I'm with Milhouse. Careful on the LSO, though; takes a little more determination and effort if you're not naturally inclined in the symphonic avant gard tradition. Also, Man From Utopia has some great stuff.

Re: [Zappa-List] Early 80s

2005-01-09 Thread Gabriel Artur

-I agree. Zappa's orchestral oriented material in general takes some time to
get into for most people. If you can start out being able to accept and
digest pieces like The Adventures of Greggary Peccary and Revised Music
For Guitar and Low Budget Orchestra, you can kind of ease yourself into
Orchestral Favorites and the orchestral parts of 200 Motels and
eventually move on to, let's say, the arrangements of older material on The
Yellow Shark and eventually be able to arrive at appreciating the LSO
recordings (although I would have to say that's my least favorite batch of
 all the orchestral type material).

Actually I love all of those, except for Yellow Shark (because I heard
so few of it).
My problem is quite the opposite. I asked the early 80s question in
first place because I don't care that much about some of the 'normal'
music fz did. I listened to YAWYI once and found only a couple of
songs or so memorable, along with the Sinister Footwear one obviously.
I didn't discard it, whenever I get a chance to listen to that album
again I will do so, but I'd like to go first for the stuff that
emphasizes instrumentals more in that period.

Re: [Zappa-List] Early 80s

2005-01-09 Thread Mark Darling

That's hard to answer since the instrumentals are usually surrounded by
vocal tracks. I must say, though, that I don't think any of Zappa's stuff is
normal, unless you're comparing it to other Zappa pieces, which you might be
doing. (In fact, you probably are.) Thought it's not restricted to the early
'80s, Strictly Genteel might provide some of what you crave. Man From Utopia
has Moggio, one of my favorites, and We Are Not Alone (less interesting) and
Drowning Witch has TONS of good instrumental shit on it, what with the title
track and Envelopes. I'd go one more and say Teenage Prostitute, too,
because it's abnormal even within the framework of Frank's output, despite
the vocals.
Hoping to have provided some degree of help, Mark

I know this shit's been rubbed into the ground, but I just got my copy last
night and listened to it just now (just got surround last week). Despite the
mostly-uninspiring play list, the last number was practically an out of body
experience for me. Un-fucking-believable! I didn't know there were videos,
either. Where did that Suicide Chump come from? Looked like mostly the same
lineup as the main show to me, plus Ike.

Can't wait till Roxy!

-You're not really going to find albums from that time period with a heavy emphasis on that style of music, but you will find pieces of a more complex instrumental nature on pretty much all of the 80s albums, mixed in with more vocal oriented stuff.

On The Man From Utopia, you can find "Tink Walks Amok", "We Are Not Alone" and "Moggio".. Mothers of Prevention has "Alien Orifice", "What's New in Baltimore?" and some synclavier pieces.. Them or Us has "Sinister Footwear II", a killer noisy guitar solo on the title track and "Marque-son's Chicken", which Drowning Witch has a stunning second half featuring the lengthy title track and "Envelopes".

Oh, and uh... "Shut Up N Play Yer Guitar", obviously.. and the second disc of "You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore Vol. 5" is one you should definitely check out. All 1982 band. Excellent stuff.

-October 13, 1978 (early show). Capitol Theater, Passaic, NJ. One of only a couple shows with both Ike Willis and Patrick O'Hearn in the band at the same time. I'd die to see that whole show released in video format, assuming they *have* the whole thing in the vault and not just that song.

Thanks to SOFA for sending it to me so quickly, and thanks to everyone

It's pouring outside; made much more pleasant by having three hours of

Well, you know, I see it as I see (some of) those studying philosophy,
-or any intellectual topic-, that; when you try to elaborate on a
subject that you really don't have a grip on, it's bound to be a passive

My roommate has been looking for quite some time. The local libraries have

all their copies stolen, and their supplies can not get new copies since

out of print. Likewise with all the record stores in town.
