[Wikimedia-l] Re: Announcing an academic conference on Wikipedia translation

2021-06-02 Thread Roman Bustria Jr.
Hi Mark,

I strongly suggest that the organizers request a budgetary support through
a WMF grant while there is still ample time before the event.

While I understand that this could be a concern if it was a large fee,
it works out to about $13 USD/11 Euros for observer status, and double that
for presenter status. This does not sound outrageous; it pays for the
equipment, software, staffing, technical support, and bandwidth, as well as
the maintenance and storage of presentation materials. Even online
conferences have some costs, and those costs are often not being absorbed
by sponsors to the extent that they have been in the past.

It may be worthwhile for the WMF to agree to take a certain number of
slots and pay for them, and then allot them to people with a significant
 history of translation on our projects on a first come/first served basis;
honestly, they could support the registration fees for 25 editors for less
than 500 USD. That's a bargain, especially if they want to shift the focus
 to translation into smaller projects.

I hope that the conference goes well.

[Wikimedia-l] Wikimedia Foundation proposal to call ourselves as the Wikipedia Network, Wikipedia Movement or simply Wiki

2020-06-21 Thread Roman Bustria Jr.
Hi Folks,

There is a proposal initiated by the Wikimedia Foundation to call ourselves
the "Wikipedia Network", "Wikipedia Movement" or simply "Wiki".

I strongly suggest that the Foundation should allocate time & resources
with the Wikimedia community fully involved in *identifying and resolving
the real problem *that brought the idea of creating the brands department.
These include opening communication channels like what was done in our
strategy 2030 process to ask recommendations on how we strengthen the
Wikimedia identity (like having online and offline promotion of the
"Wikimedia" identity)

I was puzzled how this Brand project was not fully integrated in the 2017
and 2018-2020 Movement Strategy Process.

But hey, we can do a counter proposal and offer a better and more
acceptable solution to this.

As shared by the Florence in the other mailing list:

Wikipedia Asian Month is an annual Wikipedia contest focused on the
promotion of Asian content on various language-specific Wikipedias. Each
participating community runs a month-long online edit-a-thon every November
on their language's Wikipedia to create new content or improve existing
articles about Asian topics apart from their own country. Participation is
not limited to Asian communities.

As part of the friendship and cultural exchange of the Wikipedia Asian
Community, participants who create at least four articles will receive a
special Wikipedia Postcard from another participating community.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] WikiIndaba conference announcement

2019-07-17 Thread Roman Bustria Jr.
Hi Bobby,

Congratulations to the host and for those behind for ensuring WikiIndaba
would be a continuous annual event!

We are happy that the community of Africa is growing and improving its
footprint in the Wikimedia movement.

Like this, WikiArabia, Iberocoop and CEE, we hope that WMF seriously
consider other regions like ESEAP, which were delisted from having a
regular conference funding this year will be granted next year.

Though ESEAP will host Wikimania next year, we would desire to have a
dedicated conference which would allow us to focus our attention to our
region.

2019-03-06 Thread Roman Bustria Jr.
Congratulations to the new events team!

Though the East and Southeast Asia and Pacific (Eseap) Wikimedia Community
was disheartened by its exclusion in the conference grants program, we are
looking forward for better collaboration this time. We have a lineup of
regional events and programmes in place and we hope the temporary halt will
lifted soon.

We are still waiting for the green light from the movement strategy
discussions on resource allocation, isn't it?
