[XeTeX] XeLaTeX PDF Glitch with Serbian Glyphs
Serbian Cyrillic requires a peculiar localisation because some glyphs are different from the standard. The PDF produced by XeLaTeX however must have some glitch because if I try copy/paste from it to another document the characters affected by Serbian localisation simply disappear :-\ ! Hi Zdenek,
\setdefaultlanguage{turkish} is the same as \setmainlanguage{turkish}
which is in my example and I tried, it doesn't have any noticeable effects.
However, \uccode`\i=`\I. gives the intended result but doesn't create
problems only because I'm working in a monolingual document, such type
of capitalization should be restricted to Turkish.
Thanks anyway, as far as my needs are concerned, this workaround
satisfies me.

Hi Taylor OK, you're right, it's a combo: fake fontspec errors in XeLaTeX and the breakdown of go-to functions in TeXWorks, are they related? I don't know. I cannot discern which one is to be blamed, for I typeset stuff in XeTeX through TeXWorks, I don't know how to use raw XeTeX nor do I use other LaTeX flavors in TeXWorks. Hi To Mojca: No, the version I'm running is NOT the one bundled with Ubuntu 11.10 (that's TL 2009), I just downloaded a dvd of TL 2011 and installed it manually via tl-install. Installation is complete (every package), and nothing of the TL 2009 package bundled with Ubuntu is installed. I checked this. To Ross: So, are you suggesting I should downgrade to TL 2010? Previously I was using just that version, without any apparent problem, all started when I upgraded to TL 2011 (but after a fresh install, so no remnants of TL 2010 on my hard disk). I uploaded a minimal working example, it's a stripped down version of a
book, text removed apart from a stub using greek text (Unicode
capabilities), the prologue is intact, the default font is Tinos, a
freely downloadable font, but if you want you can substitute it with
LiberationSerif or any other font that supports polytonic Greek.
Please provide me with an example for pdflatex, I don't know how to use
it :)

Hi To Vafa: Wait, there exists a Liberation Serif Italic, just look in your \usr\share\fonts directory, it's not normal to get such an error, and no, I didn't get it back in TexLive 2010. Have you also noticed something like this in your output console? * * fontspec warning: script-not-exist * * Font 'Tinos' does not contain script 'Greek'. * That too is new for me, it's a fake error since Greek letters are correctly displayed and Tinos DOES contain Greek letters. So, what's wrong with fontspec? To Chandra The reality is I just don't subscribe to the mailing list in order to avoid getting my box flooded with issues I don't bother with, I just answer by clicking on the address at tug.org/pipemail/xetex etc... Hi guys, Why should fontspec try to load a crappy slanted shape in the first place? I just don't understand why! Slanted shapes are a last-resort stuff, not first-choice. So why loading a slanted shape when the italic is available? I will take a look at your output files, but the real issues is not fontspec errors, it's the broken go-to functions in TeXWorks, none of you use TeXWorks, right? We also don't know if those fontspec errors are related with go-to functions in TeXWorks, maybe it's just a coincidence that they happen to occur together. To Andy: Hi No, I only have TL2011 and nothing of the bundled version (2009) is installed, and no, there's no duplicate of the font, actually this happens with every font, it's a bit weird for every font to be duplicated. The directories are the standard ones: \usr\share\fonts and ~\.fonts\ As far as PATH is concerned, I can run tlmgr update --all from my home path, I think that means PATH works fine. Right? But the real problem is in TeXWorks, the go to pdf and go to source files functions are completely broken, that's the real issue. [XeTeX] Wacky behavior of XeLaTeX in TeXLive 2011
Hi My problem is kind of complicated: 1. After processing a XeLaTeX source file the yellow lines the cross-reference between pdf and source file and vice versa is completely broken. 2. This happens after I updated to Ubuntu 11.10, TexLive 2011 and texWorks 0.5, previously I was using Ubuntu 11.04, TexLive 2010 and texWorks something before 0.5. 3. I don't know if this has something to do with that, but I also get fake fontspec errors, I mean I don't see any problem in the output, even though, according to the output panel, there should be some. At first I thought this had something to do with TeXWorks: http://code.google.com/p/texworks/issues/detail?id=550#makechanges but then they told me the SyncTeX code is to be blamed for that. As I wrote: look in frenchb.ldf to find the french settings. The
definition of \@makefntext above is a simple example. Adjust it to
your need.
Since what I'm lacking here is indentation I tried to put together the
following collage by pasting a piece of code from frenchb.ldf.

Well, it looks to me as if the expansion of @makefntext tries to perform an assignment to \parindentFFN (even though you omitted an explicit assignment operator); surely this is not what you intended ? To be honest, I wouldn't worry about the \makeatletter nonsense; it
really
isn't at the heart of your problem. If you are getting an \hbox that
is
overfull
by over 381pt (5.27), the numbers have all but disappeared, and the
text
appears to be cut, then John Was's suggestion that an indentation of
ten
inches might not have been what you intended may well be the cause.

I've been trying to get polyglossia and babel to coexist all the
afternoon long: seven languages is simply too much!

But in Polyglossia this style isn't activated by default. Is there a way to activate it? The package footmisc doesn't seem to offer such an option. To Adam: Yeah, that was exactly the point I made two days ago, when I told you XeTeX was apparently unable to read correctly the GPOS. Me too I've the 2.068 version dated 2004. Looking on FontForge the kerning set by designers for the combination of glyphs uni0423+uni0431.ital is -53. Previously Peter reported a kerning value of -183. -2ex is OK, it looks remarkably like the output FontForge proposes. To John: I don't think there should be copyright infringements, as I'm modifying output, not the font per se. And what's more it's XeTeX that gets it wrong, by apparently ignoring the *right* kerning set by font designers. What I'm trying to do is just a workaround to remedy deficiencies in XeTeX. Now, back to the kerning=mykerns, I heard about a mycrotypography package, could it be of use to me? Since,as I told you all, this combination occurs very frequently--and my book is quite long--if I could put this setting in the prologue, I could spare myself a big waste of time. Yeah, as I told you I'd taken a look in FontForge and it came out font
designers had anticipated such combination in the kerning pairs table.
In effect it works in PangoView but I can't figure out how to direct the
output toward a pdf, so I can't show you the right kerning, anyhow there
should be more space, that's obvious.
There should be some bug in XeTeX, I guess it doesn't look for kerning
pairs that involve alternate glyphs.

I've also tested it with a plain XeTeX variant:

That would be redundant since the Polyglossia package already takes care
of selecting alphabet language, thus also the relevant localized
glyphs if needed.

Hello everybody,
With the MinionPro font, if I try to typeset a localized
form(specifically, Serbian) of U+0431 CYRILLIC SMALL LETTER BE
preceded by U+0423 CYRILLIC CAPITAL LETTER U, Xe(La)Tex doesn't kern
it the right way, because it provides me with a blatant case of
characters stuck together. This doesn't happen if I process the
relevant combination through, for instance, PangoView. Neither does it
happen with other fonts like Constantia, which possess Serbian glyphs.
In fact, FontForge revealed me that MinionPro does have a specific pair
combination for this case. That implies that XeTex simply ignores it,
maybe because it involves an alternate glyph?
Here below is a .tex example:
