Following up on my own email: I've built XFree86 4.6.99.27 from CVS
and get the same behaviour.

Log when using the vesa driver:
ftp://stix.id.au/pub/tmp/XFree86-4.6.99.27-vesa.log

Log when using the nv driver:
ftp://stix.id.au/pub/tmp/XFree86-4.6.99.27-nv.log

Photo of screen running 1680x1050 with the nv driver:
ftp://stix.id.au/pub/tmp/1680x1050.jpg

The config used for the nv driver:
ftp://stix.id.au/pub/tmp/XF86Config

An additional data point is that when running with the nv driver
and the 1680x1050 modeline, the LCD monitor reports [EMAIL PROTECTED],
so something is very screwy.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

[XFree86] 'nv' support of NVIDIA GeForce 6150 LE

2007-07-09 Thread Paul Ripke
Hi,

What is the current status of support for the NVIDIA GeForce 6150 LE?
I've manually pulled up the support in the 'nv' driver to XFree86
4.5.0 under NetBSD 4.0_BETA2 on i386. Prior to pulling up the
support, it would configure using the vesa driver. My monitor is a
1680x1050 native LCD, which obviously isn't a valid VESA mode.
Running with the pulled-up 'nv' support, it fails to get DDC info,
and with a manually configured 1680x1050 modeline, looks pretty
horrible - bad aliasing effects and quite wavy.

I also tried Knoppix 5.1.1 which runs some Xorg version... looks fine
with 'nv' running 1280x1024, but monitor gets an 'out of range'
forcing it to 1680x1050 with the same modeline as above.

I'm now building from CVS tag xf-4_6_99_27 and will give that a go,
although I can't see any relevant changes.

FYI: my current start log with the pulled up changes can be found
here:
ftp://stix.id.au/pub/tmp/XFree86-nv.log

Cheers,

faster. Another option would be to omit the "noaccel" and
"ShadowFB" options and instead try to turn off the acceleration

so it would take some experimentation, but for starters, I'd
try:

   Option "XaaNoPixmapCache"
   Option "XaaNoOffscreenPixmaps"

Thanks for your hints. Sadly, my problems
seem rather "deep".

I switched (down) to VGA driver (guessing that the chip
might support it) and set 800x600 24 bit,
and still had the same problem.

The only setting that gave non-bugged display
was VGA, 1024x768, 256 (paletted) colours!

This is a little limiting :-)

So I suspect my problem is rather deep rooted.

I have run Mandrake 9.0, 9.1, 9.2 and 10.1 successfully
on this machine; this is the first graphics
problem I've had.

Any hints (as always...) gratefully accepted.

[XFree86] intel driver not varying gamma?

2005-11-16 Thread paul womack

Is there any way to apply pressure, or
get code written, or get information?

I have a nice company supplied laptop,
but I cannot alter the gamma, which leaves
the display less useful than it could be.

The Video card is an Intel 852, and according
to their support site the Linux driver doesn't "do" gamma.
The card *does*, under Windows.

http://www.intel.com/support/graphics/sb/cs-020769.htm

AFAIK this family of cards is widely used.

Do I have any hope of ever seeing progress on this?

1) Can gamma correction be added/incorporated into the driver?

(even if undesirable) to gamma compensate the data being sent
to the driver; it is clear that this approach will suffer from
range and quantisation issues, but it can't be (much) worse
than what I have at the moment, which is (judging by screen cards)
a non-negotiable gamma of 1.6, against a desired 2.2

[XFree86] gamma correction outside driver?

2005-05-03 Thread paul womack
My screen is all washed out.
So I did research.
http://applications.linux.com/article.pl?sid=05/02/07/2244242
I need to correct my gamma. Using xgamma.
Brief experimentation showed that not much was happening.
(not so brief) searching showed this...
http://www.intel.com/support/graphics/sb/cs-020769.htm
Intel's driver for the card I have doesn't "do" gamma.
A brief email interchange with intel (or a bot, or a helpdesk
person) revealed this ain't changing anytime soon.
So - is there any way I can get gamma correction applied
OUTSIDE the driver?
My screen is really not very usable in its current state.

[XFree86] 8 plane PseudoColor Visual support under 24 plane configuration

2004-11-30 Thread Pearson, Paul L-Baker Atlas

We have an application that requires the 8 plane PseudoColor
Visual to run. We have required our Solaris and HP-UX customers to configure their
systems as 8 plane systems to support our application. I am porting the
application to Linux (Red Hat) and would like to run on the out-of-the-box
configuration. When X is configured for an 8 planes there are not enough colors
(KDE seems to consume a rather large amount of colors). So I added code to
request the 8 plane PseudoColor Visual from the X server. This works fine on
Solaris, HP-UX and Exceed – when those servers are configured for 24
planes, they provide the 8 plane Visual as an option. When XFree86 is
configured for 24 planes – only the 24 plane Visuals are offered.

Can I set the XF86Config file up to offer 8 plane Visuals in
addition to the 24 plane Visuals? I’ve been playing with the Visual filed
under the Display subsection, but I can’t get anything to change. Xdpyinfo
shows 8 visuals – 4 identical 24 plane TrueColor and 4 identical 24 plane
DirectColor.

Thanks,

Re: [XFree86] IBM t41 laptop and RedHat 7.2

2004-10-20 Thread Paul Hands

I think 7.2 is too old for a T41.  You *may* be able to get a more recent driver from the graphics chip manufacturer (ATI?).  Thre may not be one available for something as old as 7.2, so you may have to compile the source and install it yourself.  My advice is NOT to use 7.2, but to use something more recent (and supported), like SuSE 9.x.

[XFree86] help - new RH9 install - X locking up

2004-08-31 Thread Paul

Hello,
I'm hoping someone can help me because I'm about to lose my mind. I
just bit the bulet and scrapped Windows completely, and installed a new
drive and installed Red Hat 9. I'm slowly forcing myself to use Linux,
hopefully for good. But I'm mgetting VERY discouraged with the video.

I'm running on a P4-1.7ghz with 256mb of ram. All is working well
except my X session keeps either 1) freezing so I have to hit
CTRL-ALT-BKSPC to restart the X session, or 2) the X session locks hard
so I have to reset the PC.

Looking in Google on this, it seems everyone in the world who's posted
about this has an ATI card. And you guessed it, so do I. I have the
Radeon 9600 Pro. I tried using the ATI driver and was having the same
troubles. So now I've uninstalled it and am just using the VESA driver,
1024x768, 256 color as a test. It's STILL locking up every few minutes!
When checking with ATI on this, they say to contact xfree86.

Here's the tail of my XFree86 log. The main things I see as being a
problem are VBESetVBEMode failed and the X message about being rejected
from local host. I'm basically a newbie when it comes to this. Can
anyone give me some direction? Thanks!

You might need to type ./Xinstall.sh, if you're not, even after changing
to the directory where it is. Otherwise you have to set up the path.

Sorry I aint replied for a while Mark. Been so busy of late with other
projects. I didn't really understand what you meant about how to get these
modelines above. But I got the jest of the idea and used xvidtune and
fetched the current modelines that x was using from there. And it printed
out the ones that I had specified before. I know these modelines work aswell
because If say I don't mention the one for 1680x1050 it doesn't do the res.
What seems to be happening is that the radeon drivers seems to be using it's
own modelines and sync values from somewhere else and ignoring what I'm
telling it. And although I haven't specified anything out of the ordinary
for the drivers I appear to be still having the problem.

Hi Shameem
That kind of error message means that X can't talk to the font server it is
expecting to find listening on port 7100. This either means you've not got
an X font server (so shouldn't be trying to use it), or it's died. To
restart if it is dead:

# /etc/init.d/xfs start
Hope this helps.

Re: [XFree86] how does X find modelines?

2004-07-19 Thread Warren Paul
Ok, time for another little try-out. :) Try adding the display size of your
panel to your monitor section, using:
DisplaySize width height
where width and height need to be defined in milimeters.
I tried that out and although it didn't fix the problem it has given me some
other interesting ideas on a different note. Thanx :)

Also, it might have to do with your resolution not being a standard one.
Hence
it may not find all requested modes, and hence dives into this piece of the
code. You said it worked if you only requested 1600x1200? Does it also work
if you request 1600x1200 on top of all the other resolutions?
This you are gonna find real interesting. I went searching on the gentoo
forums and found loads of people who have been having this similar problem
with my laptop. And I found a guy that instead of giving X and undoable res
like 1600x1200, he just simply didn't put in any mode and X came up with the
same results as me. But what is peculiar is when I tried this for my self i
noticed X defaulted to 640x480, which I know I tried and it did not do these
results but rather gave me the white screen. So I tried it on my own by
specifying the mode 640x480 and it gave me a white screen. Why would X do 2
different things like that?

what I'm not exactly clear about is whether X is really using the modeline
values on this last line or not, but it seems to me that you didn't give it
a chance to realyl use 1600x1200 correctly since you didn't include a
modeline inpt for that setting. (And I understand that you probably didn't
want to...)
The modelines that I got where the ones I got when x printed them out in the
log for the mode 1600x1200.

I've heard of other people that have had problems with modeline settings
causing strange sorts of problems. I'm sure you're sick of all of this, but
have you gone through a number of other (slower) refresh rates?
You see to begin with this is what I really did. I tried hundreds of
different modelins, and refreshes galore. All thanks to linux modile which
conveniently had a subsection for 168x1050 wsxga screens. I basically tried
all those and any others I found on the net. But none worked. Then One day I
just happened to stumble on the 1600x1200 mode and realized it worked and
printed out the modelines. So I copied those modelines into myxconfig and
walla! 1680x1050! So it did actually do the 1600x1200 but some of the screen
on the right wasn't there and I couldn't see the bottom.
Hope that helps show where they all came from. Guess I should have explained
all this in the beginning. Just didn't want to write a Theses :-)

Hmm, I didn't get that part from the email you sent with the configuration
and
log files. The logfile that worked, which lines were uncommented?

	Modes	"1600x1200"
#	Modes "1680x1050" "1400x1050" "1280x1024" "1280x960" "1024x768"
"800x600" 640x480"
#	Modes	"1680x1050"

the mode 1600x1200 works fine.
The 1680x1050 1400x1050 etc line is for when everything finally works and to
test that everything works fine. Thats why I have it commented out to save
me writing out al those modes again.
the the 1680x1050 line is just for testing purposes. So when yourself or I
or anyone comes up with an idea I can just uncomment it and comment the
rest. I know it probably aint the best idea and may be confusing, but I've
done this so many times, I just wanted a quicker way :-)

2004-07-15 Thread Warren Paul
I dunno If I have really thanked you for the help, but thanx. This has been
frustrating me no end to get this working.
Now, I noticed the only requested mode you have is 1600x1200 (the other
line
is commented out). When you tried without 1600x1200, did you uncomment the
other line? If not, requested modes would be 0, and the on-chip modes will
be
tested first. With the 1600x1200 on, the on-chip modes probably will not be
tested, since it will most likely find more modes than the 1 requested
mode.
The reason I have those lines commented is for testing. So instead of re
writing everything out again I just comment and uncomment the lines I need.

You could also try turning DCC on, to see if the behaviour changes.
Unfortunately I have also tried that and the ignore EDID option. But still
no luck. I just cannot seem to get X to ignore the onboard modes and what
ever else goes with them and use mine. I'm assuming the problem is that the
on-board modes maybe use different vsync and hsync values and or modelines.
Hence the reason why X is ignoring what I say.

It looks like the TMDS mode checks for available modelines. For 1600x1200
it
cannot find any, so it starts using the modelines you provided. In the 2nd
try it _does_ find a working mode in its BIOS, so it doesn't look any

Hi,
OK, so I am probably still misunderstanding you and I no longer have
your original post. Also not sure I can help...

My problem was that XF86config was choosing to put a bunch of modelines
in the config file which worked but looked lousy. For instance, in the case
of my laptop which has a 1280x800 native resolution to the screen it was
setting things up for 1280x1024 which looked blurry. This page allowed me
to correctly set the resolution I wanted which XF86config wasn't able to do
for me.

If I'm understanding your question above "why does it work when I tell
x to do a size it can't do", then I think the answer is that X can do all
sizes, in some virtual manner, but whether those sizes look good is another
thing. In my case it did 1280x1024 even though my screen doesn't. X did
some sort of virtual mapping to make it fit.

Again, I guess I'm not sure that I've answered your real question but I
have, however, exhausted the limits of my understand of this subject!! ;-)

Cheers,
Mark

Cheers Mark :-)
I really Appreciate your help any ways. The problem really is that X is
getting the correct mode of 1680x1050. And everything looks crystal clear
without any gliches. The problem is that It will only do this when I give it
a size I guess my screen can't handle more than x can't eg 1600x1050. then
It works out the correct modelines and everything for me and everything
looks great. But when I tell it to do 1680x1050 it goes on the blitz and
doesnt want to work. My question then Is what is X doing when it works it
out, that I'm not doing when I tell it manually?

Kind regards
Warren Paul

reI used this page to great success.
Good luck,

Thanx Mark
Thanx Mark but as you can see X has already produced these modelines, and
they work fine when I use the 1600x1200 mode. I guess My question really
isn't how? but rather why does it work when I tell x to do a size it can't
do rather than me telling it what size is right? I hope I'm making sense ...
kinda.

Thanx for the reply though and the help

[XFree86] Laptop display confusion with thinkpad and external monitor.

2004-07-09 Thread Paul Hands
Hi,

I just converted my Thinkpad T30 from SuSE 9.0 to 9.1. Now, the display
will only start up with 1024x768 resolution, although the external
monitor is a 1280x1024 LCD panel. It all worked perfectly happily at
SuSE 9.0, which uses a different version of XFree86.

It seems that the X server is always going to the laptop's built in LCD,
which is 1024x768, and using that as the primary device - even though
it's connected to the external monitor. I don't know enough about the
config file to start editing it without some guidance.

Thanks,

Paul

[XFree86] troubleshooting

2004-05-28 Thread Paul Vasos

Dear XFree86 stuff,

My Mandrake computer won't start the KDE windows
manager, the last error it gives when I try startx is
 'can't find fixed fonts'

I attach the XFree86.9.log file, as you advise,
hoping you can find the origin of the troubleshooting.

Thank you in advance!

Paul

problem solved (Re: [XFree86] odd font problem, under tiny-X )

2004-05-06 Thread Paul Fox
i've fixed the problem shown in the urls down below. my framebuffer
was running at 8bpp. i modified the driver to support 16bpp (i was
doing this for unrelated reasons) and the font problem cleared up completely.

i'd say that this points at an obvious bug somewhere in the font rendering
code. i really don't know where it would be, however.

is there somewhere more "official" i should file this as a bug report?

[XFree86] X error

2004-05-06 Thread Paul Beckman

Hey, I have a problem with X windows not starting. I have Big-Brother and
Cacti running on this server and it ran out of disk space. I cleaned some stuff
up and now have about 100 megs free but X windows will not start. The error log
is attached. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also let me state that I am
relativity new to Linux so I am working on limited knowledge but I am not
afraid!
This is the short error...

Fatal server error:

[XFree86] Re: odd font problem, under tiny-X

2004-05-04 Thread Paul Fox
replying to my own post, with more data:

i tried a full-blown X server instead of the tinyx/kdrive server,
and everything worked fine. i've also discovered that the "smudging"
of the fonts changes depending on what font i choose, and how big
i choose to make it. "courier 16" looks very different than "courier 14",
for instance. (the screenshots in the links below are "times roman 14",
by the way.) so i'm thinking this problem has to do with font scaling.
tiny-x doesn't seem to support a font server -- fonts must be served
locally.

so now i'm trying to figure out how to tell my app (it's a gtk2 app)
to use a non-scaled font. is there magic syntax i can put in .gtkrc-2.0
to prevent the use of scaled fonts?

a more list-specific question: i assume my tiny-x doesn't support
font servers because when i used "-fp 'tcp/192.168.1.11:7100'", it
said it "discarded" that element of the font path. am i right that
tiny-x doesn't support a font server?

[XFree86] odd font problem, under tiny-X

2004-05-02 Thread Paul Fox
well, it's odd to me, anyway, but i'm hoping someone else will
think it's entirely normal, and tell me just what to do.

i've installed the Xfbdev server from the current Debian "testing"
release. the hardware is an embedded MIPS little-endian device, though
it's a complete enough system to run "real" debian -- not a stripped
version of some sort.

i've captured three samples of the problem. the first two are
from the "roadmap" application, the third is the "minitime" clock running
under matchbox's mbdock app. the fourth is of rxvt, and shows that not
all text is affected -- just the title bar. you'll also note that in
most cases, not every character is affected.

http://www.foxharp.boston.ma.us/tmp/about.jpg
http://www.foxharp.boston.ma.us/tmp/menus.jpg
http://www.foxharp.boston.ma.us/tmp/minitime.jpg
http://www.foxharp.boston.ma.us/tmp/rxvtprob.jpg

can someone suggest what this system might be missing, or, if it looks
like a bug, where it might live, and how to work around it?

i'm not much of an X11 guy, so thanks very much in advance!
(which also means i'm not sure what extra information i should be
providing about my system to help folks try to answer this.)

I have just built Xfree86 on my sparc64 and it build mesa just fine.
However when I build mesa from DRI I get all these global .register errors
when I get the the sparc asm. I was just wondering if the fix for this
problem was ever going to be backported to mesa? Once that happens I
should be able to build the DRI tree for my mach64 on this old sparc.
Off-hand, I don't know what differences there might be in the code.
Perhaps you could do some comparisons and report back.

[XFree86] Nec Versa FP440 - Nividia GForce2MX

2004-02-26 Thread John Paul
Hi,
I don't if I'm at the right support address but I would configure a
laptop with nvidia GForce2MX card under Linux RedHat 9.

I've download the last pkg.run from the nvidia server and installed it
without any matter. I set in the XF86Config file "Driver" "nvidia"
rather than "Driver" "nv".
The laptop display works fine but I'm not able to use the external
connector with a video projector. I got a random text screen in majority
blue on the external screen when I used the "nv" driver. If I use the
"nvidia" driver, the LCD works but the CRT seems to be in error and
remains blacK.
So, I've tried to set the TwinView Option without any success.

Is it a matter with the material itself. We have some identical laptop
with exactly the same problem.

For now, I resolved temporarily the presentation matter by the use of
the vesa driver. So, I lose all the advantages of fast video card.

I 've joined to this mail the XF86Config + the XFree86.0.log

[XFree86] Server Crash

2004-02-15 Thread Paul Hawthorne
Hi all, I have a problem I need some help with. First I will
give some info on my setup. I'm using XFree86 version
4.3.99.902 (4.4.0 RC 2) on Mandrake Linux 9.2 My graphics
hardware is a SiS 630. Here is my problem.

I was re-installing the msfonts and jeft the room for a few
minutes. While I was out my young son was messing with the
computer. As I came in and told him to stop, he accidently
kicked the reset button. After rebooting, my system will only
boot to a command prompt. My X server is messed up it seems. I
looked in the XFree log and this is the error at the end:

/start error message
Could not init font path element /usr/local/share/fonts,
removing from list!
Could not init font path element /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts,
removing from list!
Could not init font path element /usr/share/fonts/ttf, removing
from list!

Fatal server error:
could not open default font 'fixed'

(II) SIS90): Restoring by setting old mode 0x47
/end error message

I'm not sure if he accidently deleted something, or if something
happened when I re-installed the msfonts from Tex's site. I hope
this is a simple fix. Anyone know what I need to do to correct
this? I'm also attaching the complete log file.

Thanks in advance
Paul.

this, although I am certain that it is there because I can select it.
Thus I think it may possibly be in my config file. Thanks for taking a
look. Also, are there any depth posibilites other then 8 16 and 24?

Best,
Paul

[XFree86] Problem with color fonts under XFree86-4.3.0-2.90.43 rpm with NVIDIA drivers

2003-12-11 Thread Paul Bilodeau
Greetings,

I just upgraded a couple of workstations to Red Hat 9, using the
XFree86-4.3.0-2.90.43 rpms, and now color fonts don't appear on the
virtual terminals when I use the NVIDIA drivers installed via 'sh
./NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4496-pkg2.run'. Before, when I installed the
NVIDIA drivers, everything worked just fine. Now, after installing the
NVIDIA drivers, the color entries from an 'ls' command are displayed as
black on a black background. The only reason I know about these entries
is that there are apparent gaps from a plain 'ls' listing. If I move
the mouse over the black on black entries, I can see them one letter at
a time.

Attached is the full XFree86 log file.

Thank you,
Paul

Re: [XFree86] X configuration for a 25Khz arcade monitor

2003-11-18 Thread Paul Nielsen

You might study http://en.tldp.org/HOWTO/XFree86-Video-Timings-HOWTO/
It has most of the details.  The refresh is (dot clock Hz)/(total x *
total y) and the scan is dot clock Hz)/(total x --the largest number in
the x part of the modeline)  There may be limitations on the graphic
card and the monitor, of course.

I've played around with the modeline generator at
http://xtiming.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/xtiming.pl, but I haven't
been able to come up with a modeline at exactly 25KHz. Simplest
I could get away with was somewhere between 30 and 31KHz. I
have my doubts whether you can run resolutions that high *cough*
at a frequency that low.

I still have a question about this (a silly one because I don't
know much about technical details related to video frenquencies)

Why isn't it possible to run this resolution at a lower frequency
and why isn't possible to run a lower resolution (eg 256x224) at
a higher frequency (25Khz) ? Where is the limitation ?
In the graphics cards or is it simply the way frequencies should work ?
If the limitation is about graphic card, does exists some special cards
which allows to do such things ?

PS: sorry for these newbie questions, but I previously googled a lot on
this subject and found nothing, i'm deseperated :)

[XFree86] Dell M60 1680x1050 LCD has ripples

2003-11-16 Thread Paul Nielsen
We have two Dell Precision M60 with WSXGA screen and NVIDIA QuadroFXGo
700 chipset.

I have Mandrake 9.2 installed, and the NVIDIA XFree86 Driver 1.0-4363,
built for this kernel.

With the modeline:

Modeline "1680x1050" 145.2 1680 1784 1968 2200 1050 1051 1054 1100

(This gives exactly 60Hz--any other refresh rate is worse, and the
windows XP driver reports 60 Hz.)

startx will start a windows session, but after a few seconds the edges
of the windows, and text within develops ripples along the vertical
edges, and it gradually becomes worse. When X windows is killed, the
display may continue to be slightly ripply for a short while. The
Xvidtune doesn't find any good settings.

Does anyone know if this LCD panel requires other special settings of
the NVIDIA driver, or some other modeline?

Thanks,

Paul Nielsen

[XFree86] Who maintains the monitor databases?

2003-11-09 Thread Paul Elliott

I know that several non-XFree origanizations maintain databases of
monitors, to help autoconfigure XF86Config for various third party
installation procedures.

What are these lists and who maintains them? Who do I send data
on my non listed monitor to? Does XFree keep such a list?

Thank You.

Hi Mark

Just to let you know I solved this problem by installing an old nvidia
driver.
It failed with nvidia drivers at release 4363 and 4496 but works fine with
4349.run
(NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4349.run)

"nv" is the driver for NVIDIA chips that ships with XFree86.
If you have XFree86, you already have a version of the "nv" driver.
However, before XFree86 4.3, the "nv" driver did not support
digital flat panels. If you have XFree86 4.3, just make sure you
have:

   Driver "nv"

in the Section "Device" in the XF86Config file.

[XFree86] ATI Mach64 direct rendering

Ok,

I've been trying to get DRI working on an ATI Mach64. It's running
RedHat 8.0 and I just used up2date to ensure I got all new code, plus
the new kernel. I've attached all the obligatory files for your review.

RE: [XFree86] Black screen starting Xfree86 with Mandrake 9.1

2003-10-14 Thread Jean-Paul Lucas
Hi Mark

I installed the 4496 version but this new driver fails to load.
I checked the /lib/modules//kernel/drivers/video directory
and the new driver
is there.
I installed the
NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4496-pkg2.run --kernel-name='2.4-21-0.13mdk' with no
error.
found no problem in /etc/modules.conf as well

from dmesg , the following error occurs init_module: register failed

How can I get the "nv" driver ?

Cheers

Jean-Paul

We cannot support NVIDIA's binary drivers on this list. We
can help you get the "nv" driver that comes with XFree86 working
though. If you wanted to use NVIDIA's binary drivers you should
try their newest version (4496).

[XFree86] Probably Lost Window Manager [was SOLUTION: ATI: no screens available RedHat 9.00 (and d other problems)]

2003-10-14 Thread Risenhoover, Paul
Solomon -- I'm looking back at your original post and it looks like you probably
overwrote some Gnome (or KDE) configuration files. It sounds like when you start your
machine you're loading twm (see if you've got a process that ends in "wm" -- it's the
window manager).

You need to configure your system to start another window manager. That's beyond the
scope of this document but I'l lhelp you if you AIM me.

kalarmd is probably KDE Alarm Clock Daemon

would this also resolve hardware acceleration issues or only for missing

[XFree86] SOLUTION: ATI: no screens available RedHat 9.00 (and other problems)

2003-10-14 Thread Risenhoover, Paul
Hi All,

There have been a lot of questions about an issue with the new XFree86
that comes with RedHat 9.0. Specifically, the driver ignores the
modeline and eithe (a) can't find a working screen (ATI) or (b) can't
drive a non-standard resolution.

Other symptoms are that the Modelines set in XFree86Config are being
ignored.

This issue is in bugzilla and it's marked as resolved. I had the same
problem but was able to find a work around.

Here's what I did.

1 - Go to http://www.xfree86.org/~alanh/drivers/ and get the drivers
specific for your configuration and the XFree86 binary. In my case,
with an ATI card, I downloaded the following files:

XFree86
ati_drv.o
atimisc_drv.o
r128_drv.o

(These might all not be necessary).

2. Go to /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers and replace the existing
drivers with the ones you just downloaded. You should save the old
ones, probably.

3. Go to /usr/X11R6/bin and replace the copy of XFree86 you find there
with the one you just downloaded.

4. Reboot your machine. In my case, I needed to power down and back up.

That should do it. As soon as my machine came back up it was working
perfectly. The fonts look better too.

Let me know if you have any questions and I'll try to help out.

Best,
Paul

press the
power off button then start Mandrake 9.1 in failsafe mode to look into the

Are you running these programs under WINE or under MS Windows?

If you're running MS Windows, then you are certainly on the wrong mailing
list.

If under WINE, you are only probably on the wrong mailing list; have you
tried the appropriate WINE list already?

[XFree86] How do I install 4.3.0 for cygwin?

2003-07-01 Thread Paul Farmer

The current release of cygwin distributes release
4.2.0 of xfree86. I want to be able to resize my
root window so I want to install release 4.3.0 of
xfree86. I downloaded the install Xinstall.sh program
and it told me to download the extract.exe program.
I download an extract.exe program and
tried once again. This time it told me that I had
the wrong version of extract.exe. I ran sh Xinstall.sh -check
and it reported the following:

CYGWIN_NT-5.1 version 1.3.22(0.78/3/2) architecture
i686.

I cannot find this extract.exe.

Can some one help.

I am running cygin on a multihead xp
computer.

Thanks,

[XFree86] ATI 9000 Pro problems resolved? Linux kernels do not support 5591/5592 AGP chipsets

2003-06-21 Thread Paul Pikowsky
I have been having no end of problems trying to get my ATI 9000 Pro video card going
and I
think I have discovered the problem. I have been trying some different kernels to see
if
that changed anything. Using "make menuconfig" and "make xconfig" from a GUI in the
kernel's
source directory, I found the following information:

This part is under the "Character devices" section,

__
/dev/agpgart (AGP Support) (AGP)

AGP (Accelerated Graphics Port) is a bus system mainly used to
connect graphics cards to the rest of the system.

If you have an AGP system and you say Y here, it will be possible to
use the AGP features of your 3D rendering video card. This code acts
as a sort of "AGP driver" for the motherboard's chipset.

If you need more texture memory than you can get with the AGP GART
(theoretically up to 256 MB, but in practice usually 64 or 128 MB
due to kernel allocation issues), you could use PCI accesses
and have up to a couple gigs of texture space.

Note that this is the only means to have XFree4/GLX use
write-combining with MTRR support on the AGP bus. Without it, OpenGL
direct rendering will be a lot slower but still faster than PIO.

You should say Y here if you use XFree86 3.3.6 or 4.x and want to
use GLX or DRI. If unsure, say N.

This driver is available as a module. If you want to compile it as
a module, say M here and read . The
module will be called agpgart.
---

Under that section is code for various chipset support and here is my chipset for my
ASUS
P4S533 motherboard,

__
SiS chipset support (AGP_SIS)

This option gives you AGP support for the GLX component of
XFree86 4.x on Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] chipsets.

Note that 5591/5592 AGP chipsets are NOT supported.

You should say Y here if you use XFree86 3.3.6 or 4.x and want to
use GLX or DRI. If unsure, say N.
--

And of course the AGP chipset on my ASUS P4S533 (SiS645DX) motherboard is precisely the
5592/5592 AGP chipset. I found that information in KDE's Control Center under
Information ->
PCI. Note that I have tried the following kernels and they all say this, 2.4.18-14,
2.4.20,
2.4.21, 2.5.72.

Can anyone confirm that this would render ATI's or anyone elses ATI drivers unusable
for my
9000 Pro ATI video card and indeed any AGP card?

If so, my hearty apologies to ATI, XFree86 and anybody else who suffered my
indignation over
not being able to apply the drivers after so much work.

I really would like some independent confirmation that this is in fact the problem.
Anybody
have an experience with or knowledge of this?

Paul

timings via analog VGA (the signaling is VGA like most modern HD set top
tuners, only the timings are TV standards, so this isn't a TV out
issue). North American 1080i signals are 33.75k horz, 60.00 vert
interlaced, around 1125 total lines with 1080 active lines. If this is
a limitation of the Matrox card, is there a well supported card which is
able to do this?

My modeline looks like this (closest I was able to get to the timings):

Modeline"[EMAIL PROTECTED]" 77.60 1920 1952 2240 2272 1080 1104 1110
1135 interlace

Which seems to cause:

(II) MGA(1): Not using mode "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" (bad mode
clock/interlace/doublescan)

And the complete output from the server looks like this:

Login terminals load ~/.bash_profile to change shell settings; non-login
terminals (like xterms) load ~/.bashrc . So you probably have no
~/.bashrc file.

Create ~/.bashrc and add a line like this:
export PS1='[EMAIL PROTECTED]:\w\$ '

If you don't like that prompt, "man bash" and search for PROMPTING to
see other options.

You probably want to create a ~/.Xresources file to handle that. "man
X" and search for RESOURCES to see what the file should look like; "man
xterm" will tell you the specific resources that you need to set.

Do you say that you actually got your 9000 Pro working in XF86 4.2/4.1?
That's what I am running now (XF96 4.2 in the Red Hat 8.0 installation)
and I am having no luck whatsoever. Were you able to use your
fglrxconfig generated XF86Config file without editing it? If you were
able to get your 9000 Pro card fully functioning in XF86 4.2, I would
like to know how you did it.

Thanks Paul.
I seem to figured out these things: might be useful to you too.

fglrx only works with XF86 4.2 /4.1, in fact , I got it working
(with TV-out (kind of dual head)) before. but doesn't work with
XF864.3, because XF864.3 uses a totally different way to load
driver
modules specified in the "Device" section: it goes to
/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/* instead of
/lib/modules/2.4.20/kernel/drivers/char/drm
so when I put flgrx in the /lib/modules... XF86 4.3 says can't
find
the module, and if i put it in /usr/X11R6/.. it says the module
format is wrong, seems 4.3 put the driver into two parts, one in
/usr/X11R6 , and that calls the drm unit ( kernel module) in
/lib/modules .

if you want , you can go into your XFree86.0.log and search
"device
not found" and see what file it was trying to load, maybe it
will
help.

RE: [XFree86] radeon 9000 dual head work at all?

2003-04-12 Thread Paul
You seem to be using a different driver then the one that fglrxconfig
sets up for me with my ATI *built* 9000 Pro. I am given the fglrx
driver. But if its any comfort, dual head doesn't seem to work for mine
either. I can't even get a screen with my fglrxconfig created
XF86Config file. I just get a "device not found" error. I've given up.
Search "Paul" with ATI 9000 Pro at the mail archives to see all the
stuff I've tried to get things working.

hi all:
maybe this problem has been asked many times before,
but I never see a definitive answer,
I have a Saphire Radeon 9000 128M video card, now I connect it
to
both an LCD and a CRT, then I use the "radeon.o" from XF86 4.3 ,
( I
currently use XF86 4.3 the latest CVS), but the two screens are
exactly the same, I tried xinerama on and off, 1 screen / 2
screen
anybody has an idea?
Thanks a lot

2003-04-05 Thread Paul
When you say that the card was working correctly in BSD, do you mean
just in single display mode? Were you getting functioning multiple
displays?

It is very odd that MS Windows would influence the card that way. Maybe
it changed something in the motherboard's BIOS.

Re: [XFree86] Problem with X server!

2003-04-05 Thread Paul
I agree that it might be better to just use a later distribution of Red
Hat. But if you have limited resources and want to try a few things,
there is a tool called xf86config that you run from the command line
that will ask you for information to create a new XF86Config file. This
is what appears to be your problem. If you don't know what that is, try
the manual pages, "man XF86Config". You will need some information from
your monitor and video card. You need at least the horizontal and
vertical frequencies of the monitor and the type and memory size of your
video card. You should have a good idea of what resolution you want. A
good guess would be 1024x768 at 24 bit color.

You might want to post what kind of card and monitor you have.

Re: [XFree86] Linux 8.0

2003-04-04 Thread Paul
What kind of login prompt are you getting? Is it a graphical prompt or
just a basic text prompt? If you are just getting the best console text
prompt, then your windows system -- the XFree86 server -- has not
started up.

What did you use to chage you desktop? How did you change it?

[XFree86] Performance Tuning

2003-04-03 Thread Paul Yeager
Please be gentle, it's my first post here!

I am trying to improve performance on a Compaq Armada 7710MT Laptop.
This has a (try not to laugh) 150MHz Pentium-MMX, and S3 Aurora 64V+
chipset.

I installed RedHat 8.0, and the XFree86 that came with it. As such,
glxgears was reproting around 24 fps. I downloaded XFree86 4.3.0, and
compiled and installed it, and now I'm lucky to get 20 fps.

I followed the advice in xf86site.def, and copied it to host.def, and
then modified it with the following:

   #define XnestServer NO
   #define XF86CardDriverss3
   #define XInputDrivers mouse keyboard
   #define UseMatroxHal NO
   #define BuildFonts   NO
   #define DefaultGcc2i386Opt   -O2 -mmmx
I compiled with gcc 3.2. All of the changes shown above were made to
decrease server size and/or reduce compile time, except for the gcc
options, which I hoped might improve performance by generating code
specifically for the CPU on my computer.

Questions:

  1. Is there a better way to measure performance than glxgears?
  2. Anyone have any suggestions regarding build or configuration items
 that will increase performance?
Thanks in Advance!

Paul

Re: [XFree86] ATI Dual Display with XFree86 4.2 ....

2003-04-02 Thread Paul
So, I guess it is conclusive. The drivers provided by ATI at their site
are DEFECTIVE. When are we going to get some good drivers? I'm not
going to plug and unplug my monitor every time I boot my computer to get
dual screen. They need to fix their package so that when you install
the rpms, then all you have to do is run fglrxconfig like they tell you
to and that should be the end of the job.

Just for follow up ... Yes, I am seeing fglrx loaded when I run lsmod
from an X terminal. I'm not sure why I wasn't seeing it. Here is my
output from fglrxinfo from an X terminal:

display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: VA Linux Systems, Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa GLX Indirect
OpenGL version string: 1.2 Mesa 3.4.2

The XF86Config file has the BusID line and the Load "dri" lines
commented out so that I can at least get a screen.

Re: [XFree86] X Server Crashes, Unable to get to desktop

2003-04-02 Thread Paul
It says that it can't find your config file:

> (EE) Unable to locale/open configfile

Your configuration file is a file usually called XF86Config. The log
should show somewhere near the top which config file it is trying to
read and where it is trying to read it from. In my Red Hat 8.0
installation, it is located in /etc/X11/XF86Config. From the command
line, you can apply any correctly formatted config file you want with
the command (In Red Hat 8.0) "startx -- -xf86config . See the man pages for startx, XFree86
and XF86Config where a lot is explained.

I am still trying to get my Radeon 9000 Pro installed. I am noticing a
few more things. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling my rpm package.
The first thing I notice is that even though the installation tells you
that the module is loaded, /sbin/lsmod shows you that it isn't. Also,
there is a warning. This is the entire feedback when the installation
is run with "rpm -i --force ./fglrx-glc22-4.2.0-2.5.1.i586.rpm":

Is there something in Linux preventing these modules from being loaded?

Re: [XFree86] ATI Dual Display with XFree86 4.2 _WORKS_!

2003-04-01 Thread Paul
I am impressed and depressed. I assume that you were having the same
"device not found" problem I am having with my ATI Radeon 9000 Pro. I
tried making the changes you suggested with no result. I have not
recompiled the kernel yet. And I haven't seen anything like a
suggestion in the documentation that I should recompile the kernel. I
am not seeing the agpgart module when I lsmod. Is that what they are
talking about? Can you refer me to a reliable procedure to recompile
the kernel? I have already run the two make scripts in the
/lib/modules/fglrx directories. Does that ruin any chance of a good
recompile of the kernel? If I went through all that, do you think I
will have to go through the same weirdness with the monitor cable? It
would not be worth it.

ATI should be ... chastised ... for posting those "drivers". The only
thing they are good for is driving people crazy.

[XFree86] ATI Radeon 9000 Pro driver installation problems: Another clue?

2003-04-01 Thread Paul
Here are the results of fglrxinfo:

display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: VA Linux Systems, Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa GLX Indirect
OpenGL version string: 1.2 Mesa 3.4.2

Again, this is the problem I am having:

I have gone through all the procedures in the documentation to make sure
I have the right rpm package for my Red Hat 8.0 installation. I install
the package using "rpm -i --force ". I apply fglrxconfig to
generate a config file. I try all four possible display configurations
and get "device not found" fatal errors on each one. XFree86 will not
start up with the config file generated by fglrxconfig.

I am also finding that when I run lsmod, fglrx does not show up. But,
when I insert it manually with "insmod fglrx", it makes no difference,
XFree86 fails with the same errors.

Any and all clues that help me successfully install these drivers would
be appreciated.

[XFree86] How do I install the drivers from ATI for my ATI Radeon 9000 Pro?

2003-03-31 Thread Paul
I have gone through all the documentation at the site. There are the
"installation tips" and the "driver release notes". I have gone through
all this documentation several times and tried just about everything
over and over again. I have tried running the make scripts in the
module directory. I thought I was having problems with the config
files. What am I supposed to do to get these drivers successfully
installed?

* ---

This is a brief description of the different components
of the ATI FireGL 8700/800 XFree86/Linux driver package.
Here you will find some hints on what you need to download
befor you can install, startup and run your XFree86 system.

Information on basic parameters of your target system.

*** How to match the XFree86 version?

Currently ATI FireGL drivers for Linux are available for
XFree86 4.1.0 and XFRee86 4.2.0.
The drivers will only work with the XFree86 versions for which
they were built and will verbosely refuse to run on other versions.

To find out which XFree86 version you do have, please
download the script 'Check.sh' from our servers and run it:

sh Check.sh

This will report the XFree86 version that is present
on your system.

You can obtain XFree86 full releases or updates from
(1) http://www.XFree86.org or
(2) the download site of the vendor of your Linux distribution

*** How to match the c runtime library version?

Currently ATI provides Linux drivers for only one version
of the c runtime library:

- glibc22 (also known as libc62)

To find out which c library you have, download the script
'Check.sh' and run it:

sh Check.sh

This will report the c runtime library version that is present
on your system.

*** Which packaging format are the drivers available?

ATI FireGL provides the driverrs in only one standard packaging
format. Its the widespread RPM packaging standard which is well
known in the Linux community. Respective files are named "*.rpm"
and are just called RPMs. Its assumed that this is the method
that serves the needs our customers best.

The typical characteristics of the provided package formats are:

- RPM package (rpm):

RPMs also have some advantages in normal use:
with nice GUI tools you can easily manage updates, installation checks,
repairs and removal of packages.
Since most Linux distributions have based their code on the RPM
system, RPM is considered the up-to-date method. You may need to
download the readme.txt for instructions in addition to the driver RPM.

Customers that need specific variations of this packages should
be able to extract this package on a Linux compute and repackage
it into the packaging format and chunk size that matches their needs.

Re: [XFree86] ATI 9000 Pro in Red Hat 8.0 with ATIdrivers:Multiheadhas dark monitor

2003-03-31 Thread Paul
Yes, I see your problem.

I've had a little experience with this. In Red Hat 8.0, you must have
the Kernel Development part of the Development section of the package
manager installed. To compile software to run on Linux, you usually
just run those make scripts. But also, you have to set up your system
to use the modules once they are compiled. The scripts should do that
and maybe they have. I am going to investigate further and I'll post
what I find. If you just want to do the compile, all you have to do is
run the make.sh script in the build_module directory and then run the
make_install.sh script in the next directory up as I explained below.
Look at www.tldp.org for some HOWTOs on how to install the modules once
they are compiled. There is probably some things on compiling for the
kernel there too.

I am a little irritated about the whole situation. The only reason I
purchased this card is because I found drivers in an rpm package at the
ATI site. It was a mistake I will not make again.

Re: [XFree86] ATI 9000 Pro in Red Hat 8.0 with ATIdrivers:Multihead has dark monitor

2003-03-31 Thread Paul
I had a look at the directories and files installed by the rpm package.
I then tried running the make scripts. Since there was no documentation
whatsoever, not even in the scripts themselves, I did what is most
typical for make scripts. I ran the make_install.sh script at the
directory closest to root in the /lib/modules/fglrx/ directory. I then
tried running the other make.sh script I found in the
/lib/modules/fglrx/build_mod/ directory. This script then told me to go
run the make_install.sh script which I did again.

I then ran fglrxconfig again, but the resulting XF86Config file still
does not work and the symptoms have not changed. Unless something was
messed up by running the scripts in the wrong order, I'll say this is
not the solution to the problem.

Awaiting further instructions, Paul

Yes. That is the whole point of an rpm package. You apply "rpm -i
" and you are done. Why wasn't it just tarred files?

Are we supposed to compile everything?

Re: [XFree86] Linux 8 install fails on xfree86

2003-03-30 Thread Paul
Could you explain in greater detail what do you mean by "unsized the
disk"? What is your hardware configuration and how was it different for
each installation? Did you select "everything" when the package manager
came up in the Red Hat 8.0 installation? If your hard drive was too
small, it might have ignored that and just installed what it could.
I've also had X Windows problems trying to squeeze a big installation on
to a small hard drive. It is possible to install XFree86 without any
windows managers. In other words, the actual programs that give you a
GUI are not completely installed. XFree86 does not do that. Gnome,
KDE, twm and the rest are what do that.

2003-03-30 Thread Paul
Post your XF86Config file. Just a hunch, but if you have a spare
monitor around, try another monitor. If you don't, try entering the
Horiz and Vert frequencies yourself. You might be able to get that
information from www.monitorworld.com.

Re: [XFree86] Problems with changing resolution

2003-03-30 Thread Paul
I think I've figured this one out. If you list the screen resolutions
(in the Screen section) with a higher resolution AFTER a lower
resolution, then the first resolution in the list will be the default
with the highest resolution in the list being the resolution of the
virtual display that always shows up under these circumstances whether
you asked for it or not.
