procs do not go away until I kill them. The procs hang ( I think until timeout
) and get an EOF in the log.

Hi,
the hanging processes are strange, no idea about that.
But I noticed you haven't defined "etimeout" (the time amanda waits for
estimate results in seconds) in your amanda.conf. IIRC it defaults to
something around 10 min. and that might be too short for the client.

I assume you are using the packages amanda-server and amanda-client from
Ubuntu's repository. I remember there were several issues

I also tried this on an 18.04 client wit 3.5.1 amanda client and I get the same
result defunct process and no backup. I am at a loss as what could be causing
this I have spent many hours debugging. Any thoughts ?
