[WikimediaIndia-l] Re: CIS-A2K Scholarships for Indic Wikimedians

2024-05-15 Thread Satdeep Gill
Oh, this is such a lovely news! This is a worthy investment. Congratulations to the selected participants. I am sure it will be a great experience. Do make sure seek advice on submitting a good visa application. I am sure CIS is already thinking about that.I would recommend some orientation for first-time Wikimania attendees, similar to the one for Wikimedia Summit organised earlier this year. It would be valuable even if it’s an online conversation.Regards Satdeep GillOn 15 May 2024, at 6:54 PM, Neechal Karan wrote:Congratulations for the recipients. 2021-11-30 Thread Satdeep Gill
Hello everyone,

The first iteration of the Share Your Struggle campaign ran from 15 August
2021 and ran until 15 September, and gathered 600+ images

 and 25+ videos

from
30+ participants. Apart from a CentralNotice banner across Wikimedia
platforms, focused outreach efforts helped to engage professional
photographers, photojournalists and social activist organizations such as Lok
Sangharsh Morcha

 and Narmada Navnirman Abhiyan

.

Five of the top ten images are related to the 2020-2021 Indian farmers’
protest
,
which has been going on for over one year at various borders of the
national capital, Delhi. Three images are related to the COVID-19 pandemic
and the lockdown .
Three photographers (JK Photography, Ravan Khosa and TAPAS KUMAR HALDER)
have two photographs each in the top ten images.

[Wikimediaindia-l] Extending Share Your Struggle until 15 September 2021

2021-09-01 Thread Satdeep Gill
Sat shri akal everyone,

The *first Share Your Struggle* photography competition has been running
since 15 August 2021 and we have received around 300 images so far
.
We are *extending the campaign until 15 September 2021*, mainly to allow a
few potential partners to be able to upload their images.

We do recognize that *Wiki Loves Monuments (WLM) has started today* and we
hope it is a huge success as it has been in the previous years.

We are not going to actively promote Share Your Struggle via CentralNotice
or other community channels to avoid any conflict with WLM.

[Wikimediaindia-l] Launching "Share Your Struggle 2021" (15 August 2021 - 31st August 2021)

2021-08-15 Thread Satdeep Gill
Hello everyone,

Today India celebrates 75 years of independence from British rule but this
date also reminds us of the partition and its aftermath. To both celebrate
and commemorate this occasion, we are excited to launch a new photography
competition named Share Your Struggle:

*

The first iteration of Share Your Struggle will run from *15 August 2021 to
31st August 2021*. For this pilot, the scope is limited to images and
videos from India. The goal of the project is to improve coverage of free
usable media files related to various struggles, such as, natural disasters
, health crises such
as COVID-19
pandemic , social movements
, conflict-torn areas, and
any other humanitarian crises
. The goal is not only
to document crises, but also humanitarian efforts and acts of kindness that
happen during such crises. The scope of the project includes *images* and
*video* files.

Make sure to read the *Rules and FAQ
*
for the competition before uploading any images or videos. We also suggest
you read *"Photographs of identifiable people
"*
and *"Exif "* pages on
Wikimedia Commons..

We are still looking for more people to join the team of volunteers

to help organize this event now and hopefully in the future as well. If you
are interested to join, feel free to sign up on this form

.

For any questions or feedback, feel free to write to us at
*shareyourstruggle2...@gmail.com
.*

[Wikimediaindia-l] Re: Do we have a Tibetan Wikimedia Community in India?

2021-08-09 Thread Satdeep Gill
Hi Ashwin,

This has been something of a concern to me as well. I even learnt the
Tibetan alphabet at one point in my life. That aside, looking at the
activity at Tibetan Wikipedia, there doesn't seem to be anything but
certain IP edits and some users creating random pages in English. So, I
think it would be safe to assume that there isn't any Tibetan Wikimedia
community in India right now.

Looking at the number of manuscripts that are there in Tibetan and have
been carefully preserved at various monasteries, I believe digitizing those
manuscripts and creating a Tibetan Wikisource might be a great first step
of engagement with the community. I see that thousands of manuscripts in
Tibetan have been scanned by various organizations such as the Buddhist
Digital Resource Center
.

If good enough input methods are available to type Tibetan, then I think
transcribing these texts on Wikisource can be really useful to the Tibetan
community. This is very different from trying to build a Wikipedia.
Wikipedia needs to be updated every now and then but on Wikisource, once a
text has been transcribed and validated, It would remain useful forever
with a scope for improvement such as annotations but the text in itself
will have its value, forever.

Best
Satdeep

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Wiki Loves Food 2021 in India

2021-02-23 Thread Satdeep Gill
This is amazing. Full credit to West Bengal Wikimedians for taking
initiative to regularly organize WLM for the past few years and now taking
charge of other photography competitions that haven't been organized in a
while.

Perhaps, Wiki Loves Earth can be organized sometime in the future as well.

I am definitely looking forward to WLF for now.

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Happy Birthday Wikipedia: 20th anniversary: With 20 Wikipedia Facts and Anecdotes (please add to this list)

2021-01-16 Thread Satdeep Gill
Thank you for sharing these interesting anecdotes and facts Tito.

Let me share another anecdote:

11.* Punjabi Wikipedia* (pa.wikipedia.org) and *Odia Wikipedia* (
or.wikipedia.org) were launched on 3 June *2002 *while *Hindi Wikipedia* (
hi.wikipedia.org), a much larger language, was launched almost a year later
on 11 July *2003*. The first articles on Punjabi Wikipedia were not created
until 2004 though. There must be more to this story. Does anyone know it?

Lovely pictures! Thanks for sharing Bodhi.

Interestingly, this year's winner (no. 1) has been contributing to Commons
only during WLM for the past 4-5 years.

Perhaps a small interview can be conducted with them! Maybe we can learn on
how to keep them engaged even before and after WLM.

[Wikimediaindia-l] GLAM-wiki contractor opportunity at Wikimedia Foundation

2020-07-23 Thread Satdeep Gill
Hello,

The Wikimedia Foundation <https://wikimediafoundation.org/> is looking for
a part-time temporary contractor to work remotely for 20 hours a week from
August or September until June 2021. The contractor will support movement
allies, affiliates, and organizers interested in bringing high impact
collections to Wikimedia projects. The hourly rate is up to $55 (USD).

We’d like you to do these things:

   -

Mentor a cohort of cultural institutions making large content
contributions to develop shared practices for Structured Data on Commons,
particularly for captions and copyright statements.
   -

Take part in monthly office hours for the wider Wikimedia-GLAM community.
   -

Analyze and document innovations and workflows, in order to inform and
   inspire Wikimedia communities and staff.
   -

Actively monitor communications to support the Wikimedia-GLAM community
to stay in touch, network, document, and exchange practices.
   -

Facilitate information sharing and product alignment with volunteers
maintaining software for GLAM-Wiki projects, such as OpenRefine, pywikibot,
   and Pattypan.

We’re looking for someone with these skills:

   -

A practical understanding of using linked open data and broad open
platforms for sharing collections, including active use of Wikidata and/or
   Wikimedia Commons.
   -

Comfortable wrangling data with some experience scripting and using
   command line tools.
   -

A good track record of promoting digital skills development or shared
practices through social media, written case studies, conference
   presentations, and/or workshop facilitation.
   -

Comfort working with product teams and supporting products in an open,
networked ecosystem, through documentation and community consultation.
   -

Experience working with a distributed and remote team with people of
   diverse skill sets and backgrounds.
   -

   Strong written and spoken English.

And it would be even more awesome if you have:

   -

Proficiency in languages other than English.
   -

An existing network of collaborators and contacts in international open
knowledge, cultural heritage communities, or in the Wikimedia community.

   -

Experience working with communities that are not based in Europe or
   North America.

Please send a cover letter and CV or LinkedIn profile to g...@wikimedia.org
by Friday 7 August.

Heartfelt congratulations to both of you, Suswetha and Nitesh.

I believe both of you will help in taking Project Tiger 2.0 to the next
level after a brilliant first iteration under the leadership of Ravi and

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Wiki Loves Monument 2019 India

2019-08-17 Thread Satdeep Gill
Ananya and West Bengal Wikimedians UG,

This is so exciting. I really appreciate that the West Bengal Wikimedia UG
is doing WLM in India this year as well. I am hoping this will year will be
even better. I see a lot of work around documenting monuments on Wikidata
and that is really commendable.

Also, please consider using ISA tool <https://tools.wmflabs.org/isa/> after
the contest (maybe a follow up campaign) to add depicts to all the images
because most of the images uploaded during such contests don't have useful
titles or descriptions.

Hello Indic Wikimedians,

I am delighted to share a survey that will help us in the building a

Wiki Loves Monuments type Commons contest, Wikisource Proofreading Contest,
Wikidata labelathons, 1lib1ref campaigns etc.), we would like to hear from

Hi everyone,

I am excited to share with all of you that User:Varinder Naturaphile
previously known as User:ਵਰਿੰਦਰ ਸ਼ਰਮਾ has officially launched Wiki Loves
Wild Flowers today, 22 May 2019 which is the International Day for
Biological Diversity.[1]

Varinder is a member of the Faridkot District Biodiversity Committee and a
Coordinator for documentation of flora and fauna. I am glad that his
expertise will help in including quality content on our platforms. This
will range from adding images to Commons to add local names in Wikidata and
possibly create new Wikipedia articles.

Over the next few months, he will be working on the initial list of 124
different species of wild flowers found in the Punjab region as a pilot.

Your feedback will be deeply appreciated.

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Train the trainer 2019

2019-03-08 Thread Satdeep Gill
I really like the idea of a regional event in Assam soon as the community
has started gaining momentum.

To VVIT Wikiconnect, I know you folks will organize a good event. Best
wishes from my side.

To CIS, this is a really nice initiative to involve communities in
organizing national events and building capacity but I would also like to
reiterate what Ravi said on the event's talk page. To engage more
communities in the future in such processes, it would be important to have
an incentive, such as 2 extra participants, similar to local participation
during Project Tiger consultation 2019.

That aside, collaborating with different communities each time is a good
practice.

[Wikimediaindia-l] Leaving the New Readers

2018-12-11 Thread Satdeep Gill
Hi all,

It has been a pleasure for me to have collaborated with many of you as I
have been working with the New Readers program for over a year as Community
Outreach Coordinator (India) but now, I have joined the Community Programs
team at the Wikimedia Foundation as Program Officer, GLAM and
Underrepresented Knowledge.

Some of you might already know that starting October 2018, we kicked
off Community
Marketing Experiments
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/New_Readers/Community_Marketing_Experiments>
that I was leading with guidance from Anne Gomez and Zack McCune. Both the
teams have agreed upon a transition plan so that the work at CMEs can be
finished, and I will be finishing the marketing experiments and some other
projects for the New Readers through mid-January.

In case you have any queries about the New Readers program, feel free to
contact Anne Gomez, Senior Program Manager (ago...@wikimedia.org).

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Wikimania tour of Rahul Desmukh

2018-09-13 Thread Satdeep Gill
Hi Rahul,

It's very sad to hear about your loss. I totally understand how difficult
it must have been for you and rest of your family.

Thanks a lot responding to this thread. I understand your request to
personally email you but there are many unanswered questions such as
information about the inviting organization, reporting etc. in this thread
and it would be better if you can answer all the questions one by one in
one email on this thread itself.

Let me know if you need any help in collecting all the questions in one
email. I am available to help you. Otherwise, just go through the whole
thread (which will provide you with enough context as well).

I agree with you that this discussion will help WMIN and the larger
wikimedia community as well. It will also help us ensure more transparency
in our processes.

Looking forward to hear from you! Thank you once again for taking out some
time to reply here. I believe you must not be fully available yet. So, take
your time and respond whenever you can in the coming weeks.

Best
Satdeep

[Wikimediaindia-l] Appointing Community Advocate for Punjabi Wikimedians

2018-09-06 Thread Satdeep Gill
Hello everyone,

Punjabi Wikimedians is collaborating with CIS-A2K for the growth of Punjabi
Wikisource as a focused project for the next fiscal year. We received only
one application during the first deadline and no new application was
received during the second deadline either. We gave a task to the applicant
which included visiting a library in Ludhiana which belongs to one of our
partner organizations and to digitize some works and to write a small
report. The task was completed by applicant. Hence, we have decided to hire
the applicant, User:Satpal Dandiwal
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Satpal_Dandiwal>, as Community
Advocate.

The CA will be responsible for the following tasks but not limited to these:

1. Primary task would be digitizing PD works or CC released works to be
uploaded on Wikimedia Commons and subsequently integrating them with
Punjabi Wikisource.

2. The person will be responsible for maintaining financial records of
existing and future grants of Punjabi Wikimedians.

3. The person will also be helping with logistics and organizing regular
events.

We are excited to announce this to the larger Indic community.

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] WLM updates

2018-09-04 Thread Satdeep Gill
Hi Parul,

Quick answers:

1. All the National and State Protected monuments of UP should be listed in
the three lists provided. Agra, Lucknow and Patna are just the names of the
circles and the lists for each of these contains the monuments from other
cities of UP as well.

2. Currently, there are no ASI recognized monuments from Andaman and
Nicobar, hence no monument has been included in the list. We are generally
limiting the participation to the ASI protect national and state monuments
only. We have given an exemption to Tamil community which reached out to us
before the event started.

I hope I have answered your questions.

Tanveer ji,

I would wholeheartedly like to thank you for your contribution to the
development of the Indic communities. CIS has grown a lot under your
leadership and I know your absence is going to leave a void. You have
always been a source of inspiration.

Best of luck for your future endeavors.

Also, thank you for being a great friend :)

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Jayantanath as Wikisource Project Advisor

2018-08-22 Thread Satdeep Gill
This is a great news! Indic Wikisource communities need special support to
grow and there is a big potential for Wikisource in India. Jayanta da is a
Wikisource expert and hence a perfect choice for this role.

I am hoping this would be immensely significant for the Indic Wikisource
communities.

2018-08-22 Thread Satdeep Gill
Abhinav,

We will add an option for volunteers to sign up. We can then see who can
help in which tasks.

For now, we are working and trying to engage others to work on creating
Wikidata items about all ASI recognized monuments of National importance.
This is something where everyone can start contributing right now and this
will be very useful for the future iterations of WLM as well. Here is the

[Wikimediaindia-l] Recruiting Community Advocate for Punjabi Wikimedians

2018-08-13 Thread Satdeep Gill
Hello everyone,

I wanted to share with you that Punjabi Wikimedians is going to work with
CIS-A2K for the next one year with Punjabi Wikisource being the Focused
Project Area. We invited community members interested in digitizing and
Wikisource to apply for the post of Community Advocate.

After one month, we have only received one application and now we are going
to assign a task to the person. The task will be to visit our partner
organization in Ludhiana and to digitize (scanning and post processing) two
different works to be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons. Scanning quality will
be accessed by a Wikisourcer from the wider Indic Community. The person
will also be writing a report regarding challenges and learnings from the
activity.

Any kind of feedback is welcome.

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] CIS-A2K : Transparency and Other Issues

2018-08-10 Thread Satdeep Gill
Hi all,

Documentation and Reporting has generally been an issue. As Subha mentioned
about a lot of footage and no bandwidth to upload, it reminds me of WCI2018
where we had 500 GB data and could only work around about a 100 GB of that.

And yes some communities/volunteers have been doing a lot of great
activities but don't publicize it much and nor do they write blogposts
about the same. I believe this is something where we need some support from
each other.

@Abhinav srivastava I believe everyone who was going
to Berlin was invited to attend the event in Bangalore. I do know about one
person not being available during those dates and another one was refused
visa. I might be missing out on something here.

Regarding disturbed neutrality at my end, I just wanted to say that I am
first a volunteer and then a part-employee and in my view my volunteer
activities (which includes my role in AffCom) are very much different from
my role in the New Readers program. I am happy to discuss more about this
in private email.

Satdeep Gill

[Wikimediaindia-l] Wikimania tour of Rahul Desmukh

2018-08-08 Thread Satdeep Gill
Hi Yohann,

1. I would like to know more about the fact that who was the inviting
person for this informal meetup? Can you also share the record written
invitation?

2. Since, this was something that not a part of the official program of the
Wikimania, how was it deemed important enough to be attended?
(For example, what if some random person (such as Bodhi) sends an
invitation to (let's say Manav) attend and present about Punjabi
Wikimedians UG at Asia Meetup at Wikimania 2019.)

3. Since, the invitation was one particular meetup, was the possibility of
a remote participation considered? 2 WMIN representatives present at
Wikimania (Krishna and Viswa) could also have presented with the help of
the slides prepared by Rahul.

4. It would be great if the presentation can be shared on Commons, if it
hasn't been done already (If it's there please provide a link). Also, it
would be good if Rahul writes a report (if already not done) about his
participation in the whole event, just like the scholarship attendees.
(Just for information purposes, Punjabi UG has decided to ask all its
representatives at all national and international events to prepare a
report about their participation and to try and organize local events to
pass on the learnings.)

5. Sadly no one knew of the availability of this kind of support from any
organization. What Manav was saying that last year her session was selected
for the official Wikimania program and she didn't know whether any support
was available.

6. What should be the process for making such decisions in the future?
Let's start thinking about this as this is not just about one particular
incident but the decision making in the movement in general.

I am sure this has been a good learning for the chapter. I believe ensuring
transparency and adequate decision making process is very much required to
ensure that the wider community's faith in our organizations remain intact.

Satdeep Gill

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Wikimania tour of Rahul Desmukh

2018-08-01 Thread Satdeep Gill
Hi all,

I expected more discussion on this. Although, Subhashish reposted this on
Wikimania mailing list and asked some really good questions.

I agree with Subha that if an affiliate decides to send someone to
Wikimania then the whole selection process should be transparent and also
some reporting guidelines should be established similar to Wikimania.

All this can help ensure trust of the wider Wikimedia community in our
processes and decisions.

I do want to hear why was it deemed necessary for the WMIN President to be
present at that informal meetup during Wikimania.

I do know that for some other Chapters whose chairperson's were not
attending Wikimania, some editor Board/EC member attended the meetup on
their behalf.

I expect to hear more about this.

The Indian community mailing list is arguably the most used mailing list by the
Indian Wikimedia community. However, recently some users have reported problems
with subscription and sending messages as non-subscribers. All these issues are
need to be dealt by the list admins at the earliest possible. However, the
issues remain unsolved.

So I think more active community members must be added as mailing list admins
so that these issues can be addressed in a timely manner.

Greetings,

I am happy to introduce User:Sangappadyamani
 from
the Kannada community as the Featured Wikimedian of the Month for February
2018.

Sangappa is an inspiring Kannada Wikipedian both in spirit and at work. He
is from Kalaburagi (previously Gulbarga), Sangappa works for private firm
in Bengaluru. He started contributing to English Wikipedia in 2012, when he
found that there is no article on his native place. Even though it was
deleted due some issues, Sangappa not being discouraged, went through all
the relevant guidelines, and created nineteen articles related to Karnataka.

Having made his first edit on Kannada Wikipedia in 2016, he has been very
active ever since, and created around 170 articles, with more than ten
thousand global edits. The fascinating part of Sangappa's contributions is
linked with the Google Doodle section on Kannada Wikipedia Main Page. Every
day, the subjects that are honoured by Google by featured them as their
Doodle, are created/improved by Sangappa within a few hours of its updation
at 00:00 hrs everyday. He says that in this way, he ensures that all the
popular topics of India are well represented on Kannada Wikipedia.

Sangappa makes most of his edits through mobile, or from his friend's
laptop. He also puts the wait during traffic jams from his home to office,
and vice versa, to the best use, by making edits on Wikipedia during that
period.

Regards,
Krishna Chaitanya Velaga

[Wikimediaindia-l] Bengali Wikimedian shares her Wiki Experience

2016-10-31 Thread Satdeep Gill
Hi all,

Bengali Wikimedian has shared her experience of getting duped by the fellow
Wikimedians during Wiki Treks Kalindi Khal:

https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants_talk:PEG/Sujay25/Wikipedia_Treks_Kalindi_Khal#Sharing_experience_of_my_first_Wikipedia_project

She claims that two Bengali Wikimedians have misused WMF funds and also got
money from her. Please share your opinion on this.

[Wikimediaindia-l] WCI PEG Draft - Pending

2016-04-07 Thread Satdeep Gill
Hello everyone,

I am writing this with hopes of motivating everyone once again to start
working for WCI. We have been running very late. It is high time that every
one step up and work to make this an amazing conference. Right now
requesting PEG for the event is the priority. We have to make sure we
request the grant as soon as possible.

candidates are no less but at this moment these two candidates will be in a
better position to represent the interests of the Global Wikimedia community.

[Wikimediaindia-l] WikiConference India 2016

2015-08-02 Thread Satdeep Gill
*WikiConference India 2016* (WCI 2016) is an outcome of Indic Meetup held
during Wikimania 2015
https://wikimania2015.wikimedia.org/wiki/Indic_Meetup. We had a
collective dream to bid for *Wikimania 2019* on behalf of India. If we need
to run a Wikimania successfully, it is time that the Wikimedia community in
India reboots itself and works together towards that. Conducting a
WikiConference India first will be a good start towards achieving that
goal. This will help us assess our strengths and plan accordingly for
Wikimania 2019. This is our bet to prove our unity in diversity.

You can read more about the Conference at the following link:

I would request all of you to sign up after clicking the link below:
