Generally you need to use drivers, libs and utils from the same release.

Alsa 0.5.x, though labeled stable, is actually quite old and no longer
under active development. It is very possible that the feature you
desire has been implemented in the newer drivers. Please try to use
version 0.9.0beta12 of the drivers, library and utilities.

Is it possible that you have the C-Media supplied driver installed
concurrently with the alsa driver?

Is anyone else having trouble sending mail to the Linux Audio Users
List? mail.columbia.edu seems to be unavailble...or at least my ISPs
qmail-send program can't find it:

pages if you haven't already:
man modprobe
man insmod
man modules.conf
man depmod
hope this helps,

If you haven't already this might be better asked on the alsa-devel
list. Probably the first thing they will tell you there is that you
should be using the 0.9.0 version of alsa as 0.5.x is no longer under
development.

Hopefully Adam's suggestions will get you the rest of the way to where
you need to be.
I just wanted to commisserate with you on the Sytem.map issue. I've been
at this for about 2years now and that one probably took me about as long
to figure out as it took you.
