What drives that rate up? big crews? big wage? depth of bore? a lot of

How are you doing the construction?
Good plowing you can do 1-2 miles a day.
Good drilling you can do 500’ a day or more.
Good microtrenching you can do 2000’ a day.
A good rate for plowing if I was paying would be $2.50/ foot or less.
Drilling $13/foot or less.
Microtrenching $10/foot or

That is the minimum I will take to do the drilling. That is drilled hole with
conduit pulled back. I can do as much drilling for that rate as I want but
much of it is in a city with lotsa gas and waterlines to cross. I will take it
all day long in the country.

Don't forget the dreaded $100/foot rock rate.

I've paid anywhere from $8.50 - $14. I'm looking to bring it in-house for our
next larger project because of how high that is.

Rock/cobble will run it way up. Depth is not a huge issue. Having to pothole
100 times in a 500’ bore job is a huge pain.
No rocks in Illinois, right?
You can do this with a crew of 2 but best if you have 2 guys for potholing out
ahead of the drill, then at least two, one to run the drill
If the contactor provides the material the customer will always pay more for
the overall job.

Yes QGIS is a great program and since it is open source the amount of
information you find is great on the internet and YouTube. The power is in the
plug ins though. You will spend a lot of time going through all of them to get

I second Brian's recommendations on QGIS and Manifold. If you want really
powerful GIS functions, Manifold is the best system, hands down. I would
never use Arc or MapInfo again after using manifold and I used to be a

I use qgis (open source). A bit of a learning curve but it's amazingly
functional.
There is also manifold which is dirt cheap as far as GIS is concerned.
