The Droid, and HTC's main line being G1 MyTouch and Hero are all
popular handsets that work fine as dev phones. It doesn't seem like
the other Android handsets are seeing much usage right now, based on
the analytics I've seen.
But I would choose carefully in picking which phones to develop on,

The fix that worked for me:
In addition to the APN below, which didn't seem to work, I created a new
APN by ONLY setting the following values:
name: att
apn: wap.cingular
password: CINGULAR1
I was actually quite surprised that this worked, but it did, and it allowed
me to get past the initial
