Re: [AI] women with Disabilities -12th 5 year Plan
This is very very serious point that even in Delhi, there is no hostel for those girls who are going to the colleges and there is no government school for girls. - Original Message - From: Murali Padmanabhan mur...@cbmsaron.org To: accessindia@accessindia.org.in Sent: Thursday, July 21, 2011 9:36 AM Subject: Re: [AI] women with Disabilities -12th 5 year Plan Dear Kanchan, Greetings from CBM SARO(N)! First of all, many congrats for becoming a member of the group. My suggestion would be to mainstream the issues of women with disabilities into the existing women empowerment programmes/schemes implemented through the Central/State Governments. Self Help Groups related schemes should take pro active steps in including women with disabilities in their participation and contribution to livelihood/income generation initiatives. National Commission for Women should be strengthened through the planning support to mainstream the issues of WWDs. Provision to represent the group etc. National rural livelihood mission, NRHM, MGNREGS, Other rural development initiatives should have affirmative actions including special provision incorporated. CSWB/SSWB should be making all their initiative including the hostel for working women inclusive and accessible. These are my immediate thoughts. It will come into effect only on 1st April 2012.It will be effective for 5 years upto 2017. I have to give some recommendations on the important topic of Women with Disabilities. Just joined the sub group a few days ago. 1. What expenditure do you want the government to make/do which will benefit women with disabilities? 2. What new Scheme should be introduced? 3. Which existing Scheme can be strengthened? Any thoughts on helping specifically women with disabilities. You all have varied experiences this is the time to put on your thinking caps and come out with something innovative and something that will make a difference. I would love to hear the women on this group who are generally silent. The fundamental thought on advocacy is Nothing for us without us. This of course does not stop the men from suggesting. Too bad the time is short. Need whatever you can think of by Friday evening. Have to submit the Report on Sunday. Callers were predominantly visually challenged and talked primarily about various issues faced, rather than actual draft of new law. Even minister was not aware about provisions suggested in new law about issues raised and kept on assuring about best intentions of the government. Now, minister has charted the course ahead as presentation of draft before central coordination committee under existing PWD act, consultations with various state governments, and vetting by various ministries, which gives confidence to me about my proposed half a decade from establishing of committee, maybe, plus or minus a couple of years!! Issues raised included: Non implementation of existing provisions, preference to low vision and candidates having residual sight in jobs rather than blind candidates, Muddled-up status of handicapped coach in railways, prohibition on blind candidates for teachers' posts in Gujarat, Scribe problem particularly sixty percentage requirement, Demand for single certificate to prove disability being valid for all schemes/facilities, etc. To a question about denial of banking facilities like loans by banks, minister referred aspirant to National handicapped finance board. dear sir this is great to hear and also a great achievement. - Original Message - From: Shadab Husain shadab...@gmail.com To: accessindia@accessindia.org.in Sent: Thursday, June 23, 2011 12:05 PM Subject: [AI] Now, a pen that can read Koran Now, a pen that can read Koran J. S. Ifthekhar The Hindu AN INNOVATION: The Koran reading pen on display at a book store in Hyderabad. Photo: Nagara Gopal Can read any verse of the holy book loud and clear Come Ramzan and Koran is the fastest moving product. But this time round, it is going to sell in a different format. The Koran reading pen has hit the market here and more than a month before Ramzan is to begin, it is making waves here. What is so special about it? Well, the pen can read any verse of the Koran loud and clear. All one has to do is to touch it on any page or verse and listen to the Arabic version. One can also choose the voice of famous reciters such as Abdul Rahman Al Sudais, Abdul Baset Abdu Essmad, Ali Al Hudhaifi, Sa'd Al-Ghamidi. This is not all. Translation of the Koran is also available just at the push of a button. You can go for English, German, Urdu, Persian and French versions. In good demand This Chinese product is in good demand at the chains of Himalaya Book store in the city. It comes with a copy of Koran printed in rich Uthmani font, a functional manual, ear phones, charger and a Tajweed Book - all at Rs. 3,750. For people who do not know the Arabic script, the pen is of great help. They can learn to read Koran in the right diction. Others can also improve their recitation, says Abdul Momin, manager at the Himalaya Book store. The Tajweed Book is an added attraction. With the help of the pen, one can learn to pronounce the Arabic alphabets with the right intonation. The pen has a four GB memory with TF card option to extend it. There is also the recording option and a built-in speaker with USB port. Interestingly, the pen can read only the accompanying Koran and Tajweed Book since it connects with the special ink used in the print. For the devout, there is something new to look forward to this Ramzan. http://www.thehindu.com/life-and-style/religion/article2126787.ece?homepage= truecss=print Search for old postings at: http://www.mail-archive.com/accessindia@accessindia.org.in/ To unsubscribe send a message to accessindia-requ...@accessindia.org.in with the subject unsubscribe. HYDERABAD: Do you know that chess is the only indoor game available for the visually impaired in the world? Now, thanks to a a research officer of the National Institute for the Visually Handicapped (NIVH), they can play carroms too. Their board, however, will have 21 holes instead of the standard four. This carrom board is especially made for persons who are visually impaired. It is the brainchild of Dr Milan Dass, a Research Officer of NIVH, who did it for the students of the Devnar Foundation For The Blind (DFFTB). “In this world a visually impaired person has access only to two games - Chess and Cricket. So, considering the limitations I have designed a new carrom board,” Dass said. The game will be played with a C-stopper, which will be fixed behind one of the 21 holes. Using a striker which is modified into a cresent shape, the player can put any coin into the hole. “The opponent will dictate into which hole the coin has to be deposited. So the player who finishes all the nine coins first will be considered a winner,” Dass explained. It took him four days to prepare the modified carrom board and students of DFFTB are enjoying it immensely. --- regards, prateek agarwal. director, daedal technovations pvt. ltd. www.daedaltechnovations.com We bring the change we wish to see! website: www.prateekagarwal.webs.com | www.prateekagarwal.tk Search for old postings at: http://www.mail-archive.com/accessindia@accessindia.org.in/ To unsubscribe send a message to accessindia-requ...@accessindia.org.in with the subject unsubscribe. Your suggestions are the prestigious gift for me. Now, I want to clarify my second statement. I have seen, that many visually challenged persons has to face difficulties in detecting bus numbers during traveling. so, I think that it is essential to have a software, through which we can overcome this problem. I think that after putting a software in walking cane, there should be a scope for visually challenged person to instruct that cane for detecting only that bus number, in which, the person wants to travel. Instruction of the visually impared person should be in written form. It means, before travelling, the person has to write destination like Saray kale khan to badarpur, and then he should write the bus number like 163 on the cane and the cane will only detect the specific destination and detect the specific bus number which has been written by the person. I hope, you all have got my point. But if you feel difficulty in my statement, you can tell me without any hesitation. Though it was downloaded for Nokia C5, pasting it in couple of other Nokia phones with Ovi maps 3.03 and 3.04 also worked. Having the map data offline in the phone not only saves GPRS costs but also Ovi maps software responds faster during navigation etc. As Map downloader is completely inaccessible to jaws and I had to use my little residual vision to do it, so thought to share the data with the group Make sure your phone has Ovi Maps version 3.03 or 3.04. I haven't checked putting this data for map versions lower and higher than this. Its a 143 MB zip file, which after inflating would take around 172 MB space in your phone memory card. File name: 35415 India maps.zip Description: Map data for Ovi maps software version 3.03 3.04 Download link: http://www.sendspace.com/file/gpyhga After downloading it in your PC, unzip it. It has 16 folders. Connect your phone to PC through USB in mass storage mode. Go to your memory card, and locate a folder called CITIES. Inside cities, go in the folder called 'diskcache'. Here you would find same 16 folders apart from others. But their total size would be much less than 172 MB. As a fallback to your original you might like to move these 16 folders at another location in your computer, before copying the downloaded ones in to your phone. Once you have copied this data, unplug your phone from the computer, open Ovi maps and search for cities/states you haven't searched or seen in it before. If it is working fine, which I believe it should, it should show those maps instantly without the need to download map data of those places using GPRS. thanks, Pranay. Re: [AI] PWD ACT
Is there anything regarding reservation in. Thanks. Original Message - From: purnima jain purnima25j...@gmail.com To: accessindia@accessindia.org.in Sent: Wednesday, April 13, 2011 2:42 PM Subject: [AI] PWD ACT . hi friends, I happen to read the new PWD ACT for the first time, I think that the chapter on employment particularly in relation to reservation needs to be more stronger .There should be some provisions to ensure that the establishments do comply with the provisions for instance the disability court must have the power to stay the appointment where the scheme of reservation have not been followed .IT should also have the power to stay any further appointment in case there is a huge backlog. There should be an equal opportunity commission to monitor reservation for every recruitment exam in the government. There should be a procedure to complain to this commission if the scheme of reservation has been not complied with and the commission should proceed to prevent any noncompliance .The establishments could also be asked to get prior approval from the commission before conducting any recruitment exam. There should be strong provision for transparency and the candidates must have the right to ask for the cutoff marks, their own marks, and the reasons for nonslection in case there is prima facie noncompliance with the scheme of reservation There could be some sort of penalty for noncompliance. The article 16 of the constitution also needs to be amended to include the ground of disability the definition of establishment must include within it the legislature and the judiciary so that there is reservation for the PWD in the legislature and the judiciary. There must be some provision relating to a National commission for the PWD like in the case of ST,SC. Further it is my concern that these courts must not be another stage in the heirchy of the courts thus in some cases their decision must be final and appeals must be allowed on strong grounds .We need to make the courts really powerful and effective if at all the ACT is to do any good to us .Help me to take issues to the concerned persons. This is based on my personal experience and wish that none of us face the things I did .thanks. To unsubscribe send a message to accessindia-requ...@accessindia.org.in with the subject unsubscribe. Although I was not amongst the 500 brave visually challnged persons who reached Jantar Mantar under one common flag to lend their undaunted support to Anna the Great, yet I salute them for standing up for the cause of the whole nation, and especially that of the V I persons, who have to undergo double ammount of suffering--firstly for their own limitations and secondly because of the callous attitude of the corrupt Government politicians and officials. That is why we have to struggle so hard to get our right to appointment to the vacancies reserved for us, as well as for other issues regarding accessibility and resergvation. The corrupt politicians tried their level best to weaken the movement. In their vicious efforts they are mysteriously trying even to hamper the mails regarding this great movement. This is a new disguise of corruption at the level of internet. So, friends, let us try to think of ways and means to thart it. Warm regards. Pradeep. So after you install talks the default talks key, the T9 key and the menu button will use the same key, which really makes me miss my dear old dedicated T9 key in N70, using which I would quickly select messages in non-contiguous order, select text to do cut copy paste (Yes I'm really good at that ), add / edit words... Sure, you can certainly re-assign the talks key to a different one, but I can't think of any other key that would well suit for this purpose. Then why the heck did I go for this phone? There are 2 reasons - Firstly, this is very much KNFB reader compatible which I'm planning to buy as soon as I get my next big bonus (it better be). Secondly, I honestly think I made a killing deal by acquiring this one at such a low price. While it's Certainly not at which you fill the fuel in the fuel station. Re: [AI] AccessibleNews Daisy V3.0 launched
how can i install the daisy please tell me the steps. thanks, - Original Message - From: Prashant Naik pran...@gmail.com To: accessindia@accessindia.org.in Sent: Tuesday, February 01, 2011 7:06 AM Subject: Re: [AI] AccessibleNews Daisy V3.0 launched Hello, I tried this program. It is really a good service where lot of automation is happening in the background and we get a very accessible output format for reading newspapers. AccessibleNews Daisy is similar to Accessible WebbIE RSS news reader. WebbIE is a free web browser for blind and visually-impaired people. Once you install it you get many accessible programs. One of the sub-program of WebbIE is RSS News Reader. In Accessiblenews we get daisy format book in our hard disk folder. In case of WebbIE there is a separate application window to add and read RSS. One good point is on the website of AccessibleNews they already have many RSS feeds. You just need to check the check box. I subscribed to 4 such feeds like Times of India headlines, Google, Freedom Scientific, etc. One suggestion for AccessibleNews is it creates a single daisy book for all selected RSS. For few RSS it is okay but for more number of subscribed RSS feeds, book becomes heavy and takes time to load. Also navigation becomes slow. So I think multiple daisy books creation can be done by AccessibleNews if RSS feeds are beyond 5-6. Allow at the PC start up synchronization of RSS feeds if PC is connected to internet with a message “Would you like to sync….” So friends try it and give your valuable feedbacks to developers. Really it is an urgent issue to solve with regard to higher education of persons with visual impairment. Are there any scripts and tutorials for using SPSS 16th version or loyer with Jaws 11? With best wishes for your efforts, Janardhana Naidu. On 1/31/11, Prashant Naik pran...@gmail.com wrote: Dear friends, I am sharing my few findings on SPSS stats program. I did this accessibility testing at XRCVC to explore this program. Many of our students are pursing higher education and they need to use this stats program. If you can recollect, few days back I asked AI list question with regard to stats programs SPSS, SAS and Minitab accessibility. Please give me your comments / feedback. Also correct my findings if you already have good experience of SPSS with JAWS. - Prashant Naik Accessibility testing of SPSS version 16.0. At XRCVC I tried basic operational testing of SPSS (an internationally well known program, designed to deal with data management and statistical analysis) with JAWS screen reader version12.0.522. Following are my findings: To make SPSS accessible and work with JAWS. • SPSS 16 is JAVA based application so to make it accessible you need to install Java Access Bridge. You can read JAWS help to know more about installing Java and Java Access Bridge. Then configure your Java Access Bridge as given below • Need to do copy paste of files. • Go to the following folder and copy all files C:\Program Files\Java Access Bridge\installerFiles • Now you need to locate the Lib folder within SPSS (or any other application) to paste all those files you copied in the previous step. C:\Program Files\Application Name\lib • In the following URL, they also tell you to modify Environment Variables to indicate the location of the application, https://docs.rice.edu/confluence/display/ITTUT/Screen+reading+software+(JAWS)+for+SPSS+set+up+instructions • It seems that original product CD of SPSS comes with Accessibility folder from where you can copy accessibility.properties file to SPSS lib folder. • Follow the steps outlined in SPSS help of how to use it with screen readers. • Contact SPSS support through their website for further help. • Also for older version of SPSS there are JAWS scripts available which one can find from online lists and can download from freedom scientific visit the link http://www.freedomscientific.com/fs_support/BulletinView.asp?QC=426 Problems • You can access all the menus and read dialogue boxes. • The menus are read properly by JAWS • We can say that many features of SPSS can be accessed through JAWS, features such as the data entry grid, the menus, and large parts of the dialogue boxes. • However, you cannot read the SPSS output window. In the output window you can review tables. • The solution is to export it into any format of choice. The available • Options are rtf, txt, pdf, excel and so on where the column and row headings are announced for each single cell, making scanning of tables easier than in the SPSS format. • Graphs, 3Ds are not JAWS readable. Conclusion There are few issues with regard to accessibility of SPSS but I found that a basic data analysis operation is possible for a blind user. Of course he / she needs a good training on SPSS and should be able to do workaround with JAWS to get the work done. Also I would like to state that I have tried it on a very basic level stats operations but if we need to explore SPSS with many of its functionalities / options and then test its accessibility, we need an expert user of SPSS to work. Re: [AI] independence and mobility
I support your oopinion. We should be more brave and develop the skill to fase these kind of challenges. - Original Message - From: Jean Parker radiofore...@gmail.com To: accessindia@accessindia.org.in Sent: Monday, September 27, 2010 12:54 AM Subject: [AI] independence and mobility All: Being independent in one's mobility does not mean never utilizing the assistance of others. Actually, it means quite the opposite. To be independently mobile, one uses one's mobility skills which might include, cane, listening, asking for and using information about one's location, having back-up plans in case the first plan doesn't work, employing strategies to get where you want to go and, at times, requesting and receiving assistance from others. The thing that makes you independent is that you make the decisions about where you will go, when you will go, who else will go, what you will do when you get there, and how you will get there. It doesn't mean, nor has it ever meant, never asking for assistance from others. It does mean gauging one's environment based on what you know about it and employing the mobility skills and available assistance that best fits the situation. But the key is that YOU decide, no one else decides for you. It might interest you to know that while blind people in the United States often pride themselves on using good cane technique and navigating to unknown locations by themselves, this does not mean not asking for and receiving assistance. The environment there is much different than it is here. You should also know, that many blind people in the United States find themselves in the difficult situation of attending large events and having no assistance available to them at times when they really need it. This is both a practical issue and a cultural one. It asks the question of how each person defines independence and how do they implement their beliefs in everyday life. It also raises the question of how we judge each other's mobility skills and/or preferences. This is an ongoing debate among blind people which will probably not be completed in any of our lifetimes. We can not always apply the mobility strategies used in the west here in India or in most other developing countries. But we can adapt much of the philosophy that has emerged in the west and adjust the techniques to meet our individual needs. Finally, having traveled widely in many parts of the world, the strategies I use to get where I want to go are always flexible as to the environment, language, time of day, culture and a million other factors that are beyond the scope of this list. The strategies I use in India are often different than the one's I use in America or Europe but the end result is that I still get where I want to go and I am in control of the process.
