An impressive total of 68 students, primarily consisting of 2nd and 3rd year engg students attended this workshop. The Principal of the college, Dr K Ramaswamy gave a short talk and welcomed the participants and the speaker. The session started off with a small introduction on what Wikipedia is and the core values and philosophies behind Wikipedia, how it is edited by millions of people across the world and how all the content on the site is completely free. The 5 pillars of Wikipedia i.e the fundamental principles by which Wiki operates on were also explained. The students were initially a little hesitant to interact but soon were asking pertinent and valid questions about the topic. Once the basics were covered, a short presentation on approaching Wikipedia as a reader was held. Editing of wikipedia was explained next followed by a hands-on session where the students were taught the basics of editing Wikipedia. The students were very responsive to this session. Small prizes like Wiki stickers were given out for mini-contests that were held during this session. A vast majority of the students seemed to quickly understand the intuitive UI especially considering that they were all familiar with formatting in MS Word. The students made minor edits to articles as the session drew to a close. A google group has been setup for future correspondance. The students along with the help of the faculty coordinators who were present said they will work on improving the Sivakasi wiki page. The feedback forms (i will collate the data from here and post it shortly) were collected and few photos from the event were taken. I'll post the pics on the wiki page for the academy soon as i don't have the camera with me currently. Brochures were handed out to all the participants. Judging by the feedback received and the response from the students, i'd say the event was a success. I'd like to thank Ms Nitika Tandon, Mr Naveen PF and Mr Arjuna Rao Chavala for their help. This was my first Wiki Academy and i really profited from their help. Conducting the academy solo was quite a challenging but rewarding experience. Also as a footnote i'd like to point that the session was delayed because the Wiki editor kept crashing IE 6. Sadly, the computers in the lab had no other browsers apart from IE 6. This wasn't a roadblock i expected and i think should be added to the list of preparations in this page. Oi, This is a quick update on the Tiruchirappalli front. 1. MoU. The final MoU has been drafted [I think] and Naveen, Arjuna and Tinu of the Chapter have agreed to sign it. 2. Participants. Suraj Kumar, of Trichy has agreed help out. I have forwarded his email address to Tinu, Naveen and Nitika. [Thank you Shrini for your help]. 3. Accommodation. I had sent across a requirement for accommodation for three people. I'm in, Tinu has indicated that he or someone from the Chapter will join, and there is Suraj. Since, Suraj is a local [I don't know how far he lives from the Institute], we may try for one more participant? 4. Wikipedia badge/pin for the VOLUNTEERS. I was given a suggestion by a UK Wikipedian [I'm on friendly terms with some of them] to help identify the Volunteers. I'm willing to pay for a bunch of them if needed. We were happy to move things along a bit by considering to expedite our approval. The full localisation was not done but promises were made and are kept to make sure that the Marathi localisation of MediaWiki will be in and remain in good shape. We also pushed WMF ops to do a good job for the Marathi Wikisource and I am really happy that Sam Reed helped us out. All in all we are pleased and we hope that all issues that need to be resolved for future projects will be resolved quickly and, that we consequently will have many more projects starts like the one of the Marathi Wikisource. *CS Monitor : Wikipedia’s cultural mission in India* http://www.csmonitor.com/World/Global-News/2012/0202/Wikipedia-s-cultural-mission-in-India /After moving to big cities, some preserve their culture through Wikipedia entries written in regional languages. When *Subhashish Panigrahi* moved to Bangalore, far from his hometown in Odisha in eastern India, it was Wikipedia that helped him keep in touch with his roots. He started writing articles on the arts, literature, food, and even tourist attractions in his home region on Odia Wikipedia, “odia” being the local language. Ditto for *Bala Sundara Raman*, from a southern Indian town, and his contribution to Tamil Wikipedia. Mr. Panigrahi and Mr. Raman are a small part of a community of Indian “Wikipedians” who are using the website to document their culture. As they live in cities and work at jobs that require them to speak English, Wikipedia keeps them connected to their first language. Wikipedians, all volunteers, also work to spread technical and scientific knowledge beyond the English-savvy minority of Internet users in India. Panigrahi recently joined the Wikimedia Foundation in New Delhi, the first Wikipedia office outside the United States, set up with the aim of increasing the quality and quantity of regional language content. “This is much better than blogging,” says Panigrahi. “Everything is teamwork, and I have been able to encourage other young Odias to pitch in with their efforts.”/ Regards Tinu Cherian pr...@wikimedia.in http://wiki.wikimedia.in/In_the_news Important Note : Non-commercial reproduction for informative purposes only. Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] [WMIN-Members] New Wikimedia India Portals
This is an awesome development. Real infrastructure building. All these make for ease of use of Indian wikis especially for a polyglot people like we are. It is obvious that a whole lot of people came together and developed this. it has happened very smoothly too. None of the fireworks we have seen in some of our larger collaborations. Awarding barnstars seems too trivial an award here. On behalf of all of us, I would like to offer our heartfelt thanks : - Wikimedia CH / Switzerland Chapter and Manuel Schneider - Rajesh K Odayanchal - Jyothis E - Anirudh, Noopur Raval, Surya, Radhakrishna, Omshivaprakash, Debanjan, Saroj, Swaroop, Abhishek Suryawanshi and any others who have helped in translations . - Tanvir Rahman , Tinu Cherian and Arun Ram. - Arjuna Rao C, and everyone at Wikimedia India Chapter. - Anyone else inadvertantly left out but who contributed - Last but not least, our hardworking secretary, Naveen. May I request Naveen to forward this post to those not on this list so that they realise that the community really appreciates the hard work put in. This imho should be one of the positive trends celebrated in next WikiConference like we mentioned Narayam in the last one. Finally, those like Arun, who may desire a spot of liquid cheer ;), in addition to the thanks, are free to seek me out and drop in any evening. Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] [WMIN-Members] New Wikimedia India Portals
Hi all, On behalf of the Wikimedia India chapter, I would like to sincerely thank everyone who helped this initiative. The job is not complete and the portals still need lots of tweaking and improvements. If the efforts of Naveen are left unmentioned, it would be very unfair. The Wikimedia Project Gateways is essentially the brain child and one of the dream projects of our Secretary, Naveen Francis. I am sure he wouldn't allow me to tell it here if asked, but I have to confess that Naveen had even invested lots of his personal money in obtaining the domains too. His efforts in getting this work done is really applaudable. Thank you, Naveen everyone. We sincerely hope that you will find these portals useful and informative.
