DId you or anyone else fiddle with X settings of late? X4.2.1 can't support 24 bit color on 810 based chipsets. Reduce it to 16. Resolution is bad, but you can have X up and running. [XFree86] NVidia Geforce on Debian Woody Display Problems
Hello, I have explained this problem before, and I was getting some advice from somebody, without any luck. Unfortunately, I have lost his e-mail address, so I'm hoping he'll recognize this and e-mail me again :) In case anybody else may have some suggestions, here is my problem: I am running XFree v 4.1.0.1 (protocol Version 11, revision 0, vender release 6510), with an Nvidia geForce 2 MX400, and the Nvidia's driver version 1.0-4191. (I realize I don't have the latest XFree86, but I have tried the latest using Gentoo, with the same problem.) While X is running, I get really bad display problems, as lines of text will seem to shift back and forth, right to left. Alternating lines with shift in the opposite direction. I have my HorizSync and VertRefresh set correctly. I have no idea why it is doing this, or even how to start diagnosing the problem. I would really appreciate any suggestions. Thanks in advance, Travis Troyer ___ XFree86 mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://XFree86.Org/mailman/listinfo/xfree86

Re: [XFree86] Trident TGUI9660: looks zoomed in about 20x
Lionel, Thanks. The 'vesa' tip got it going sufficiently well to get 'redhat-config-xfree86' to work. From there I selected the Trident TGUI9660 card, and Gateway monitor. Selecting the Trident card also selected the 'trident' driver, which resulted in things going back to the original zoomed screen, however setting the driver to 'vesa' made it work. It still was a bit oversize, however setting the highest resolution took care of that. At least it is now workable. Generic VESA was one selection I had not tried before. The generic VGA did not help. Thanks again, and also to John. Without the help of these lists, getting started with Linux would be a rough "go" (the books help, but even the most recent are out-of-date by the time they hit the store). [XFree86] Xinerama using "nv" driver vs "nvidia"
Hi I just recently acquired a GeForce 4 MX440 card made by Asus. Its a dual head card with 2 DVI ports and a third connector for video capture. I would like to use the nv driver developed by the XFree86 project. The nv driver appears to be more stable than the NVidia driver, and from what I can tell moves faster as well. The problem I'm having is using the nv driver with Xinerama. I had dual heads running ok with my old Radeon VE, and I just used that config file to set up the new cards. I have everything working well with the nvidia driver now, but if I change over to the nv driver X won't start. I can start with a single head if I comment out the line: BusID "PCI:1:0:0" In the second device section, but of course this only loads one head. I can only guess the problem is with the nv driver not correctly seeing the card as a dual head card, but I don't know how to fix it. This is the output in the XFree log: (II) NV: driver for NVIDIA chipsets: RIVA 128, RIVA TNT, RIVA TNT2 [snip] GeForce4 MX 440, GeForce4 MX 420, [snip] (II) Primary Device is: PCI 01:00:0 (--) Chipset GeForce4 MX 440 with AGP8X found (--) Chipset GeForce4 MX 440 with AGP8X found (II) resource ranges after xf86ClaimFixedResources() call: [0] -1 0 0xffe0 - 0x (0x20) MX[B](B) [1] -1 0 0x0010 - 0x3fff (0x3ff0) MX[B]E(B) [snip] Fatal server error: Requested Entity already in use! Re: [XFree86] Segmentation Fault
I believe that the problem is in the hardware acceleration. By moving that module, X can no longer find it. Therefore it disables DRI and falls back on software rendering. I'll bet that you don't get a particulary good framerate. Unfortunetly I do not know where to go from here ;) Perhaps other people might know. Re: [XFree86] Trident TGUI9660: looks zoomed in about 20x
a possible hint: in the old days this type of problem used to occur when the graphic card was not recognised. The current solution was to use one of the "universal" server (3.3.6) or driver(4.x.x) in your case that would be vesa (regretably not accelerated...) Just a small add-on on the MS Word tip, WordPad (in the accessories) works as well if not better (being less sophisticated it does not recognize the links and other fancy formating as such, which is quite a bit more agreable...) Which OS and which XFree86 versions are you using ? XFree86 runs on the alpha on at least Linux, FreeBSD, NetBSD and OpenBSD. I'm not sure if XFree86 supports Tru64 or VMS out of the box. Also which kind of graphic hardware ? Alpha machines comes either with DEC TGA cards or PC-like VGA cards. Tga cards are supported on most systems, for vga cards, it depends on a lot of factors (OS support, whether the driver for a particular card type is 64bit clean or not, etc). ___ XFree86 mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://XFree86.Org/mailman/listinfo/xfree86

I am requesting some help and information on Xfree86 to help with a project I am trying to complete. I have several hundred PC's I am trying to upgrade the monitor on. The problem is the PC's I am upgrading have at least 3 different video chips on the motherboard. I am looking for a way to automate the detection of which kind of chip the PC has and then load the appropriate values for the monitor we are upgrading to. I would like to do this with a script. Sir, You wouldn't be able to move around because the virtual size is the same as the view size (i.e. 320x200). [XFree86] USB pointing devices : accel and sens?
it's common knowledge that one can use xset to adjust the mouse acceleration factor and the radius of motion after which accel kicks in. it's also common knowledge that add-on USB keyboards and pointing devices are becoming more and more popular for Linux/X11 workstations and laptops. what isn't common knowledge, is how to set the accel and sensitivity for these additional USB devices. xset seems to "see" only the first device listed in the XF86 config file. this is of course the primary mouse device, not the hotplug, removable USB device. I'm facing the problem myself now, trying out a strange but interesting combined keyboard/pad called Touchstream, by FingerWorks. as with most pointing devices it can be difficult to make fine accurate motions, and one often wants (esp. during graphic design) to "vernier" the pointer action down. I'd like to "tune" my touch pad just as I would my conventional mouse or trackball. after half a day of googling and sending email inquiries I have found no way of doing this. I'm not an XF86 guru by any means, so I may not be using the right keywords for my searches :-) but so far, no solution has emerged. XFree86 is my last hope. can anyone lend a clue? de . :De Clarke, Software Engineer UCO/Lick Observatory, UCSC: :Mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] | : :Web: www.ucolick.org | Don't Fear the Penguins : :1024D/B9C9E76E F892 5F17 8E0A F095 05CD EE8B D169 EDAA B9C9 E76E: ___ XFree86 mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://XFree86.Org/mailman/listinfo/xfree86

[XFree86] [XFree86(TM) Bug Report] SIGALRM used for SMART_SCHEDULE interacts badly with system calls
Regarding: SIGALRM used for SMART_SCHEDULE interacts badly with system calls Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] XFree86 Version: XFree86 Version 4.2.1 / X Window System OS: FreeBSD 4.4-RELEASE-p1 i386 [ELF] Area: Xserver Server: XFree86 (The XFree86 4.x server) Video Card: It does not have to do with the video card. Description: The server compiled with SMART_SCHEDULE arranges for a SIGALRM to occur every 20ms. This very frequent signal interacts badly with the rest of the system calls performed by the server. In particular, when using modules/wacom_drv.o with the serial tablet NOT plugged in, I found that although the server starts up OK, later if an application such as GIMP is started that attempts to access the tablet, the X server hangs in a tight loop involving repeated calls to select() that are interrupted by SIGALRM and then retried. This is because the calls to select() in xf86OpenSerial() are wrapped in a SYSCALL macro that retries the select() until EINTR is not returned. However, any call to select() that waits longer than 20ms is guaranteed to be interrupted by SIGALRM, so the loop never terminates. This is not a problem during the initial server startup, because the SMART_SCHEDULE alarm signals are apparently not started until after this phase. Also, FreeBSD does NOT update the timeval argument to select() as Linux does when the call to select() is interrupted. It is probably inadvisable for the X server to rely on this semantics, as it seems to be non-POSIX and there is little agreement that the Linux behavior is better. In any case, the problem is not limited to select(). After rewriting the WACOM driver to avoid the calls to xf86WaitForInput() that were hanging, I found that a similar problem still occurs in xf86OpenSerial(), with the call to open(). On FreeBSD, it is possible for a call to open() on a serial port to block for several seconds while waiting while the driver is holding DTR low. Again, the open() call is repeatedly interrupted by the SIGALRM, and then it is retried. This apparently continues the DTR low condition in the driver for an indefinite period. I don't think this is really a problem with FreeBSD. It is really a problem resulting from the use of rapid periodic signals, together with the way all the system calls in the X server are wrapped in a SYSCALL macro that generates massive number of places where infinite loops can potentially occur. Re: [XFree86] X windows crash
Sir, Sorry for the last couple of emails.. heh First, reboot. Then boot by: when you boot, pass the following option to the kernel: 'init=/bin/bash" So if you normally type "linux", do "linux init=/bin/bash" There's probably a better way. Perhaps "linux single" works, or "linux safe". For some reason it is using /etc/X11/XF86Config , and not /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 as I had assumed. I appologies for my error. Please edit /etc/X11/XF86Config and add the unix/:-1 to the font path. JohnFlux msg01300/pgp0.pgp Description: signature

John Tapsell - thanks for your reply. I've added the line, FontPath "unix/:-1" to the XF86Vonfig file. On rebooting the system it loops continuously between showing me the text login screen and a blank screen. Have you any further suggestions please? Re: [XFree86] Trident TGUI9660: looks zoomed in about 20x
Hi, Well your config file says: (==) VGA(0): Virtual size is 320x200 (pitch 320) (**) VGA(0): Built-in mode "Generic 320x200 default mode": 12.6 MHz (scaled from 25.2 MHz), 31.5 kHz, 70.2 Hz (VScan) No wonder it all looks big :) Btw to convert from linux format to windows you can open the file in MSDOS Edit. (file->run-> "edit") Then save it, or copy and paste it. Also MS Word will convert iirc. :) Anyway, on with the story.. You need to setup some resolutions. Quickest way to do this is probably just to start from scratch. Do: mv /etc/X11/XF86Config-4{,.backup-30012003} redhat-config-xfree86 Let me know how this works out. Even just moving slightly leave a trail. Minimize the window and restore and the window comes back perfect. Also the cursor has a dual line ghost floating below and offset slightly to the right. Re: [XFree86] X windows crash
Hi! It is possible that the font server is listening on "unix/:-1" rather than "unix/:7100" To rule out that possibility, and make the config file more robust for later, edit /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 and look for where it says: FontPath "unix/:7100" And add in FontPath "unix/:-1" (You can leave them both in their. It will use whatever it can) Let me know how whether this works. JohnFlux On Thursday 30 January 2003 10:00 am, Roger Harden wrote: > Hi! Thanks! We didn't quite get the auto probing to "just work" - we can do it without most of the DDC info, but not all monitors supply the two pieces that are most convenient for us, and we haven't got around to doing it the hardware with all the info that is given in each case. [XFree86] compaq tft1720 config
Hello all, I'm using X 4.2.1, RedHat 8.0, with an on-board Intel chipset (845 I think), and a Compaq TFT1720 (flat panel). I don't have any modelines or anything for this model monitor; probing the monitor, XFree86 is trying to drive it at 85hz. It recommends 60hz, and there is a horrid flickering giving me a serious head-ache, that I think is because of the incorrect setting. Without access to the modelines, is there anyway to "figure them out"? Reading the X startup logs, when querying the monitor it seems to be telling XFree86 the correct modes to support. XFree86 is just going ahead, ignoring them, and using 85hz anyways, tho. I can send copies of the startup log if that's necessary for more info (I'm not sure what would all be required; it should Just Work(tm) using probing, but...). Also, I'm not subscribed to the list, please make sure my e-mail at least gets CC'd. Thanks! ___ XFree86 mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://XFree86.Org/mailman/listinfo/xfree86

I seem to remember that specifying the videoram was the _only_ way to make it work for a while. But Koen spent quite a lot of time getting the memory detection right, if you check the driver it will probe roughly for the amount of memory from the config registers on the chip and then start walking along it testing the actual boundary. I think current XFree86 (and late 3.x XF86_SVGA) will do that correctly for most/all cards. As for 2MB cards, I never saw any of them at least. I believe there was just the 2.25 and 4MB versions available in large numbers. According to the databook it is possible to set up DRAM-based configurations with 1, 2 and 4MB, but I don't know of anyone who shipped them. With MDRAM-based designs I don't remember anymore if there existed versions with just 2 memory chips, the controller seems to be able to handle it. Mostly I seem to remember the different designs had different sizes of MDRAMS (different number of banks inside each chip or something). > I also never succeeded in adding video memory to my ET6000 adapter. :) That would probably be a challenge, yes. You would have to remove the MDRAMs and replace them with new ones, and probably do some other modifications as well. > So what is the XFree86-W32-3.3.6 doing there? Harald Nordgård-Hansen wrote: Yury Tarasievich <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> writes: [...] But posting the XF86Config-4 file would certainly help eliminating that possibility. Yep. I vaguely remember from my 3.3.* experience that amount of VideoRAM should *not* be set in X config file when working with Tseng X server. I never succeeded in starting X with that option specified. It's important not specifying it wrongly. And the correct value does not neccessarily coincide with the actual amount of ram. :) So I would guess specifying it could easily fail, yes. (If my memory works today, part of the problem was that there was a register file or something located just below 4MB, which meant that a card with the full possible 4MB memory had to have 8kb subtracted from the memory size in order to work. :) I still own ET6000 with famous 2.25Mb feature (or was it notorious feature? :) In X 3.3.*, I never succeeded in telling it about having 2304Kb of memory (VideoRAM 2304 was sure way to have X not started), and autodetect always detected 2048Kb, so depriving me of some (seemingly present) video modes. I didn't even try VideoRAM directive in 4.* :) Were there any Tsengs ET6K with exactly 2048Kb? I also never succeeded in adding video memory to my ET6000 adapter. :) So for beginning try removing XFree86-W32 and then reinstalling XFree86-4.whatever-you-have-there. After configuring it revise your config (comment out VideoRAM directive). Well, removing the package is probably a good idea anyway. The logfile was from XFree86 4.x, though. So what is the XFree86-W32-3.3.6 doing there? Is its presence of any significance? And it indicated that there was no VideoRAM directive, but that should also be verified. In addition I would probably have tried the card in a Windows-box or something, to verify that the hardware isn't broken. Some of the values in the logfile indicate some serious breakage. I recall now, there can be some combinations of motherboards and ET6K's that produce problems.
