[all-audio] mic hand grips?

2018-01-01 Thread goshawk on horseback
hello all,
does anyone know if there are any hand grips out there that just have a
standard mic stand thread?
I have looked at the rycote ones, but they always seem to be for specific mics,
and not either the rode nt4, or blue yeti pro, which are the 2 mics I mainly
use.

Re: [all-audio] using my iphone as a high quality recorder

2018-08-05 Thread goshawk on horseback
I personally like the ultimate vr or ultimate voice recorder as it is
otherwise known app. the quality is customisable, and recordings can be
automatically sent to dropbox or something like that.

as far as external mics go, there are a few to choose from. a lot of them
however, don't have any cable, but just connect directly to the lightning
port, which I think makes them very easy to get knocked and cause possible
damage to the lightning port.
the main ones are the zoom ones, which I believe there are at least 2,
possibly 3 models of, and which are nice ones, sure make one, but I haven't
tested this out yet, and rode also make one, but unless you are going to use
it with it's own app only, I found the pick up on it rather quiet and
disappointing.

alternatively, another really good device, is the line6 sonic port vx. this
is not only a stereo mic, but a good little audio interface as well. some of
the features of it's app are not very accessible, but a good one that is,
will let you hear the sound that you will get from it before using any other
app to actually record. it also has a headphone socket for monitoring, which
is great for any of the new iPhones which don't have there own.
it also has a cable, rather than being directly fixed to your lightning
port. finally, it has a mount for any standard mic stand.

finally, if you have a larger budget, and a preferred professional mic that
you prefer to use, you could get the apogee duet, which again, is an audio
interface, with xlr input connections.

hope some of this info helps.

Yep heaps of them and I'm sure other list members have some advice on this.
I'm not really much into IOS products these days but I do plan to get one of
the new iPad Pro machines towards the end of this year and when I do an
external microphone will be on the table.
I believe many of the standard USB microphones we know of such as the Blue
Yetti can be used and I know of others that plug into a headphone jack if
you own a microphone that has such a thing.
So do yourself a favour in the meantime, do a Google search and see what you
come up with, my bet is that you'll come up with enough devices to wet your
appetite.

Hi all

Something I have been wondering about for some time now. Is it possible to
use the iphone as a high quality audio recorder? Not with the internal
microphone of which which is of inferior sound quality but by connecting an
external microphone? Is there iny kind of app available which you can use
to for example to set the recording quality? I am not interested in video
at all.

That all said an iPhone still lacks the high bit and sampling rates that a
dedicated recorder or even an Android phone can offer.
Last I checked the iPhone could only record up to 48KHZ, enough for voice
perhaps.
Regarding the microphone of the iPhone not being of high quality? Well
friends I have to disagree with that statement somewhat, if you can turn off
all the processing on the iPhone behind the microphone then the internal
microphone of the iPhone indeed does a very fair job c considering what it
is.
Obviously external microphones can be of higher quality still.

you can use your iPhone as a high-quality recorder.
I would recommend the app called recorder HQ. In terms of microphones, I
would look at microphones like the scheur MV 88 and some of the road
microphones that have lightning connectors.

with all due respect, but saying that, "most do" is not really that helpful,
as there is still a fair chance of getting one that doesn't, as there is

Yeah as for interfaces, Zoom has the U44. If you like how the Zoom H5
and H6 sound with external mikes then you'd be good with this. Sure does
make a mike for the lightning port but it's not stereo. Or at least the
1 I've heard ain't.

[all-audio] accessible software for making video dvds?

2019-05-08 Thread goshawk on horseback
hello all,
does anyone know of any really accessible software for making standard video
dvds? in other words, ones that will play in a standard dvd player.
as I have some downloaded tv series in video format, that I would like to make
standard dvds out of, and some other video files that I would like to make a
dvd from.
ideally, the software should be able to work with a range of video file
formats, but I do have a video format converter program if this is not
possible.
I'm using win7 ultimate 64bit, and either window-eyes or nvda.

Yu might give Tapin Radio a try; I don't remember the exact link's URL, but
Tapin Radio will let you record and (provided you get the paid version) you
then can schedule recordings; the nice thing about this is, with Tapin
Radio, when you record, you can continue using your screen reader! Another
thing: you don't need to worry about going to the station's website; just
put the station in the search box and, if it's available, it'll show it!
Total Recorder is also a good piece of software for recording radio stations
as well! Hope this has been of help to you!

[all-audio] gain booster gadget?

2019-12-17 Thread goshawk on horseback
hello all,
does anyone know if there is a device for boosting the gain of a supposedly
line level source?
I have a particular device that is supposed to give line level output, but I
find that what it puts out of it's line out sockets is rather low level. I can
get decent level out of it, but only by opening the fader of the channel on the
desk that this particular device is on virtually full.
I know that many studio eq units also have gain controls, but really don't need
any eq, just some extra gain, so wondered if there was a device to just do that
job?
looking for a stereo, not single channel such box please.
hope that all makes sense.

Hi Simon,

Many mixers have alternative microphone and line or phono and line inputs
for some channels. What is usually the case is that you can use one or the
other, but not both together. So if you have a four channel mixer, you
probably can't use both the line input and phono input on the same
channel.

Therefore, what you want to do probably wouldn't work.

hello all,
does anyone know if there is any bit of kit out there which would let one
plug a line level source, in to a phono level channel?
I have a nice mixer, that has 4 channels which have both line and phono

something that would let me use line level sources on the phono inputs, it
would mean that I would have 8 sets of inputs available, rather than just
4,

hope that makes sense.

but on which I use mainly line level sources. so if I could get something that
would let me use line level sources on the phono inputs, it would mean that I
would have 8 sets of inputs available, rather than just 4, hope that makes
sense.

I would agree with the below.
as whilst yes there are tape machines with USB connections, from those I
have seen, the actual decks do tend to be of rather poor quality.

hi there if u want to transfer your tapes on to your pc
i would invest if u can in a good quality tape machine
that has controls for alining the play and record heads,
as different tapes r recorded with different head positions.
if your soundcard has a 3.5 jack socket,
then plug a mixer in to the line in socket,
and plug your tape machine in to one of your faiders,/line ins on the
mixer.

hope this helps.

personally, I like the aphex in2:
http://www.aphex.com/products/in2
as it has individual level controls on each channel, plus a rather
useful optical compressor, which comes in handy if you have to crank
things up a bit for some quieter parts of a recording, but don't want
to over do things on the louder parts.
as far as tape decks go, I personally use a marantz cp430, as it has
the biost adjustment, and is a 3head machine. plus as a portable
machine, it doesn't take up a lot of space when being used, and can
easily be stored away, when not in use.
when I had my full studio, I did used to have a really super teac deck,
which had just about any sort of adjustment one could think of, plus a
wired remote. it could also work at double the normal tape speed, for
making better quality recordings. but unfortunately I didn't keep a
record of it's model number.

[all-audio] decent optical switch?

2020-12-12 Thread goshawk on horseback
hello all,
does anyone know of a really decent 3 input or more optical/toslink switch?
the only ones I can find seem to be those from Lindy or Cyp, which both seem to
be the same, just with a different name on them. and whilst the specs on them
look decent, the actual build quality is very lightweight and plasticky, which
has caused me 2 issues, as follows:
1, because they are so light and have no real body to them, when using decent
but heavy optical cables, the weight of the cables tends to pull the switch off
of where ever it is placed.
and 2, so far, I have had at least 3 of these in the past, (the 4way version),
and with out acception, they have only lasted about 6 weeks max before they go
wrong, at a guess because I would say that again, the weight of the decent
cables is too much for the rubbish build of the sockets on the switch.

I've looked around and keep coming across the B1 Bluetooth Receiver...
Is that the right model? If so, can you please advise as to where you
bought yours? I'm only finding them in the US and China at the

references to RCA cables on one review, so I don't know whether that
one takes 3.5 mm leads), could you again please send a link to
whichever product you use?

not sure what to suggest if you want to make them on the go, but if you

just making them in one place, you could get a good quality bluetooth
receiver, (I personally like the audioengine one), and just hook that up

your existing recorder. I have used it very successfully to record bbc

clips from my iPhone to my pc for example, as it meant that I could just
go

through the show quickly with the bbc sounds app on my phone, and just
record the 2 clips I wanted, (which were the ones featuring myself), with
out having to otherwise download the whole show to my pc, and then edit
out

all the rest of it, which would have been a pest, as the whole show was
4hours long. (hope that all makes sense).

Hi there. I hope everyone's well.

For a long time I've recorded content from my iPhone 5S (not calls,
but notes read by VoiceOver, attachments from emails, etc.) using my
Olympus DM-670 and a 3.5 mm to 3.5 mm jack lead. Unfortunately, my
faithful smartphone has now given up the ghost, and trials with
headphone adapters attached to my iPhone SE 2020 and various
iPods/iPads have all featured a great deal of hissing behind the audio
output. I presume this is because newer models require more power to
run (seeing as they're effectively computers these days) and/or that
the lightning to 3.5 mm adaptor creates interference between the two
devices.

This leads me to assume that the only way to record material from my
iPhone SE 2020 or another modern model would be to connect such a
device to a digital recorder via bluetooth. I've come across plenty
of bluetooth recorders that are designed for phone call recording, but
does anyone know of a bluetooth digital recorder which is
simple/accessible for a totally blind user that can create
good-quality recordings (no background feedback, noise picked up from
elsewhere in the room where the devices are located, etc.)?

Many thanks in advance for any recommendations.

Cheers - Take care, Danny

I have an fm transmitter made in China the manufacturer's name I do not
know. This thing is great in terms of strong signal, in fact it is too
great in that I hear harmonics all over the fm dial. Of course, this is
partly due to poor harmonic rejection on the part of the radios on which I
listen. I can easily pick up its signal from a distance of approximately
350 feet. It uses a rubber duck and transmits from 75 to 108 megs.

John,

Just to be certain, I checked the frequency range on my C. Crane
transmitter manually. It appears that it goes from 88.3 to 107.7. It is
probably the same range that your old one uses. However, I did some
digging, and the higher power FM transmitter I had for a while is made by
Signstek. There are a couple on Amazon. However, the low power setting
on one of them is a half a watt. The one I bought was supposed to have a
low power of 100 MW, but I think it was probably a half a watt besides. I
had trouble running it close to anything. It came with a rubber duck
style antenna which seemed pretty well matched for it, but it is possible
that the trouble I had may have been remedied by a different antenna as
somebody suggested earlier. The Signstek transmitter I had did have an
connector for the antenna, but I do not think it was a BNC connecter. The
antenna had a ring around the connector that had to be screwed down onto
the transmitter's connector. It was similar to a 75-ohm cable connector
but it was bigger. It was smaller than a 50-ohm connector, though.

The Signstek does go down to 76mhz. in fact, one can set the frequency
range possibly even greater, although I would guess it becomes less
efficient at the extremes. As I said, I was very happy with the
performance of my Signstek but something happened to it after a year or
so. Yet, I know of another person using that transmitter and his has
lasted much longer and is still working.

In my younger days, I enjoyed experimenting with FM transmitters to see
what kind of range I could get out of them. I look back and am thankful
I didn't get caught. Nowadays, too much output makes me a little
nervous. Placing the Signstek on the floor of my basement with its
rubber duck connector still covered my block pretty well. I sometimes
like putting NLS books through my transmitter and I didn't like the idea
of my neighbors listening in. Therefore, I am happy with my C. Crane
transmitter with extra wire added to the antenna.

Regarding the power adjustment on the C. Crane transmitter, I opened up
the case to get to it. Opening the case is a little tricky because one
has to lift up and move horizontally as well to be sure one does not lift
up the cover with the knob of the volume control still extending through
the slot in the case. It is possible that one can remove a label of some
kind and avoid opening the case, but it isn't as obvious to me as it was
on the older transmitters. As I said, both of mine already were set for
maximum power.

I hope all of this is of some help.

Best regards,

Steve

Steve, I have a question regarding your newer C Crane transmitter. I
still have a C Crane transmitter which is perhaps ten years old and

that the lowest possible frequency was 88.3. I really would like the

Hey.

I have a Blue Snowball mic. Not sure how that differs from the yeti exactly,
but it is omnidirectional and basically picks up everything in my apartment
-- it would be perfect for a conference table I guess, ideally, but it's
also good for personal use. I waas a little skeptical at first, but I even
use it for podcasting and it works well enough. It's probably all told one
of the better non-studio-quality mics I've used honestly.

Re: [all-audio] how to test computer speakers

2021-11-11 Thread goshawk on horseback
there are quite a number of sound check cds on the market, for testing hi-fi
or studio setups, so it could be worth while investing in one of them, as
then you know what you are getting, rather than a youtube file which you
have no idea what messing about has been done with it before you get it.
(hope that makes sense)

Sure but what about your speakers do you want to test? you can find music
that has had the bass boosted even for really pushing your sub woofer. You
can find sine waves to hear different frequencies. So just go on youtube
and have a looksies. Just remember it's freeking YouTube. So meh not real
quality.

I am trying to get the program when ripping a cd to create the
structure observing the convention of creating artist folder, album
title folder into which to place the individual tracks.

Its default configuration is simply ripping the tracks into the
currently designated folder.

If anyone could provide the string of code needed to accomplish
this and tell me where to put it within the program I'd be very

I do hope this makes sense.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Re: [all-audio] FM Transmitters: Looking For One On The Order Of C-Crane But Has More Power

2021-12-09 Thread goshawk on horseback
I think a lot of that is often down to what sort of antenna you use with
them.
personally, I would say if you are going to use 500mw or more power, to get
longer range, get a transmitter that has a proper antenna connector, such as
BNC or PL259, so that you can connect a quality antenna to it, and more to
the point, so that you can place this antenna in a loft or somewhere well
away from other electronic gear. if possible, make sure the antenna you get
is properly tuned to the frequency you want to use your transmitter on, as
this will also cut down on the chances of having SWR issues.

hope this helps.

C-Crane But Has More Power

Tom,

I recently purchased two of the C. Crane transmitters. They both still had
the screw to adjust power although they are a little harder to get to.
However, in the case of both of my transmitters, they were set to the
maximum already. An older transmitter that I had purchased definitely
benefited by turning up the adjustment. It is possible they are being a
little less conservative now, with the power setting. Also, the newer C.
Crane transmitters reduced the digital noise that was present in the first
digital versions. I have been happy with my C. Crane transmitters although
I did clip a longer wire to the antenna.

I also bought another transmitter from Amazon that could transmit at 100 MW
or one watt. However, when I looked just now I did not find it.
Unfortunately, the low power setting seemed very much higher than 100 MW.
It was a good transmitter and very quiet, but it had enough output at the
low power setting that the signal would get into devices close by making
them misbehave. That transmitter had a capacitor or something that went out
after a year or so that generated a lot of noise in the audio. Also, some
of its settings are accessed through a sort of menu with which one has to be
careful. There are a number of transmitters on Amazon, but some claim a
power of .05W which would be pretty low. There are some that are a watt or
more, but besides being illegal, you may find that much power will disrupt
other devices as I did.

Good luck.

Best regards,

Steve Jacobson

Hello list: Does anyone know of an FM Transmitter that works on the order
of the ones that C-Crane sells; only thing: I need it to have a little more
power than what C-CCrane has right out of the box! It used to be that the
ones that C-Crane sold had a screw that you could turn, making it more
powerful! But then I hear that they fixed it so that this no longer could
be done! My old C-Crane unit (or so it would appear) has given up the
ghost; often, I'll want to listen to something from my computer, but want to
be in the kitchen or someplace away from the computer! Hopefully there is
something out there that'll do what I need it to do.but won't drain my bank
account too much!

Thanks for any info you can pass along!

Re: [all-audio] Recording via Bluetooth

2021-11-30 Thread goshawk on horseback
would you be looking to make such recordings on the go, or just at a fixed
location?
not sure what to suggest if you want to make them on the go, but if you are
just making them in one place, you could get a good quality bluetooth
receiver, (I personally like the audioengine one), and just hook that up to
your existing recorder. I have used it very successfully to record bbc radio
clips from my iPhone to my pc for example, as it meant that I could just go
through the show quickly with the bbc sounds app on my phone, and just
record the 2 clips I wanted, (which were the ones featuring myself), with
out having to otherwise download the whole show to my pc, and then edit out
all the rest of it, which would have been a pest, as the whole show was
4hours long. (hope that all makes sense).

Subject: [all-audio] Recording via Bluetooth

Re: [all-audio] audio input to USB?

personally, I would use a decent USB sound box for this, something like the
aphex IN2, or the latest version of the Steinberg UR22.
this will also give you actual hardware level controls, rather useful if you
will be transferring a number of different tapes.

Hi all! This is a simple question. I have a decent cassette machine, and
I need to send it's output into my computer through a USB port. Any
adapters as such for that, convert a high level audio signal into a
suitable audio signal for my sound card, or something like that?

Does anyone know what systems might be accessible to us, either via iPhone
