Re: [A-1-Computer_Tech] Email program suggestion? - just about ready to scream

2013-06-10 Thread Ray F
My email is all messed up now. Gmail is for more personal stuff this one is
for everything else. But...ATT webmail, which is handled by Yahoo just went
nuts. Everything goes to trash file not inbox. Pain to get to using my
non-smart phone at a light. Happens on phone or pc with the webmail. Even
with my client I check webmail because spam goes there. And sometimes it's
not really SPAM.
Also use to be if I got mail on one pc it would still usually show up on my
other too, now it does not. So I have mail scattered. I put Tbird on my mini
because mail and express are gone with Win7. It's better than using
webmail(except for checking for SPAM)but sometimes mail shows up late
sometimes the next day.
I think I can use Tbird to read Gmail but not the other way?

I vote gmail too. Loved Eudora and especially Calypso but gmail just makes
more sense now and I like the integrated calendar. Many useful features
and some useless (to me) ones, too.

Yep, I remember your probs with Tbird, and how you've tried everything
but voodoo to fix them. What about what Holly said, just going with
Gmail and skipping the desktop client all together? Gmail can def handle
huge volumes of mail. It doesn't have all the features of a desktop
client, but you can still set up filters, etc.
I'm still almost certain that your probs with not having Tbird sync with
Gmail is caused by a slow dialup connection. So if you go strictly with
the cloud you'll eliminate the need to sync at all.
Have you looked at Yahoo! email? I use their basic version and it is ok
 - but for your volume of mail and feature needs you'd want to go with
their paid version. Offers 200 filters, forwarding, POP too (if you
want it), no ads, an offline mode, etc. And it's only $19.99 for a
year. http://mailplus.mail.yahoo.com/ They also have a pretty nice
Android smartphone, tablet app. Not sure about iPhone.

Theresa, I don't comment much(more read to learn something I might have
missed), but this caught eye. Having one's e-mail on-line, or off-line,
is a 50/50. Yes, I understand the suggestion that Gmail may solve your
problem. Then again, while solving one problem, it could create a host
of new problems. On-line, you don't get to make the decision about
e-mail security. If someone wants' to see my e-mail so badly, I would
rather, they try to hack my network at home, than a website. My Yahoo
e-mail address, I only keep as a secondary account, but I rarely check
it. My ex actually had to get a new Yahoo ID about two years ago, when
I noticed her e-mail was hacked(we were members of the same discussion
forum).

I understand what is being said about the filters. Sometimes the
filters will save multiple copies of one e-mail, one particular but
different detail in each filter. For instance, if someone had one
folder for 'Depression', and one folder for 'Weather', if the word
'depression' is somehow key to each filter, the e-mail will be copied to
both folders.

As for Gmail and Tbird syncing, I agree with Donk about the dial-up
connection being the cause. Not just the speed. But also, with a
dial-up connection, you have to 'trick' the ISP servers into technically
thinking you are still online doing something, so the connection doesn't
get cut from inactivity. With Tbird, you can set it up to do periodic
mail download checks, in order to sustain the connection. When I had a
dial-up connection, I also added the virus scanner updates to the mix,
all to fool the servers into thinking I was online all that time.

Teresa, why do you need anything more than Gmail? I have other accounts,
one from my domain, the one from my provider, etc. but I use Gmail for
everything. I have three separate accounts for various uses and then
filter the messages into folders. It works very well for me. One good
feature is that they sort spam away from your mailbox so you can either
delete them periodically or have them automatically go away after a certain
period of time.
