upgrade to Creative Commons
Attribution ShareAlike 4.0 International as the default license in the
Wikimedia Terms of Use. You can learn more about the license and join the
discussion on Meta-Wiki:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Terms_of_use/Creative_Commons_4.0

As part of this consultation, we are hosting an office hour on IRC, in the
#wikimedia-office channel, from 14:00–15:00 UTC on Wednesday, October 19.
It will be staffed by several attorneys in the Foundation's Legal Team to
discuss the license and other questions in the discussion. You can learn
more about joining the IRC office hour here:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/IRC_office_hours

To propose discussion topics ahead of time, feel free to add them here:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Terms_of_use/Creative_Commons_4.0/IRC_office_hour

If you have any questions or comments about the license, please do join the
discussion! We hope to see you there.

[Wikimedia-l] New Readers research presentation

2016-09-15 Thread Joe Sutherland
Hello all!

Please join us on September 28 at 16:00 UTC to review the research findings
of the New Readers project <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/New_Readers>!
This 1.5 hour presentation will share findings from user research in
Mexico, India, and Nigeria.

Why should you come?

   - India, Nigeria, and Mexico represent more than 1.5 billion people,
more than 20% of the world
   - Current Wikipedia awareness and usage in these countries is low – less
than 25% of people in Nigeria and India have even heard of Wikipedia
   - In pursuit of the Wikimedia vision to make knowledge accessible to
“every single human being”, we aim to better understand users around the
world and meet their real needs

Specifically, we will discuss:

   - Information seeking habits
   - Internet use, devices, and general knowledge patterns
   - Wikipedia awareness and usage
   - User personas developed from findings
   - Potential next steps and opportunities to better serve New Readers in
   Asia, Africa, and Latin America

More details on the project can be found on Meta-Wiki.[1]

Join us on September 28 at 9am PDT / 4pm UTC / 9:30pm IST through our
YouTube stream[2] or with conferencing app BlueJeans.[3]

best,
Joe Sutherland

[Wikimedia-l] Wikipedia Day events: Share your photos!

2016-01-29 Thread Joe Sutherland
Hello all,

It's now two weeks since Wikipedia Day, marking a global celebration of the
birth of the Wikimedia movement fifteen years ago. Almost 150 events,
parties and gatherings were listed on the Wikipedia 15 page on Meta
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_15> to take place over the
weekend. How did they go?

We'd love to see your photos and outcomes from your events. For this, I've
created a page on Meta: Wikipedia 15/Scrapbook
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_15/Scrapbook>. Feel free to add
pictures, edit-a-thon outputs, and so on.

We're excited to see what you've all been up to!

best,
Joe

I've created a Phabricator task for this at

this there, add your thoughts, etc.
