The ones linked in TJ's link is definitely not the field mechanical
splices.  It's the simple epoxy/polish ends.

We've used these with success...as long as the cable is the right size.

The ones we were shown were fully mechanical.  Similar to a camlock but much 
cheaper.

in them and it is already epoxied into the business end and polished.

Inside them is a v block and index matching gel.  You have to strip and cleave 
the fiber and then just slide it in and lock it in.
