This second configuration have the files XF86Config.ex1(example 1) and XFree86.log.ex1. I feel that the second configuration is the best approach, and hope that you could give me some help. The config file you use when you're booted into Linux is not going to work when you're in VMWare. Think about it: In Linux, the X server is accessing your video card. In VMWare, the X server is accessing a virtual video device. XFree86 Version 4.1.0.1 will be 2 years old soon. -lava Seriously, neither redhat nor mandrake gave much of a fuss about my hardware setup, so im not quite sure whats wrong, but I JUST CANT GET X GOING! It starts up but hangs with the words No device detected - fatal server error - no screen found. I did the net install of debian (woody) with bf2-flavour (whatever the heck that means -kernel stuff I guess) I have a GeForce MX440 w 128 mb ddrram on a 8x agp port. My screen is a Amitech (danish manufacturer) 15 TFT. the XF86Config-4 is configured with xf86config. The refresh rates are entered manually by me according to my monitor specs from the amitech website. xf86cfg also hangs, similarly to x itself. Once i did manage to get X started, by specifying the Standard VGA device, and 8-bit color depth. That gave me a twm-screen with a resolution of about 320x 240! But obviously thats no good. This is simply an observation with absolutely no insinuation intended. I don't don't want a flame war or a lecture about the support aspects of free software. I'm well aware: I'd simply like to start a discussion on how to help improve this situation. Duplicates and spam excluded, I count 132 new unique message topics/threads since September 1st. Over 75 of these were un-responded to. That's over 50%. Being the good netitizen that I am (sarcasm), I've taken the liberty to respond to 28 of them (fact). 26 of those were people with difficulty configuring X. Of course, that's probably a direct byproduct of the generic crash error message. So it would seem the concencus is that no response is better than shoveling documentation URLs back at the user? Seems like an awful situation either way. Every newbie who can't get X working probably doesn't spend more than 10 minutes troubleshooting it and gives up. Not that that's anyone's problem but their own; just a shame. *) Most posts only include the log file, part of the log file (the tail end), or the config file, not both. Maybe the generic error message should indicate a need for both? *) Most problems are probably one or two-line fixes. Adding sync rates, changing default color depths, specifying the right driver, and everyone's favorite: restarting xfs(1) on RedHat. However it's hard to tell when the user doesn't include the log and config. *) I wont name vendors, but most of these problems are a result indeed vendor-specific modifications, customizations, and configuration tools. *) Perhaps the error message could be re-worded so as to unambiguously indicate no expectation of help / a reply? *) http://www.xfree86.org/help.html lists everything a thorough support request ought to include. Why not include that URL in the error message too? *) Some posts are just impractical to respond to due to the nature of user and the content of the post. No errors, no logs, and an extremely vague description of the problem. These are probably worthy of a canned response of some sort. There are plentry of confirmed reports of this combo working in `d0z3. I'm
doing something very similar to this and am currious as to your results.
Do you have the details of any confirmed reports, specific hardware setup
etc. A link would be nice as I have heard very little so far. What about

overheated and crashed my box. Anyway have a look at some of the pics on the
page and I'll try to get it updated as soon as I can get it functional under
unix. I'm going to try to get it to work in:

[Xpert]HP 700 series frambuffer support (GIO Graphics?)
...obviously this is quite a-ways down the road for port-700 series
development, but I was curious -- what are the chances of working torwards
XFree86 support for this series onboard FB? From my DMESG:

But it's very superficial. I'm having trouble finding info about this IC in
google. I'll try to get a serial number of the mainboard. Apparently the
HP-UX X server is based off of X11R5, so support has exists at one point or
another. X11R6 seems to have support in: xc/programs/Xserver/hw/hp/
Ideas?

These implement the XFree86 4.x software architecture (generic optimizations, completely loadable board/display drivers, etc), but do it for the Sbus. (I'm not sure if they can support simulataneous Sbus and PCI adaptors. You can get that kind of mix and match displays on the Starfire boards [aka Sun 3x00,4x00 class machines] with the right set of midplane cards.) So, it's not just a matter of #ifdef'ing a little code -- you need to write support for probing the sbus space for the XFree86 server, and then whack on the drivers a bit, probably. There's also a matter of impedence matching the device/ioctl support for the frame buffers under Linux with your OS.
