Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] New community nominations in place of absent invitees welcome
Ravi, Going by what Asaf disclosed to me on an email off the list, the event was organized on these dates despite the knowledge of this major festival. I fail to see why it was done so in such hurried manner, whatever is the reasoning with respect to WMF travel schedule. Further, I was told that the dates were based on the communication from the EC (prior to the resignations). So, I checked with the former EC members who helped in communicating the possible dates and I was told that they were requested to choose between either the last week of September or the first week of October. They chose the latter as Sunil (of CIS) wasn't available for the former. There actually weren't other options based on what I'm being informed. I just don't understand why it is being pushed hastily like this. If it really is a Community Consultation and stands to be as important as it is made out to be, is it not fair to give it some time to get the required fair participation? Does this need to be done on a festival weekend when most community members will not be able to participate? My repeated requests for more transparency into all this by also making the conversations streamed online or making it available for others to participate isn't being heard at all, which is quite disappointing. Hi All, So far as I am aware, dates were advertised quite long ago and well before some of the communities started discussing it (some communities don't seem to have discussed) on their village pumps. If the dates were known already and we all plan our holidays and festivals little bit in advance, I am surprised to see this discussion revolving around dates and time at this stage. If we ever had any problem with dates or lack of time, we should have raised our concerns 3 weeks ago. I also remember discussing it while in wikimania that such consultation was being planned for the (then) next month, which meant September, in fact we have got one extra week. Can we please not complain about the things that missed to realise then and focus on what needs discussing on those two days? Let us discuss the issues our individual communities want the representatives to carry with them and channelise our energy in that direction. Hoi, At Wikimania in London I discussed how nice it would be to include all the Indian calendars and by implication all the festivals past present and future. From it I understand that there is no universal knowledge of such calendars and festivals. One of the things that I gleaned from the conversation is that this is rather complicated, certainly a lot of work and it needs involvement from people who care about this subject. When such a project is adopted by people from India, we have this data available and we are more likely not to find such planning issues. Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] New community nominations in place of absent invitees welcome
Hoi, Actually this discussion was firmly outside of any other consideration. It had nothing to do with CIS nor the Indian chapter. Having to say this, says something as well. Apparently there must be a relation of everyone between either CIS or the Indian chapter. I am a Wikimedian, I am most active in Wikidata and I cooperate happily with anyone who is happy to do his or her part. As to Indian calendars, I have added a substantial amount of data in Wikidata related to this subject [1]. This was the reason why I was included in the conversation in the first place. I have added a lot of data about many subjects related to India. It is there for whoever wants it. I do not care if they align themselves with whatever organisations, I do not care where they are from, I do not care what language they use. What I do care for is that the data is available and is fit for sharing in a comprehensible manner. Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] New community nominations in place of absent invitees welcome
Dear Hari Prasad, Aren't festivals already listed on calendar? I have a couple of calendars here in UK, which shows all the festivals for the whole year, one till October this year (as that is when our Gujarati year ends) and another till 31st December. I can easily check on which date what festival falls. None of the festivals have ever come as surprise to me. When I lived in India, I still had such calendars. Not sure whether other parts of India has a different system. So yes, I plan my festivals in advance, by making myself aware of them.
