I cant quite afford a TR-909 or 808 yet so Im planning on buying a TR-606 or
TR-707. This is the first drum machine I've ever bought, although I've worked
with others before.
Im particularly interested in the opinions of people who have worked first hand
with these intstruments - which

This is an essay I wrote for a pamphlet printed to go along with
the Richie Hawtin show here last february. Rather than get into
another pissing match with Fast, I'm just going to put this out
for discussion.
The event was called From Zero To One and this is my essay on
the topic, and on techno.
hey westies,
does anyone remember an article in Face magazine a couple of years ago about
Detroit (esp. techno bass/booty bass) being the next big thing and
comparisons to miami bass, etc? anyone know the issue?

Um, neither. The 707 sounds pretty harsh and digital -- the best sounds

I've been unofficially endorsing the Electribe ER-1 drum machine for the
past few months. a lot of people have bought it based on my recommendation
and everyone so far loves it. its perfect for beginners and pros alike. it
does everything you could imagine and more. check it out at the Korg.com
I am also using the Korg Electribe-R for almost a year now and it is a verry
versatile piece of equipment. The ER-1 has a unique sound and is easy to
use. Juan Atkins used it alot on his latest releases. The DEMF Electribe
ER-1 demo can be viewed at http://groovetecg.com/demf.

I would agree with Kent, I have used both in my productions and the 606 is
deffinetly more appealing in sound, sequencing, and special retro fits you
can build into it. Check out the Kenton web site for mods for the 606.

Mind you, a 707 is MIDI, which makes it a great first piece of equipment
for a techno musician to be. 606's have to worry about sync boxes, kenton,
and all that expensive add-on stuff. And yes, the 606 is more expensive
due to its better sounds, cuteness, and modifiability. The 707 couldn't
