A ZODB book would be absolutely wonderful. It is a crying shame that it has
been languishing with very sparse and patchy documentation. I'm not deep enough
into it technically to write about it. People that are include Shane Hathaway,
Kapil Thangavelu, Christian Theune, and Roché Compaan (on throughput). Dieter
Maurer and Andreas Jung have used it for very large stores, and Dieter has
implemented the best query tools for it. I think you should do a cookbook with
a chapter per author, as different people have pushed the ZODB in different
directions.

+1 for a Book about ZODB.

There should be one or two chapters about using ZODB with Zope 2, Grok

May be with with non-Zope frameworks like Pylons/Django (I am not sure

I think that is a better idea to focus specifically in ZODB and use one or two
chapters to cover integration with Web Frameworks.

I believe that it's time to put ZODB inside the NoSQL 'hype' and write a book
to show ZODB as a good alternative to CouchDB, MongoDB, etc for Python
developers.

I would like to suggest the following topics in this book:

 - How ZODB works (Pickle, Storages, multi-/Databases, Connection, ...)
 - How to use the persistent objects
 - Index objects and search/get object (catalog, full-text search, etc)
 - Change persistent objects (scheme evolution, automating scripts, ...)
 - Debug and Profile applications
 - Scaling (ZEO, cache, memcache, RelStorage, ...)
 - Manage (pack, backup, fix data corruptions(?), ...)
 - Integrating with Web Frameworks (Django, Zope, Pylons, bfg.repoze, ...)

Cover these topics developing a 'real-world application' example would be
even better.

I really like to see this book but I can't write it because (as you can see)
I don't have the right english skills to write something bigger than an
e-mail message (and I'm not a ZODB expert either).

Thanks,
Osvaldo

PS. I'm working on a django-zodb application to use ZODB with Django. You
can take a look (and contribute) in our GitHub project page:

I'll throw in a +1 for a ZODB book. In particular, I'd love to see/read
about using it outside of Zope 2, ZTK, etc.

Also, a getting to know the ZODB section with diagnostic tools, etc. would
be awesome.

ZODB sharding also comes to mind (courtesy of Elizabeth Leddy's recent
Plone Conf talk).

I don't know who will step forward, but I know that Calvin from Six Feet Up
loves the ZODB, so maybe he will write it :-)

Re: [ZODB-Dev] Author ZoDB Books - Packt Publishing.

2010-05-06 Thread Alan Runyan
I think a ZODB book would be a wonderful edition to Packt's NoSQL
library. I really believe the ZODB book should *not* talk about any
web framework integration. There is plenty of information to convey
about ZODB without talking about integrating it into external
projects. It would be great if the book, at some later date, would
have opportunity to be released under CC license. The ZODB project
needs external facing documentation.

I just got back from a conference where I met one of the MongoDB guys.
Obviously mongo is a different animal. The features I saw that were
interesting:

- Indexing/Querying support.
- Ability to auto - (in/de)crement counters on records.
- Language independent bindings for MongoDB

If a ZODB book is written I would highly suggest detailing a
indexing/querying strategy
Even if it is use zope.catalog/zope.index with some examples.

How about this: I will research and write such book *if* the contract
allows its release under a CC license. Is Packt willing to do that?

[ZODB-Dev] [Blobs] Rsyncing Data.fs/Blob files updated/replace upon object changes?

2010-05-06 Thread Andreas Jung
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

The current backup strategy for backing up a Data.fs with blob storage
seems to be using repozo for the Data.fs and rsync for the blob storage.

Rsyncing the blob storage makes only sense when it would be possible to
restore a particular blob file for a given restoration date.

So: assuming that a persistent object is managed as a blob...what will
happen on the filesystem level with the blob file upon a change to this
object? Will the ZODB create a new blob file with the changed content or
will it override/update the existing one?
