KDJ in Crowne Royal ad

I noticed this KDJ slab on a Crowne Royal commercial last night,
unfortunately
the music the commercial was actually playing wasn't Moodymann.

Re: Favorite Carl Craig Remixes

I'm disappointed that no one has tipped the CC / MvO recomposed
reworkings of Ravel's "Bolero" / Mussorgsky's "Pictures From an
Exhibition" on Dutch Gramophone. It starts popping during the
interlude and into Movement 5.

Once, long ago and in a galaxy far away, I used to run the Rotator

I'm sure that 90% plus of these places are now defunct, but it may be
worth googling or calling a couple of the shops.

Last Time I saw Teep was at least 20 years ago, we went and saw Ravi
Coltrane play somewhere in Boston. But alas, we all slide into
normihood over time. I still cherish the several sewer sounds 60 mix
tapes he gave me, one of those tapes introduced me to the music of
Bochum Welt, but that's a whole different story.

I tried to start a label beginning about 15 years ago. I probably would
have kept releasing vinyl, but 9/11 happened which seemed to suck the life
out of the dance vinyl world, I lost my job and didn't have $1500 to press
records, and after that, well, the whole world changed.

But weirdly, I've been selling this record again in Europe through Discogs,
so hey maybe it's time has finally arrived.

I miraculously still had the digital masters on a backup disk, mastered them
digitally, and uploaded them to BandCamp. As far as I can detect, no one
ever digitized and uploaded them before; whether that means I slipped it
into the marketplace just before digital music really caught on, or maybe
DJs thought it qualified as a secret weapon to hoard, I dunno.

2013-10-14 Thread Jeff Davis
https://soundcloud.com/ian-obrien/the-magician-unreleased-2000

Still has that classic big jazzy sound.

From my new album I Was There 1995-2000 released Sept 4th 2013 on
Ultra-Vybe Records Japan. Coming to a digital store soon. This was
spliced together from three 1/4 tapes, lost in 2000, found in an
attic 12 years later in terrible condition. Thanks to digital
technology, I was able to re-assemble it. Quite the miracle, the tapes
were literally falling apart. They were cheap, used reels in the first
place. Thus, this music can only be titled The Magician - music that
made it back from the dead. Dedicated to those who helped and inspired
me to write this in the first place, especially Phil Asher, Kaidi
Tatham, Michael Banks, Dominic Stanton. All of you...you know who you
are and I love you all. Special thanks to Jazz musician Nathan Haines
for playing flute for me. Even though the track Nathan played on was
called Naima, I used the outtakes for 'The Magician.

Has anyone heard the album?

It's an electro drum pattern. The door bell sound immediately reminded me
of a track of the Neptune's Lair album. I guess the rest could sound
similar to some of this material. I'm a Piscean, if that matters at all.
Certainly something in the Drexciyan sound that strikes a chord with me.
Maybe it's something to do with that. Maybe it's something else.

Listened to much hip-hop or dance music? If so, then you would have
undoubtedly heard the sounds of either the Roland 808, 303 or 909 -
but what are they and what do these numbers mean?

BBC Radio 1's Kutski discovers how three small electronic boxes from
the 1980's sculpted the sound of both Hip-Hop and Dance music. He
makes it his mission to track down the team that worked on the Roland
808, 303 and 909 machines to see if they had any idea their inventions
would have such a massive influence on contemporary music.

He plots their integral role in the development of hip-hop, house and
techno; and the myriad of sub-genres that have spawned from these.
Kutski chats to DJ Premier, Richie Hawtin, Seth Troxler, The 2Bears,
Flostradamus and Pete Tong amongst others as he founds out why
producers around the globe continue to be obsessed with these sounds,
more than three decades after they were first created.

I hadn't been so interested in actually listening to the comp, since I
know it all already, until you guys reminded me about the
remastering...It'll be interesting to hear how esp. certain tracks
might sound better/different -- Wavejumper The Countdown Has Begun
come to mind off the top of my head, the 909 in the originals is so
punchy and I think that record is kinda crusty, in a good way and in a
 bad way...

I think some stuff could really benefit in some ways but maybe others
might lose some specialness, even if they sound technically better,
I'm pretty curious now...Especially I think where Ron Murphy was
involved, it'll be interesting to hear the difference because it's
bound to be pretty different...Everything he mastered (like
Wavejumper/UR-030) had his touch, a bit of wildness that fit the music
so well..On the other hand, it wasn't always a 100% success...;)

(313) Dirtbombs Release Detroit Techno Cover Album

2011-01-03 Thread Jeff Davis
from the press release

Nearly ten years after their acclaimed Ultraglide in Black helped
kick-start a renewed interest in all things Detroit and rock-and-roll,
The Dirtbombs are releasing the de facto companion piece, Party Store.

Ultraglide was a covers collection of 60's and 70's soul gems centred
on the ideas of African-American identity and politics of the era (see
Curtis Mayfield's Kung Fu and Stevie Wonder's Living for the
City). All of the songs made an impression on a young, pre-musical
Mick Collins as he listened to them on 45's in the family basement.

Party Store is an assortment of live band interpretations of classic
Detroit techno music of the 80's and early 90's. These are songs
Collins digested when they were originally released - at a time where
he was already making waves with garage-punk legends The Gories. Songs
that run the gamut of subject matter from materialistic future-disco
braggadocio Sharevari (originally by A Number of Names) to cold,
post-industrial isolation of Alleys of Your Mind originally by
Cybotron) through the instrumental optimism of a worldwide house
classic, Strings of Life (originally by Derrick May)... ALL these
themes encapsulate the climate of Detroit both now and at the time of
their initial release. Let it be said clearly...this is a record that
addresses, at the same time, both the past and the future of Detroit.

Breakdancing in NYC, Jit in Detroit, Juke in Chicago, even the

Even more fascinating, I can't think of any analogous dance culture

them all sound their best on the system and you should be golden. No?

more in dub mode or techno but i suspect the latter. echospace is not
deepchord btw, it's a collab between soultek and rod from deepchord. i

surprised that this hasn't shown up yet

http://www.nme.com/news/110519.htm
THE GANG OF FOUR are to reform for a UK tour.

The legendary British post-punk agitators have enjoyed a critical revival
in recent years with new bands like Futureheads, Bloc Party and Franz
Ferdinand citing them as a massive influence.

Now, the original line-up of Jon King, Andy Gill, Dave Allen and Hugo
Burnham have succumbed to public demand and will reunite for the first time
since 1981 for a string of British dates in January 2005.

The dates are:

Manchester Academy (January 23)

Leeds University (24)

Bristol Academy (25)

Birmingham Academy (27)

London Shepherd?s Bush Empire (28)

although it's not his normal record crate these days, he spun a pretty dope
tribute - themed set which was composed of approx 80% james brown tunes about a
month ago at his womb residency in tokyo. he's still capable, even with a
variety of raw materials.

Myths and legends and revisionism aside ;), one of Techno's Kings, Jeff
Mills is playing live, in the flesh, in Melbourne this Friday at The
Metro,
saving us from the legions of trance DJs that have invaded us of late, and
on Monday there is a screening of his innovative new film project The
Three
Ages (an old Buster Keaton classic) in the city with a QA session to
follow. I won't post the full blurb here but you can grab the details from
www.hardwarecorp.com.au

Also Kenny Larkin is back in Oz, and will play Public Office in Melb on
Dec

on some mixes i did i actually put the track list in the IDv2.3 tag, in the
comments tag. it's effectively unlimited space, not visible to RIAA pigs,
etc.

requires a progam like IDtagIt or others for managing tags, and a little
extra work.

i'm thankful to get the mixes, martin, with or without TL's . thanks for
your efforts.

i think it's wise to keep those tracklistings off the web from now on.

trying not to go off on a rant about this so i'll shut up now.

ahem

Just had an idea! People could start putting tracklists in the file titles,
something like this:

Jeff%20Mills%20At%20Super%20Conductor%20-%201.%20Jeff%20Mills%20-%20The%20Be
lls%202.%20Claude%20Young%20-%
20Angelic.mp3

I think Windows now supports 1024 character file names, so it could work (I
think - haven't actually counted), and you'd have the added
benefit of getting the tracklist to scroll in the media player. Dunno if
search bots would be able to pick out anything sensical from a huge file
name like that.

A thought, at any rate...

yes, the beatnik plugin was ahead of it's time, essentially a banked
software synthesizer impemented via a browser plugin. allowed high fidelity
10 min tracks in 100kb. a lot of foresight, but then bandwidth became
virtually infinite / free and.

he also has a fair amount of ties to electronic music, worked and continues
to work closely with gianluigi di costanzo (bochum welt), helped with
production on several of gian's albums.

recently released a limited live CD recorded at his birthday party.

if you listen to the production on the TD stuff, it's really amazing, deep
and very layered.

Yep, I think it was called Headspace. It was a very popular site back
then. They were actually ahead of their time trying to come up with a
streaming format for the internet and sound files in general. The site was
almost like Flash before the advent of Flash coding.

Strange, didn't realize that his dad was *that* Dolby. Not sure if
that's
 the case.

If so, why did Dolby Labs conduct a long-running litigation on him for
the
use of his real surname, 'Dolby'? Virtually finished his career.

 Know what he does now?

Makes stings/jingles for consumer/business electronic appliances (like
 mobile 'phones).

well from that link his real name aint Dolby...

also i see he nicked the name of his company from Tom Churchill's label

what´s the problem with negativity ?

when things are neative, they are

trying to avoid it - don´t make them better

this is about culture - negativity is a part of it -

so it´s good to keep a focus on things like this one too

don´t get me wrong - I don´t need to enter the subject again now

but just don´t be so afraid of bad vibes

stay focused on the reasons of negativity
