[Xpert]Screen goes blank on console switching

2002-10-09 Thread Alexey Dokuchaev

Hi Xperts,

Under my FreeBSD 4-STABLE, XFree86 4.2.0, ATi R128 video card, and ViewSonic E771
monitor, I experience the following problem.

Normally, I run my console at 800x600 VESA mode (text reso is 100x37).
Under X, I run 1280x1024x24@66Hz.

The problem is that when I switch from X to ttyv0, occasionally my screen
goes blank, and monitor LED goes yellow. I than have to issue
"vidcontrol VESA_800x600" command again to restore proper video mode.

Can this be a bug in driver, DRI code (I use drm-kmod-0.9.5_1 for FreeBSD
with trunk X' ATi drivers), or my monitor? I'd like to investigate
further, anyone can give pointers of how to start? 8-)

Thanks.

P.S. My XFree86.log is attached.

There are (leaked) specs for this card of yours, so you probably could
hack the driver yourself. The problem is that those are under NDA and
thus not generally available.

If you are interested in this in any way, you should contact Keith
Packard since he had (recently) the Savage specs available at his site
(www.keithp.com). I don't have his email address handy right now, but
he surely reads this list.

Dunno. Especially if you are talking about Linux kernels, since I don't
run Linux anywhere near. [Hint: FreeBSD is the way to go :-P]

Nevertheless, I'd like to hear from someone competent enough WRT this

Not sure whether all of there already were merged, but, anyways, AFAIK,
the following is in the schedule for 4.3.0:

* Xft2 + fontconfig
* Mesa 4
* GATOR drivers for ATI cards (gatos.sf.net)
* Latest DRI code (dri.sf.net)
* etc ;-)

There are only the most viable for me, there might be dozens of lesser
ones, surely.

Micro$oft could not even come up with their own implementation, they've
licensed the core code from Citrix in the first place AFAIK.

However, note how poorly miccies did they Terminal Service -- it's
limited to 8 bpp, is really slow, unable to transport sound, etc...
The same thing Citrix did gave me far better and pleasant experience.

Miccies just suck. X is far more mature, and simply better solution.
The *only* thing XFree86 lacks for *me* as FreeBSD user and not Radeon
owner, is poor support for Quake3 :) But I do not blame XFree people, I
actually do blame nVidia guys, as their MX400 card collects dust on the
bookshelf of mine. I cannot stop wondering why they do not just go out
and release the specs, bringing a lot more [FreeBSD] people to their
products, but that's a whole different story.

[Xpert]Strange kernel messages from DRM

2002-04-23 Thread Alexey Dokuchaev

Hi!

I'm getting two annoying messages when running X on my on FreeBSD
4.5-STABLE (built on 16 March 2002). XFree86 version 4.2.0 from ports.
I have Rage 128 card with 32M on-board, using DRI:

(WW) fcntl(7, F_SETOWN): Inappropriate ioctl for device

I'm also getting the following messages from kernel (must be drm-kmod
built from the ports, version 0.9.5):

error: [drm:r128_freelist_get] *ERROR* returning NULL!

I'm also experiencing slight lock-ups during performing of
various GL-things (like glxgears, for instance), which is
rather strange.

Can anyone give my some advice for these?

Thanks!

Far not all drivers were ported from 3.3.6 to 4.x.y. Search www.xfree86.org

I've never included this in my XFree86 config.

Hmmm... It seems that you do have DRI enabled after all.

There are two possible things left:

* try removing that GLcore thing. I suspect that under Linux
you might need it (especially if you Linux distribution vendor
included it for you), but who know? I don't have it under
FreeBSD, and generally we have [mostly] unpatched, almost
  vanilla XFree86 in our ports

* are you that your Mesa installation did not overwrite some of
XFree86 files? I can't tell you that this will certainly
break things for you, but it worth checking

Well, AFAIK, gatos is primarily targeted for creating good and clean
drivers for ATI cards that provide stable 2D-accel and XV for them.
I've never tried compiling ati.2 with DRI, only XFree86 trunk code with
DRI.

Does DRI compiles for you without ati.2 ?

Also, according to recent post to this list, GATOS will be merged into
next XFree86 release. I really look forward to this release, since it
will probably (finally!) get me everything I need to get a decent
desktop under my UNIX.

Oh, "Mesa GLX Indirect" would not yield you any true hardware accell, they
do it software. Which operating system and X version do you use?

It will also help a lot if you cat(1) us your /var/log/XFree86.0.log and
your X server configuration file (XF86Config or X86Config-4, be sure to
provide the right one, grep(1) for "Using config file" in
/var/log/XFree86.0.log).

I believe you'll need Glide for 3dfx cards, though I'd never tried putting
those bits together myself :-)

Hmm... What depth are you running? AFAIR, hw acceleration is only
supported at 16bpp on Voodoo3 cards.

Have you read what's on http://dri.sf.net/ ? I'd generally recommend you
ti do it, if you still not.

You've probably meant "3D acceleration" here, since OpenGL is merely an
API (and you need implementation also, such as Mesa), whether or not it
operates in software more, or uses hardware acceleration, this is the
main question ;-). Under X4, it is most commonly known as Direct
Rendering (DR) Infrastructure (DRI). To check it, issue glxinfo(1)
command, if you see something like this:

name of display: :0.0
display: :0 screen: 0
direct rendering: Yes
^
server glx vendor string: SGI
server glx version string: 1.2

then you have DRI (and thus can play Quake with good FPS). Alternatively,
examine your /var/log/XFree86.0.log, particularly for the line similar to

(II) R128(0): Acceleration enabled

AFAIK, their drivers are mature and stable enough to be included in core XFree86
CVS tree, aren't they? In fact, lots of people expected them in 4.2.0. What
are "official" plans with respect to this subject? Will we see Xft2 and gatos'
