Please read mails in this thread. Counter acting first mail, some
people forwarding the idea that one's contribution is relevant if only
they are contributing through a free software. Which is totally wrong.
Selecting a convenient software is user's option. And even sometimes
they have no options other than using a non-free software.

Similarly and Unfortunately, your brinjalism has also no relavance in
wikimedia contribution environment.

Agreed. So long as the output is in an open standard, that is fine.
Wikipedia is very strong on open standards - hence the Commons
limitations on file types. Especially audio and video.

The beauty of FOSS is that choice is intrinsic to it.

Personally, I like my brinjal fried.

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] FOSS and Wikipedia

2012-01-05 Thread Praveen Prakash
FOSS and wikimedia project have some similarities but they are
different projects. Wikimedians are not a subgroup of FOSS followers,
infact most of them living outside ideal FOSS world (I use free
softwares, but i don't like FOSS extremism, many others using non-free
softwares). I don't think there is any possibility to impose any POV
to wikimedians in the name of FOSS if there is a good wikimedia
community. That is not very hard, since the people with particular aim
rarely contribute outside mailing list or talk page.

Wikipedia relies on three kinds of openness.

 1. The technical openness that makes the platform possible. Mediawiki is
 FOSS.
 2. The openness of content that makes participatory content creation
possible. CC-BY-SA is one of the two definitive 'open' licenses.
 3. The collaboration that is core to Wikipedia is an attribute of most
 FOSS projects.

Wikipedia isn't FOSS but it certainly is FOS, at the very least. And
it's important to remember that Wikipedia does not and cannot exist in
 a vacuum.

So for the love of Wikipedia, can you guys please stop sniping about
what is and what is not FOSS.

FOSS advocates on this list have pushed me towards Microsoft products
and I've found that some of their products are better than FOSS
alternatives. Eg. MS Office.

The outburst above is irrational.

MediaWiki is FOSS. Perhaps, some technological under-pinnings (server,
bots etc) are FOSS. What makes Wikipedia, and the important content is
contribution by the people. They come from various backgrounds and
belief systems. Not everyone supports FOSS and I am comfortable with
this. We only share a need to share our knowledge and while open stuff
enables it, we're not tied down by it. I do not see the need to bring
time and again, the contributions of FOSS to Wikipedia on several
threads. We acknowledge their contribution, that is all they ask for
when they provide the user with the software. When we took their
software, we did not know that we had to follow their methodologies to
implement Wikipedia as well.

Would have been good to mention that when you posted the link.

I have said what I have to, I will not be commenting on this thread any
further. IMHO This subject has been debated enough on this list in the last few
months, we surely have more positive stuff to discuss.

You do not provide only references, you write the relevant paragraph
that you are referencing. We did not think that we should write that
down.

The originator of this thread has informed me that he has left the
list. Agree with Pranav, that we have much better things to do than
discuss this. If this matter is raised by other party on this list, we
can tackle it there, if needed or ignore.

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] FOSS and Wikipedia

2012-01-04 Thread Ashwin Baindur
I think people need to increase their tolerance level for what is not bad
faith or unencyclopedic on this list. It seems that just mentioning FOSS is
enough to trigger off rejoinders.

See WP:IDONTLIKEIT

This list exists to discuss matters related to Wikimedia community at
large. Occasionally it has stuff like Indic language issues or tech issues
which I do not comprehend or particularly interest me. But that is no
reason for the thread not to exist. Similarly FOSS may come up like any
other word in some context or the other.

This whole business started because someone objected to a harmless
occurrence of the word FOSS. If that person had not reacted to that
harmless incidental use perhaps the thread would not have just got out of
control as it has.

As regards FOSS, I dont use FOSS myself but respect its use, its proponents
and principles. I came to Wikipedia because I thought its principles are
like FOSS and people friendly. But I don't do FOSS for mostly no reason at
all and I am very comfortable with this ambiguity.

If anyone doesn't like FOSS, feel completely free not to, but please don't
feel free to erupt in outburst just because someone used the F-word.

Paraphrasing a quote of Salman Rushdie :* Free speech means I write what I
like, you read what you like, I say what I feel, you listen to what you
want.*

So I request that we may all simmer down a bit. If this continues then I
would like to join them since I cant beat them. This I shall do by getting
upset about the abhorrent word *baingan.

*I dont like the taste of Brinjal and I promise to erupt in protest
whenever the use of the term brinjal is used on this list, culinary or
otherwise. BTW got to place an AFD on [[Brinjal]]. I am NOT joking. I'm
serious, Brinjal must go!

Warm regards,

Ashwin Baindur
