Re: [AI] query: provision of having separate evaluation system/examiner for student with VI

2013-05-29 Thread Mohib Anwar Rafel
So far as my wisdom bethinks, there is no such rule/guideline of any
university/UGC which provides any kind of relaxation or special
treatment in respect of visually challanged candidates while
evaluating their answer sheets. I have never came across of such
mandate upon the evaluator or the university officials, even they
don't indicate that this answerbook belongs to a visually challanged
candidate! Perhaps they don't do so because making any sign or
representation which could help in identifying you amongst others
students is not permitted. However at school level or in internal
examinations if the teacher knows you personally, he can make such
relaxations on the basis of equity.

Hi all,

Rightly said by Vibhu. The CBSE did a commendable job, though I had
challenges during the examination. My question papers could not be
scanned because of subjects like Physics, Chemistry and mathematics,
and I had to type out the question papers. There were also some
glitches during the Mathematics examination. nevertheless, excellent
work by the Board!

I'm happy to share that I have secured an aggregate of 96%, emerging
as the All India topper in the special category. This includes a 99%
in Computer Science with a 99.9% percentile. Nothing wouldn't have
been possible without the continued support and guidance received from
my school administration, parents and teachers. Also, thanks to
Prashant sir, without whose guidance nothing wouldn't have been
possible. Finally, thank you all! Conversations on the list have been
so inspiring and informative, and have always motivated me to go
ahead, no matter what.

 Dear All

 Greetings!

In March this year, I appeared for CBSE Class XII exams. The results
were declared yesterday. I have been a student of Delhi Public School,
 Rohini.

I am glad to share with you all, that with the grace of god, and
never-ending support of my parents and teachers, along with the school
principal, Ms. Rita Sen, I got an aggregate of 90%. While my subjects
were English, Psychology, Sociology, Political Science, and Multimedia
and Web Technology, I stand a subject topper in Multimedia and Web
Technology with a percentile of 93%.

In fact, I was the first visually challenged student to have written
my Class XII Board exams on the computer with the help of JAWS along
with my Question Paper provided to me on computer itself in accessible
 format such as Microsoft Word.

As if now, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), allowed
the visually challenged students to write their answers on the
computer, but the Question Paper was read out to them by someone else.
Once, I started using computer with the help of Screen Reading
technology, I always felt more independent, and I felt that if someone
else read out my Question Paper to me, it restricted my freedom to
move through my Question Paper independently. So, I put this forth to
my school principal, who diligently helped me to pursue it with the
 board.

So, the computer that was provided to me, was loaded with JAWS. A CBSE
personnel was present at the center as well. The Question Paper was
scanned, edited and then given to me after which, I was given the time
to answer my paper. In fact, it is noteworthy, that all the time, that
went into scanning and editing, was not deducted out of the student’s
time to answer the paper. The students, who gave their exams under
this provision were given 15 minutes to read the Question Paper, three
hours to answer it, under the board examination scheme, and an
additional hour given to persons with disability.

While it is a dream come true for all of us, it is my pleasure, as
well as a responsibility to share with you that my school Principal,
had helped me pursue it with the board. Naturally, it wasn’t an easy
task, but for more than a year, my school Principal, Special Educator,
and my parents along with me, had been pursuing this with the board
and finally we have been successful.

In fact, I had to go to the CBSE office several times, to give them a
demo of how I used computer, to explain them why I wanted it, and how
it made persons who are visually challenged independent. Of course,
 there were
disappointments, worries, but we never gave up, and finally, just 2
days before the Board Exams, the CBSE took a giant step in the
empowerment of the visually challenged individuals by allowing all
visually challenged students to use computer with JAWS, a major policy
change! Giving the visually challenged students their right to answer
 their papers independently!

Hey friend, it is quite difficult to get braille books in open braille
because braille books require too much space on each paper that is why
we and maximum institutes use contracted braille. So I think it is not
possible. But if you want some help about contractions, you could call
to me on my personal mobile number-09780238512. If you are from other
country you must add ISD CODE for India-91. Thank you PUNEET SONI

that I need special consideration for doing my boards i.e. doing
online exam using the computer and a reader for reading the questions.
But this is exceptional for my English exam in which I am suppose to
read the English paper 1 and paper 2 in braille- and do my boards in
the month of October. I can either do this by open or even contracted
braille but I don't know the contracted one. Therefore I would like to
improvise on the grade 1 braille (uncontracted).
So, can I get books in braille from any institutions for free or even

Re: [AI] query: provision of having separate evaluation system/examiner for student with VI

2013-05-29 Thread Annavaram Neredimalli
If my memory serves me right, UGC has, perhaps, been boasting of following
such a preferential model. The problem is that Rules of this kind are never
publicly pronounced, for they are meant only for internal circulation to the
evaluators concerned. Some years ago, the UGC Chairman has revealed in a
conference during a question-answer session that UGC indeed ensures that the
scripts of the visually-challenged candidates are evaluated without paying
too much attention to minor spelling errors and grammatical mistakes. Now
that UGC has given up the descriptive questions, I am not sure if UGC even
remembers it!
Andhra Pradesh Board of Secondary school Certificate has a peculiar system
of giving 10 grace marks in each subject, and 15 in the case of Maths, at
the time of 10th standard public examination. But this can be a
post-evaluation effect as well.

So far as my wisdom bethinks, there is no such rule/guideline of any
university/UGC which provides any kind of relaxation or special treatment in
respect of visually challanged candidates while evaluating their answer
sheets. I have never came across of such mandate upon the evaluator or the
university officials, even they don't indicate that this answerbook belongs
to a visually challanged candidate! Perhaps they don't do so because making
any sign or representation which could help in identifying you amongst
others students is not permitted. However at school level or in internal
examinations if the teacher knows you personally, he can make such
relaxations on the basis of equity.

Visit the Directorate of Income Tax (DIT) website at
https://incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in/ for filing income tax returns
free of cost. Navigate to the button that reads Learn How To e-File
and activate it to read instructions on how to file IT returns.

I filed my returns last year through this portal and it was easily
done. Note that the the ITR form once generated needs to be
downloaded, printed and sent to the specified Bangaluru address via
post (no courier/speed post). The acknowledgement is sent on email
after they receive the printed form.

Re: [AI] Query regarding right-centering text.

2013-05-29 Thread Kakarla Nageswaraiah
Hello,

It's necessary and possible to right-centre text. For example, there
are three lines at the end of a leave letter like

Yours faithfully,
(K. NAGESWARAIAH)
Typist.

In the above three lines, the last line is smaller than the first two
lines. So all the three lines should come on the right but at the
same time, the last line should be centred to the first two lines.
This is what I mean right-centering text. I'm looking for a simple
shortcut to do the same.

Regards.

On 5/21/13, Shona Man shonam...@gmail.com wrote:
I think if the text is at right then how can it be at center? It mean

selecting the lines, if I use ctrl + r and ctrl + e, JAWS is not saying
 'Right-Centered' when I press Insert + f to confirm.

[AI] Four-year course: SC asks DU to consider blind students’ plea

2013-05-29 Thread Sanchit Katiyar
New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday refused to interfere with
the four-year undergraduate programme introduced by the Delhi
University but asked it to be sensitive towards the problems faced by
visually challenged students who claimed that they would be put at a
disadvantage.

A bench of justices B S Chauhan and Dipak Misra said that it cannot
direct the University on how to run the course but asked it to look
into the problems faced by the blind students.

“We should not run the country or the University sitting in the court
room. We cannot issue mandamus to do this,” the bench said while
refusing to interfere in the new course.

“We share your agony and the problem faced by you must be looked into
by the committee,” the bench said.

It was referring to the committee appointed by the Delhi Universty to
look into grievances related to the course, which is being introduced
from this academic session.

“Whatever your grievances are, you file representation to the
committee and we would ask the committee to look into it within a
week,” it said.

The court was hearing a plea filed by an NGO Sambhavana alleging that
visually challenged student would not be able to meet the requirements
of the foundation course in the first year of the programme as it
contained a bouquet of 11 courses which included mandatory Building
Mathematical Ability and Science and Life.

The bench, however, made it clear that visually challenged students
should not suffer because of introduction of new syllabus and asked
the University to give all facilities to them to compete with other
students.

“They must be treated as a special category. Sensitivity must flow. We
don’t want these people to suffer,” the bench said.

The bench said that it would pass a formal order on the petition.

Sambhavana, a registered society working for the welfare of
differently abled students, said, “If the four-year undergraduate
programme with multiple degrees is introduced in its present form, the
student with vision impairment will suffer irreparable loss as they
shall not be able to participate in mainstream education system.”

 Hello,

It's necessary and possible to right-centre text. For example, there
are three lines at the end of a leave letter like

In the above three lines, the last line is smaller than the first two
lines. So all the three lines should come on the right but at the

This is what I mean right-centering text. I'm looking for a simple

Re: [AI] Empowerment by CBSE for Visually Challenged - Effort Done!

2013-05-29 Thread vibhu sharma
Dear All

In continuation to my earlier mail, regarding my class XII examines
and results, I must share with you that, in class XI, when I had to
choose the five subjects that I wanted to study, I chose Multimedia
and Web Technology. I faced a lot of reluctance from lot of people,
because it was felt, that I would not be able to handle this subject
due to the usage of software like Photoshop and Flash, and questions
of screenshots.

At that time, Mr. Dipendra Manocha and Mr. Prashant Verma, most
determinably supported me, the two worthy members of accessindia.

In fact, Mr. Dipendra Manocha constantly wrote convincing letters to
explain how I could handle the subject, and Mr. Prashant Verma
himself, went with me to the CBSE office to convince them to give me
alternate questions in lieu of the questions that required a visual
input, or to explain the screenshots in words, so that I could write
the HTML, vbscript or ASP codes. I took home tuitions for this
subject, and Mr. Verma met and guided him.

Today, after two years of their constant support and help provided to
me particularly in handeling this subject, I have emerged as a subject
topper in this subject with 93%.

I attribute my achievement to them, and want to thank them for their
continuous support and guidance.

A big thank Sirs

Thanks and regards
Vibhu Sharma

On 5/28/13, vibhu sharma vibhusharm...@gmail.com wrote:
 Dear All

I hereby acknowledge and thank my school principal, Mr. Vaneet Joshi,
the chairman CBSE, Mr. M. C. Sharma the Controller of Examination,
CBSE, and the members of the committee that was formed to resolve
 this.

 Thanks and regards
 Vibhu Sharma

Re: [AI] Empowerment by CBSE for Visually Challenged - Effort Done!

2013-05-29 Thread Prashant Ranjan Verma
Well done Vibhu, your achievements are a showpiece for us.
With determination and adequate support and reasonable accommodation nothing
is impossible.
And before my mail is labelled as only a congratulatory mail, let me add
some information.
Visually impaired students should take up computer science related subjects
in school if they have interest. However, it is important that they are well
supported and guided by the school, an NGO or an expert.
At times it is necessary to work out alternative methods for accomplishing
the tasks given in the syllabus. The software tools used in the school may
not be accessible but the same results can be achieved with alternate tools
that are accessible.

As per my information CBSE purchased screen reading software and established
a special examination centre for Vibhu and Kartik. They had earlier
discussed with me the possibility of holding the examination in the
well-equipped computer labs of an NGO. I think it would have been a good
option. Nevertheless our young starts faced the challenges with courage and
have come out shining.

The students of NAB Delhi who are also studying through integrated system
have also scored very well. Avichal is the top scorer among them with 92%.
The bar is being raised by our youngsters every year.

Now there is competition among the visually impaired for the best seats in
colleges.smile

Congrats once again to Vibhu and other students for their brilliant results.

Dear All

In continuation to my earlier mail, regarding my class XII examines and
results, I must share with you that, in class XI, when I had to choose the
five subjects that I wanted to study, I chose Multimedia and Web Technology.
I faced a lot of reluctance from lot of people, because it was felt, that I
would not be able to handle this subject due to the usage of software like
Photoshop and Flash, and questions of screenshots.

At that time, Mr. Dipendra Manocha and Mr. Prashant Verma, most determinably
supported me, the two worthy members of accessindia.

In fact, Mr. Dipendra Manocha constantly wrote convincing letters to explain
how I could handle the subject, and Mr. Prashant Verma himself, went with me
to the CBSE office to convince them to give me alternate questions in lieu
of the questions that required a visual input, or to explain the screenshots
in words, so that I could write the HTML, vbscript or ASP codes. I took home
tuitions for this subject, and Mr. Verma met and guided him.

Today, after two years of their constant support and help provided to me
particularly in handeling this subject, I have emerged as a subject topper
in this subject with 93%.

I attribute my achievement to them, and want to thank them for their
continuous support and guidance.

A big thank Sirs

Thanks and regards
Vibhu Sharma

 Dear All

In fact, it is noteworthy, that all the time, that
went into scanning and editing, was not deducted out of the student's
time to answer the paper. The students, who gave their exams under
this provision were given 15 minutes to read the
