I’m not sure. The customer had bought something called a Weboost. We think
the antenna had a direct short in it.

Wilson and SureCall both have wide band yagi and panels with 700 to 2700mhz
spread. Tessco has a good selection of DAS antennas as well. Which amp did

We have a NN license I'd be happy to part with. It's completely useless in
our area around Dallas because of TowerStream. Hit me offlist and I'll make
a great deal.

Im lost.
We have two production authoritative DNS servers for our domains and

Im building the first of two recursive servers for our customers, and

where would I actually put these records?

vl[A]-[B][C].[D].net.domain.com

A = vlan-id

C = device index (0, 1, 2, etc)
D = location id

Example:

vl7-artr1.dan100.net.domain.com

(vlan 7 interface of "artr1" at "dan100")

For customer/dymamic pools, we just do something simple like:

ip-1.2.3.4.cust.domain.com

I know it's forward notation, but I prefer to keep them simple.
Also valuable in some cases is setting a longer TTL value for your
non-dynamic-use PTR records (like 86400 or 43200). It avoids you
having to change them later when someone with a static IP gets black
listed on a DUL email server list.

Also, right or wrong, I use loose geographical naming conventions
(based on CLLI naming convention) for PTR records for L3 interfaces
so traceroutes are more intuitive. So, one of our towers is called
SDPB and it's in Spearfish so I might use
"sprf-sdpb-ccr-eth1.celerityinternet.com". If nothing else, as the
network grows, it's helpful internally.

Chuck, I just got some new ones dropped shipped from you today. They
have the "POE" label on the RJ45 closest to the terminal block. These
have always had the POE on the one opposite the terminal block. Are
these just marked wrong?

I didn’t realize Pidgin was an IM client, and thought you were making fun of
his grammar. Which was maybe somewhat Yodaspeak but not pidgin.

We run an openfire server and have always used the spak im client for
interoffice communication between TS, CS and and administration
the problem is we never knew who was where and it required a different
username on each device, workstation, mobile, laptop, etc without configuring a
boot on the openfire server, just a pita to remember to login logout everytime
you changed locations if you wanted uniformity, and histories only logged on
the server, so if i popped on my laptop on the same account as my workstation
it wouldnt have the workstation history.

trillian solves this as you connect to the trillian server and it connects to
your inhouse im server (or yahoo aol or facebook, etc) from multiple devices at
the same time

They have a free client with their server with ads or whatever, a paid client
with some features, and an in house server with perpetual licensing and
optional renewal

It seems to meet the need, however, im my previous interweb miscreient days
it was trillian and ICQ i used to deliver sub7 packages to my unsuspecting
victims, ie, it was a toy software. It seems to have grown, but is it still a
toy software?

Slack allows multiple devices from the same account, with multiple
permissions / control levels per user/group. Also many NMS systems now
have slack support, so our outages, alarts, etc got send to a #NOC
channel

Really, try it out. It's free / easy for most things, depending on your needs.

I did like some features of openfire like it could fetch emails and send

I used trillian for a long time to communicate with friends. Hated the
way multiple platform part of it worked, but it worked.

For private IM we now mostly use WhatsApp, as it has some cost
advantages for the people in our circle that travel internationally.

For work IM, we now are using Slack. It's goofy in a couple of ways, and

doesn't work at all/

trillian solves this as you connect to the trillian server and it
connects to your inhouse im server (or yahoo aol or facebook, etc)
from multiple devices at the same time

They have a free client with their server with ads or whatever, a paid
client with some features, and an in house server with perpetual
licensing and optional renewal

It seems to meet the need, however, im my previous interweb miscreient
days it was trillian and ICQ i used to deliver sub7 packages to my
unsuspecting victims, ie, it was a toy software. It seems to have
grown, but is it still a toy software?

+2 for slack, although Ryver looks pretty good too
(http://www.ryver.com/) but I haven't used it.

Slack has a TON of integrations too. Once of the things we did was
have a #socialMedia channel, and all of our mentions from twitter,
facebook, etc ended up reposting into the channel window. This let us
stay on top of questions and complaints

They have a pretty slick API.

openfire is jabber/xmpp, just easy for a guy who doesnt give a shit about
doing any work on an IM server besides installing it from a script and
occasionally pushing an update.

A non battery drain on mobile is a big deal, and dumb user file transfer

Why not run ircd-hybrid on your own non-publicly accessible server and use
actual IRC clients? If this is for company/internal use.

or run a jabber/XMPP daemon and use any of your choice of CLI and GUI XMPP

Re: [AFMUG] Big Guns align behind CBRS LTE in 3.5 ghz

2016-08-24 Thread Rick Harnish
There are approximately 500,000 PAL licenses, (7) 10 MHz per license per census tract. No company can buy more than four licenses per census tract. There is also an additional 80 MHz of GAA spectrum, which will include 3.65-3.7.  I would guess metro areas will go fairly high but rural areas not so much. Since the census tracts are so small, small WISPs may see more value in their coverage area than the big guys.In my opinion, this is the best opportunity for WISPs to gain access to affordable licensed spectrum ever. Also, there is opportunistic use of licensed PAL spectrum, if it is not being used as governed by the SAS database. Read the rules, keep up on the upcoming auction proceedings, identify the census tracts in your area and get prepared to bid!Respectively,Rick HarnishDirector of WISP MarketsDirect: 972.922.1443Baicells Technologies N.A. I don't believe they can purchase all of the GAA, well, not one company anyway.

I think you're also over-estimating the geographic reach that they'll be
purchasing licenses in.

I'm having a hard time getting this to work. I'm working a very simple
setup:

AP: UBNT NSM2, airMax off, WDS off, bridge mode, WPA2, v5.6.3

SM: ePMP 2.4 GHz integrated, WiFi SM mode, bridge mode, WPA2, v3.0

I can't even get the ePMP to connect to a test WiFi network, so I expect
I'm missing something very basic on the ePMP. ePMP will see the network,
but will not register. Any suggestions?

I agree with Gino. WE have used them in a 1-2 mile PTP config. Mainly to link

The other thing that really impressed us was short 100ft shots to remote
buildings with trees getting -60s.

I believe its a good thing as it drives more movement towards the ecosystem.

The only one in the group with posible interest of bidding would be google,
Nokia is in because they are a infrastructure manufacturer, Qualcomm for
chipsets and ruckus for enterprise coverage

No, I think it's cool. I was just curious how you justify the associated
headaches when a guy like me goes to implement it and somehow manages to
not follow the very clear instructions and ends up bugging you. Did you
build this up purpose driven from your own need to have it and it just was
simple enough for you to make it public?

CloudFlare (by default) doesn’t cache html or php pages as they can contain
dynamic content and in my case they do. So my lists are being served out
of cache along with images, js & css and other static content but my html

custom cache rules to cover the .rsc file extension but that was easy.
CloudFlare has a nifty feature called Railgun which makes the dynamic
content work properly with the CDN which has an associated cost… I
don’t need it at this point, however, so I haven’t become a paid customer
yet.

For years I've provided a FREE blacklist service for MikroTik users. I have
recently upgraded my server environment for higher reliability and speed.
If you are interested in a dynamic IP blacklist for your routers are are
not already using my list then checkout my writeup:

http://joshaven.com/resources/tricks/mikrotik-automatically-
updated-address-list/

If you are already use my list than don't worry, your service just got
faster and you don't need to do anything... unless you want to include the
newly added list from malc0de.

Below is a shameless advertisement for a company that I’m pretty excited
about. I’d highly recommend checking out CloudFlare if you have a busy
site that you want to make quicker….

I am using CloudFlare as a web caching CDN and it is working very well!
The performance has been spectacular and the implementation has been
painless. Performance is kinda the point of a CDN however when it doesn’t
cost me a dime and works so well I am just amazed. So far this week it has
saved me 54.39GB of my sites total 124.74GB of bandwidth. Next week it
will save me even more as I have been tweaking things to get the most out
of CloudFlare…

Latency Reduction:
San Francisco69ms to 2ms
Dallas38ms to 0.5ms
Atlanta 46ms to 0.4ms
Mexico City 68ms to 26ms

Roam 124ms to 12.5ms
Tokyo 158ms to 88ms

Below are some screenshots of the analytics that show how CloudFlare is
kicking in and really handling a lot of traffic that my server was having
to handle before...

Re: [AFMUG] FREE Mikrotik Blacklist Service

2016-08-24 Thread Joshaven Mailing Lists
CloudFlare (by default) doesn’t cache html or php pages as they can contain
dynamic content and in my case they do. So my lists are being served out of
cache along with images, js & css and other static content but my html files
are still being served live from my server. I had to create a few custom cache
rules to cover the .rsc file extension but that was easy. CloudFlare has a
nifty feature called Railgun which makes the dynamic content work properly with
the CDN which has an associated cost… I don’t need it at this point, however,
so I haven’t become a paid customer yet.

I benefit in that the more my site is used the more my online reputation is

So your instinct to expect a selfish motive (sorry if that is putting words in

Re: [AFMUG] infrastructure PTR naming conventions

2016-08-24 Thread Josh Baird
For infrastructure:

vl[A]-[B][C].[D].net.domain.com

A = vlan-id
B = device type (irtr, artr, cr, etc)
C = device index (0, 1, 2, etc)
D = location id

Example:

vl7-artr1.dan100.net.domain.com

(vlan 7 interface of "artr1" at "dan100")

For customer/dymamic pools, we just do something simple like:

ip-1.2.3.4.cust.domain.com

I agree with Jesse. You want enough data to find things out without
excessive digging, but you don't need to document the world.
Place-Device-Interface is plenty for traceroutes, and dyn/static is
enough for pools.

I know it's forward notation, but I prefer to keep them simple.
Also valuable in some cases is setting a longer TTL value for your
non-dynamic-use PTR records (like 86400 or 43200). It avoids you
having to change them later when someone with a static IP gets
black listed on a DUL email server list.

Also, right or wrong, I use loose geographical naming conventions
(based on CLLI naming convention) for PTR records for L3
interfaces so traceroutes are more intuitive. So, one of our
towers is called SDPB and it's in Spearfish so I might use
"sprf-sdpb-ccr-eth1.celerityinternet.com
". If nothing
else, as the network grows, it's helpful internally.

I know this is alot like asking which mail server is best or which cable to
use. Im putting up a DNS server with our rfc1918 space thats in use on it.
Ive been reading a ton of conventions people use, some granular, some
vague.
anybody care to share some examples?

Wilson and SureCall both have wide band yagi and panels with 700 to 2700mhz
spread. Tessco has a good selection of DAS antennas as well. Which amp
did you get?

Re: [AFMUG] PPS DDOS

2016-08-24 Thread Josh Reynolds
I have seen the specs and have deployed both products.

One is a dual core 1GHz PPC proc, the other uses a 36 core TILE
processor at 1.2GHz. Not exactly apples to apples. The performance
show in the "Performance Test Results" not only doesn't equate to
"about 10 times more PPS" (depending on the test, sometimes up to ~17x
increase), but also doesn't consider the fact that it's an "All Ports"
test. With the CCRs dedicating a core (at least) per port, it's not an
identical comparison.

If you consider all 13 ports on an 1100AHx2 are shared between 2
cores, and just assume that the 12 ports on that model CCR are using
12 TILE cores (and no more), then you end up with a 2.84x increase in
per-core PPS performance BEST CASE (with FastPath). If you look at the
overall system best case (fastpath), of course you have a 17x increase
in kpps performance "as a system". Worst case however, you find a
5.35x increase in system performance.

A huge improvement, to be sure, but the TILE processor package can be
very deceiving depending on the context of the evaluation.

Just had a DDOS that was only 30mb/s but running over 110,000 pps It
took down a RB 1100, but a CCR 1036 upstream was still at 0% CPU (and a
trango licensed link didn't care either) Followed the typical Gamer
DDOS of lasting <10min. In the torch I captured, almost all the src
traffic was from an Asian telco /13 so I'm guessing it was sourced from
 a bunch of compromised modems.

I don't think I've seen one like this before with low Bandwidth but high

[AFMUG] cellular repeater antenna

2016-08-24 Thread Rory Conaway
Any suggestions on long-range, multi-band antennas? It's for a Wilson repeater
and the cable is 100' long or more.
