[AFMUG] phone lines for Ethernet transmission

2015-12-27 Thread Chris Herrington
Did this some years ago, and now I need to do it again—use existing phone
cabling for Ethernet cabling.

100Mbps OK for this application.

I have seen a couple of solutions but they seem terribly expensive, at lease a
lot more expensive than I remember.

Thanks for any help finding these.

Re: [AFMUG] OT: DJI Phantom 3 Pro, wireless protocol?

2015-12-27 Thread Bill Prince
They call it "auto-home". When you start it up, you calibrate the
compass, and it records the starting point. Then you're supposed to just
push the "Home" button, and it is supposed to fly back to that position
and hover.

When it started flying off into the distance, he pushed the home button,
and it cam back, but it was off by 20 feet or so, and it tried to land
in a tree. Not optimal. he was able to push the "up" control to prevent
it from actually landing in the tree. However, he was not able to
maneuver it to the appropriate landing spot.

As I and his other uncle were diving to avoid being hit by the thing, he
was able to land it on the roof of his house without damaging it.

Our problems with them peaked about 5 years ago, either a
drought
year
killed off the aphids that the ladybugs feed on, or the latest
pesticides on
the crops, in any case I don't see that many ladybugs anymore.

In fall they look for a place to hibernate for the winter
(like
inside walls
and attics). They prefer white sunny surfaces. So put your
equipment box
on the north side, don't paint it white, and seal up all the
cracks where
they can get in. Maybe put some screen or pantyhose over
any vent
openings.
Are these NEMA 4 boxes, or just rainproof?

I assume you have the orange Asian variety that bite and
stink if
you scare
them. If Trump is elected, I expect he will deport them
and then
build a
wall to keep them out. If you have the native red
ladybugs, they
are good
bugs and you should welcome them and take it as a good
omen. Even the
orange ones don't eat your stuff or lay eggs, but they squirt
smelly liquid
if scared. Most people advise vacuuming them and throwing
out the
bag.
What I hate are the earwigs which leave earwig poop
everywhere. We
also
have trouble with the box elder beetles.

Any pesticide would have to be applied where they would
die before
getting
into your box. Killing them inside the box probably doesn't
accomplish
anything.

Possibly. Although the one he's got has a 4K camera. That's gotta use

Saw a thing on the interwebs yesterday about how to not crash your drone the
first time you use it.
Apparently they have something similar to an E Stop button that turns on the
autopilot and flies them back to the starting poitn.

The intent was to hover it a low level over his back yard. All the
high-voltage lines, phone lines, and cable lines were street-side, so
the air was clear over his back yard. Should have been easy.

However, when I started up my sniffer, I was getting at least 30 WiFi
hotspots in the area (on all the available 2.4 GHz channels).

When it started flying off into the distance, he pushed the home
button, and it cam back, but it was off by 20 feet or so, and it
tried to land in a tree. Not optimal. he was able to push the "up"
control to prevent it from actually landing in the tree. However,
he was not able to maneuver it to the appropriate landing spot.

As I and his other uncle were diving to avoid being hit by the
thing, he was able to land it on the roof of his house without
damaging it.

[AFMUG] WISP insurance

We’ve had another lightning strike, at least the second one this year.

I’ve got this feeling that our insurance company is probably going to start to
get a little difficult in the near future.

Who do you guys recommend?

I’ve read about a few that cover everything, CPE, tower equipment, towers,
labor, etc... I imagine those probably cost roughly what we bring in a year,
but...

Thanks guys.

My link from my home to my father’s is over burial phone line. Two pair,
twisted. Does 100Mb FD, or at least it did until we had a mouse chew through it.

I’ve had the correct cable on hand for a decade or more, but the damn thing
just keeps working. By the time we decide to upgrade we’ll have 802.11ac
between my house and his and there will be no need for the cable.

I suppose there are some perks to having a son that runs a WISP.

We only file if it is a complete shutdown. $500 deductible, no sense in
filing anything below complete tower electronics loss.

We've had more than 2 strikes this year, but only two that completely killed
the towers. We actually had at least 3 hits since the 23rd. Not sure how
many customers got fried, lost access to a chunk of my network. I'm building
in redundancy, already had it scheduled for January once we got another
tower up.

I once had an employee become a US citizen. We threw him a party. He started
asking me about voting and parties and what the difference was. He was from
Guatemala. This was in the mid 1980s. It ended up with me saying that I think
the Republicans were more business friendly and the Democrats were more social
program friendly and left it at that. I really did not want to proselytize a
brand new citizen. I just wanted to celebrate him surviving the escape from a
nasty group of people that wanted him dead. Hopeful he could enjoy just being
a citizen for a while before he picked sides.

The latest firmware for the AF series (all models) now calculates the

It uses the GPS data to calculate FSL and assumes clear LOS.

Is there a good link estimation utility for the Airfiber 24 HD?

I like the UBNT online link calculator, but it doesn't work with 24Ghz?

This is the link I just put up, shouldn't the chains all be about equal dB?
What does it mean when the second chain is so much different from the first on
these units?

Don't even know if the dB is dialed in at this range :(

Re: [AFMUG] WISP insurance

2015-12-27 Thread Glen Waldrop
Thanks.

Normally I have at least an entire tower’s worth of equipment on hand, but I’ve
been phasing out my old equipment and upgrading to 802.11n. Keep having to
replace something, so spare parts are a tad lean at the moment.

Parts on the UPS truck. They’ll probably be here long before the weather will
allow us to climb for any decent amount of time. Looking at replacing three
point to point feeds and my main 2GHz/5GHz MT AP, antennas and all.

My primary climber is down with a broken heel due to a slight tower falling,
(not mine), so we’re training a new climber as well. Have to allocate more time.

On the upside, it was second in line to be upgraded. Now the insurance company
will help cover at least a portion of that.

to get a little difficult in the near future.

  Who do you guys recommend?

I’ve read about a few that cover everything, CPE, tower equipment, towers,
labor, etc... I imagine those probably cost roughly what we bring in a year,
but...

  Thanks guys.

Netsys products work really well. We have used them for almost 9 years.

The only cheaper option is probably back-to-back SDSL modems from eBay of the
like, which will he slower.

100Mbps OK for this application.

I have seen a couple of solutions but they seem terribly expensive, at lease a
lot more expensive than I remember.

Thanks for any help finding these.

Re: [AFMUG] WISP insurance

2015-12-27 Thread George Skorup
I'd have to ask the boss, but I think we're with Hartford. It's a per
incident deductible. So if a storm comes through and takes out 10
towers, we pay once. Right now we only have core sites and any others
with more than $5k worth of gear on it. And yes, generally, it's only
used if we lose 50-100% (in cost) of the gear at a site. I won't
publicly say in $ how much gear we have insured, but I believe the
policy costs us under $3k/yr. When you have say $20k worth of licensed
gear at a site, a couple $k/yr just makes sense.

On 12/27/2015 10:13 PM, Glen Waldrop wrote:

Thanks.

Normally I have at least an entire tower’s worth of equipment on hand,
but I’ve been phasing out my old equipment and upgrading to 802.11n.
Keep having to replace something, so spare parts are a tad lean at the
moment.
Parts on the UPS truck. They’ll probably be here long before the
weather will allow us to climb for any decent amount of time. Looking
at replacing three point to point feeds and my main 2GHz/5GHz MT AP,
antennas and all.

My primary climber is down with a broken heel due to a slight tower
falling, (not mine), so we’re training a new climber as well. Have to
allocate more time.
On the upside, it was second in line to be upgraded. Now the insurance
company will help cover at least a portion of that.
