All of that works. Unmuting the channels also helped a bunch. ;-)
What doesn't work now is the CD audio playing through the soundcard.
I've got both the digital and the analog cables connected between the
CD dig/anlg outputs and the soundcard's dig/anlg inputs. The CD
channels are unmuted

I found the problem. Not only do I have to crank up the volume,
but I have to unmute all the channels (and there are lots) that I
care about. All is well now, and Mandrake Control Center *DID*
it's job to configure my card. Now if there was just some way to
turn on the speakers by default and
