Re: Easy annotate and save PDF in Yojimbo

2008-04-14 Thread Sean Chou
While I do agree with the much repeated sentiment that a simple tool
which does one thing well is a "good thing" and "the UNIX way", I do
think that Yojimbo would benefit from a few changes that would address
some very frequently requested features without sacrificing
simplicity. From watching this list the past however many months
(maybe years), it seems that over 80% of the requests could be
addressed via three basic changes:

First, the true UNIX way is to embrace other tools and to allow them
via piping. Yojimbo could be very easily extended just by allowing the
data to be opened in an external application - automate the export,
open in external application, and save back to Yojimbo process.

Second, although I get the complexity of the hierarchical collections,
allowing a simple one-level of grouping would address well over 80% of
people's nested folders requests and most likely wouldn't require a
dramatic change to the Core Data implementation.

Finally, enhance the tagging implementation. There needs to be an
easier way to browse files by tags, get a tag count, and manage tags
(i.e. find and delete unused tags). One could imagine an iTunes-like
"browse" function to easily filter by tags, type, and label.

I'm with you. Do one thing excellent rather than 100 things poorly.
I'd rather BareBones sticks with the, bare bones, and does it well.
Feature creep turns a small useful application into something coded by
a large company in Redmond.

I'm very happy with what Yojimbo does, it's stability and it's price.
If I want features found in another application I buy that application
rather than ask it to be added into Yojimbo.

I have to wonder, are the people requesting added features into
Yojimbo posting on those other applications support resources and
asking to have Yojimbo features added?

No one can say they are blindsided by Yojimbo's features (or lack
thereof) as they are pretty clearly spelled out on the web site and
you can test it all out for yourself before you purchase.

As they say on woot: "If you don't get the crap you love, love the
crap you get." Though I hardly think Yojimbo is crap!

Re: Easy annotate and save PDF in Yojimbo

2008-04-14 Thread Rhet Turnbull
As others have suggested, I recommend Yep for PDFs. I would not store
PDFs in Yojimbo. Yep stores the PDFs in the filesystem so your
changes would get saved to back to the original file. It functions
much like iPhoto does but for PDFs. For more general file
management, you might look at Leap from the same developers. Leap
leaves your files in the filesystem--it does not use a database like
Yojimbo does. Leap is really a Finder from a different perspective
that happens to manage tags. It is not suitable for storing quick
notes, passwords, etc. like Yojimbo. Both Yep and Leap do use a
database for storing metadata such as tags but not the original files:

http://www.yepthat.com/

You might also consider EagleFiler. It uses the filesystem to store
your files so you could open the PDF in Preview or Skim and changes
would get saved. EagleFiler does support quick text notes too.
Unlike Yojimbo, it supports hierarchical folders and multiple
libraries. But unlike Yojimbo, you can't encrypt individual items in
a library...but you can encrypt an entire library. It also doesn't
support true .Mac syncing but it can store it's library on an iDisk
or other shared disk. EagleFiler also works with TimeMachine and
Yojimbo does not.

http://c-command.com/eaglefiler/

I have been using Yojimbo for a long time and evaluated all existing
options at the time before settling on Yojimbo. At the time, .Mac
syncing was the selling point since I absolutely need access to my
data on multiple computers and don't want to bother with manual
syncing. However, I'm seriously considering a switch to EagleFiler
or some other system because of Yojimbo's lack of support for
TimeMachine (and the developer's attitude that "it's Apple's
problem") as well as the lack of hierarchical folders. After giving
tagging a good faith effort, I still prefer folders or a combination
of the two -- especially since Yojimbo's Smart Collections are not
very smart at all. Based on traffic on this list, Yojimbo seems
unlikely to support either better Smart Collections or hierarchical
folders any time soon.

Re: Easy annotate and save PDF in Yojimbo

2008-04-14 Thread Scott J. Lopez
The simple answer is there isn't any way (to accomplish this without
an ugly series of scripts, hacks and witchcraft). Yojimbo is meant to
simply store, organize (via tags/folders) and display PDF files. There
are no built in editing, annotating, or other facilities to alter PDF
documents within Yojimbo. It simply isn't meant as that type of
product. Anything you do to export a PDF and change it is going to
require re-importing the PDF and may lose any changes if they are not
stored within the PDF itself.

Yojimbo is a wonderful tool but it isn't meant to be the tool for
every job out there. What you're asking for is simply outside the
scope of this tool, what you need is a different tool for your job.

Yes, in the sense that there's an Applescript that will allow you to
open a PDF from Yojimbo in Skim. Like the "View with Preview"
command in Yojimbo, it creates a temporary copy of the file, so any

Yojimbo is better for Quick Notes and some images.

You can use Leap to catalog and find _any_ file type, not just PDFs.
I like using it for images over Yojimbo because leap has a thumbnail
view. Here's what I use Yojimbo and Leap for:

Yojimbo
   Passwords
   Software Serial Numbers
Short Text Notes (e.g. recipes reciepts, articles, lists)
   Clips from Web Pages
Small PDF documents that I don't want to edit or annotate
   RTF Documents
Web Bookmarks & Other URLS (FTP, etc.)

Leap
PDFs that I want to edit or annotate
   Images
   Filemaker
   MindManager
   Numbers
   OmniGraffle
   OmniOutliner
   Videos
(Basically and document format that Yojimbo doesn't support)

Yojimbo is superior to leap in the quick entry department. Between
these two programs I have what I think is the ultimate data
organization system. YMMV, of course.:)
