Buigues, Ana. fragment of "With Reference to the Writings of At Least Three Critics," unpublished source. 1998. -- Jeff Wall re-stages some of the icons of the last third of the XIX century painting as social commentary establishing a parallelism with class struggle and social preoccupations of that time and the ones we are experiencing now, erecting himself in a "Baudelairian" _flâneur_. The case of Jeff Wall presents some complexity. While he resorts to art icons from the past, he also considers theory and social art history and criticism which has been written about some of the painting he emulates [in his photographs]. For example in _Diatribe_, 1985 he illustrates the concept of "terrain vague," which art historian T. J. Clark defined when analyzing the social reality of the outskirts of Paris, after the Haussmannization, which for example Van Gogh illustrated in some of his paintings [footnote 34]. Wall combines effects from mass media, photo-documentaries, theater, cinema, advertisement, regarding technical aspects of the construction of his photographs and transparencies. His arrangements are strictly meticulous, revealing that those events only would happen for the camera. The format of the display of his works presents some ludic simulation of what he is displaying, since his back lit transparencies in display cases resemble street advertising devices [footnote 35]. The subjects he presents usually convey social commentary, regarding the interaction of social (and racial) mix, labour conditions, or socially displaced individuals like Courbet, Manet and the Post-Impressionists decided to portray. -- Buigues, Ana. fragment of "With Reference to the Writings of At Least Three Critics," unpublished source. 1998.

John, I'm glad you finally decided to do this, the worst is over, wishing you a good new vision. As soon as you get your new glasses, tell your wife to please warn you when she comes out of the bathroom with beauty mask, you might be more scared from now on, now that you can see clearer. Sempre amb amor, Ana -- Re: movie reviews - buñuel John M. Bennett Mon, 20 Mar 2006 05:56:28 -0800 Yes, he used a swab and a dull, spatula-like knife. He said the laser would cut too deep. Only took about 3 minutes per eye, and has made an enormous difference. My corneas were all ripply and distorted (genetic condition developed over years) so it was like seeing through a ripply water glass or something. I should be getting my new glasses this week, as the prescription changed drastically (for the better) but these old ones are now a real strain. It's good Catala has made a comeback; it's fascinating to listen to it (whcih i don't get to do very often here...) - John

OK, Lanny, you'll let us know when you know what you're going to do with your masks and bunny head. Take your time, the brainstorm phase is always exciting, so many ideas come that we might delay the project for a long time. Also, Lanny, I've been trying to send you an off list email for the past week and it always says 'mail delivery failure' and the like - "The address to which the message has not yet been delivered is: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Delay reason: host lookup did not complete" Could you see if you could remedy this, or email me from a provisional email address to which I could reply? Thanks. Ana

Re: movie reviews - buñuel
Thanks for this, John. Yes, the "x" in Spanish has an interesting evolution history. In the old texts (XV cent.) many things we now write with "j" (the Arabic you mention) appear with "x". Also some Catalán "x"s are "j"s and "g"s in Castilian and other times they became "ch", and even "tx" in Catalán are "ch" in Castilian. Examples: .x->ch (from Catalán to Castilian) Elx--> Elche name of the city in the South of Alicante, famous for the finding of the Iberian sculpture Lady of Elx http://images.google.es/images?q=dama%20de%20elche&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&percentage_se rved=100&sa=N&tab=wi .x->g (from Catalán to Castilian) Moixent-->Mogente name of a town in the Valencian region, famous for the finding of the Iberian sculpture known as Warrior of Moixent http://images.google.es/images?q=guerrero%20mogente&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&percentage_s erved=100&sa=N&tab=wi .x->ch xic i xica-->chico y chica --- Also, John, was that performance you mention, something related to eye surgery, no laser, with a real surgery knife? That sound crude, but the important thing is that you can see better, all those letters: x tx sh ch 3 E G C P R U V * # @ ! b a r k Best, Ana == Re: movie reviews - buñuel JOHN BENNETT Sat, 18 Mar 2006 10:50:23 -0800 The "x" in Mexico originated when the Spaniards couldn't pronounce the Nahuatl sound in that name, which is a sort of "sh" sound. They also used "x" to indicate certain sounds in Arabic they couldn't pronounce - so that "Guadalajara" used to be spelled "Guadalaxara" . Using an "x" is the older way of spelling these words. Anyway I had Un Chien Andalou performed on me a few weeks ago when i got my eyeballs scraped smooth with a knife so i could see better. It hurt like hell, but it worked: i can see a whole lot better now. And would like to see that Chien again myself. woof guau, john

movie reviews - buñuel
today we are going to talk about buñuel's work. during the past month i've been going through a buñuel phase. i've watched most buñuel movies available at the valencia public library, although i couldn't find _un chien andaluou_, 1929 and _l'âge d'or_, 1930, which i had already seen a long time ago. i had probably seen these pieces before because i am a snob and an intellectualoide, although it might also be due to the fact that i'm european. i've been watching: _los olvidados_, 1950 _viridiana_, 1961 _belle de jour_, 1967 _tristana_, 1970 _ensayo de un crimen_, 1955 _el ángel exterminador_, 1962 _le charme discret de la bourgeoisie, 1972 although i still have much left to see, i have concluded that his work differs from time to time. -some keywords are: *surrealism *sade *dreams *abject *poverty *mexico** *méxico** *méjico** *france *españa -some key words are": .oneiric world .social realism .social critique .ancient regime .the 20s .the 30s .the 50s .the 60s .the 70s .the bells (the sound of bells on moving animals) .folk tales .folk remembrances .death .self sacrifice -also, my partner and i had a problem watching _el ángel exterminador). I think the problem was that we were tired at the end of the day, to watch such a movie. however, perhaps was due to both: either we were as tired as the people in the movie who appear to go through an immobility-fatigue-somnolence spell, or the characters of the movie transmitted us their sleepy feelings through a tele-dvd tele-pathy. ** while mexicans (from mexico) write the name of their country as 'méxico' but pronounce it 'méjico,' spanish (from spain) write the name of mexico as 'méjico.' mexicans don't like that we, spanish, write it just as it is pronounced.

falles 2006
Just wanted to share this with my wryting list. Here in Valencia, Spain, we are celebrating the Falles (Catalan) or Fallas (Castilian) festival from March 15 to 19. Although I'm a bit tired of all the noise after so many years of being exposed to it, still I find it interesting, and always wanted to write a short article about them, both for locals and foreigners, inserting my own ideas, comparanda, and pics. However, things take time, so maybe next year. So, I'm just sending a couple of links for those interested, and hope you'll find this festival of fire and noise, social satire, art and folk traditions of some anthropological interest. Some of you might find it reminiscent of other festivals in other parts of the world. It basically is a celebration of the spring equinox, where pagan and religious traditions have melt down ... but there is much more to it. "It is thought that the Falles started in the Middle Ages, when artisans put out their broken artifacts and pieces of wood that they sorted during the winter then burnt them to celebrate the spring equinox." perhaps the most interesting sentence in the wikipedia link, but c'est la vie ... the wikipedia link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Falles and a link for downloading and listening to the firecrackers concerts/compositions archived in the website of our local tv station (radio televisión valenciana) http://www.rtvv.es/festes/falles.asp Over and out, Ana

Well, I'm not sure if this means that the person writing the report was not informed about the name of the doctor who requested the tests or if the doctor (the one in charge of getting the info) hadn't been informed about the test results by the time of the writing of the report. But now everyone has been informed, and we are all very happy to know that my vertigo attack is not related to a pregnancy. when in need of creating a file it is always better to chose the .txt format instead of the .doc format because many of my .doc(s) are just not working anymore and that can be frustrating, at times. i consider myself a gentle person, very patient, but sometimes i get cranky with the computer especially when one is having a bad day -- not to mention when one is menstruating, because women are hysterical by nature, or maybe it is because today i'm wearing my dancing shoes. my dancing shoes are tacky but sexy (therefore beautiful) but they are new and have high heels so they're uncomfortable, but i'm trying to get comfortable in them by wearing them at home, so when i go dancing tomorrow, anyway, where was i? and the whole microsoft thing is just a piece of crap, so please, take my advice and go for .txt and not for .doc

it's not a pimple cf: http://groups.google.es/group/fa.fiction-of-philosophy/msg/efe8ec58bdd1c50b? &hl=es >From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia cf. is an abbreviation for the Latin word confer, meaning "compare" or "consult." It is mainly used in common and statute law contexts, as well as in academic writing. It is sometimes used (primarily in dictionaries) to offer insight into the preceding word's etymology - that is, to suggest how one term obtained its particular naming convention (perhaps from another phrase).

Thanks, Alan. Yes, it's true, 'the death of the author' ... OK, my website (emotional mobile studio) is at: http://www.geocities.com/supermiembro/otherbio.html A short intro to it: Ana Buigues (Made in Spain. València, 1962) has a 'taller móvil emocional' (emotional mobile studio) located halfway through her portable computer, electronic organizer, cameras, and cell phone, from which a series of wreadings, images, meditations, net.art, and wap.art projects have sprung. Ana also works as .Guerrera del Interfaz [a politically committed heroine] and as .Vincent Fourier [a politically disenchanted persona]. Ana's works focus on the [in] visible, the unsayable, and the private emotional spaces that embrace interiority, catalyzed through digital technology, communications devices, and the accidents of losing data (feelings & memory). She speaks about the conversion of words/files through computer protocols and algorithms as a metaphor for the artificiality of language to put our emotional chaos into intellectual order commenting upon the Cartesian body-mind split theory and Turing machines. Her pieces emphasize psychoemotional drives, the unfinished/unpolished, fragmentation and betweenness, the provisional as permanent, and traveling. >From 1990 to 2002, Ana lived in Alberta, Québec, and Ontario. She is currently living in València. Her linguistic vocabulary mixes Canadian Anglophony, Catalan from the Valencian region, baroque Castilian, and French. -- > -Original Message- > From: WRYTING-L : Writing and Theory across Disciplines > [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Alan Sondheim > Sent: jueves, 05 de mayo de 2005 19:44 > To: WRYTING-L@LISTSERV.UTORONTO.CA > Subject: Re: libertad > > > I don't think there's any need to say whose image the 'original was'. Re: libertad
So far, when I included images in my posts, I had taken them, with my cameras, or retouch them -- I know I'm not a very good photographer. But this time I didn't shoot this picture, though I 'took' it. I sometimes do emotional journaling, when frustrated about something, but when writing is not enough I focus on image visualization looking for images and 'gluing' them to the journal. In this case I de-contextualized and re-contextualized this image. I was running a search on google by writing names of feelings, etc. I wasn't looking for the word 'libertad' at all, but for something I don't exactly remember now. This pic called my attention because it was completely different from the others that google's 'heart' was throwing out there. I clicked on it and found a page presenting a collection of hand-bags But to me the image is 'libertad' - a feeling, a word, a solution I hadn't been able to write in the google bar . >From now on, I will write a short note saying that the image is not mine.
