That last line worries me a bit. Are all photos credited to NASA,
 irrespective of who uploaded it?
 OR
Are all photos of the Day by NASA, thereby giving others no chance for a
 front page visit?

I think they mixed up the credits on this app and their NASA app: Image
credit on the Picture of the Day webpage. Image updates are subject to the
availability of the Wikimedia Commons' Image of the Day RSS feed and
 associated images.
 https://market.android.com/details?id=com.practicalapps.android.wallpaper.nasa

I went ahead and emailed the address on the developer's website to ask for
 the correction. Good catch, Srikanth!

A few of the interesting articles written about the Dam were by Major

edition can be found here.[1] The edition contains chapters on the
Diversion of the Periyar and The Periyar Tunnel followed by discussion
and correspondences on the same. I really wish we did more stuff like this
in 2011, but that is a different discussion.

Interestingly, these articles - dated to 1897 (!!!) are pay-walled. Each
of the article I mentioned above costs GBP 18!

Help is needed on trying to get these articles so that they can inform
the Wikipedia article now under Collaboration of the Month. I am hoping to
write to the UK Wikimedia Chapter and the Institution of Civil Engineers,

possibility of getting a copy otherwise?

Android still doesn't support Indic rendering, it's only Samsung Ace which
supports, but rest don't. So, something to be done from the developers.
Hope, soon this would be solved in the forthcoming versions of Androids.

Often, it helps to have an outsider perspective. We in the Pune community
met Torey to day and are of the opinion that the Foundation wants someone
from their side to provide an impartial outsider's view and also to explore
ways ahead in addition to finding out whats going on and what had happened.

Obviously, her assignment is just one of a number of initiatives that are
underway to improve/get feedback regarding the IEP fiasco.

[Wikimediaindia-l] Karthik Nadar is in the banners!

2011-12-02 Thread Sue Gardner
Hey folks,

I just saw that Indian editor Karthik Nadar is in the banners today,
with a beautiful appeal. Go, India!

https://wikimediafoundation.org/w/index.php?title=L11_1202_KN/en/USutm_source=B11_1202_Karthik2utm_medium=sitenoticeutm_campaign=C11_1202_DayvMat_USlanguage=enuselang=encountry=USreferrer=http%3A%2F%2Fen.wikipedia.org%2Fwiki%2FMain_Page

Thanks,
Sue

Here's the text:

From Wikipedia author Karthik Nadar

On the day a terrorist attack ripped through the heart of my city,
Wikipedia changed my life.

The 2011 bombings in Mumbai made international headlines, but at the
moment the crisis struck, there was no straightforward information
about what had happened.

I knew I couldn’t be the only one looking for answers. So I went out
to take photos, uploaded a map I pasted together, and made sure the
Wikipedia article on the incident would help people make sense of the
chaos.

Since then, I’ve made thousands of edits to Wikipedia articles. My
experience that day on Wikipedia made my passion for photojournalism
clear, and I’ve followed that path ever since.

I felt so grateful for Wikipedia, and when I learned how it stays
online, I donated 250 rupees to do my part. Will you make a donation
to keep this valuable resource available around the world?

Wikipedia enables us to share the world. With 470 million different
visitors every month, it’s revolutionized the way we consume and
spread information -- sometimes even down to the moment it happens.

And it does it all for free -- with zero ads, under 1,000 servers and
fewer than 100 staff.

That’s amazing. Just look at Google or Facebook. They have hundreds of
thousands of servers and tens of thousands of staff.

It’s no wonder Wikipedia is the 5th most popular and most visited site
online. And it’s also no wonder why they need support every year from
people like me and you.

Will you pitch in $5, $20, $50 or whatever you think Wikipedia is worth to you?

Thanks,

Karthik Nadar

Awesome! Thanks, Santhosh for creating and Ashwin for forwarding.

1. Compare list with the articles in Wikipedia for Schools version, to see

It was really nice to meet you again and have some discussions.

I am not sure what is the context you are referring in those lines in

All of us mentioned are India chapter members. Ashwin is the first

One of the members wanted anonymity that you maintained during last

Thanks Sue, a quick question, forgive me if this thing has already been
taken to your consideration.
many Indians having no credit cards want to donate to WMF, is that possible
for the technical team to add Netbanking and Debit card payment gateway for
Indian banks. Secondly if this is not possible for this year is that
possible to inform the non credit card holders that they can possible pay
the Wikimedia India Chapter on behalf of WMF and the chapter can transfer
the funds later to the foundation.

One more thing, it seems, even the fundraising team did not plan INR for
2011 and INR happened accidentally when their payments partner seem to
support it. So we cannot expect everything smooth on the first time which
was not even planned. (Debit cards, Netbanking, not using VBV/MSC etc). I
am hopeful that fundraiser team is working on it actively and might help
out solve those, may be from next year we will have a completely supported
fundraiser.

Subha,

Its simple. Chapter CANNOT accept any payment(or claim that it can accept)
*on behalf* without a formal agreement. Chapter cannot enter into formal
agreement due to FCRA laws. There is no point in talking about this in 11th
hour, there was a chance in May 2011, chapter worked towards it, but was
not able to beat the legal hurdles, we just need to wait one more year.

Oh, wasn't aware of it, yes I do understand the legal procedure and
country wise legal system is the main hurdle here, so hope the best for the
next year.

[Wikimediaindia-l] New site for easy navigation of Wikipedia

2011-12-02 Thread Subhashish Panigrahi
Hi All,

A new prototype site http://wikilive.in/ has been developed by an Indian
student Deepanshu Mehndiratta, a second year engineering student at
BITS-Pilani KK Birla Goa Campus has come up with a real time live search
srvice for Wikipedia. As of now it works only for English Wikipedia
(Probably the team might not be aware of the other language Wikipedias, esp
Indic Wikipedias), but it has potentials to be a useful tool, especially
live preview of multiple pages from Wikipedia at a time without opening
them in multiple windows. In fact if you are logged in to Wikipedia then
it'll be just like opening any Wikipedia page under one header. My personal
opinion about this site is good overall though there are many more features
could be added. First of all, the no of article names it shows is just 5/6
(which is very less). Hope, the developers get some feedback from
Wikipedians to enhance their site.

 Hi,

I am Deepak Sapkale, 27 year old software engineer, currently working at L
T Infotech. I had attended Wiki Conference India 2011 and was really inspired
to create new language which is spoken in my native town. The language is
called Ahirani . The script of Ahirani is Devanagari which used for Hindi
 and Marathi languages.

Please advise me, how can I proceed with this one.

 Through shadow,
 To the edge of night
Until the stars are all alight

2011-12-02 Thread Shiju Alex
Ahrinai is one of the languages of Khandeshi languages
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Khandeshi_languagesgroup.

I assume Ahirani language is eligible for a test wiki in Wikimedia
incubatorhttp://incubator.wikimedia.org.
It has valid ISO code also. May be Gerard or some one else from LC can
provide more details.

Please follow the instructions documented by Kundan in the last few slides
of this
PDFhttp://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:State_of_wikimedia_Communities_of_India_2011_November.pdfto
create a test wiki in Wikimedia incubator.
