Re: [WISPA] routers

2008-09-23 Thread Patrick Shoemaker
Netopia still makes routers with Ethernet WAN interfaces. I use the
3386-ENT for the occasional customer who does not have their own
firewall. So far they have been rock solid. Telnet only configuration.
VPN, basic QoS, etc. is built in. They are $100 a pop. There is also a
version with a wireless G radio built in, the 3387WG-ENT.

I like these things because they just work, have a good feature set, and
are reasonably priced.

Darn near impossible to keep it straight.

We are doing our best to stay away from the 54G linksys AP's now because we
found that most of the models have problems with ARP over wireless.
Symptoms like loosing connectivity for 30 seconds at at a time.

We still use the higher end Linksys VPN routers, more often. They seem to be
 more stable.

But I have to say, finding stable low end routers is a challenge. We are
finding it more common that we end up using higher end Security appliances
 instead.
(sonic walls, Watch Guards, Fortigate, etc). But I would much prefer a true
 router.

I will say that Netopia used to make a Ethernet to Ethernet router that was
identical to their integrated DSL routers. Not sure if they still do.

What I might suggest is keeping a look out for a low cost Layer3 switch. Not
quite cheap yet, but starting to get affordable.

Intellinet has their OSPF capable layer2/3 switch (24 port 100baseT, 4 port
Gigabit, 8-16K of table space) for about $750.
Netgear has their 12port OSPF capable layer3 switch for about $300. (only
can handle about 500 entries in its OSPF table, so just good for for end
 user STUB type configurations).

Ah yes I was going to mention that.
 The majority of the
problem with consumer routers is the software is built 'fast and
lose'. I find the WRT54G/GS units to work well once changed.
Yes a marked improvement in performance and stability.
  Same for
 the 150/160N.
What firmware are you using on the 160N? I tried flashing it over the
weekend and finally found one it let me upload, but I appear to have
bricked the device. I can probably fix it via boot_wait, and would love
to know what firmware has been used successfully to reflash with.
You need to TFTP the mini version, then the full version. V24 from the
stable branch. I see that they have again redone the download
structure. downloads, stable, v24SP1, Consumer, Linksys, WRT160N_v1. I
do not know what has changed since the version ive been using is about
3 months old. I find with ddrt like all other software, find one that
 works and keep it.

The next largest issue is that they skimp on the
hardware resources, the 310 has 32mb ram where most other units have
16 or even as little as 8. That just is not enough with out a well
 produced firmware.

 Exactly.

We've been white labeling with Vox since late Winter and really enjoy it.
The call quality is great for us and we don't usually have many problems
other than our own network, which is mostly 900mhz.
They are a great dial tone replacement with all the features most customers
want or need.

Re: [WISPA] Part 15 Frequency Chart

2008-09-23 Thread Tom DeReggi
Mike,

5.4G to 5.7G is 250 MHZ of available spectrum. I do not believe there is a
limit on channel size or center frequency. That would be determined by the
Radio Chipset. Of course, DFS is MANDATORY, and not easy to predetermine
what channels are pre-used in your target site location. Just because, the
other users of the band, hop between channels from now and then. I believe
there were three type usage for previous licensors. The radar deployments
can be looked up on the ULS. Someone posted a more detailed explanation of
this six months or so ago, on this list. It might have been Dustin.
Usability of the band can be highly conditional on your antenna beamwidth,
and its ability to prevent your deployment from hearing Radar.

The Trango 5.4 default center channels are
 (5480..5720 MHz)

[Ch#05] 5500 dfs [Ch#06] 5520 dfs [Ch#07] 5540 dfs [Ch#08] 5560 dfs
[Ch#09] 5580 dfs [Ch#10] 5600 dfs [Ch#11] 5620 dfs [Ch#12] 5640 dfs

[WISPA] mobile caching solution

2008-09-23 Thread Rogelio
I have a situation where police cars will be driving and moving out of a
2.4/4.9 GHz network, and I would like to use something like
Netmotion/Inmotion to seamlessly switch them to the cellular network.

Does anyone have any caching solutions? When a cop car goes from wi-fi
to cellular, they will take a huge hit in terms of bandwidth, and
anything that is being queued (e.g. video) will need to be stored
temporarily while it either trickles upstream slowly or is uploaded
quickly when it comes within range of wi-fi coverage.

Any suggestions?

Joe is exactly right, he waited about nine months for a personal request to
get Powercode integrated with his preferred VoIP solution. As much as we
wanted to get the solution integrated, other features and functions
requested from our current customer base took priority, as they always have
and will. Had he placed an original order, or paid for the
service/integration to begin with, we would have willingly signed any
performance guarantees or contracts to ensure the integration would take
place by 'X' amount of time. Throughout that time, we continuously offered
the great VoIP solutions we were already integrated with (Alianza, Bicom,

patience and we will have integration with his VoIP platform in the near
future as we are almost finished with a complete revamp of our software

category.

I don't want this to spark any arguments, but I felt it only fair to

Austin, and list...

I feel your comments were unwarranted. First, I did in fact pay you guys in
good faith. It was not until several months later that you came to me and
mentioned that the ACH portion of your software was not clearing checks
through the financial gateway. Certainly, this was fortuitous as I
ultimately did not get charged for a product that was not delivered. At
least that worked out.

Representing me as someone that tried to get something for nothing was
grossly unfair and represents me in a bad light among the members and
readers here. You know full well that at the time John told me VoIP
integration was easily done. It wasn't.

My first response was a short and simple statement of fact, and a bit of
business advice if you will. I did not get into any of the specifics
concerning the myriad of broken promises from your company. I did not
discuss the fact that at times I had to chase people in PowerCode for 3
weeks to get them on the phone. I was not going to go there. But if you
wish to open discussions I will be happy to oblige.

Joe

Re: [WISPA] VOIP Providers

2008-09-23 Thread Austin Wright
My apologies to the entire list. It is obvious Joe and I have differing
opinions on the matter that should be addressed offlist, as I requested.

Here is my DIRECT number to my cell phone if anyone needs to get a hold of
Powercode, 24-7: 801-701-6205

John, our President, is available 37 hours a day, 9 days a week:
801-701-6203

Joe, I tried calling you about two hours ago and left a message. Since you
didn't answer or call back, I replied to your 'business advice' via the
list. Call me anytime...

Joe

Joe is exactly right, he waited about nine months for a personal request to
get Powercode integrated with his preferred VoIP solution. As much as we
wanted to get the solution integrated, other features and functions
requested from our current customer base took priority, as they always have
and will. Had he placed an original order, or paid for the
service/integration to begin with, we would have willingly signed any
performance guarantees or contracts to ensure the integration would take
place by 'X' amount of time. Throughout that time, we continuously offered
the great VoIP solutions we were already integrated with (Alianza, Bicom,
etc), but he was firm on his original decision. We appreciated Joe's
patience and we will have integration with his VoIP platform in the near
future as we are almost finished with a complete revamp of our software
platform, allowing us to look into further integrations in every service
category.

I don't want this to spark any arguments, but I felt it only fair to
rebuttal. Joe, feel free to contact me offlist to talk about the latest
developments with your VoIP provider.

Randy, looking forward to working with you soon.

2008-09-23 Thread Mike Hammett
I'd like to put out a big thanks to Tom Harker of Roc-Noc.

I botched some Mikrotik upgrades today and needed some boards ASAP. I called
Tom up at 2 in the afternoon. He had a dentist (or was it doctor, I dunno)
appointment to go to, but would get my order together for me. By 3:00 I was on
my way home with a bunch of new gear.

I was only able to swap out two customers before it was too late, but I
couldn't have done it if Tom didn't get me the gear that quickly.

Thanks.

Mike,

It is really nice to hear compliments on vendors instead of griping. We
should all do more of this, we have many excellent vendors who work very
hard to take care of our needs for pretty slim margins. I'm not sure if Tom
is a member of this list, but someone should pass this compliment on to him.
